Enuresis Exercises







Behavior modification in both adults and children can reduce enuresis.


Enuresis refers to the involuntary discharge of urine. Commonly termed "incontinence" in adults and "bedwetting" in children, the condition can be caused by a variety of factors including genetic disposition, sleep apnea, stressful events and by urinary tract infections. In addition, chronic constipation may irritate the bladder and cause enuresis. Therefore, a physician should conduct a thorough examination to rule out infection and constipation before individuals begin behavior modification exercises.


Proper Hydration








Fluid intake should be limited in the evenings.


According to the Continence Foundation, individuals should consume at least one and a half to two liters of fluid each day. The majority of the fluid consumption should be during the day and limited in the evenings. Alcoholic and caffeinated beverages may irritate the bladder and are not advised.


Voiding Schedule


Urination before bed may reduce enuresis.


Voiding after waking up in the morning, every two hours and before going to bed is advised. In addition, scheduling a time to wake up during the night to urinate may be needed. Experts encourage urination before leaving home, school or work. Individuals should not hold their urine in an attempt to expand bladder capacity as studies have indicated that urinary infections may result in this practice.


Kegel Exercises


Kegel exercises strengthen the muscles involved in urination and bowel movements. As with any muscles, if they are not regularly engaged, they may weaken. Therefore, by routinely contracting the muscles in this area, enuresis may be resolved.


Enuresis Alarms


Enuresis alarms are attached to pajamas.


If voiding schedules and limited hydration have not resolved enuresis, then an enuresis alarm may be the next step in behavior modification. Upon sensing the first few drops of moisture, the alarm may either sound or vibrate to wake the individual before the bladder is fully voided, thus conditioning the user to wake upon the feeling of a full bladder.

Asbestos is a type of insulation used extensively in the 19th century before its adverse effects were known. Asbestosis








Asbestosis causes thickening of the lining of the outer lung and prevents the lungs from expanding and functioning normally. As of 2010, to our knowedge, there was not yet a cure for asbestosis; treatment concentrates on easing symptoms, such as by administering extra oxygen.


Mesothelioma


Mesothelioma is a type of lung cancer that can manifest as late as 60 years after first exposure to asbestos. It affects the mesothelial cells that form a membrane on the surface of most internal organs. Most patients with mesothelioma die within 3 years of diagnosis, as there is still no cure.


Avoiding Asbestos


You can take a few simple steps to avoid asbestos-related disease. Don't work with asbestos without special training, and use hand tools instead of power tools. Wear a proper asbestos mask to avoid inhaling the deadly dust, as a standard dust mask is not effective enough. When extracting asbestos, use a powerful vacuum to remove dust as it forms.

With a broken bone, there are many precautions you have to take to make sure it heals properly, and you will need to deal with regaining strength and movement in the area. Wearing a cast will help to ensure that the bone sets, but in the meantime, the muscles and tendons in the area get weaker and stiffer. Physical therapy can help heal and strengthen your foot.


Healing


When you have a broken foot set, the doctor generally uses a cast. The cast limits your movements, which is to help to keep you from re-injuring the bone or to keep it from setting in an improper position. Your foot and ankle will be kept stiff for the duration of time you wear the cast. Because you're not using your muscles in that area, they can become weak. You probably are bearing most of your weight on your other foot or on crutches, not on the leg with the injured foot. No matter what kind of break you had, or how many, you will want to rehabilitate your foot and ankle area once the cast has been removed.


Physical Therapy


Professional physical therapy is a good option. The therapists will find the right kind and intensity of physical activity for your specific injury, and they will be able to answer any questions you have about the healing and rehabilitation process. However, some people cannot afford to attend physical therapy sessions, or they don't have time to do so on a regular basis. There are several activities you can do at home that can help to strengthen your foot and regain mobility in your foot and ankle joints.


Alphabet in the Air








One of the easiest exercises to gain flexibility in the area is to use your foot to write numbers or the alphabet in the air. This can be done several times throughout the day, for about five or 10 minutes. You should warm up beforehand by rotating your ankle slowly and gently in both directions. This will help you to gain strength and flexibility without putting too much strain on the area.


Exercise Bands


There are also many types of exercise bands you can buy at health and fitness stores or department stores. These elastic-like bands can be attached to the foot, with the other side can be attached to a door handle or some other sturdy object, and you can gently pull on it with your foot, stretching and strengthening the area.

Instructions


1. Calibrate your scale before you weigh yourself. Do this by placing a known weight such as a 5-lb. bag of flour, directly on the scale. After you make sure the scale is correct, step on the scale and weigh yourself. Write down your exact weight. If you do not have a scale at home you can also obtain your current weight at your regular Weight Watchers meeting.


2. Exercise for a minimum of 10 minutes. During your workout take note of the intensity of your activity. To do this follow Weight Watchers intensity level specifications: Low intensity means you aren't sweating at all during your activity; Moderate intensity means you begin sweating after 10 minutes; High intensity means you begin sweating three to five minutes after starting your activity.


3. Using your Weight Watchers' Points Booster tool calculate your activity points by aligning your intensity level with the number of minutes you exercised. Without moving the slide, marking your intensity level, locate your body weight. Now, look in the window next to your body weight and the Points Booster will display your activity points value.

Transition From Effexor XR to Pristiq

Instructions








1. Taper off your Effexor XR dosage with the help of your doctor. For example, if you are taking Effexor XR 300 milligram capsules, lower the dosage to the next lowest dose for two to three days.


2. Lower your Effexor XR dosage until you have reached the lowest dosage of 37.5 milligrams. Take the lower dosage for two to three days.

Stop Using Tobacco







Quitting tobacco is often very difficult for some people, because your body becomes physically dependent on nicotine and can go into withdrawal without it. Some people may feel angry, sad, or weak when they first quit smoking, and have trouble sleeping or getting out of bed.But quitting smoking is vital to your health. Chemicals found in cigarettes include carbon monoxide, arsenic, and methane, chemicals that are harmful to your body. Smoking can damage your lungs and heart and secondhand smoke can be deadly to anyone who lives in your house.

1. Prepare yourself for the process of ending tobacco use. Choose a date on the calendar when you will begin your non-smoking program, and stick to it. Make sure it is a date when you won't have any major projects or stressful events in your life, since quitting tobacco can often make you feel stressed out or on edge. There are different levels of commitment to and readiness for quitting tobacco. You may want to take WebMD's online "Are You Ready To Quit" test (see Resources below), which can help you assess your preparations for quitting and suggest things to be thinking about as you being the process.


2. Talk to your doctor about quitting tobacco, and ask if she has any suggestions. Your doctor may prescribe medication to help you with withdrawal symptoms, such as Zyban, a medication that releases dopamine in the brain to help you feel better. Your doctor may also be able to help you choose a different kind of medical aid, such as a nicotine patch, a nicotine nasal spray, a nicotine inhaler or nicotine gum. Ask your doctor which one of these aids she would recommend, then obtain the aid and use it when you have an intense nicotine craving.


3. Remove all outside influences that might encourage you to start smoking again. Tell friends and family members that they may not smoke in or around your house, and request that they refrain from smoking around you at all whenever they can. Most people find that their friends and family members are incredibly cooperative and helpful in this regard. Also try to avoid parties or events where many people may be smoking, as well as smoking areas in airports or restaurants. If you often smoke as part of a routine (when you have an afternoon break at work, or right after you get home, or before dinner), try to break up that routine. Substitute a long walk or a phone call to a friend for your regular tobacco break.


4. Find a support program in your area that can help you stop using tobacco along with other would-be quitters. 5. Don't ever have another cigarette or piece of chew. Some people think, "Oh, if I just have one cigarette, it'll make this craving go away. Then I can really quit for good." If you quit, you must quit completely, or else you may remain dependent on nicotine.However, if you do fall off the wagon, don't despair. May people try multiple times to quit before finally kicking the habit for real. If you fall back into your smoking habits, just begin once more at Step 1 and try again. It may take a couple of attempts, but you can quit smoking if you work hard at it.

Management Styles Of Skilled Nursing Homes Vs Hospice Care

Hospice and skilled nursing care fill different medical roles.


Two of the specialty areas within the health-care field are skilled nursing homes and hospice care. A skilled nursing home provides a residence for ill or recovering people who cannot care for themselves. Hospice care provides support and care for people with a limited life expectancy; the goal is to enable them to live as fully and comfortable as possible in their remaining days.


History


Skilled nursing homes have become a common form of care for elderly and incapacitated people, with approximately 6 percent of older adults living in such facilities. Prior to the 19th century, the nation's elderly typically were cared for by family members in homes. Later, alms houses took care of a community's aged and incapacitated residents, and these evolved into the skilled nursing homes of today.


Hospice care developed in the last half of the 20th century with the focus of providing specialized care for dying patients. The concept behind hospice was that terminal patients and their families could benefit from more focused symptom control and specialized end-of-life care.


Focus


A skilled nursing home provides 24-hour medical care, including nursing services, wound treatments, assistance with activities of daily living, meals, medication management as well as physical, occupational and rehabilitative therapy following an accident or illness. The facility is not a hospital, and in most cases, not equipped to provide intensive medical treatment.


Hospice care typically is provided at a patient's place of residence. Hospice consists of a team of providers, who manage the physical, medical and spiritual needs of a person at the end of life, and provide support for the family as well. Pain management, medication administration and personal care are provided as needed.


Staff


At a skilled nursing home, all patient care is under the supervision of a medical doctor, called a medical director. Direct patient care is provided by registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, medication assistants, nursing assistants, dietitians and therapists. Also on site are janitorial staff, housekeeping staff and kitchen staff. Patient care is provided 24 hours a day.


Hospice care is also under the care of a physician; the team also includes registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and nursing assistants. While the doctor and nurse are on-call 24 hours a day, they are not actually present with the patient all the time. The majority of hospice patients rely upon family members to assist with their care, including activities of daily living and personal care. Chaplain services are available if desired by the patient and family.


Availability


Skilled nursing homes are available in most communities in America. When deciding upon a skilled nursing home, it is best to visit more than one, then weigh the strengths and weaknesses. All must be certified and inspected by the state to ensure proper levels of care. Some facilities specialize according to needs, such as providing Alzheimer's units or specialized wound care.


Hospice care organizations are increasing in America. They usually are centered around hospitals or cancer care units. Sometimes the staff also travels to rural areas to provide patient care. Someone is available on-call 24-hours a day.


Your physician can help you decide whether to pick a skilled nursing home or hospice. It is also possible to receive hospice care while residing in a skilled nursing home, when a terminal illness has been diagnosed.

Snails have been used for food since the prehistoric period but heliciculture, the raising and harvesting of snails, hasn’t yet caught on it the United Sates. U.S. snail exports average $231,000 a year, while fresh beef pushes $1.1 billion. If you’re a snail aficionado who has struggled to find fresh snails for your celebration of National Escargot Day, on May 24, here’s harvest your own snails right at home.


Instructions


1. Find your snails. You can eat the snails you find right in your garden. Unlike mushrooms, it is possible to eat the snails you find out in the wild, without worrying about being poisoned. The easiest time to find these slimy creatures is after a rain or watering when the plants are still damp.








2. Pick the snails. Pull the snails from their place on a leaf or in the mud, by gently squeezing the middle of their shell. Be gentle and handle the snails carefully.


3. Contain your live snails. Place your snails into a container. A box, basket or sack work best, but remember that snails can slither out of just about everything, so you’ll need to have a lid that doesn’t seal out the oxygen.


4. Sell your snails. If you are going to sell your snails at a farmer’s market, you should sell them as they are. Fresh snails should not have been cleaned or processed before being sold in the market.


5. Keep your snails for yourself. If you want to keep the snails for personal use, you’ll need to store them. Snails must be kept healthy and alive until you are ready to cook them, so you need to store them in containers filled with sawdust or corn husks.








6. Store your snails. Cover the bottom of your storage container with a 1/2 inch of sawdust or corn husks. Carefully pour in a thin layer of snails and then cover them with another 1/2 inch of sawdust. Repeat until the box is filled, making sure that the last layer is sawdust. Do not put more that 15 pounds in one box or you’ll kill the snails on the bottom.


7. Eat your snails. Now you are free to clean, prepare and cook your snails as you please. If you do not know clean and prepare snails, be sure to learn before performing this step.

The fanciest wheelchairs cost more than some automobiles, but competition has brought down the cost of basic manual models. It's an intensely personal choice, with many features to think about.


Instructions


1. Seek a physical therapist or nurse's advice on special features that would enhance your quality of life.








2. Check your insurance coverage. Medicare covers electric wheelchairs nowadays, but don't assume any insurer does. Factor in what you can spend out of your own pocket and decide what your budget is. Keep in mind that popular powered models go from $5,000 to nearly $30,000.


3. Determine how you will control a motorized chair. For example, if you have C-7 tetraplegia, you may use a joystick as the input device, but the top of the joystick may need to be modified to accommodate for your lack of grip.


4. Decide what kind of back height and support you require. Criteria include head control, trunk control, upper extremity function and propulsion, as well as personal preference. Therapists generally recommend that people with little or no upper body strength need a chair that tilts back 45 degrees to avoid bedsores. 10. If you'll only need help getting around or are fatigued easily, give a scooter, or personal mobility vehicle, a test-drive. Three- and four-wheel models are available depending on mobility requirements and terrain.


11. Look into a custom-made chair. Some models have a dozen different seat widths and even more colors.

Mosquito Repellent Diet

For their small size, mosquitoes pack a mean bite.


No one likes mosquitoes, but unfortunately these pesky insects love us. One of the things that attracts them the most is our smell. Many scents attract insects, including perfumes, deodorants, hair gels and even laundry detergents and soaps. When we eat certain foods, the smell that is emitted through our skin is enticing to mosquitoes, even if you can smell nothing yourself. These critters have a keen sense of smell, so as true as it is that eating certain foods will attract them, eating other foods will repel them.


B1 Vitamins








Though the theory is controversial, some people claim that when they take vitamin B1, mosquitoes do not bite them. It is shown that B1 emits an odor through the skin, but just how effective it is at actually deterring them from biting you has not been put to a thorough scientific evaluation. However, like anything, something that works for one person may not for another. Therefore, test it out. If it works for you, fantastic. If not, you may end up with a little extra B vitamin in your system and maybe a few mosquito bites.


Brewer's Yeast


Though not technically a yeast, brewer's yeast is actually a one-celled plant that is a kind of fungus known as Accharomyces cerevisiae. When dried and ground up, it can be used to brew beer and is also taken as a nutritional supplement. Brewer's yeast is a superfood and contains all the essential amino acids, 14 minerals and 17 vitamins and is one of the best natural sources for the B-complex vitamins thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, B6, biotin and folic acid. Since B1 has been shown to have mosquito-repelling attributes, it is no wonder that many people find that by eating brewers yeast, mosquitoes are repelled in the same way. Taking it to keep mosquitoes away may or may not work for you, but you are sure to be healthier for trying.


Lemon








Lemon contains citric acid which, when emitted through the skin, has been said to repel mosquitoes, so drinking a good shot of lemon juice may help you defend against mosquitoes. It is also effective to use lemon oil on the outside of the skin, especially on the wrists, ankles and neck, to repel mosquitoes.


Garlic


Garlic is one of the most popular of the alternative methods for discouraging mosquitoes. When you eat garlic, the smell is released via the pores in your skin. Even humans can detect this strong scent, so animals definitely can. It is also recommended to try squeezing a fresh garlic clove and rubbing it on your wrists and behind your ears for added benefit. Even if it doesn't work to keep mosquitoes at bay, garlic has a host of other health benefits, so you can't go wrong with trying it.


Considerations


Many of the toxic chemicals found in bug sprays, especially DEET, may be worse for you than getting a mosquito bite. Natural remedies act to boost your immune system, and that may be the most effective thing about them. A healthy body is better able to fight off disease and harmful encounters like mosquito bites. So pumping your body full of garlic, lemon or B vitamins is probably a better alternative to spraying yourself with toxic chemicals.

Maca is a South American herb brewed in teas to reduce stress.


Civilizations have long turned to herbal remedies to treat sexual difficulties, from infertility to erectile dysfunction. Maca is one such herb used in Peru and Bolivia. Used in teas and extracts to promote sexual health, reduce stress and fight fatigue, the root may be difficult to find in its pure form because it grows abroad. You can grow your own maca with proper preparation and control.


Instructions


1. Clean a plot of land that receives full sunlight for eight hours per day. Remove all stones and pull all weeds.


2. Till the soil to a depth of 8 inches to cut up weed roots and freshen the soil. As you till, mix in one part manure or compost per four parts regular soil to improve drainage and add extra nutrients to the soil.


3. Fill a broadcast seeder with maca seeds. Distribute the seeds across the area so that they are spaced 4 to 6 inches apart; plant in early fall so that the seeds are established before winter. The seeds should be covered with no more than ¼ inch of soil so that the sun and water can reach the young plants.


4. Water the ground thoroughly immediately after planting. Use a watering can or mister to water, as strong jets from a hose could wash seeds away. Water until the soil is thoroughly soaked to encourage germination. The time needed for germination will vary by temperature.


5. Water the seeds as necessary whenever the top 1 ½ to 2 inches of soil become dry. Avoid overwatering, as this can cause root damage.


6. Apply a 2- to 3-inch layer of organic mulch over the area to retain moisture and add nutrients to the soil. Mulch will also help to prevent weed growth.


7. Refresh the soil with a new layer of compost or manure after six months of growth to encourage further growth.


8. Remove any weeds as soon as you see them by digging or cutting them down. The weeds will compete with the maca for nutrients and water. Under the right conditions, maca will be ready for harvest after eight to 10 months.

Light Therapy & Other Cures For Lichen Planus

Lichen planus is an inflammatory condition typically involving the skin and characterized by severely itchy purple, polygonal, flat-topped, raised lesions that often join together to form rough scaly patches. Lichen planus also can affect your mouth, genital region, nails and scalp. Middle-aged most commonly have this condition. Although the cause of lichen planus is unknown, scientists believe it is related to overactivation of the immune system. Lichen planus may be linked to medication use and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. In most individuals, lichen planus spontaneously resolves after one year.


Causes


In most cases, there is no identifiable cause of lichen planus. However, drug-induced lichen planus is a possibility. The most common causes of drug-induced lichen planus include gold, thiazide diuretics, penicillamine, beta-blockers, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors. Lichenoid lesions develop within a few months of beginning a medication, and lesions typically resolve after you stop taking the medication. Individuals with HCV appear to have an increased risk of developing lichen planus, with the hypothesis that long-term HCV infection triggers an immunologic response and subsequent development of lesions.


Treatment


Only a physician can diagnose lichen planus. Treatment requires a prescription, and is individualized based on the severity of symptoms and lesion involvement.








Topical Therapy


For localized lichen planus on the skin, topical corticosteroids such as clobetasol, halobetasol, betamethasone, and diflorasone are recommended. Apply a thin layer of cream to the involved areas twice daily for two to three weeks. For lichen planus in the mouth, your doctor may prescribe a topical corticosteroid such as fluocinonide. Apply the ointment to your mouth six times per day, reducing the frequency of application as lesions improve. Your doctor then will assess your response to the therapy (whether lesions are resolving), and will decide whether to continue topical treatment or to proceed with alternate options. There are few side effects associated with topical treatments, but individuals may find the frequency of application cumbersome.


Oral Therapy


For generalized lichen planus of the skin, systemic corticosteroids are the most common treatment. Dose and duration of therapy vary based on the individual. The recommended dose of prednisone is 30 mg to 60 mg taken orally once daily for six weeks. Your doctor will reduce the dose over the next four to six weeks. Although systemic corticosteroids alleviate most symptoms of lichen planus, your doctor should monitor for effects on blood pressure, blood glucose and bone density. Other oral options include acitretin--the recommended dose is 30 mg taken once daily for eight weeks. Like systemic corticosteroids, acitretin has possible side effects, including problems with the liver and increased triglycerides, and you'll need frequent monitoring.


Phototherapy (Light Therapy)


Individuals with lichen planus that is resistant to topical or oral corticosteroids may undergo psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA) phototherapy. A phototherapy center administers the treatment three times per week, typically for approximately eight weeks, but duration depends on response. Note: PUVA phototherapy can increase your risk for skin cancer.

Grow Epimedium

As a native of China, the Epimedium plant is somewhat new to perennial gardens of the United States. It is a family of many variations, from low, creeping varieties to upright bushes with bright flowers to dainty little white flowers. Most of the leaves are heart shaped and vary in color from green to bronze and the flowers hang as pendulums from upright stems. It is also known as Horny Goat Weed, Bishop's Hat and Barrenwort.


Instructions


1. Prepare the soil in your perennial garden bed by digging down about 6 inches. Remove any rocks and work in a good shovelful of leaf compost or peat moss, more if you have sandy soil. If you are planting under a tree, build up the soil on the top of the roots if they are exposed.


2. Plant Epimedium in the early spring, but after the danger of frost, in a shady area of your perennial garden. It can tolerate partial shade, but will not grow in direct sun. When you order the plants from a nursery, they should be small but well rooted. Remove the plant from the pot and loosen the soil slightly before placing it in a hole in the prepared area.


3. Pack the soil lightly around the plant and apply a layer of composted leaf mulch. The Epimedium likes a rather acidic soil and thrives under a layer of mulch as would be found on a forest floor. Water the plant gently, but thoroughly, after planting. This is a hardy plant and, once established, it should need very little care.


4. Shelter the Epimedium plant from too much wind. It is a tender plant until it gets established. Keep weeds at bay and trim off dead leaves and flowers as necessary. It will grow into a clump over time and can be divided with a sharp spade into new plants.

Causes


Kidneys are basically a body's filtering system. The most common antibiotics used to treat kidney infections are Amoxil, Cipro, Noroxin, Bactrim and Septra. You will usually see the infection begin to clear within the first week of treatment, but finish the complete dose. Otherwise, the infection may not be completely eradicated. If there is an abnormality in the urinary tract, surgery may be required.


Risks








It's mandatory to seek medical attention at the first signs of a kidney infection. Infections that are untreated can lead to life-threatening conditions such as septicemia, as well as damaging your kidneys permanently. Since your kidneys are a filtering system for your body, the bacteria can spread throughout other regions through your bloodstream. Older adults and young children can suffer the most damage from an untreated kidney infection. Often this is because the infection was misinterpreted as another illness.

Purpose

Give Yourself A Neck Massage

Instructions


1. Loosen up your neck before you give yourself a neck massage, slowly stretching it forward, backward and side-to-side.


2. Pour some massage oil into your hands and rub the oil between them to warm it (though you can give yourself a neck massage without it).


3. Flatten your right hand and mold it to the back of your neck. Your fingers should be facing toward your left side and wrapped around that side of your neck. Gently but firmly pull your hand to the right, down toward your chest, using your palm and fingers to apply pressure to the neck as you go. Then do the same with your left hand. Alternate each hand repeatedly in the same sweeping motion several times.


4. Make fists and use the fleshy side of them to gently but firmly pummel your neck. Start at the bottom where your neck meets your shoulders and work your way up toward the base of your head. Retrace your steps back down your neck. Repeat several times.


5. Place the tips of your right index, middle and ring fingers on the right side of your neck, at its base where it meets the shoulders. Use your fingertips to make small circular motions, working your way up the neck as you go. Retrace your steps back down. Repeat three times. Then do the same with your left fingers on the left side of your neck.








6. Place both your right and left index, middle and ring fingers on your neck, at its base where it meets your shoulders. In one slow sweeping motion, slide your fingertips up the length of your neck and back down again. Repeat several times.


7. Repeat Step Three, using your palms and fingers to make sweeping motions across your neck.


8. Repeat Step One, giving your neck a gentle stretch to end the massage.

Facts Kitchen Sponges

Millions of germs live in household kitchen sponges.


Sponges remove dirt and built up grime from kitchen surfaces. Anytime there is a spill, food or liquid, a sponge will remove it right away. Reusable sponges are cost-efficient and convenient. Occasionally, however, you find yourself throwing them out due to their filth or the smell they begin to produce.


Bacterial Growth


Out of all the surfaces in a household, the kitchen is the dirtiest. This is due to the transferring of bacteria across the surfaces by dirty sponges. Though the sponge is for cleaning, it actually spreads more bacteria than it cleans up. This increases the exposure of germs to countertops, stoves and anything that encounters the sponge during the normal cleaning process. Even areas that are not normally subject to such bacteria have a higher risk of being contaminated.








Cross Contamination


Sponges are only effective if dampened before use, and germs and bacteria grow in the moisture they retain. This is unavoidable due to the amount of time that drying a sponge can take. If not properly dried after each used, three days of using a sponge is enough time to produce millions of bacteria. This bacteria is easily spread through the water needed in order to efficiently clean the surfaces of the home each time it is used.








Food Poisoning


Most commonly, E. coli, staph and salmonella occur in household sponges. Salmonella is present in 1,800 different strands, and most of the strands will cause food poisoning if it encounters food intended for ingestion. Almost 80 million Americans experience food poisoning yearly due to these bacterias. Many of these cases have symptoms that disappear over a few days, but quite a few have been fatal. Touching food after using a sponge is enough to cause contamination and subsequent sickness.


Sanitation


There are only certain methods that completely sanitize sponges. The most effective methods involve soaking them in antibacterial soap and lemon juice, and thoroughly washing the sponge out. They must then heat in the microwave for one to two minutes while remaining wet, otherwise they will start a fire. Only sponges without metal pieces on the scrubber can go in the microwave as well. If preferred, they can sanitize on the stovetop by boiling them or in the dishwasher. These methods kill 99.9 perfect of bacteria within the sponge. Use caution when trying these methods, as some sponges contain ingredients that can be toxic once heated and inhaled.


Prevention


Sponges need sanitation at least once per week or thrown out on a regular basis. To decide when your sponge needs replacement, check the appearance of them. If they contain shredding or discoloration, it is safe to assume it is time to replace them. Using different sponges for each task will also extend their use and limit the amount of bacterial exposure. Regardless of the sponge type, it is best to clean it in between replacements.

1. in your measuring cup add the following:


1/2 teaspoon Lemongrass essential oil, 1/4 teaspoon cedarwood essential oil, 1/4 teaspoon eucalyptus, 1/2 teaspoon lavender, 1 & 1/2 teaspoons of polysorbate 20. If you don't have polysorbate 20, just be sure to shake very well before spraying & do not get this mixture into your eyes.


2. mix the essential oils and polysorbate 20 together in your measuring cup first. once mixture is combined, then it is safe to add in 4 oz. of Witch Hazel. Your solution may be cloudy, this is normal and should clear within 24 hours.








3. Pour your skeeter skatter mixture into your 4 oz. sprayer and make sure to keep it on hand when you happen to be out and about. This is a great way to keep those mosquitoes away without all those other harmful ingredients that so many of the commercial mosquito repellents contain.

1. Identify the allergen if possible. This is not always easy to do, because the allergen is most likely a particular ingredient inside the product that caused the reaction. Avoid the product that caused the reaction, make a list of all products you have reacted to and then compare the list of ingredients to find the common one. Once you have identified the ingredient, check the ingredient list of all products before using and avoid those that contain the suspected allergen.


2. See your doctor if you are unable to identify the allergen. He can perform allergy skin testing to find out what you are allergic to.


3. Take an oral antihistamine, such as Benadryl, as soon as you have a reaction and the hives appear. The antihistamine should provide symptom relief within the first hour.








4. Apply an antihistamine topically for faster relief. If the itch or burn is unbearable, put some Benadryl cream directly on the hives for quicker results.


5. Apply cold compresses to the area of your body that is affected by the hives. The cold water reduces the swelling and provides symptom relief.


6. Wear light weight, loose fitting clothing if the hives are on your chest, back, arms, or other areas of the body that are covered by clothes. Tight fitted clothing irritates the hives and makes them itch more.

How Can Brain Cancer Be Prevented

Many times, cancer patients develop cancer because someone in their family has had cancer. Individuals who have a history of cancer are much more likely to have problems with cancer throughout their lifetime than individuals who do not have a history. Also, patients who have suffered from other types of cancer, including breast cancer or lung cancer, are at a higher risk of being diagnosed with brain cancer. However, there are several steps people can take in an attempt to prevent brain cancer.

Doctors are trained to look for specific symptoms associated with brain cancer or tumors (as well as other types of cancer). Locating a tumor in the earlier stages is essential to fighting brain cancer.


4. Avoid manufacturing and chemical plants that release vinyl chloride. When buying a house or looking for a job, research the surrounding area. Individuals who live or work around plants that release vinyl chloride into the air and water are at a higher risk for brain cancer.

Survive An Identity Crisis

Emotional Rollercoaster


Sometimes we find ourselves very distant from the life we imagined having. Sometimes life throws us devastating news and we are forced to accept impossible situations. When life alters suddenly due to death, divorce, loss of job, or illness, we can find ourselves in the middle of an identity crisis. When our expectations of self change, we may find ourselves struggling to find our way back. Read on to find out do just that.


Instructions








1. EVALUATE your current situation. Define the expectations others have of you. When you know what others demand or expect from you, it is much easier to redefine your life. Believe that it is in your power to maintain a structured existence in spite of devastation. When your sense of self seems to have vanished, reflect on old photos and letters. List past accomplishments; large or small. Remember who you were...and remind yourself that you're still that person.


2. ACCEPT your situation. Allow yourself to wallow in self-pity, but don't stay down for more than 24hrs. Decide to be strong and you will find strength. Believe in God, and he'll hold your hand.


3. PLAN to make your situation bearable. Whatever it is, whether illness, death, or divorce, you must plan to make things as positive as possible. Give yourself permission to enjoy a favorite activity or food once a week. Pat yourself on the back for any display of courage. If you are unhappy with your job or residence, take appropriate steps to change this. Most of the time, creating a plan is the hardest step. Once implemented, you will provide yourself with structure.


4. IMPLEMENT your plan(s) for the future. Surround yourself with supportive and positive people. We are social creatures and are directly affected by the moods of others. To self-help there are a few things you can do to beat insecurity, fear, and anxiety:


Send yourself an email every evening, offering support as you would to a "friend" and don't check until morning. You can send yourself a boost with any one or more of these messages:


Everything will be okay.


Just Believe.


Life is Good.


You are Valuable.


You matter to others.


Another way to boost yourself is to write messages in your calendar or planner. Use fun stickers and bright colors. Remind yourself to manage debt, and stay on top of deadlines.


Take one day at a time, and courageously find your way back. You can do it!

What Kind Of Pain To Expect After Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure used to relieve patients from pain associated with heavy breasts. This is accomplished by removing excess fat, glandular tissue and skin to create a size and shape that most appropriately fits the patient's body. While the pain following surgery may be challenging for the patient, often times the short-lived pain outweighs the long-term pain in the back, neck and shoulders that is often associated with large, heavy breasts.


Muscle Pain


During the first few days following surgery, it is very common for patients to experience pain associated with muscle contraction. This is particularly prevalent with muscle contractions in the torso, such as coughing, sneezing or laughing. Surgeons will commonly prescribe prescription medications to soothe the patient during the recovery process.


Bruising


Some bruising and swelling is also to be expected during the first few weeks following surgery. This typically subside rather quickly and is not consistent throughout the recovery period. It is also commonly alleviated with pain medications or anti-inflammatory medications. Furthermore, some surgeons may recommend taking arnica, which is an herbal medication known to reduce prevalence or bruising.


Menstrual Period Pain


The first menstrual period following the breast reduction procedure is often painful for the patient. The pain is associated with the tenderness and swelling that occurs in the breasts during regular menstrual cycles and is further exacerbated by post-surgery swelling and pain. Some women, however, have noted pain associated with menstrual periods for the first few months following surgery. As a general rule, however, breast pain during menstrual cycles will return to the level experienced prior to breast reduction surgery relatively quickly.


Dry Skin


Around the incision area, it is common to experience itchiness and irritation related to dry skin. Non-fragrant lotions can be used around the incision area as long as you are careful not to apply the lotions directly to the open incisions. Doing so can lead to infection or additional scarring throughout the healing process.


Long-Term Pain


Ultimately, the pain associated with the surgery will subside, typically within a few months following surgery, and the long-term benefits of having breast reduction surgery begin to become evident. Tools For Cognition & Emotion







Cognition and emotion are constantly interacting.








Cognition refers to a person's thought process and how they think about their thoughts, also known as metacognition. Additionally, cognition can include memory and attention. Emotion describes feeling states. Emotional status is complicated by the fact that individuals don't always know what they are feeling. Confusing the matter even further is the issue of how cognition and emotion intersect. When a person's cognition becomes compromised, it can influence emotional modulation.


Cognitive Exercises --- Attention


The ability to pay attention to the world is an important aspect of cognition. Without selective attention it would be difficult to know what to pay attention to in any given moment. Dean Delis and Edith Kaplan created a popluar series of neuropsychological tests called the Delis-Kaplan Executive Functioning System that contains measures of general attention. Using their system as a model, one way to practice visual attention, scanning and shifting is to use complex mazes and connect-the-dot games. Practice by used timed trials as a way to mesaure progress; as time decreases visual attention increases.


Cognitive Exercises: Memory


Working memory is another bedrock of cognition because it allows for the holding of information in the brain long enough to process it properly. By expanding working memory capacity, cognition as a whole is strengthened. Taking another cue from the tests included in the Delis-Kaplan Executive Functioning System, use playing cards to create a working memory exercise. Randomly arrange four cards in a row face up and look at them for 5 seconds. Turn the cards over and try to recall number and suit. Increase the number of cards each time. For an advanced exercise recall the cards in reverse order.


Emotional Exercises: Feelings


One of the most difficult issues in terms of emotion is the ability to have insight into feelings. Having a certain feeling and knowing where it came from are two different things. Journal writing can help an individual gain insight into their emotional state because it forces self-reflection about the events of a day. In 2006 researchers at Ball State University in Indiana conducted a meta analysis, or review of a larger group of studies, looking at the benefits of journal writing. Their results, which were published in the "Journal of Athletic Training" suggest that writing in a journal increases expression of emotion, critical thinking and self-reflection.


Emotional Exercises: Thoughts


Another technique that can enhance emotion lies in using journal writing to connect thoughts and feelings. First described by psychologist Aaron Beck, thought journals allow for the understanding of automatic thoughts and underlying feelings that may otherwise stay in the subconscious. There is no standard format for keeping a journal, but the basic idea is that when an upsetting emotion or thought arises, jot it down and then walk through all of the facts and associations. Ask questions about the thought such, "How likely is this really?" "What other external factors influenced this thought?" "Is the feeling state influencing perception of thought?" Answering such question about thoughts helps with emotional modulation.
