Chinese Remedies For Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis, or eczema, is a skin condition that usually affects the scalp and face. Many people report relief in their symptoms as a result of traditional Chinese herbal medicine, but the FDA does not regulate Chinese herbs, so both potency and purity can vary. Chinese medicine should be used as a complementary treatment to conventional medicine, not a replacement; if you are considering trying this form of alternative medicine, consult your physician first.

Features of Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis sometimes affects infants, and is referred to as "cradle cap." Although seborrheic dermatitis usually affects the head, it is sometimes seen on other parts of the body where hair is present. Symptoms include dry, yellow or scaly patches of skin, with surrounding areas often appearing reddened. Causes for dermatitis are not always easy to determine; heredity, diet, food allergies, chemical allergies and exposure to irritants can all play a role. Among the most common allergens are pollen, nickel (found in earrings, rings and zippers), latex, pet dander, fish, peanut, wheat, eggs and milk. Common irritants include dust, sand, detergents and soaps and chemicals such as chlorine.

Traditional Chinese medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine is an alternative healing practice that often includes the use of herbs. Chinese medicine's approach to dermatitis focuses on correcting imbalances in the body, rather than just the skin, with the belief that skin improvement will follow. The three main components of Chinese medicine are elimination and detox, building health and maintaining health.

Chinese Herbs

You are probably already familiar with one herb that plays an important role in Chinese herbal therapy---the tea leaf. To treat your dermatitis, your practitioner may advise you to drink oolong tea, a specialty tea produced by partial oxidation of the tea leaf and prized for its anti-allergic and anti-oxidant effects. He may also prescribe rhizoma coptidis, the root of the coptis plant, for its anti-inflammatory qualities, and radix scutellariae, or skullcap root, believed to assist in the healing of sores. Other remedies he may recommend are flos lonicerae---or honeysuckle flower---for its detoxifying effect, fructus kochiae---or broom cypress fruit---to relieve itching, and cortex phellodendri---bark of the phellodendron tree---for its drying effect. He may also advise fructus forsythiae, or forsythia fruit, for its anti-infective qualities.

Precautions

There have been reports of liver and kidney failure in some patients on Chinese herbal regimens; if you do decide to try Chinese herbal therapy, make sure you are working with a qualified practitioner, and that you are regularly screened for toxicity. You should consult with your doctor before embarking on any herbal regimen, as these substances can interfere with prescription medicines. To learn about the side effects of herbs, visit the US Library of Medicine in the resource below.

Longterm Side Effects Of Pot Smoking

Marijuana is a drug that remains illegal in the United States, but is still widely available and regularly used. Marijuana is a drug that is made by shredding the dry leaves, flowers and stems of a marijuana plant. It is usually brown, green or gray in color. The main active chemical in marijuana is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). However, it also contains over 400 other chemicals.

Respiratory Damage

Regular marijuana smoking can damage bronchial passage cells which makes you more susceptible to getting pulmonary infections. Marijuana can contribute to chronic bronchitis, lung inflammation and possibly lung cancer. However, the link between marijuana and lung cancer has not yet been proven irrefutably.

Weakened Immune System

Marijuana has been shown to be an immuno-suppressant in some research studies. It can weaken immune mechanisms.

Brain Injury

Long-time marijuana users may develop brain abnormalities (see Resources below). Specifically, marijuana use may shrink the hippocampus, which regulates emotion and memory.

Mental Health Effects

Smoking marijuana may trigger panic attacks, delusions, paranoia and other mental illnesses.

Memory and Learning Problems

Marijuana use may impair memory for up to six weeks after having smoked or consumed the marijuana. This can inhibit learning.

Addictive Problems

Individuals who smoke marijuana on a regular basis may experience withdrawal symptoms when the drug is not available.

Get Rid Of Cold Sores Forever

It starts with a little tingle under the skin that itches and irritates you as the tiny bump begins to emerge. Whether brought on by fever, sickness or weather, getting rid of cold sores can be a chore. You can reduce the appearance of cold sores and prevent them from spreading. Unfortunately, because cold sores are a viral infection, you can't get rid of them forever, but you can take precautions against them that will greatly reduce the number of cold sores you get.

Instructions

1. Boost your immune system with a daily multivitamin. Cold sores are often the result of oncoming illness, so keeping your immune system strong will help keep cold sores at bay. Vitamins with zinc, magnesium and calcium create an alkaline environment in your bloodstream that keep cold sores under control.

2. Pay attention to symptoms that a cold sore is coming on and begin treatment before it reaches the surface of your skin. Apply prescription strength or over-the-counter cold sore ointment the minute you feel the symptoms, and continue to apply it as directed by your doctor. Hitting the area before the cold sore appears will nip a cold sore in the bud before it ever even crops up.

3. Begin a daily treatment regimen of a product like Herpaflor or Zenmed, which are designed to not only battle inflammation and soothe discomfort, but will also prevent future breakouts.

4. Monitor the triggers that cause you to experience an outbreak. Illness, stress, anxiety, menstruation and extreme weather conditions are just a few likely triggers. Battle these triggers before an outbreak occurs. Reduce stress and anxiety through meditation and deep breathing. If PMS and menstruation tend to be difficult, you may want to talk to your doctor about methods you can take to cut down on the amount of stress experienced during that time of the month.

5. Avoid foods high in acid and salt. Acidic, salty foods can often bring on cold sore outbreaks, so eliminating them from your diet will also eliminate the number of outbreaks you experience.

What Are The Benefits Of Tai Chi For Seniors

Tai Chi is a growing trend in the American medical world. Research has proven the multitude of benefits that arise from people who practice Tai Chi. Seniors in particular gain many benefits to their overall physical and mental health.

Low-Impact Exercise

Tai Chi is ideal for seniors because of its low-impact routines. In many cases, normal fitness exercises are too much for seniors. Because of the slow, gentle movements of Tai Chi, it ideally provides similar benefits without overdoing the physical stress.

Low Cost

Sessions of Tai Chi are provided in several medical facilities, including hospitals. Because Tai Chi is offered to groups, it costs less for each person.

Social Interaction

Research shows social activities lower risks for disease. With Tai Chi being a social form of exercise, it provides seniors with that interaction.

Balance/Flexibility

Balance and breathing--two of the many tasks made difficult with age--are major focuses in Tai Chi. Daily practice strengthens these qualities for seniors.

Physical Functioning

Tai Chi combines graceful exercises in balance, flexibility, aerobic and toning. The movements provide exercise but also improve a senior's ability to function with daily tasks such as sitting and standing.

Fun

Tai Chi doesn't stop at physical health benefits. It's a fun activity for seniors that can decrease boredom and depression.

Effectiveness Of Spermacide Condoms

Proper use of a condom can greatly reduce the risks posed by sexual contact.

Condoms let sexual partners have an enjoyable experience while still remaining safe and healthy. However, condoms, like all contraceptives, can fail due to improper use or defects. Spermicidal condoms, which are condoms coated in spermicidal lubricant, are meant to combat that risk by providing an additional layer of protection against condom failure.

Purpose

The purpose of the condom is to help prevent an unwanted pregnancy, as well as to help prevent the spread of a sexually transmitted disease (STD) or sexually transmitted infection (STI). Both male and female condoms present a physical barrier, typically made of latex, that prevents sperm, or other bodily fluids, from reaching and fertilizing an egg. A spermicidal condom is coated in a lubricant made from a spermicidal chemical such as nonoxynol-9, or N-9, which traps and kills any sperm that comes into contact with it. This additional layer of protection is designed to work as a backup in case sperm somehow bypass the barrier presented by the condom, such as through a tear or spill.

Effectiveness

When used on its own to prevent unwanted pregnancy, a condom's effectiveness is around 99 percent, according to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. In addition, it is estimated by the World Health Organization to be 80 percent effective in preventing STDs and STIs. A condom's effectiveness is highly dependent on correct usage, however; when human error is taken into account, the effectiveness against pregnancy drops to approximately 70 percent. The use of a spermicidal condom doesn't appear to add any additional protection against pregnancy. The University of Wisconsin-Steven Point points out that the amount of spermicide used on spermicidal condoms is minimal and concludes that it is not enough to be effective if the condom fails through a tear or spill.

Increasing Effectiveness

Rather than relying on spermicidal condoms, combining proper condom use with a separate contraceptive will increase protection against unwanted pregnancy. This can be done with a secondary method of pregnancy prevention such as a separately applied spermicide or a birth control pill. While no single method of contraceptive is 100 effective, even when combined together, using two or more methods can work as a reliable backup in case one should fail.

Warnings

Using a spermicidal condom hasn't been proven to protect against condom failure. To avoid failure, never use two condoms of any type at the same time. Even using one male and one female condom at the same time will cause friction between the two and greatly increase the risk of tearing. In addition, never use a condom stored improperly or past its expiration date. Certain substances can weaken a condom, such as oil-based lubricants, thereby increasing the risk of tearing. Read the warnings on all products for any potential complications and always follow the instructions to reduce the risk of an unwanted pregnancy or exposure to an STD or STI.

Tiredness Treatments

Tiredness Treatments

Someone who feels tired for weeks, or months on end may be experiencing chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). According to the Centers for Disease Control, anywhere from one to four million Americans suffer from this condition every year. Severe cases of CFS can even affect a person's ability to carry out everyday tasks. Treatment approaches for this CFS include medications, therapy, and routine exercise.

Identification

Feelings of tiredness that persist over long periods of time are typically a symptom of some underlying condition. Psychological disorders, blood sugar disorders, immune system imbalances, and chronic viral infections can all result in symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome. Some of the symptoms experienced include tiredness, sleep disturbances, muscle and joint pain, headaches, and difficulty concentrating. Symptoms can vary from person to person, and may cause minimal or severe impairment in a person's daily functioning level.

Exercise and Diet

Diets lacking in essential vitamins and minerals like iron, and magnesium can lead to chemical imbalances in the body. Chemical imbalances affect how efficiently the body is able to process available nutrients, and how well these processes are carried out. As a result, feelings of tiredness can result from poor nutritional practices. A diet that includes a balance of all the major food groups contains the nutrients needed for healthy body function. The effects of regular exercise work to improve circulation and maintain efficient metabolism processes. Improved circulation promotes healthy cellular functions and helps the body to eliminate unneeded wastes and toxins.

Medication Treatments

Medication treatments used for CFS address the underlying physical conditions that may cause feelings of tiredness. Blood disorders like anemia, thyroid disorders and chronic viral infections can all result in CFS. Iron supplements, antibiotics and medications which address thyroid imbalances are some of the treatment types available. Fatigue, muscle/joint pain and problems sleeping are also common symptoms of depression. Antidepressant or anti-anxiety medications may help with relieving the emotional and physical symptoms that accompany depression disorders.

Psychotherapy

Feelings of tiredness caused by stress can also turn into a depression disorder. Under these conditions, individuals may benefit from combining medication and psychotherapy treatments. Cognitive behavior therapy is a method used to address negative thinking patterns associated with the emotional and physical symptoms that accompany depression. By replacing negative thought processes with effective coping strategies, individuals learn better cope with everyday stressors. In some cases, combining psychotherapy with a regular exercise routine further helps to alleviate CFS symptoms.

Nutritional Supplements

Most hormones in the body are made from cholesterol and protein materials. In order for the body to be able to manufacture hormones, a specific balance of minerals must be present. Nutritional supplements are designed to make up for nutrients that may be lacking in a person's daily diet. Supplements which may help with reducing feelings of tiredness include magnesium, l-tryptophan, and ginko biloba, dong quai, and Echinacea. It's always a good idea to consult with a doctor before starting a supplement regime, especially if a person is taking prescription medications.

Alliance For Employee Benefit Cooperatives

The AEBC supports cooperative benefit plans for small businesses.

The Alliance for Employee Benefit Cooperatives (AEBC) is an organization dedicated to complementing health care reforms by creating employee benefit cooperatives. The cooperatives, made up of small business members, allow small business the economies of scale of larger businesses

Significance

Employee benefit cooperatives are organizations designed to help small businesses give their employees the same benefits as large corporations through collaboration. Many small businesses lack the expertise in federally-sanctioned programs. The cooperative provides expertise to small businesses and, by combining the buying power of several businesses, achieves economies of scale for the benefit of members. The AEBC's nonprofit nature means that all profits would go back to benefit member companies.

Health Benefits

The Alliance for Employee Benefit Cooperatives supports health benefit cooperatives that coexist with health care reform. Congressman Robert Andrews of New Jersey proposed measures supporting health cooperatives during the health reform debate in 2009.

Retirement Benefits

Retirement benefits are another area in which the AEBC supports employee benefit cooperatives. The AEBC supports changes to federal law that would allow employee benefit cooperatives to act as a single employer under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act.

Homemade Solar Distillation

Homemade Solar Distillation

Solar distillation uses the heat of the sun to remove salt from water. It is used to create fresh drinking water when it is otherwise unavailable. There are two basic types of homemade solar distillation stills that you can create. One is set in the ground and the other is an independent freestanding unit, also called a basin. Which to choose depends on the purpose of them as well as basics such as weather and surroundings.

How it Works

All solar distillation stills use the same concept. The sun heats impure water, causing it to evaporate. Since salt can not evaporate, the vaporized water is purified. The still captures the vapors as they condense back into water. Think about when you boil water in a pot. When it steams, water collects on the lid of the pot. Those drips are purified water. If you were to evaporate the entire pot of water, you would notice a residue left behind in the pot, which was the salt content of the water along with other additives that couldn't evaporate. A solar still uses the same concept, but with the sun as the sole heat source.

In Ground

A ground pit is most commonly used as a resource for clean water while hiking or performing other survivalist feats. To create a ground pit, dig a conical hole in the ground, about 2 feet in diameter. Place a cup at the bottom of the pit. If available, take a few pieces of vegetation and place it on the sides of the pit. This vegetation will encourage water production within the pit. Take a large piece of plastic and hang it over the whole pit, with the lowest point resting just above the cup. Place a small rock in the center of the plastic to keep the low point above the cup. Secure the plastic in place using rocks or other heavy objects. Water should collect on the plastic and run down into the cup.

Basin

A solar basin still is a freestanding unit that has the same basic process as a ground pit, but with the advantage of portability in some cases, and longevity in most. Many plans are available to construct a still from basic materials available at large home construction stores. The most common still uses a single tilted piece of glass to collect the water. The process varies slightly depending on the plans you have chosen, but most have the same basic process. A piece of glass is set on an angle over a basin of impure water. The basin can be made of any waterproof material such as wood or plastic. The bottom of the basin is most commonly concrete and sometimes stained a dark color to draw the sun's heat. The sun heats the water, causing it to evaporate, rise, and condense onto the glass above it. The newly purified water runs off of the angled glass into a series of tubes and into a storage unit.

Get Rid Of Anxiety Caused Shortness Of Breath

When anxiety causes shortness of breath, the feeling can be alarming. Even though you may be breathing rapidly, you still feel as though you can't get enough air. What is happening is that you are hyperventilating. Hyperventilation frequently occurs with anxiety attacks or feelings of generalized anxiety. Finding a way to stop hyperventilating will get rid of the shortness of breath that anxiety can cause.

Instructions

1. Talk to yourself. Telling yourself, "It is anxiety and it will pass," will often help you to calm down and begin to breath at a normal rate again. With any anxiety-related symptom, understanding the cause can help relieve anxiety. Since you know you are hyperventilating, you don't have to worry that you are short of breath because there is something horribly wrong. Keep in mind that hyperventilation can be very subtle and doesn't always involve loud and overly rapid respirations.

2. Sit down and put your hand on your stomach. If you do not feel your stomach rising with each inhalation, you are breathing by using your upper chest. This makes hyperventilation much more likely. Switch to belly breathing, and practice doing it often. Changing the habit of chest breathing will reduce instances of anxiety-related shortness of breath.

3. Do yoga breathing. Put your hand on your stomach to make sure that you are taking breaths from your belly and not your chest. Inhale very slowly through your nose to a count of seven. Hold your breath for a count of four. Exhale through your mouth to a count of seven. Purse your lips when you are exhaling, as though you are blowing out a birthday candle.Take a couple of regular belly breaths, and repeat. Do this until you have broken the cycle of being short of breath due to anxiety. This technique works due to raising the levels of carbon dioxide in your blood, which become out of balance when you are hyperventilating.

4. Talk to your doctor about taking a beta-blocker for hyperventilation or an anxiety medication. These can block the symptoms of too much adrenaline, which can cause hyperventilation.

Make A Wrapped Moldavite Necklace

Moldavite is a rare stone that you can fashion into gorgeous and unique jewelry. Moldavite typically has a dull green or olive green color and is thought to be formed by meteorites. Although you can purchase premade necklaces with wire-wrapped moldavite, you can also make your own necklace by wrapping moldavite with wire and connecting it to a chain.

Instructions

1. Cut your main jewelry wire into three 20cm sections and line them up to form a straight wire ribbon.

2. Wrap the smaller gauge wire around the center of the wire ribbon four to five times, using the flat-nose pliers to maintain a firm tension around the wire ribbon. Use the flat-nose pliers to pinch the ends of this smaller wire tightly against the main ribbon.

3. Use the pliers to wrap the ribbon around your stone lengthwise.

4. Take one of the free ends of the wire and bend it into a loop using the round-nose pliers. Make sure the loop lies flush with the top of the moldavite.

5. Wrap the other long end around the wire loop from the top of the stone to the top of the loop.

6. Use the flat-nose pliers to move the two wire strands on the exterior of the ribbon so they surround the sides of the moldavite stone. These two strands should be opposite each other and will hold the moldavite stone in place. You can bend these wires if you want to change the design around your wire-wrapped moldavite stone.

7. Connect the wire wrapping to your jewelry chain. Use the clasp on your jewelry chain to encompass the wire loop you formed in Step 4.

Get Rid Of Ants Without Harming Cats

Use natural ingredients to safely get rid of ants.

Ants are a household nuisance, especially in the summer. Most people use pesticides or sticky traps to kill ants, but these can be harmful to cats. There are two types of ants that invade houses, sugar ants and grease ants. Fortunately, both can be killed by natural methods that are both good for the environment and safe for your cat.

Instructions

1. Watch the ants to determine the points at which they enter the house.

2. Seal off any holes at these points with a silicon caulk gun.

3. Clean these points using vinegar or water with dish detergent. This will help kill some of the ants and prevent them from walking in these areas.

4. Set out shallow dishes of maple syrup at these points. If the ants are sugar ants, they will crawl into the maple syrup and drown. If you do not find ants in the syrup within two days and there are still ants crawling in the house, then they are grease ants.

5. Place peanut oil in shallow dishes at the points of entry to kill grease ants.

Causes Of Phleboliths

Phleboliths are masses, clots or growths that develop in the wall of a vein and are composed of calcium or lime. They are stationary and harmless but can indicate the presence of more dangerous conditions or diseases. Common in the pelvic area, phleboliths can also develop in the esophagus, kidney, stomach and intestines. Most adults have phleboliths and are unaffected by them.

Urinary Phleboliths

Urinary phleboliths have been found to be caused, most often, by injuries to vein walls that result from excessive pressure in the veins or other stresses placed on the vascular system.

Bowel Movements

Straining while defecating can also cause increased pressure within the veins and tubes of abdominal organs, which can also lead to the development of phleboliths. (See Ref. #4)

Liver Disease

Lack of blood flow caused by liver disease can lead to phlebolith formation in the veins of the stomach, intestines and other organs located within the abdominal cavity.

Varicose Veins

Researchers of the congenital Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome have found that overstressed, or varicose veins, were linked to phlebolith formation and were often the result of thromboses, or past clotting of blood and lymph vessels.

Diverticular Disease

Some experts speculate that a relation between diverticular disease of the colon and pelvic phleboliths exists. The two conditions have been linked, and researchers suggest both develop after prolonged consumption of a low-fiber diet. Such diets contain large amounts of processed foods, meats, refined sugar and white flour. Low-fiber diets result in low-bulk bowel movements, which are not as easily moved through the colon. As a result, extra stress and overwork of muscles lead to increased pressure in the tubes of the colon, which can lead to the development of phleboliths.

Phleboliths and More Serious Conditions

The presence of phleboliths can be a warning sign that more severe conditions, such as colorectal hemangiomas (benign tumors), are growing in the body of young patients. The masses can also indicate that a patient has stomach cancer or tumors of the gastrointestinal tract.

Get Pregnant If I Have Secondary Amenorrhea

Two percent of U.S. women will suffer from secondary amenorrhea during their lifetime. This is a condition in which there are missed menstrual periods, without a pregnancy or other common cause such as stress. Women suffering from secondary amenorrhea find it more difficult but not impossible to become pregnant.

Is pregnancy possible?

Secondary amenorrhea does not cause infertility in woman, unless a loss of period has been evident without treatment for many months or even years. In 85 percent of cases, a simple change in diet or lifestyle might bring hormones back in balance, allowing for a healthy, easy pregnancy.

Pregnancy, continued

When lifestyle changes don't work, hormone replacements might be prescribed. Untreated secondary amenorrhea can make it more difficult to get pregnant, and it can lead to osteoporosis.

Considerations

If you haven't had your period for a few months and aren't pregnant, it's important to see a doctor. Unless it is treated, secondary amenorrhea can have unpleasant side effects, and it will make pregnancy later in life very difficult to achieve.

South Beach Diet Low Carbohydrate Foods

The South Beach diet was developed by Dr. Arthur Agatston. The South Beach diet advocates avoiding "bad" carbohydrates such as processed foods and those made with white sugar and white flour as ingredients. This differs from other diet methods that involve avoidance of all carbohydrates, regardless of their nutritional value.

Phase One

The South Beach diet is performed in three phases. The first phase, lasting two weeks, is the most restrictive phase, especially concerning carbohydrates. During phase one, dieters are prohibited from consuming any baked goods, cereals, pasta, oats, potatoes, yams, dairy products, rice, flour, fruits and beverages containing sugar such as orange juice or soda. Simply eliminating these foods from a normal diet will create a low-carbohydrate diet. This challenges the dieter to find new foods to replace the typical carbohydrate foods which compose the bulk of many people's diets.

Some examples of replacing carbohydrate foods include making faux mashed potatoes using boiled cauliflower. The cauliflower is boiled until soft enough to mash up. Then roasted garlic and pepper can be added. This recipe gives the person the same satisfaction of eating mashed potatoes without the carbohydrates. Rice can be replaced by shredding cabbage and steaming it. Chicken and vegetables can be served on this rice replacement for tasty stir fries. Bread is something that many people on low-carbohydrate diets miss, but sandwiches can be created by wrapping the sandwich fillings in large lettuce leaves and eating them as wraps. Crunchy sliced vegetables such as carrots, cucumbers, kohlrabies or radishes can be used in place of crackers to eat tuna salad or hummus, which is a spread created from garbanzo beans.

Phase Two

During the second phase of the South Beach diet, dieters can introduce small amounts of fruit, oats, rice or pasta into their diet. Breads are usually still out unless they are whole grain varieties containing no white flour. Even then, bread should be eaten in small amounts. This phase continues until the dieter has reached their desired weight. This phase of the diet is still low in carbohydrates, but substitutions are much more easily made. Oats can be ground into a powder to be used in place of white flour in many recipes. White potatoes are still not acceptable on the diet, but yams can be eaten in place of them. A little ingenuity in the kitchen will go a long way during this phase. For those who are cooking challenged, there are several South Beach diet cookbooks containing easy-to-prepare recipes.

Phase Three

The third and final phase of the South Beach diet begins when the individual's weight loss goals have been reached and involves enjoying processed carbohydrates in moderation while maintaining healthy body weight. Replacing heavily processed carbohydrates and sugars with more natural and healthy ingredients should be second nature at this point. Those who reach the third phase will have gained the understanding that this diet is more than a temporary fix. It is a lifestyle change.

Buy A Van With A Lift

If you need a van that is able to transport a disabled person in a wheelchair, that van is going to have to have a lift. Buying a van with a lift is not as hard as you might think. While you might not see dealerships lined up along the street that specialize in such a thing, the ones that do know exactly what disabled individuals need to travel from place to place effectively.

Instructions

1. Find dealers in your area that specialize in handicap-accessible vehicles through the NMEDA (The National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association) website, listed as a Resource below.

2. Decide whether you want to purchase a new or used van. The used van is going to save you money, but a lift is just one more thing that can go wrong in a vehicle if it is already in poor condition.

3. Find out if your insurance covers any of the cost in buying the van. Some insurance companies may be willing to pay a portion of the cost if you show them that it is for medical reasons.

4. Try the van out. This doesn't mean to just test drive the van. This means that you should actually test out the lift. Ask an employee to show you work the lift if you have never done so before. If possible, have the disabled individual who will be riding in the van there to test the lift.

5. Look into options to customize the van for the particular needs of the disabled person that will be riding in it. Companies that sell handicap-accessible vans are used to a wide variety of needs that have to be met, and many will be able to accommodate you.

Get Physicians To Lower Medical Bills

Some physicians outsource their medical billing services to companies that allow you negotiating power in getting your bills lowered. Management at these companies are more than willing to work with patients in getting their bills resolved in the fastest way possible. Following are steps to help you lower your medical bills.

Instructions

1. Collect all related bills for physicians who rendered your medical services. Combine them by each date of service.

2. Sort the bills according to each physician who treated you even if they contain the same "remit to" address on your bills. It is very important that you do this because each physician, although working within a particular billing group, will have his own personal agenda when it comes to collections and how much allowance he is willing to make.

3. Consolidate all individual medical bills for each physician. Once this is done, you will want to write down the grand total for each.

4. Write a letter to each physician expressing your thanks for his professional and courteous service. Physicians are very aware of how costly medical bills are so your letter will not come as a surprise to them. Briefly explain any trying circumstances that prevent you from paying the total. Be honest, keeping in mind that doctors also read many scam letters. Express your desire to settle your account as quickly as possible. Offer to settle for 50 percent of the grand total. You will be surprised at how many physicians will lower your bills and accept this amount. It never hurts to start high. Office management will probably counter-offer with a higher amount but lower than the original amount. If your 50 percent offer is not accepted, you will still be saving money off the original charge.

5. Verify the doctor's office has received your letter after you've mailed it. If the physician handles his own billing, he will be forwarded a copy of your letter from his staff. If he outsources his billing, the management staff will evaluate your letter and either follow protocol already in place for that physician or they will consult with the physician who will then instruct them on what is acceptable as payment in full.

6. Pay your bill according to whatever terms you outlined in your letter. This will assure the physician that any future visits will be honored as well. If another request is needed due to future visits, he will be more inclined to lower them as well.

Comparison Of Blue Zircon & Blue Topaz

Blue zircon and blue topaz make popular jewelry items.

Blue zircon and blue topaz are gemstones that have become increasingly popular in jewelry in recent years. They are used to make cufflinks, bracelets, rings, earrings and pendants. Both blue zircon and blue topaz appear similar but have distinct physical and chemical properties.

Physical Properties

Blue zircon measures 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs hardness scale (which lists minerals on the basis of their scratch resistance), has a specific gravity of approximately 4.15 and a refractive index that ranges from 1.77 to 1.98. Blue zircon reacts poorly to heat and may lighten in color upon prolonged exposure to excessive heat.

Blue topaz measures 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, has a specific gravity, or density, that ranges from 3.56 to 3.57 and a refractive index between 1.61 and 1.62.

Formation

Zircon is a naturally occurring gemstone known for its diversity of color. Red, brown and gray brown zircons are the most commonly occurring natural varieties of the stone. Blue zircon, also called starlite, is produced when brown, red, reddish brown or partially transparent zircons are heated (at temperatures ranging from 1,472 degrees Fahrenheit and 1,832 degrees Fahrenheit) in the absence of oxygen.

Topaz is a naturally occurring birthstone that exists in a variety of colors--including orange, red, violet, brown, pink, green and yellow. Naturally found blue topaz is extremely rare and most commercially available varieties are produced when colorless or white topaz is irradiated with gamma rays.

Birthstone

Blue zircon is the birthstone for December, while blue topaz is a November birthstone.

Occurrence

Zircon is mined primarily from Burma, Cambodia and Africa.

The main sources of blue topaz are Brazil, United States and Burma.

Formula and Chemical Makeup

The chemical formula of blue zircon is ZrSiO4. It is a mixture of silicon dioxide (SiO2) and zirconium oxide (ZrO2).

The chemical formula of blue topaz is Al2(F,OH)2SiO4. It is an aluminum silicate mineral that is made up of 56.5 percent aluminum oxide (Al2O3), 33.3 percent silicon dioxide (SiO2), 10 percent (iron) F and 10 percent hydroxide (OH).

Metaphysical Properties

Blue topaz is associated with heightened humor, calmness, self-expression, communication and understanding.

According to Isabel Bellamy and Donald MacLean in the book "Radiant Healing," blue zircon fosters praying and spirituality.

Hazardous Information

According to Antoinette Matlins and Antonio C. Bonanno in the book "Jewelry & Gems, the Buying Guide," deeper blue topazes that endure extensive heat treatment are found to be radioactive--a fact verified by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Blue topaz bought outside the United States must be tested for its level of radioactivity.

Zirconium contains trace amounts of radioactive elements but their values are commonly too low to cause any danger.

Get In A Car After Hip Surgery

Getting in and out of the car is one of the most difficult and potentially painful activities for someone who has had a hip replacement. The ride home from the hospital can be quite problematic if the individual does not know the best way to approach this dilemma. With the help of a family member, friend or hospital staff, this chore is doable with a minimum amount of discomfort. Knowing the right way to get into and out of a vehicle will allow you to get home and then back and forth to appointments.

Instructions

1. Avoid trying to get in or out of your car by yourself. Refusing help is not only false bravado, it is potentially dangerous as you may dislocate your hip after a replacement surgery.

2. Remember, the key precautions for a hip replacement patient are to avoid bending forward more than 90 degrees, avoid crossing your legs at all times, never rotate your surgically-repaired leg outwards and never bring your knee up so that it is higher than your hip. People commonly employ these movements when entering a vehicle so you must make a concentrated effort not to do so.

3. Instruct someone to place the back of the passenger's seat in the reclined position as far as he can. Sit down slowly on the car seat with your legs facing out the car door. Have someone place your crutches into the back seat of the car.

4. Have the person aiding you lift up your left leg as you lay back on the car seat. Tell the person to support your leg by holding the heel of your foot and the back of your calf. Scoot up so that your leg will clear the car door as the person slowly swings the leg into the car. Make sure they go slowly, especially if your left leg was the one the surgeon operated on. Do not try to swing the leg in under your own power.

5. Stay in a reclined position as your helper swings your right leg into the car. This will be a painful proposition if your doctor operated on your right leg. Instruct them to go slowly, but remember to stay in a reclined position and as far "up" on the seat as you can be so the leg will easily clear the door and swing into the car.

6. Place a pillow under your head for comfort during the ride. Stay in the reclined position since sitting up will bring you close to breaking your precautions and create a potentially dangerous scenario. Have the person helping you connect your seat belt.

7. Exit the car in the reverse manner you got into it. Have someone slowly support your leg and swing it out, as you stay reclined and back on the seat. Have them remove the other leg in the same way before you sit up. Acquire your crutches and stand slowly as you leave the car.

Natural Teeth Whiteners

More and more people seem to be concerned with the color of their teeth. This newfound awareness has led many people to take greater care of their pearly whites, but it has also led to the arrival of a number of obscure products and mall-whitening stations that may do more harm to your teeth than good. If you're looking for a method with which to brighten your smile without the use of chemicals, you may be happy to learn that there are some fairly effective means to naturally whiten your teeth, and they are found (not so surprisingly) in the toothpaste aisle.

Identification

One of the most widely disseminated products for naturally whitening your teeth can be found in your grocer's produce section: the strawberry. While it may seem to defy logic, especially in light of all the commercials showing berries staining a person's smile, the malic acid found within a strawberry actually acts as a natural whitening instrument. Essentially, this little piece of produce can buff away the staining from coffee, wine or nicotine, among other discoloring agents.

Function

Though a simple swipe of the strawberry can quickly remove some stains from your teeth, you can increase its efficacy by making your own "toothpaste." In a small bowl, crush a single ripe strawberry into a mush. Add 1/2 tsp. of baking soda and mix until well blended. Smooth the mixture over your teeth and let it stand for about 5 minutes. Brush your teeth with a store-brand toothpaste and rinse. Your teeth should be a whiter than before. Due to the nature of the acid in the strawberry, you shouldn't apply this mixture more than once a week, as it may damage the enamel of your teeth.

Potential

An alternative method that many people swear by is to use another item found in the produce aisle -- the orange. Actually, it's the peel of an orange that is often used to naturally whiten your teeth, but you'll have to buy the whole fruit to employ this technique (unless, of course, you're out to dinner and there's a slice on your plate as a garnish). Who ever knew restaurants have been providing a "free" means of cleaning your teeth for years? Simply rub the inside of the peel along the surface of your teeth to give them a quick polish.

Another technique of naturally whitening your teeth is to make a sort of whitening wash out of a little lemon juice and salt. It may sound like something you'd drink for a cold, but it's purported to work. Basically, the wash is made of a 3-to-1 ratio of lemon to salt (3 tbsp. of lemon juice to 1 tbsp. of salt). Swish it in your mouth for about a minute or so, then brush as you normally would.

Warning

It is best to use any naturally acidic product--like oranges, lemons and even strawberries--in moderation. This extends to their use as natural teeth-whitening agents. Don't apply any of the aforementioned mixtures more than once a week, as doing so may damage the enamel of your teeth. Of course, this doesn't mean that you should simply alternate them. Only use any type of natural whitening agent once a week or less.

Expert Insight

One of the most "natural" ways of whitening your teeth is to have them professionally cleaned at your dentist's office. This has nothing to do with applying a whitening agent to your teeth; it solely has to do with thorough cleaning. Many people actually attest to whiter teeth when they add an additional visit every year. Instead of going every 6 months, they'll make an appointment for every 4.

Where Get Financing For Lapband Surgery

Lap band surgery is a procedure in which a small portion of the stomach is banded in order to create less space for food, which makes an individual feel full more quickly when eating. Whether your insurance policy pays for lap band surgery or not, it is possible to have the surgery done without having to save up enough money to cover the entire price of the surgery.

The Costs

Lap band surgery costs vary widely across the United States, and how much money you can expect to pay for the surgery is contingent upon a variety of factors, including the health plan that you have and whether it covers a percentage of the surgery costs; which doctor or hospital you choose; and whether the procedure is done as an out-patient or in-patient surgery. Total costs can range from $12,000 to $25,000, which includes the fee for hospital space, the surgeon's fee and the cost of the anesthesiologist. Any adjustments needed in the first year will also be included in this total cost. Follow-up appointment fees for the first year following surgery can fall between $35 and $200 for each visit.

Insurance

While some insurance companies, including Medicare and Medicaid in some states, have started to cover lap band surgery under certain conditions, there are others that still consider lap band surgery an unnecessary procedure and won't pay for it. Health plans that do cover lap band surgery generally require prior authorization before the surgery is done and require individuals to meet minimum criteria to prove the necessity of the procedure.

Payment Plan

If you have been going to the same hospital or surgeon for many years, it may be possible to set up a payment plan. When you receive the bill, a payment plan can usually be set up by simply calling the hospital and speaking to a financial representative. These plans are often interest-free and have very low fees involved, which makes a direct payment plan an ideal way to pay back medical expenses.

Some hospitals may require cash payments up front. However, as the hospital benefits from a large one-time payment, cash patients often can get discounts on their care. The individual costs involved in the lap band surgery will often be lumped together with a small discount given for paying up front.

Healthcare Lenders

If your insurance policy doesn't cover the lap band surgery and you don't have the money to pay for it up front, it may be possible to get a loan for the surgery expenses. Surgery Loans, MyMedicalLoan and Citerra Financial are some of the financial institutions that provide financing for medical procedures. This financing works like any standard loan, providing a payment plan and charging interest until the money is paid back. Applying for these loans can be done by calling the company.

Prevent Light Pollution

Using artificial lighting that is permitted to light somewhere that does not need to be lit is known as light pollution. Light pollution is on the rise in our society, and it can be an issue if it is utilized in the wrong areas. Sixty percent of light usage comes from city lights that are not energy efficient.

Instructions

1. Diminish light coming from your house during the night. Try to do activities requiring a light during the day time, and use the night time for sleeping. If lights must be turned on, turn on fewer lights than usual and have thick, tight blinds on the windows to prevent the light from being seen from the outside of the house.

2. Tell your family and friends about light pollution and encourage them to get on board with helping prevent light pollution. If they help prevent light pollution and also tell their friends and families, then light pollution can be decreased.

3. Use 150W lamps for home security lighting. This will reduce the glare given off by regular 300W lights.

4. Consider turning porch lights off at night. Instead of security lighting, use an alarm system, instead.

5. Write a letter to the city council, proposing that they change the street lights. Floodlights can be pointed downward, and box design lights can be used instead of cobra head lights.

Sporozoa Life Cycle

Mosquitoes complete the complex life cycle of the sporozoan that causes malaria.

Sporozoa are parasitic microorganisms that live at the expense of another organism known as the host. Sporozoa generally have very complex life cycles that require one or more intermediate hosts before they enter their reproductive phase, according to the Oracle Think Ques science website. Some sporozoans cause diseases in their hosts. For example, the sporozoan known as plasmodium vivax is one of four sporozoan species that cause malaria.

Malaria Life Cycle

The complex life cycle of plasmodium vivax is typical of sporozoa, according to Think Quest. This organism requires mosquitoes and primates like human beings to complete its life cycle. Plasmodium grow inside a mosquito's stomach until they reach maturity. At maturity, plasmodium migrate to the mosquito's salivary glands, where they release tiny spore-like reproductive cells called sporozoites. When the mosquito bites a person, it transfers sporozoites to the human bloodstream. They find their way to the liver, where they invade red blood cells.

Away They Grow

The sporozoites grow in the red blood cells, transforming themselves into sexual cells called gametes. When mature, the gametes burst out of the red cells, destroying the cells. Fever and chills are some of the symptoms associated with malaria, according to Think Quest.

The Mosquito Bites

If a mosquito bites the person while malaria symptoms are manifesting, it will suck in plasmodium gametes that unite in the mosquito's stomach to form new plasmodium organisms that start the life cycle all over again. The mosquito phase of the life cycle takes about two weeks, followed by about a two-week incubation phase in the human before symptoms appear.

Sporozoa Are Protists

Sporozoa are one of 14 phylums in the animal kingdom of the protista, better known as the protozoans, said the Snow College biology website. Certain members of the phylums zoomastigina and sarcodina cause other diseases in humans. For instance, the zoomastiginans known as Giardia and Trypanosomes are insect-spread parasites that cause African sleeping sickness and the closely related Chagas disease. Radiolarians from the sarcodina phylum cause amoebic dysentery, and are spread through contaminated water.

Vast Diversity

The vast majority of the 65,000 identified species of protozoans are harmless to humans, according to Kennesaw University's science website. The sporozoa alone comprise 5,500 species. The malaria-causing sporozoa occur throughout the world's tropics and subtropical areas, said Kennesaw U., and kill roughly 2.5 million people a year. Malaria cases have been in an upsurge since 1970 because of drug and insecticide resistance, mosquito control cutbacks due to expense, and increased global travel.

How Does Phentermine Work

Frequent dieters may be familiar with the drug phentermine, a widely prescribed appetite suppressant. Although no longer marketed with fenfluramine as fen-phen because of potentially fatal heart complications, phentermine by itself still enjoys popularity among many dieters. Knowing how phentermine works and being familiar with its side effects can help you determine if this drug is right for you.

Phentermine assists dieters by suppressing their appetite and helping them to ingest fewer calories. It's basically very similar to an amphetamine, or "speed," in its effects upon the body. Phentermine works by stimulating both the hypothalamus, the area of the brain responsible for controlling hunger ,along with other functions, and the release of certain neurotransmitters. These special neurotransmitters, called catecholamines, cause your body to engage in a fight or flight response, which overpowers any hunger messages, thus helping you to eat less. So, phentermine uses both the central nervous system and the hypothalamus to help diminish appetite, and when you eat less, you lose weight. Because of its action upon these parts of the body, phentermine also typically makes the user feel more energetic and less drowsy.

Alas, the hunger suppressing effects of phentermine don't last forever. Typically, as people to continue to use this drug over weeks, they tend to build a tolerance to it, which basically means their body becomes so accustomed to the drug that it stops working as well. However, increasing doses dramatically may not be a good idea. Most doctors will only prescribe phentermine for short-term usage, usually 3 to 6 weeks, due to its addicting nature and high rate of side effects. Because phentermine affects the hypothalamus and nuerotransmitters, it also causes a number of related side effects, including nervousness, panic attacks, insomnia, and irritability, just to name a few. Also, since phentermine can be so addicting, most people need to taper off of it gradually, to avoid the risk of unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.

Bio 7 Pain Therapy

The Bio 7 Pain Relief Device was Once Sold on Television, But It Is Now Difficult to Find.

People who live in a state of constant pain are often open to a variety of alternative ways to alleviate their discomfort that are not usually used by doctors and physical therapists. The Bio 7 infrared pain suppression system is one of several products that use infrared light to alleviate the pain of neuropathy, arthritis and other ailments. The Bio 7 was once popular, but it has fallen off the radar. It is difficult to find a working model.

Photo Therapy Defined

In general, the therapy involves the use of infrared radiation in the form of a heat lamp or low-intensity laser to stimulate mitochondria in the cells. Light is made up of various wavelengths that correspond to different colors. Certain colored light can be especially absorbed by aspects of the cell, including mitochondria.

Mitochondria are the power plants of the human cell and, when introduced to infrared light and red light, they react by stimulating the cells, which leads to the relief of pain. This infrared light or phototherapy has been around for decades and has been proven scientifically to be effective.

Bio 7 Pain Therapist

Bio 7 Pain Therapist is the proper name of the Bio 7 pain suppression system. It uses infrared light similar to traditional phototherapy devices. The apparatus was once sold on television, but it has become increasing difficult to find even through online auction sites.

There have been several endorsements of the product, including those by professional athletes. The reviews have been good with the athletes proclaiming the machines soothed the aches in their muscles (see link in References).

The Bio 7 Pain Therapist is one of many devices using infrared light for pain relief. It is important not to try any pain relief regimen without first contacting your physician to make sure there will be no problems. Ask your doctor or physical therapist if she can recommend a particular brand if you are unable to find the Bio 7. Be wary of any devices that use ultraviolet light as that has been shown to damage the skin and could lead to skin cancer.

Reverse Prediabetes

Once you have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, studies show that there's a good chance that within 5-10 years, you'll end up having diabetes. Of course, if you are willing to make some changes in your life, this doesn't have to be the case. Research shows that you can reverse pre-diabetes if you are willing to commit to it. Diabetes is a nasty disease, so avoiding it is important. Here are several steps that can help you to reverse pre-diabetes before it's too late.

Instructions

1. Get active. This is one of the best ways that you can begin to reverse your problem with pre-diabetes. People who are sedentary often build up insulin resistance. One of the best ways to improve this problem is to get moving. Activity can help to improve your insulin resistance and help your cells burn sugar. In fact, studies have shown that exercise alone can help to improve problems with pre-diabetes even without making other changes in your lifestyle. The best type of exercise to help with this problem is aerobic exercise, which should be done for 30 minutes four to five times each week. Several aerobic exercises that are excellent options include biking, walking, team sports and swimming.

2. Stop smoking as soon as possible. Not only is smoking a top cause of other serious diseases such as heart disease, cancers, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and strokes, it can raise your risk of diabetes as well. If you don't think that you can stop smoking on your own, talk to your doctor. There are many excellent products out there to help smokers stop smoking.

3. Skip the processed and fast foods. One of the main reasons that more and more Americans are getting diabetes and pre-diabetes today is because of their high intake of processed foods and fast food. Eating just one fast-food meal can take up over half your daily allotted calories, not to mention the fat.

4. Eat more fruits and veggies. Many people don't get the amount of fruits and veggies that they need each day. Studies show that those who get five or more servings a day of their fruits and veggies not only can reduce the risk of diabetes but also the risk of strokes, various cardiovascular diseases and heart attack. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables can also help with weight loss, another important aspect of reversing problems with pre-diabetes.

5. Limit your intake of alcohol. While a moderate amount of alcohol can be healthy, drinking too much can elevate pre-diabetes to full-blown Type 2 diabetes. Having one drink each day can actually lower the risk for diabetes, but if you don't limit the amount of alcohol you are drinking, you'll make pre-diabetes even worse.

Get A Popcorn Husk Out Of Your Throat

Common throat obstructions include popcorn husks, fish bones or hard candies.

Nothing can ruin your appetite for a delicious bowl of popcorn more quickly than getting a popcorn husk caught in your throat. While the small size of a popcorn kernel makes this occurrence less urgent than a major throat obstruction, a trapped husk can nonetheless cause significant irritation. You can clear some small items using gentle, non-invasive techniques, while more stubborn pieces require medical intervention. If the husk is painful, or if the sufferer is unable to breathe or speak, seek emergency care immediately.

Instructions

1. Cough and swallow repeatedly. This is your body's natural reaction to the presence of a foreign object, and may dislodge the husk.

2. Drink small sips of water. If swallowing is not painful, try gargling the water and spitting. This may wash the kernel out of your throat successfully.

3. Eat a small, soft piece of food, such as bread. This will stimulate saliva production and could help catch the object without applying significant pressure to the kernel.

4. Enlist a friend or family member to look in your throat. In a well-lit room, or with the aid of a directional lamp, open your mouth wide and depress your tongue. If your friend can see the location of the husk clearly and feels confident in his ability to reach it, allow him to gently dislodge it with a soft cotton swab. Stabilize your head against a wall and encourage your companion to work slowly and carefully. Be mindful of your gag reflex, which may cause you to move your head suddenly. If either of you is uncomfortable with this procedure, discontinue it immediately.

5. Seek a doctor if the feeling of a throat obstruction persists for more than a day, if you develop a fever or if the kernel is ever painful. Although many throat obstructions resolve themselves within a day or two, others may get infected or puncture the esophagus.

Get A Poodle Dog To Calm Down For A Haircut

Teach your poodle to accept haircuts from an early age.

When a poodle has not had proper initiation and training for grooming, giving it the necessary haircut can be extremely difficult. The dog may become a moving target, jumping, pawing and scratching to get away, or it may become aggressive. A few dogs just get frightened and remain very still, but you would like for them to be calmer, not so stressed. It is possible to teach the poodle to calmly accept a haircut and other grooming, but you have to put off the haircut, if possible, and gradually acclimate the dog to each step in getting its hair cut.

Instructions

1. Tire your dog out immediately before a grooming session.

Take your poodle for a long walk immediately before grooming or a haircut. The walk must be long enough to tire your dog out fully. A short walk will just leave your dog all the more energized. A tired dog will be less to manage during grooming.

2. Massage isn't just for pampering.

Massage your poodle when it's first placed on the grooming table or other area you intend to use for grooming. Massage slowly and deeply, as you would want if you had sore muscles, to help your dog relax and associate positive experiences with the grooming area. Massage the back of your dog's neck, its shoulders, along its back and down all the legs. Massage isn't just for pampering; it teaches the dog in a soothing, gentle manner to accept your leadership. At the same time, it teaches the dog to trust you.

3. Give the treat only when the dog is fairly relaxed.

Offer a few tiny training treats that are highly valued by your dog, while it remains calm in the grooming area or on the grooming table. Withhold treats if the dog is acting up, but offer one when the dog is calm.

4. Give the dog the training treats while the scissors and other grooming tools are in sight. As the dog gets more and more comfortable with the sight of the tools, gradually bring them closer for each session.

5. Practice makes perfect, and gradually your dog will be calm for a haircut.

Stop the session at this point, without any grooming or haircut. Repeat steps one through five, without actually cutting the hair, for as many sessions as possible before beginning to actually groom the dog. When the grooming begins, move slowly and try to keep the dog calm and accepting. If you see the dog is getting upset and having trouble calming down, go back to doing something the dog has already mastered and then end the session on that good note, with a treat.

6. Some dogs must have a haircut now.

Take your poodle to a veterinarian for safe, veterinary-supervised sedation if your dog is severely matted, filthy or for any reason cannot wait to have a haircut. Once the veterinarian gets the dog's hair and skin under control, you can begin to work on steps one through five until your dog gradually calms down for all grooming. Waiting for a haircut when the hair is severely matted can result in skin infection and pain for the dog from the hair constantly pulling with every move.

Prostatectomy Treatment

A prostatectomy involves the surgical removal of some or all of the prostate gland, typically involving prostate cancer. There are many types of this type of prostate surgery.

Prostate Transurethral Resection

In this procedure, a cystoscope is sent to the prostate and prostate tissue is removed. This type of prostatectomy is most commonly performed on benign prostate cancer, and outcomes are reported as quite high for those undergoing the procedure.

Open Prostatectomy

This operation involves a skin incision and removal of the prostate through the prostatic capsule or bladder. It is most commonly used on large prostates.

Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy

Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy involves four small incisions in the abdomen, whereupon the entire prostate is removed.

Robotic-Assisted Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy

Robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy is used primarily for localized prostate cancer and features assistance from a machine featuring robotic arms. The procedure features smaller incision, less pain, and faster healing times compared to a typical open prostatectomy. It is, however, a rather costly procedure.

Radical Perineal or Retropubic Prostatectomy

In the perineal procedure, an incision is made in the perineum, and the prostate is removed. In the retropubic operation, the incision is made in the lower abdomen, and the prostate is removed by going just behind the pubic bone. These are two of the more popular forms of prostatectomy treatment.

History Of Alternative Medicine

Alternative medicine has existed in the realm of medicine for decades. It has been used by people in the ancient ages in treating a variety of diseases and disorders. It was overshadowed by the popularity of conventional medicine sometime in history; however, it is again fast gaining popularity among many people.

What is Alternative Medicine?

Alternative medicine is the use of holistic approaches in treating different symptoms of diseases and disorders. Unlike conventional medicine, alternative medicine does not rely on the use of drugs, surgery and other medical procedures. On the contrary, it uses natural substances and natural means to treat illnesses. Alternative medicine focuses on restoring the body's overall health, thereby strengthening the immune system and gradually healing sickness or disease in the process.

Chinese Traditional Medicine

Chinese traditional medicine is one of the forerunners of the current concept of alternative medicine. It quickly spread to Japan and Korea, and later to Europe and other Western nations. Chinese traditional medicine is based on the Taoist philosophy, which relies on the belief that a strong human body will never fall ill. It is aimed at healing the human mind and body instead of directly treating the disease. Acupuncture is a well-known form of treatment in Chinese traditional medicine.

Ayurvedic Medicine

Ayurvedic medicine was a popular form of treating illnesses thousands of years ago. It uses natural minerals, herbs, fruits and certain vegetables to treat sickness. It was especially prescribed for the treatment of common colds, paralysis, stroke and mental illnesses. The concept of this form of treatment revolves around the balance and harmony of the mind, soul and body. Ayurvedic medicine is still widely used today by many alternative medicine practitioners.

Alternative Medicine in Europe and America

The use of alternative medicine was prevalent in Europe and America in past centuries. Herbalism, naturopathy, and hydrotherapy are common forms of treating illnesses. In the 19th century, homeopathy was introduced by German doctor, Dr. Samuel Hahneman and it was also used widely in many Western countries. Homeopathy was originally discovered and first practiced by Hippocrates, a Greek physician also known as the Father of Medicine.

Scientific Revolution

At the start of the 19th century, scientific discoveries led to the creation of conventional medicine. The discovery of penicillin in 1928 by Alexander Fleming boosted the popularity of conventional medicine. Since then, may other scientific discoveries were made and more conventional medicines were developed. The scientific revolution led to the decline of the use of alternative medicine. Many medical practitioners, or doctors, replaced the popularity of faith healers and homeopathic doctors.

Get A Chiropractic Thoracic Adjustment

Get a Chiropractic Thoracic Adjustment

A person who sits at a desk for long periods of time often develops pain and tightness in the thoracic region, which includes the neck and back. By making thoracic adjustments, chiropractors can relieve this pain and tightness.

Instructions

1. Visit the American Chiropractic Association website. Here you'll find a wealth of information for patients considering chiropractic care. You can also locate a chiropractor in your area by entering your zip code on this website (see Resources below).

2. Describe your symptoms and your lifestyle to your chiropractor. The chiropractor will evaluate your spine and check for motion and mobility as well as inflammation.

3. Get a thoracic adjustment. Depending on the individual chiropractor, this happens in a number of different ways. Some chiropractors ask you to lie on your stomach and use their hands to adjust your spine. Others use handheld tools. And still others ask you to wrap your arms around your front--as if you are giving yourself a hug--and then manipulate your spine from the front of your body.

4. Ask your chiropractor what you can do to help your body heal. Your treatment plan will probably involve a number of visits, but there are things that you can do between visits to make yourself feel better. For example, if your job or school requires you to work at a computer for long periods of time, you should consider doing stretching exercises at regular intervals throughout the day.

Focus And Think Clearly

Calm, clear thinking doesn't have to be complicated.

Knowing focus and think clearly is an invaluable skill. The demands of life, work and relationships demand that you be able to "think on your feet." However, life is full of stress and distractions, which are detrimental to focusing and clear thinking.

Practice focusing on a daily basis to train your mind. Take breaks, eliminate distractions and focus your mind. The more you practice these techniques, the easier it will be for you to focus and think clearly.

Instructions

1. Stop what you are doing. Take a deep breath. Focus on your breathing. The act of breathing in and out will calm you down and help center your mind on one task.

2. Find a place where you can be alone, even if it is the bathroom at work. If you must stay where you are, close your eyes for a few minutes.

3. Assess your stress. Distractions generally occur when you are stressed or frazzled by deadlines, noise or other people. Think of all the people, places and things that distract you during the course of a day. Now imagine these distractions slowly disappearing until all you see in your mind is emptiness.

4. Develop a mantra, or phrase, to use in times of stress and distraction. Say "My mind is a blank canvas" or "Relax and focus." The phrase should be simple yet powerful, and meaningful to you.

5. Repeat your chosen phrase while breathing deeply to center your mind and begin thinking clearly.

Thrombolytic Therapy For Ischemic Stroke

Ischemic strokes make up an estimated 85 percent of all strokes. This type of stroke occurs when a blood clot forms in the brain or when a clot forms in the heart and travels to the brain. (Other types of strokes, known as hemorrhagic strokes, involve ruptured arteries in the brain.) Thrombolytic therapy refers to the breakdown of blood clots by delivering thrombolytic drugs, which are tissue plasminogen activator (tPa), streptokinase, alteplase or urokinase.

Arrival at the Hospital

People who exhibit signs of a stroke, such as slurred words, blurred vision, paralysis on one side of the body or an extreme headache, must be taken immediately to a hospital emergency room. Each minute that a stroke continues, the lack of oxygen to the brain destroys brain cells, and the longer a stroke victim waits, the fewer treatment options are available.

At the hospital, a stroke team will determine what type of stroke is occurring. This is typically done using a computed tomography, or CT, scan to view the brain and any blockages.

Thrombolytic Therapy

A physician will administer a thrombolytic drug, based on a few key factors. First, the stroke must be caused by a blood clot. Second, the stroke's onset must have been less than three hours prior to treatment; after that, thrombolytic drugs could cause adverse side effects, such as bleeding in the brain.

Usually, a doctor will choose tPa, a protein, to treat the clot; other clot-busters are made from bacteria, to which the body could build up a resistance.

tPa Takes Effect

Thrombolytic drugs differ from other stroke therapies in that they do not immediately break up the clot; instead such drugs reduce or shrink the clot. A thrombolytic drug is administered intravenously in an arm. Once the drug is circulated in the body, it can reduce blood clots in the heart and brain and restore blood flow.
