Doctors and family members tell older people to get off the couch and walk, swim or ride a bike to keep the heart pumping, to lose weight and for added health benefits. But there are other exercise routines for older people that will benefit their health. It is important for older people to exercise, but it is equally important that they not overdo it. Stretching Exercises


Stretching exercise routines can be used as part of a warmup to more strenuous exercises. Stretching will help to keep muscles from cramping during vigorous exercise. Older people should stretch for a longer period than younger people because they are more susceptible to injury. After a brief warmup, such as walking for five minutes, begin the stretching routine. Hold each stretch for 10 seconds. Repeat each stretch three to five times. Perform a stretching exercise routine three times per week for 20 minutes each session.

Strength training helps to protect the lower back and the joints and to slow bone loss associated with osteoporosis. Begin strength training by lifting weights. Do three sets of 10 repetitions of each exercise, increasing the sets as the weights begin to feel lighter. The routine should be performed at least two days per week with a day of rest between workouts.


Aerobic Exercises


Aerobic exercise routines for older people involve sustaining a cardiovascular activity for at least 20 minutes. Begin gradually, starting with a few minutes of walking, jogging, biking or other endurance activity, with a goal of exercising 20 minutes per day nearly every day of the week. Household Products For Bug Bites

Mosquitoes are a common source of bug bites


Bug bites generally result in redness, swelling and itching in a localized place on the skin. Although you can decrease the likeliness of getting bitten with bug spray and candles that repel insects, you can't totally avoid getting bitten, particularly during the summer months when insects are out in force. Before you purchase one of the numerous pharmaceutical remedies for bug bites, try some simple household products to treat the basic symptoms of bug bites.








Cleaning the Bug Bite


The first step to reduce the potential effects of a bug bite is a thorough cleaning. Use a mild soap and hot water -- rub the soap directly on the bite. Mosquito bites itch because the insect's saliva is injected into the wound; washing it out immediately may help flush out some of the saliva. Washing out fresh bug bites also helps get rid of bacteria and germs, which in turn will help reduce future redness and swelling.


Ice and Cold Water


After washing out the bug bite, apply a cold compress directly to the bite to reduce redness and swelling. Wrap ice cubes in a washcloth or towel to create a quick cold compress at home if you don't have one handy. If you're dealing with numerous bug bites, consider soaking in a cold bath or taking a cool shower. Add a few drops of an essential oil like lavender to a bath to help reduce symptoms.


Quick Topical Remedies


Most remedies for bug bites are topical, meaning they are applied directly to the skin. A number of household products can be placed directly on the bug bite without any sort of preparation, including toothpaste, strong tea (liquid or tea bags), rubbing alcohol, vinegar, mouthwash, soap, honey, underarm deodorant, bleach, ammonia and bar soap. Essential oils can also help combat the symptoms of bug bites. The best ones for this purpose are tea tree oil, lavender oil, witch hazel and cedar oil. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic condition in which the large intestine is inflamed and ulcerated. It rarely affects the small intestine. Vegetables

Fruits


Fruit is good as long as it is not acidic. However, do not consume fruit on an empty stomach.


Fats and Oils

Fiber


Consume a high-fiber diet, including oat bran, brown rice, lentils and other whole grains. Be sure they are well cooked.


Beverages

Do you ever find yourself having one too many cocktails at the sports bar? Are you likely to overindulge from the beer cooler during your neighborhood block party? Many of us drink a little more often or in higher quantities than we know we should. We need to learn to decrease our consumption--especially given the link between chronic overconsumption and such ills as gastritis, heart disease, brain damage and various cancers. Reducing consumption can be accomplished by strategies that help social drinkers lower their intake of beer, wine and mixed drinks.


Instructions


1. Sit at a table away from the bar when you go out for the night. If you are at a party, the same applies. You need to physically separate yourself from the area where drinks are obviously available. Stake out your place early and keep busy socializing.


2. Order food and a non-alcoholic drink to start the night. You are likely to decrease your alcohol intake if you have a full stomach and have begun the evening without drinking. Be especially careful not to have an alcoholic beverage before you leave the house, as this may start you on a pattern for the night.


3. Take a friend with you to parties to ease nerves and help you stay away from refills. Many people are more likely to drink in excess at social events where they feel ill at ease. Remember, the alcohol may relieve your anxiety, but you are likely to suffer greater consequences, such as embarrassing yourself and others if you drink heavily.


4. Pour half your canned or bottled beer into a glass and nurse it. Don't let wait staff pressure you into buying more. Tell friends ahead of time how much you plan to drink so they won't encourage you to "take another shot" or "have another beer."








5. Schedule for yourself occasional weekend events that don't include alcohol. Determine a certain number of days in each month in which you will not engage in any drinking, and stick to the plan.


6. Keep a record of each date you drink and how much you drink during that time. When a person "sees" how much he is consuming, it provides an effective motivation for reducing alcohol intake.


7. Suggest games and activities to distract you from the alcohol during social occasions. Keeping your mind and hands active will help you stay away from the cocktails. Bring along board or video games, if your host approves. You can also play old standbys, such as charades or "I Spy."

Chemical Makeup








pH affects chemistry. For example, when canning, be certain to follow the specific proportions needed. If your canning recipe calls for 2 tbsp. of lime juice for each quart of tomatoes, use exactly 2 tbsp.


Other Uses


Besides use in food preparation, lime juice is used as a water supplement for livestock to encourage drinking and as a cleaning agent ingredient in detergents and surface cleaners. The pH is not often identified in these applications, but the acidic nature of lime juice makes these uses effective.

Avoid Acid Wear On Teeth

Acid wear is caused by stomach acid and certain foods you eat. The acid temporarily softens the enamel of the tooth, and while this is occurring, damage to the enamel may occur. This can cause increased sensitivity, a change in color, transparency around the edges and even small indentations on the surface of the tooth. Reversing this damage isn't possible, so it's best to avoid it to begin with.


Instructions


1. Get help if you're bulimic. Stomach acid can have very damaging effects on the teeth, so getting the help you need for your eating disorder is imperative.


2. Learn what foods can cause acid wear. Fruits and their associated juices (lemons are the worst), wine, salad dressing, caffeinated drinks and soft drinks are the typical offenders. Avoid holding these foods in your mouth for long periods of time, and don't swish an acidic drink around in your mouth.


3. Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water keeps saliva production at proper levels; saliva effectively neutralizes acid left over in the mouth after eating.


4. Eat cheese or another dairy product after consuming something acidic. This also helps neutralize the acid and helps restore calcium to the teeth as well.


5. See your dentist on a regular basis. Dentists typically recommend prophylaxis (teeth cleaning) at 6-month intervals.

Test For Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Everyone feels run down at some point, but a bit of rest is usually enough to recover previous energy levels. People suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome, however, can't seem to recuperate from that fatigued feeling. More frustrating is the fact that there's no simple test to diagnose the disease and no clear cause for its onset. They must work with their doctor to find the underlying cause of their exhaustion.


Instructions


1. Determine the onset of the fatigue. To diagnose the exhaustion as chronic fatigue syndrome, it must have lasted consistently for at least six months with no relief from bed rest.








2. Consider the severity. Chronic fatigue syndrome is beyond a little bit of tiredness. The fatigue must be severe enough to restrict your normal activity by at least 50 percent. Another way to consider this is to determine if you become severely fatigued with less than half the energy put forth as before the illness. If you normally were exhausted after an hour of walking and are now severely fatigued after only 20 minutes or so, you may have chronic fatigue syndrome.








3. Rule out any other causes. There's no definitive test for chronic fatigue syndrome, so your doctor needs to exclude all other possible causes for fatigue, before coming to a chronic fatigue syndrome diagnosis. These cause include, but aren't limited to, infections, autoimmune disorders, hypothyroidism or other endocrine diseases, illnesses such as heart, kidney, or liver disease and drug dependency or interactions.


4. Get a blood test. Though there are no definitive tests for chronic fatigue syndrome, there's suspicion that it may be associated with the Epstein-Barr virus or human herpes virus-6 (HHV-6). While a positive blood test for either of these two viruses doesn't necessarily diagnose chronic fatigue syndrome, the results along with other symptoms and factors may lead to a diagnosis.


5. Have patience and insistence. Though the continuous exhaustion is frustrating and hampers your everyday life, the process of diagnosing chronic fatigue syndrome is an involved one.

Test For Brain Cancer

Brain cancer can be caused by scar tissue in the brain that developed as the result of a stroke or other trauma. When more neurons are being developed because of the scar, a single cell can divide at an uncontrolled rate. (See References 1) This damaged cell can spread to create a tumor in one's brain. Symptoms of brain cancer vary depending on where the tumor is located, but any signs of weakening functions or sudden change in mood should be looked at by a doctor.








Instructions


1. Go to a doctor at the first sign of swelling in your head, decline in cognitive ability, or severe headaches. Also, you should see a doctor after any type of head trauma that could lead to a tumor. The doctor will give you a neurological examination to check the nerves that control your eyes and face. (See References 1) The tests will also check your coordination and memory.


2. If your doctor suspects you may have a tumor after the neurological examination, he may send you to have a CAT scan, which is a radiological test to find a tumor. Before the scan you may be injected with a dye to enhance the contrast of the X-rays taken during the scan. If you have a large tumor it will most likely be found, but if a smaller one may exist you'll be sent for more testing.


3. Have a magnetic resonance image (MRI) scan performed. This is another test that maps an image of your brain. This test doesn't use radiation, but is necessary if a tumor is suspected. Even if a large tumor was found in the CAT scan an MRI will be performed as well.








4. Let a biopsy be performed, where a sample of brain tissue is taken. This is typically a last resort, but the only way for doctors to be sure of a tumor in some cases. For a biopsy, a needle is placed into the suspected tumor to retrieve the sample.


5. Have other tests performed to see if the tumor may have originated elsewhere, such as in your spine. If so, another MRI may be necessary. It is rare for brain tumors to be caused by cancer that has spread from another organ, but it is possible.

For peak nutritional value and freshness, choose vegetables that are at their peak ripeness. Once a vegetable becomes overripe, it begins to lose its healthful benefits, ultimately decaying to a mushy science experiment in the back of your refrigerator. Different vegetables have different ripeness characteristics. To learn five general rules of thumb, as well as some specifics of popular veggies, follow these tips.


Instructions


1. Check out the color of the vegetable. Fresh veggies should be brightly colored, and literally look mouth-watering. Dullness of color usually indicates old and overripe.


2. Test for limpness. On such vegetables as carrots, broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, and celery, the vegetable should stand stiff with little to no flexibility as this denotes crispness. The same goes for lettuce leaves. If they look wilted, bend, or droop, they've dried out and are definitely past their prime.








3. Look for tight tops and heads. As some vegetables age, or if they are picked later than they should be, they continue to mature. You will see such signs of over-ripeness in broccoli and cauliflower if the florets have started to open. In asparagus, the tip will start to fan out. For cabbage and Brussels sprouts, the leaves will seem loose, not tight fitting.


4. Check for moisture and firmness. The skin of a vegetable should be firm and have an almost moist, even glossy appearance to it. Your touch should not leave an indentation in the skin. The words "plump" and "firm" are often used to describe a vegetable in its prime. Squashy or dry skin means the vegetable is going downhill.


5. Look for age spots and soft spots. Discolorations on vegetables show both bruising and areas that are starting to decay. For example, broccoli will show yellowish spots, cauliflower brown spots.

Irritability is another key factor in identifying cancerous moles. Dealing with the death of a beloved family member is difficult for adults of all ages. Instructions


1. Tell the child the truth about the death. Being up-front about what has happened is the best approach, using honest dialogue in a gentle manner. Resist the urge to soften the situation by saying his grandmother has "passed on" or "passed away"; explain that she has died and is not coming back.

Your child may feel scared to let you out of his sight and prefer to be close to you, even if it's at the funeral or memorial. Explaining the procedure and the purpose of a funeral or service will make it easier for him to attend.








6. Seek out help if needed. If your child isn't dealing with the death of her family member in a healthy way, or if her behavior suddenly changes, reach out to a counselor, doctor or clergy. Also use other resources such as books, the Internet and support groups.

Motor Skills Exercises

Motor skills can be broken down into two different areas: gross and fine motor skills. An example of fine motor skills is hand to eye coordination. Picking up small objects with your hands is a fine motor skill. Examples of gross motor skills would be balancing on your feet when walking and walking itself. When these motor skills are corrupted due to fatigue or deterioration, there are exercises to strengthen them back.


Timing Is Important


Timing exercises are important when developing or strengthening motor skills. Time yourself when folding clothes or matching objects with their appropriate colors or sizes. There are timing games all around you at all times, and you just need to find them. The key is to make it physical and not just mental. For example, time yourself putting pegs in and out of a pegboard. If you are trying to strengthen one particular motor skill, like a broken hand, use slight resistance to regain proper muscle and nerve activity. Squeeze a stress ball, which is often made from rubber or foam.


Start Small


When total loss of motor skills has occurred, you will need the help of someone else to properly regain the strength and muscle awareness in the affected area. Start with small exercises. For instance, if your hand is the affected area, start with one finger at a time. Stretch each finger out, like a fan, to make sure you have proper blood flow. For someone lacking complete motor skills, twitching a finger is an amazing accomplishment and should be treated accordingly. Acquiring the proper range of motion is key, so make sure you rotate the affected area with either the help of someone else or by using your unaffected arm or hand.


Take It Slow








You will not see improvements after only one day of exercises. Take it slow and do not rush progress just for the sake of progress. By pushing yourself a little more each day, you will regain the proper motor skills necessary to live a fulfilling life.

Stages Of Oral Herpes

According to the National Institutes of Health, oral herpes, caused by HSV1 (herpes simplex virus), has five stages. Eight out of every 10 people are infected with HSV1. Tingling

Take The Bitterness Out Of Bitter Melon

There are several options for reducing bitterness in bitter melons.


Bitter melon is a member of the gourd family, and as the name implies, this tropical perennial fruit tastes very bitter. The bitter melon is a close relative of squash, watermelon and cucumber; it is sometimes referred to not as bitter melon but as "bitter gourd" or "bitter cucumber." The green oblong fruit is found and used mostly in tropical areas such as Latin America, India, Asia and parts of Africa, and can be used for food or for medicine. You have several options when trying to reduce the fruit's bitterness prior to use.


Instructions


1. Blanche the melon. Core the melon by cutting the melon in half, then removing and discarding the seeds and fibrous core. Slice the fruit and then drop into a pan of lightly salted boiling water. Boil for one minute, then remove from the boiling water and drop immediately into ice water. Do not peel the melon -- the skin is edible.








2. Add salt. Core the melon as in Step 1, then dust with salt and let stand for 10 minutes. Rinse the slices thoroughly before use.


3. Pickle the bitter melon. Boil 1 cup of white vinegar along with 2 tbsp. of sugar, 2 tsp. of salt and 1 tsp. of turmeric. Drop sliced bitter melon into the mixture and boil for two minutes, then remove, drain and cool.








4. Prepare the bitter melon in a way that takes advantage of the melon's natural bitterness by pairing it with complimentary food groups. For example, use it to balance out strong flavors such as spices, or as a coolant with rich sauces. This naturally reduces the fruit's bitterness.

The Herbalife Diet Vs The Atkins Diet

Herbalife and Atkins are popular diet plans that stress the importance of combining lean proteins with "good" carbohydrates, while avoiding "bad" carbs, cholesterol, saturated fat and trans fat. While the same in theory, the diets are drastically different in practice. Herbalife's ShapeWorks program, promoted through multilevel marketing distributorships, is a meal-replacement plan, while the new and evolved Atkins program is a four-phased nutritional approach.


Structure


Atkins begins with a restrictive induction phase that lasts about two weeks, during which you are limited to a net intake of 20 net carbs per day. You also must stay away from refined sugars, fruits and nuts. Your diet consists of lean meats, leafy greens, vegetables and healthy fats, such as olive oil. In the second phase, Atkins slowly adds carbohydrates until you find your optimal level. This process continues through phase 3. When your desired weight is reached, you start the maintenance phase.


Herbalife consists of protein shakes for breakfast and lunch, with one snack of fresh vegetables and a balanced dinner. The company also offers a variety of supplements and snack products it says supports weight loss and heart health.


Fats


The most recent edition of the Atkins plan advises eating small amounts of a variety of fats, primarily omega 3 and omega 6. Saturated fats are also allowed in small amounts, but trans fats are prohibited.


Similarly, Herbalife, stresses eating the "better" polyunsaturates and monounsaturates in moderation while staying away from saturated fats and trans fats.


Good Carbs vs Bad Carbs


Good carbs are defined as carbohydrates that are not processed foods and contain a healthy amount of fiber. Fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads, oatmeal and whole grain cereals fall into this category of carbohydrate. Bad carbohydrates, also high in empty calories, include processed foods and refined sugars, such as white bread, white rice, white pasta, soda pop, candy, most baked desserts and ice cream.


Initially, all carbohydrates are removed from your diet in the induction phase of the Atkins plan. Atkins also advises against eating bad carbs once you reach your goal weight and begin the maintenance phases. Herbalife also advises against the consumption of bad carbohydrates.


Individual Carb Intake


As you continue through the various phases of the program, Atkins places great emphasis on an individual finding his own carb level before beginning the maintenance stage. Herbalife does not distinguish between individual levels of carb intake for weight loss and maintenance.


Maintenance


The new Atkins plan works through a series of four steps to teach dieters turn a temporary diet into a healthy lifestyle change that includes exercise. With each phase of the program, participants gradually add carbs and other "goodies" to their diet, until they find their optimal intake level for good health. Although there is some individual education within various dealer websites about healthy eating, the program itself does not practice a transition to a long-term healthy eating plan.








The Herbalife maintenance program consists of replacing one meal a day with a shake rather than two. Replacing meals with protein shakes can be difficult to maintain in the long term and is generally not recommended.

Chinese iron balls, called Baoding in Chinese, are one of the three treasures of Baoding, He Bei, China. They have been used for therapy for over 300 years and are still in common use throughout China. There are many sizes of Baoding balls, both to suit hand sizes and to hit different points of the hands. There are two common types of balls. The first is a silver colored pair of balls. How they Work


Baoding balls work by toning the chi, or life force in all living things. In addition to providing physical exercise that focuses on dexterity, they press acupressure points in the hand. Basic Exercises


The basic exercise with Baoding balls involves twirling two of the balls in one hand. How Is A Kidney Transplant Done

Donors


In order to transplant a kidney from a living donor to a recipient, donors are evaluated on health and psychological grounds. The living donor must be disease-free and cannot be involved in the process in order to make a profit. In the past, the donor and the recipient needed to have the same blood type in order to be considered a match, but FDA-approved Cedars Sinai High Dose IVIG therapy can now keep the immune system from rejecting the kidney. Kidneys from deceased donors are also used. Kidneys from brain-dead donors are easier to use than kidneys that are taken after cardiac death has occurred because the kidneys are perfused at the time of harvest. After kidneys are harvested from the deceased recipient, they are placed in cold storage until they are ready to be transplanted into the recipient. If the IVIG procedure or plasmapharesis is not performed, the kidney from the donor and the recipient must be ABO blood group compatible.








The Procedure


The existing kidney of the recipient is almost never removed. Taking that kidney out of the recipient leads to a high morbidity rate. Instead, the renal artery of the donated kidney is connected to the external iliac artery and the renal vein is connected to the external iliac vein.


The renal artery is normally connected to the abdominal aorta, and the renal vein is normally connected to the inferior vena cava.


After the Operation


Typical kidney transplant surgery lasts about three hours. If the kidney that is transplanted is of high quality, it should begin to function normally by producing urine almost immediately. 2. Apply pressure. The word shiatsu comes from the Japanese words "shi," which means finger and "atsu," which means pressure. Instead of the more modern form of massage in which you use fingers and thumbs simultaneously to "squeeze" different body areas, when performing shiatsu, you will simply apply pressure to the body areas.

At the beginning of each treatment, examine several areas of the body including the stomach, back, legs and neck for any softness or hardness. Finding these areas will help you to decide which areas of the body need specific attention. Once you know which areas you are trying to alleviate, then you can start to perform shiatsu.


4. Treat specific body areas. Performing shiatsu isn’t like performing a normal body massage; there are specific areas of the body that shiatsu practitioners should target in order to improve the overall health and well-being of patients. The head, neck, back, fingers, palms, feet and toes are all access points for the major organs of the body. Practitioners can target certain areas of the body by applying pressure at these specific points. By doing this, you can influence the overall health of a patient's internal organs.








5. Find the meridians. Shiatsu is an ancient technique based on the holistic principle of qi (pronounced chi). Your qi travels through the body on energy pathways known as meridians. Shiatsu is designed to apply pressure to break apart blockages along these pathways that may be restricting the flow of qi. It is important that these meridians stay open because many believe qi is responsible for organ regulation as well as the body’s self-healing properties. Plus, it is a good source of iron and has little fat and no cholesterol. You can make seitan at home; but you can also buy it at a natural foods store. Use it as you would beef. You can buy a chicken-flavored seitan, as well. Another good source of protein is tofu.








4. Drink soy milk for extra protein. Choose one without sweetening so that you can have the benefits of soy protein without unnecessary carbs.


5. Don't forget to eat your vegetables. They have protein, too. Beans and peas have as much protein as the same amount of tofu. Broccoli and asparagus have half as much protein as the same amount of tofu.
