Morning Sickness Natural Remedies

Morning sickness refers to a nauseated feeling that affects many women in the early stages of their pregnancy, which may be accompanied by vomiting. While there are a number of pharmaceutical treatments for morning sickness, natural remedies can be used to avoid potential side effects that may come with using drugs.


Herbs


A number of herbs are commonly used as remedies for the symptoms of morning sickness. Chamomile and fennel are also common herbal remedies for morning sickness.


Aromatherapy

To ease the churning of a nauseous stomach, dab two or three drops of peppermint or lemon essential oils onto a cotton ball and hold this under your nose until your stomach settles. These oils also help neutralize nauseous odors.


Fluids


Drinking lots of water, juice, herbal tea or other fluids throughout the day to keep your body hydrated helps with morning sickness. Preferably, you should drink at least 10 glass of liquid a day. This is important because dehydration tends to trigger the nausea associated with morning sickness. Fruit juice not only hydrates the body but also helps regulate your electrolyte balance. Select noncaffeinated teas such as ginger or peppermint tea over coffee, soda and other beverages that contain caffeine.








Rest


Women who are dealing with morning sickness need to get sufficient rest by taking naps during the day and getting adequate sleep at night. Fatigue tends to aggravate the nausea and vomiting associated with morning sickness. Lying down with a pillow elevating your head and another elevating your legs is recommended.


Eating Habits








Eating simple, bland foods and avoid cooking or eating spicy foods, which tend to trigger the nausea or vomiting associated with morning sickness, may help. Adding complex carbohydrates to your diet, such as bread, pasta and potatoes, can also relieve the symptoms. Complex carbs are not only easier to digest, but they are also soothing to the digestive system. Eating a small meal every few hours rather than three large meals, so that your stomach will not feel full, is also recommended.


Crackers


Crackers can be a pregnant woman's best friend in preventing or relieving morning sickness. Nibble on crackers 10 to 15 minutes before you get up in the morning, especially if this is the time of the day when you most often suffer the nausea or vomiting. Continue snacking on them throughout the day to keep morning sickness at bay. Rusks or toasted bread have a similar beneficial effect.

1. Stretch the joints and muscles in your body that are causing you the most pain. This will prepare the muscles to be worked by allowing oxygenated blood to flow in. 3. Press into the trigger point with a massage tool. These are widely available at department and drug stores and come in all different types. You should pick one that is more angular than round, as you'll want to be able to apply as much directed pressure to the trigger point as you can.


4. Practice shiatsu and other techniques on the trigger point. Shiatsu massage generally involves hard strokes performed with a thumb. You should apply and release pressure on the trigger point slowly, but you will have to use heavy pressure. Not only will light pressure be ineffective as spasms are persistent, but it may cause your muscles to contract as a defense mechanism.








5. Repeat your stretches after you apply repeated pressure to all of your trigger points to get lactic acid flowing from your muscles. Perform this procedure as often as you can and take note how well it is working.

4. Find Places to Buy Seaweed: Many regular grocery stores will have the nori type of seaweed since it's the most popular type. This can be found in the grocery store aisles named, "Ethnic Food" or "Asian Food". Health food stores, such as Whole Foods and Wild Oats will carry seaweed also, usually offering several varieties. Seaweed can purchased on the Internet, through many online health sources.

5. Eat nori. This seaweed is more commonly seen in sheet form used when making sushi. Usually, bits of sushi (raw fish), pickled ginger and rice is placed on the sheet and rolled up, similar to making a burrito, for example. It is then sliced horizontally into round pieces which can be dipped into soy sauce or eaten alone. Other foods can also be rolled up in nori sheets--use your imagination. Besides the sheets, nori can also be purchased in shakers so small flakes can be shaken onto food as a seasoning, such as, salads, hot vegetables, sea food, rice, soups and sauces.


6. Consume spirulina. In powder form, spirulina can easily be added when making smoothies (if you don't mind the green color) and in soups and sauces. I prefer 500 mg tablets in the Earthrise brand. Six tablets per day are recommended and I choose to disperse them throughout the day, usually after my meals. For example, I would take two tablets after each of my three main meals.


7. Eat dulse. Although low in sodium, dulse has a natural salty taste and is high in flavor, making more it an excellent seasoning for vegetables, meats, sauces and soups. In shaker form it is delicious in popcorn, in place of salt. Kelp can be found in powder form, making it easy to sprinkle on food such as soups, sauces, salads, vegetables or one can take it in tablet form.

Detox Diets For Teens

Detox diets are a popular alternative measure for purportedly attaining increased energy and better health. If you have recently undergone a detox diet, or know someone who has, you might be tempted to suggest a similar course of action for your teenager. However, before you do, understand that disturbing the normal teenage growth process with a restrictive "detox" fast might do more harm than good. If you want a real detoxifying diet that will not compromise the health of your loved one, you came to the right place.


Detox and Teens


The majority of detox diets on the market are restrictive affairs that in no way provide one's body with adequate nutrition to fuel ordinary biological processes. For teens (and adults for that matter), we recommend following the "7 Habits" of Dr. John Berardi. Dr. Berardi works with clients ranging from professional athletes to everyday "Joes," and the one thing that their diets all have in common is these seven basic habits. Teaching your child to stick to these rules will do far more for their health than any detox ever could.


1. Consume small meals every 2 to 3 hours, for a total of 5 to 8 meals a day.


2. Consume lean protein with each meal--chicken, fish, eggs or meat.








3. Consume fruits and vegetables with each meal.


4. Consume carbs only from fruits and vegetables.


5. Consume at least 25% of daily calories from fats--including animal fats, natural fats (like those found in coconuts and avocados), and oils like fish, flax and olive.


6. Drink only zero-calorie beverages--limit this to just water where possible.


7. No liquid nutrition--all meals should be solid, natural food.


Of course, teaching your child new eating habits is often difficult. We recommend leading by example. Follow these rules yourself and eliminate all foods in the home that do not comply with these habits. Where poor choices are eliminated, healthy choices follow naturally. Prevent Workplace Bloodborne Pathogens

While workers in health care and emergency response are particularly at risk, there are numerous occupations that carry the possibility of coming in contact with blood-borne pathogens, such as HIV, and hepatitis B and C. Exposure to these viruses in the workplace can occur in several ways: being pricked by a contaminated needle or instrument, infected blood spread through open wounds, or by bodily fluids being splashed in the eyes, nose, or mouth. There are steps employers and workers can take to limit or prevent exposure to blood and body fluids.


Instructions


Create a Plan


1. Identify which safety hazards confront the workers and what can be done to remove, isolate or eliminate those threats, according to a guidebook published by Health and Safety Executive.


2. Develop a strategy that determines how the company will treat any and all workers who come in contact with contaminated blood.


3. Train all employees on the ways in which they may be exposed to blood-borne pathogens, what protective equipment to wear, dispose of that equipment as well as any other possibly contaminated items, what immediate actions should be taken in case of exposure, and properly identify biohazard containers.


Minimize and Prevent Exposure


4. Provide easy access to sanitary gloves in the workplace. Make sure that workers wear them whenever the risk of exposure to blood or other body fluid is present. Depending on the workplace and degree of exposure, it may be necessary to also provide masks, gowns, and eye protection.


5. Clean any spilled blood with a fresh mixture of one part bleach diluted in ten parts water. First soak the blood up by covering the spill with paper towels, then pour the bleach solution over the towels. While wearing gloves, pick up the towels and clean with disinfectant.


6. Prohibit drinking, eating, smoking, applying chapstick, and handling contact lenses in all areas where workers may be potentially exposed to blood and blood-borne viruses.


7. Provide equipment with safety features, such as safety-tipped scissors and self-sheathing needles.








8. Require that all workers observe basic hygiene procedures and that they wash their hands with soap and water for at least ten to fifteen seconds after being exposed to blood or other body fluids.

Carboplatin Cancer Treatment

Carboplatin is a chemotherapy drug used to treat a wide spectrum of cancers. While it has certain risks and side effects, like all medications, it offers fewer toxic effects than earlier drugs and is prescribed because the benefits outweigh the risks.


Function


Carboplatin stops the growth and reproduction of cancer cells. It is a second-generation platinum-containing compound offering less toxicity than its parent drug cisplatin. Carboplatin is used to treat many cancers, including ovarian, lung, testicular, head and neck, and bladder cancers, as well as Wilms' tumor, brain tumors and retinoblastomas.


Administration


Carboplatin is given intravenously over the course of 15 to 60 minutes, although it can be delivered over a 24-hour period. Carboplatin can also be infused into the peritoneal cavity.








Side Effects


Common carboplatin side effects can include lowered blood cell counts, brittle hair, diarrhea, constipation, nausea or stomach pain. Tell your doctor if you have fatigue lasting for more than a few hours or severe mouth blistering. If you have side or back pain, red urine, tarry stools, shortness of breath, dizziness or faintness, fever or chills, or shortness of breath, contact your doctor right away.


Precautions


Before starting carboplatin, make sure your doctor knows about any food or medication allergies, pre-existing medical conditions or infections you have. Tell your doctor about any medications or supplements you are taking, or if you have taken carboplatin or cisplatin before.


Reproductive Health Caution


Ask your doctor about possible risks of sterility with this drug. If you are trying to get pregnant or are pregnant, consult your doctor. Carboplatin use by either partner during conception or pregnancy could cause birth defects. It is unknown if carboplatin passes into breast milk.


Warning


Carboplatin can affect your bone marrow production, blood count or organs, so your doctor may perform tests to monitor your health while you are on this medication and after you finish it. Carboplatin may also cause nerve damage. If you notice numbness, tingling or weakness in your hands or feet, notify your doctor immediately.

Facts About Growing Crystals


A crystal forms from substances that have a particular recurring arrangement of ions, atoms or molecules. Crystals are easily recognized by the color and shape. These materials include sugar, salt, quartz and even diamonds. With the right environment and materials, people can grow their own crystals.


Materials


You'll need a concentrated solution to grow a crystal. This solution can be made from any of a number of household items. There are recipes for growing crystals from Borax, alum, Epsom salt and vinegar. The concentrated solution should be poured onto a slightly rough surface to facilitate growth. Flat surfaces can still grow crystals, but the process may take longer to achieve significant results because crystals are less likely to adhere to smoother surfaces.


Variables


Many variables can affect crystal growth. To get the best crystals, the environment in which the crystals are growing should be a location where vibrations will not constantly be present. For some crystals, temperature can speed or slow the process of growing. Experiment with temperature to find the best conditions for your type of crystal.








The easiest way to begin a large crystal formation is to start with a seed crystal. The seed crystal can be formed on a string suspended in a cup or jar of the solution, then placed into a larger container with the saturated solution.








Time Frame


The time it takes for crystals to grow varies from two seconds up to week, and will vary depending on the type of materials that you use. Many materials such as salt, borax and Epsom salt will only need a few hours before crystals begin to grow. These seed crystals can then be used to grow larger crystal formations as concentrated solution is added to the seed crystal. Each additional layer of crystals will take the same amount of time to form as did the seed crystal.


Warning


Some substances used to make crystals can be dangerous to handle. Also, the process of making the crystals can pose a risk. Rock candy can be made from sugar crystals, but the sugar must be boiled, and this process is not recommended for children without adult supervision.


Other crystals can be made from high-end chemicals but should only be used by someone with experience in handling the materials. Crystals can be grown from chemicals such as silver nitrate, sodium thiosulfate and copper sulfate.


Handling


Some crystals can be handled after growth without the risk of further crystal growth on top of the surface or a deterioration of the materials. To store crystals properly, take the crystal out of the solution, and dry the surface with soft cloth or tissue. This will prevent further crystals growing on the surface. The optimal place to store crystals is in a dry area, such as a tightly sealed jar, where moisture cannot come into contact with the crystal.

Sun Cure Cigar Tobacco

Some cigars are made with sun-cured tobacco.








A process called curing is the final step in the production process of tobacco. Tobacco starts out as a flowering plant and eventually develops broad leaves used to create cigarettes, chewing tobacco, snuff and cigars. Curing reduces moisture content in the tobacco leaf from 80 percent to about 20 percent, according to the International Tobacco Growers Association. This increases the durability of the tobacco. Sun curing is one of four curing methods used for curing tobacco intended for commercial use.


Instructions


1. Harvest ripe tobacco from the soil by hand or using suitable tools or machinery. Exact harvesting methods are determined by the type of tobacco. Some leaves are harvested individually as they ripen, creating a labor-intensive process. Other tobacco leaves are harvested in a bunch by cutting the entire stalk.


2. Select leaves to be sun cured, while reserving others for other curing methods such as fire curing, air curing and flue curing. The separate curing processes help produce different flavors in the tobacco and make them more suitable for different products such as cigars or snuff.


3. Hang the tobacco leaves outside with direct access to the sun. Use a kitchen knife to cut a hole into the stalk of the tobacco leaves. Then draw kite string or twine through the stalks to join the leaves. Suspend the leaves anywhere outside with exposure to the sun -- from a tree limb, clothesline, porch banister or something else. Take one end of the string or twine in each hand with and draw them around the tree limb, clothesline or porch banister. Tie both ends into a knot to allow the leaves to hang freely. Allow the leaves to hang for about 30 days or until the leaves are a deep dark brown. Then remove the leaves to use in tobacco products.

Varicose Vein Treatment

Varicose veins are enlarged veins that usually appear close to the skin and are blue or purple, but they can also be flesh colored. Chinese Herbs For Cancer

Herbs are an an important part of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and have been used for thousands of years to treat numerous conditions, including cancer. Many of these ancient remedies have become popular with the modern public as alternative cancer treatments. Scientists have studied some of these herbal medicines for their effects on cancer cells and growths and have published numerous studies with some very encouraging results.


History


The use of herbs in TCM to fight cancer goes back to at least 200 B.C., as tumors depicted on turtle shell oracles along with their causes have been found from this time. Cancer was considered to be caused by a variety of different imbalances in the human body and a large number of herbs have been traditionally deployed to fight it. Some of the herbs used in TCM to combat cancer have shown strong effects in laboratory studies and are now considered the top natural therapies for cancer.


Reishi


The reishi mushroom is considered one of the most important longevity and disease-fighting herbs in TCM, and is now being studied intensively for its effects on cancer. An article published in Integrative Cancer Therapies in 2003 states that reishi mushroom clearly demonstrates anticancer activity on cancer cells and has been found to suppress cell adhesion and cell migration in highly invasive breast and prostate cancer cells.


Ginseng








Ginseng is another highly prized herb in TCM that has a strong following in the west as an immune-boosting and energy-enhancing herb, although it has been traditionally used to fight cancer, as well. A study published in the February-March 2003 edition of the journal Mutation Research/Fundamental and Molecular Mechanisms of Mutagenesis found that ginseng extract shows cancer-prevention properties against a large number of different cancers including throat, lung, stomach and liver cancers.


Astragalus


Astragalus is a commonly used herb in TCM formulas that are designed to boost the immune system and is specific in cancer remedies. In a study published in Oncol-Rep. 2003 Sept-Oct; 10(5): 1507-12, Chinese researchers found that an astragalus extract was able to reduce a cytokine (immune signally molecules) thought to be responsible for tumor progression to normal levels and thereby may be able to reverse cancerous growth.

A Huber needle is designed with directional, beveled tip that allows doctors to determine the direction of a catheter which is fed through the needle and exits the needle's tip.








A Huber needle has a curved end and is known as noncoring needle. Huber needles have a hole in the side instead of the tip and have a special point that slices tissue rather than puncturing it, reducing wound leakage. A catheter is fed into the body via the Huber needle.


Use


A Huber needle is used as a means to introduce a catheter directly into the body of an ill patient in order to deliver antibiotics, chemotherapy and nutritional supplements. The Huber needle helps to safely install a port, also known as a central line in the body so the patient, most often seriously or terminally ill individuals, can avoid having to endure numerous needle sticks. These ports may be left inside the patient for several days, making the administration of medicines and nutrition easy and safe.


Safety


Huber needles have a reputation for accidental needle sticks to medical personnel removing them. This happens most often because the nurse or doctor must stabilize the intravenous port with one hand while removing the needle with the other. This risk was most dangerous when working with patients who were diagnosed with infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS or other blood-borne maladies. Due to the nature of the design of the noncoring needle, needle sticks occurred to the stabilizing hand. Modern Huber needles are fitted with plastic safety locks that protect medical personnel from accidental punctures.

There are several types of Huber safety needles such as the Huber Plus which has plastic wings which may be pinched together to stabilize the port for removal. Other types are fitted with a safety arm or needle trap that helps prevent accidental needle sticks. There are some some brands that are now latex-free for patients and personnel with latex sensitivity.

The Celts were an ancient population of cultures whose clans spanned much of Europe from the Iron Age until Medieval times. Though Celtic tribes formed the basis of Germanic culture, their main influence now connotes the people of Britain, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Varieties of Narcissus, including daffodils are native to the woodlands of the Celts. As such, they figured prominently in the folk medicine and mystical traditions of Celtic cultures.


History

The ancient Celts were non-literate; oral histories, Roman reports, and archaeological records surmise what is known. Much of original Celtic culture was lost when Rome invaded these lands, and later as Anglo-Saxon forces brought Christianity and government to the places which had been ruled by local clans. It is difficult to know exactly which plants may have been used to treat ailments in ancient times, but later historical records indicate Celtic peoples enjoyed relatively good health and were treated with botanical folk remedies made from native plants, such as the daffodil.

Records for Celtic folk medicine appear by the 1600s. The Young People's Trust for the Environment cites, "In the 17th century daffodil bulbs were used as a medicine for various ailments. Ground-up bulb mixed with barley meal was used to aid the healing of wounds." These remedies were likely topical, as ingesting the bulbs is toxic.


According to Danielle Ragole of Radford University, daffodil compounds may have been used as anti-cancer medicines as well in Europe during the Middle Ages.

Folk medicine compounds, including daffodil bulbs may be toxic.


Daffodil bulbs are toxic and will induce nausea and vomiting soon after ingestion due to the chemical lycorine. Flowers, leaves and stems may produce contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals. Wear gloves when handling the bulbs, and be sure to keep pets away from them as well. Daffodil bulbs are no longer considered a suitable home remedy.

A pendulum is a weight on the end of a string or other arm that is able to swing freely when force is applied. Galileo is often credited with having discovered the principles of the pendulum when he observed the swinging chandeliers in Pisa cathedral. The story may be no more than a myth but the great scientist certainly contributed to the world's knowledge and understanding of pendulums. Nowadays, pendulums have many real-world uses in science and other fields.


Clocks


Grandfather clocks, grandmother clocks and other long-case clocks have pendulums to regulate the movement of the escape wheel. The long case is needed to house the pendulum. As clockmaker Harold C. Kelly points out, the clock's escapement, the device that converts continuous rotational motion into back-and-forth motion, in turn maintains the swinging of the pendulum. Invented by Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens in 1656, the pendulum clock continues to be popular in the era of digital timekeeping.


Crystal Energy Therapy








Crystal Tiger's Karen Ryan uses a pendulum for crystal energy therapy, a form of treatment some people believe is effective in helping cure relatively harmless conditions such as colds or flus, to long-term acute conditions such as asthma and arthritis. Ryan also suggests that pendulums can be used to answer "yes" or "no" questions, such as "should I stay in my current job?" Swinging the pendulum and noting precisely how it moves is at the core of the technique.

Pendulums are also used in other scientific instruments. The pendulum is used in religious practices, in the form of a swinging incense burner. In music, the principle of the pendulum is used in the metronome, a device used to ensure musicians keep proper time.

Make Pins & Needles Go Away

"Pins and needles," or temporary Ppresthesia, is the numbness you feel in any part of your body that has had the blood circulation cut off. A prickly sensation in the affected limb makes you feel as if you are getting stuck with pins and needles--hence the common name of this condition. On the blood supply returning, the pricking feeling gradually diminishes and the affected limb feels normal once again. Standing, sitting or lying down in one position for too long may bring about pins and needles, as will too much typing or holding the phone handset too long.








Instructions


1. Allow the pressure to be relieved from the affected limb. If you have been lying on your arm or leg and it has pins and needles, roll over onto your other side to allow the blood to circulate in the affected arm or leg.


2. Shake the affected limb until the feeling comes back. If it is your arm, shake it down by your side to allow gravity to help the circulation. Avoid raising your arm above your head and shaking it as the blood has to travel "uphill."


3. Note that menopause often makes the skin tingle and produces a prickly sensation. This condition is normal and nothing to be concerned about. The normal passage of time eases these strange feelings.


4. Reposition the affected limb. When this is done the feeling should return within a few minutes. Prolonged tingling feelings and pins and needles may be a sign of a more serious condition such as a heart problem or a pinched nerve--and this warrants a trip to your doctor.


5. Allow a few minutes to elapse for the limb to return to normal. If the limb remains numb it is quite feasible that something more serious is affecting the limb. Make an appointment with your family physician who will evaluate your symptoms and provide a proper diagnosis.
