Food Safety Issues In The Usa

The bacteria, parasites and viruses that cause food-borne illnesses cannot be seen with the naked eye. Often, contaminated food does not look, smell or taste any different from non-contaminated food. And many pathogens spread quickly under the right conditions. These factors make food-borne illnesses difficult to control, even with the strictest of measures. The U.S. government is committed to ensuring the safety of the nation's food supplies and takes many preventative and corrective measures to minimize risk to consumers.

Statistics

According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control's Food-Related Illness and Death from Known Pathogens study, an estimated 76 million people become sick from food-borne illnesses in the United States every year. Additionally, food-borne illness accounts for about 325,000 hospitalizations and about 5,000 deaths yearly. The most common food-borne illnesses are Campylobacter, E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella.

While it is not possible to eliminate every potential threat, when food is grown, harvested, handled, inspected, refrigerated and cooked properly, risks for food-borne illness are drastically minimized.

HACCP

The Federal government recommends that U.S. restaurants and food manufacturers use the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points system, or HACCP, to provide consumers with the safest possible product.

In the HACCP system, there are seven main principles to follow:

1) Conduct a hazard analysis. This means finding any weak spots in production where food could be potentially mishandled or temperature-abused.

2) Determine critical control points. This step involves determining where to tighten controls as food is passed from one stage of production to the next.

3) Establish critical limits. This means determining the maximum or minimum temperature, cook time and shelf life required for each product to avoid contamination.

4) Establish monitoring procedures.

5) Establish corrective actions. Strategies must be in place to immediately correct missteps and problems.

6) Establish verification procedures.

7) Establish record-keeping procedures.

Food Recalls

Recalls occur when a food product is found to be contaminated or adulterated. A recall is done for the protection of the public and is a voluntary measure. In cases where a company does not choose to recall an item, the federal department responsible for the product category can request one.

FSIS

Under the authority of the Federal Meat Inspection Act and the Poultry Products Inspection Act, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service, or FSIS, inspects all raw meat, poultry and eggs for interstate and foreign commerce. Meat and poultry products are also monitored as they leave their respective plants. The plants themselves are also federally inspected.

Seafood

Seafood in the United States is not monitored by the USDA, but by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, through its 1946 Agricultural Marketing Act. The service is voluntary and includes product grading, sanitation inspection and process and product inspection.

Contacting the USDA

Due to massive recalls in the early 2000s of spinach, peanut butter and ground beef, many people have questions about food safety. The USDA has an automated response system for food safety questions, which can be found at:

fsis.usda.gov/Food_Safety_Education/Ask_Karen/index.

It also has a meat and poultry hotline at (888) 674-6854 or (800) 256-7072 (TDD/TTY).

Natural Cures For Seborrheic Dermatitis

Dandruff

Seborrheic dermatitis, also known as dandruff or cradle cap, occurs when the skin flakes. It is a form of eczema that usually affects the scalp, but can also manifest on the face, chest or creases of the arms, legs and groin. The patches often appear greasy and scaly. Fortunately, there are effective natural cures for seborrheic dermatitis.

Natural Treatments

Thyme has mild antiseptic properties that can help treat seborrheic dermatitis. Make a "shampoo" by boiling 4 tbsp. of dry thyme in 2 cups of water for 10 minutes. Strain the brew and let it cool. Once it is cool, pour half the mixture over damp, clean hair. Make sure the mixture covers the scalp. Massage the mixture in gently and do not rinse it out. Save the other half for use on another day.

Even though seborrheic dermatitis is caused by excess oil on the scalp, an occasional warm-oil treatment can help loosen and soften dandruff scales. Heat a few ounces of olive oil on the stove until it is lukewarm. Wet your hair before applying, so that the oil reaches the scalp instead of being absorbed by dry hair. Use a cotton ball or brush to apply the heated olive oil to the scalp. Put on a shower cap and wait 30 minutes before washing out the oil.

Aloe vera gel can also be used to treat dandruff. A double blind study done at New York University's Langone Medical Center showed that the use of aloe vera on seborrheic dermatitis resulted in a significant decrease in scaling, itching and the number of affected areas.

Tea tree oil can help reduce or alleviate seborrheic dermatitis in mild to moderate cases. Use a shampoo that contains 5 percent tea tree oil. Other natural treatments that have shown promise in treating seborrheic dermatitis include solanum chrysotrichum (a Mexican herb), oral folate and topical vitamin B-6, as well as the ingestion of essential fatty acids, zinc, iron and vitamins A, E, D, B-1, B-2 and C.

Shampooing Tips

Shampooing often, every day if need be, helps control dandruff and excess scalp oil. Massage in the shampoo, gently rubbing the scalp to help loosen scales and flakes. Do not scratch the scalp, as this can be too abrasive and lead to irritation and sores. Whatever shampoo you use, switch brands every few months as your scalp adapts to the ingredients. You can also shampoo your hair twice. The first time, massage and try to loosen flakes. The second application can help wash out any flakes that did not come out with the first rinse. If you use conditioner, avoid rubbing it into your scalp.

Properties Of A Ruby Gemstone

Properties of a Ruby Gemstone

Since ancient times, rubies have been considered one of the most precious gemstones. They are sought after for their beauty and vibrant red color. Ruby is a variety of the mineral conundrum, which is one of the hardest minerals on Earth.

Physical Properties

The ruby ranks a 9 out of 10 on the Mohs scale for hardness, second only to the diamond at 10. Rubies that are more than 3 carats are very rare.

Geography

Rubies are found in many locations including Nepal, Vietnam, Thailand, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kenya and Tanzania. They may vary in hue and intensity from deep, vivid red to a more pale, bluish color.

Metaphysical Properties

Ancient druids, shamans and Hindus believed in the mystical properties of the ruby and other gemstones. Many of those beliefs were passed on and still exist in modern times. The ruby is believed to promote clarity, wisdom and motivation. It is thought that carrying or wearing a ruby will protect the owner from psychic and physical attacks, and that sleeping with a ruby can induce lucid dreaming.

Healing Properties

The Romans and Greeks utilized gemstones for their healing abilities. It is believed that rubies can promote healthy blood circulation and protect from infection. Rubies are thought to cleanse the blood of toxins. The gemstone is even credited with preventing starvation.

Magical Properties

Since ancient times pagan cultures believed in the magic inherent in gemstones. Even in modern times, some practitioners of Wicca use gemstones in spells and believe that wearing a ruby can increase energies during a magical ritual. Magical properties associated with the ruby include protection, power and wealth. Rubies also are used to ward off nightmares.

Fun Fact

According to legend, Catherine of Aragon wore a ruby that turned dull and darkened in hue the day before Henry VIII announced he was divorcing her.

Tips On Drugs Abuse

Drug abuse involves the repeated use--in an excessive amount--of chemical substances to gain a certain effect. It is a health problem that impacts almost every family and community in some way. According to the National Institutes of Health, drug abuse results in around 40 million serious illnesses or injuries annually in the U.S. Drugs that are abused include cocaine, amphetamines, heroin, anabolic steroids, club drugs, inhalants, prescriptions and marijuana. Drug abuse leads to social problems such as violence, child abuse, drugged driving and stress.

Signs and Symptoms

There are physical and mental effects when someone abuses drugs. While the abuser is high, the drug impacts her entire body, from heart rate to blood pressure. Stimulants, like cocaine, make her hyped up, with higher metabolism and blood pressure and inability to sleep. Drugs like barbiturates and opiates slow these systems down, reducing breathing, blood pressure and alertness.

When trying to determine whether someone is abusing drugs, look for physical signs and symptoms such as restlessness, slow speech, confusion, sleeplessness, sudden weight loss or gain, changes in clothing, nosebleeds and coughing. Drug abuse causes changes in mood, such as cycles or cheerfulness and irritability. It also causes depression, unusual calmness, paranoia, hallucinations, temporary psychosis and delusions.

Time to Talk

According to a Partnership for a Drug Free America, kids who learn about drug abuse from their parents are up to 50 percent less likely to use drugs themselves. Parents can help their children make better decisions and live a safe life simply by talking about drugs. Drugs such as marijuana or alcohol aren't the only ones parents need to talk about. They also need to discuss the proper use of prescription medications and the safety risks in sharing them. Starting the conversation isn't easy, but it's also not as hard as many parents think. Time to Talk (see Resources section) has tools to help parents start the conversation and keep it going.

Transition

Teenagers may start abusing drugs during times of transition. This can include a move, loss of girlfriend or boyfriend, divorce or death in the family. When a child experiences a dramatic change, it's essential for parents to pay attention to their children. Ask yourself whether you're keeping the lines of communication open, allowing your teen to open up about his feelings. He needs to know that you won't judge him, just listen. Make sure you've set aside enough time for bonding. Take the teen shopping or bowling one-on-one, to show you have time for him. This will also give you the chance to pick up on behavior changes or problems. While you're together, talk about the dangers of alcohol and drugs. Even if you've said it before, it doesn't hurt to reiterate the consequences of using drugs or alcohol. Ask questions about what is happening in his life. This will help you monitor what he's doing and with whom. It's also important to see if there are any changes in his weight, eating habits or sleeping patterns. If you notice any unusual behavior, enlist the help of the child's physician.

Firm Lips With Facial Exercises

Firm Lips With Facial Exercises

If your lips have lost their fullness since your youth, you may be searching out new lip plumping lipsticks, colors that give the illusion of firm lips or even collagen injections to help reclaim those lips you used to have. However, if you create an exercise regimen for your lips, you can naturally firm them up for no cost at all.

Instructions

1. Sit with your spine aligned and your feet flat on the floor to prepare for a lip exercise session. Place your hands comfortably in your lap and breathe deeply for a minute or so to fully relax your muscles and encourage maximum blood circulation. As you breathe, consciously relax all of your facial muscles. Focus especially on releasing your jaw.

2. Open your mouth as wide as possible, stretching your lips as far as you can. Hold the stretch for a count of ten and then relax your muscles. Repeat three times.

3. Draw your tips together as tightly as you can. To get the most benefit, make sure your jaw muscles aren't assisting in this movement. Move your pursed lips upwards towards your nose and hold them at their maximum stretch as you count to five.

4. Release your lips muscles and let your lips come back together naturally. Now smile as wide as you can with your lips closed. Hold the smile as you count to five.

5. Bring your lips from the smile to a pucker, as if you're going to give someone a kiss on his cheek. Reach your lips outward, as if that cheek you want to kiss isn't quite close enough. Hold this position for five counts.

6. Relax your puckered lips back to your face and now move them upwards towards your nose. This time, allow the pucker to relax as you move your lips upwards, rather than pursing your lips as you did in Step 3.

7. Repeat Steps 2 though 6 at least three times to complete your exercise session.

Treatment Plan Using Sweet Almond Oil For Massage

Sweet almond oil is extracted from almonds and is a very popular "carrier oil" in which essential oils from plants and flowers can be added to make a massage oil. On its own, sweet almond oil is tolerated by most people and can be used neat for a basic, all-over, skin moisturizer. It is a bit too heavy to use for the face, however.

For massage, sweet almond oil can be used on its own or combined with coconut or sesame oil. According to Ayurveda, Indian medicine, sweet almond oil is soothing and "grounding."

What Is Sweet Almond Oil?

Sweet almond oil is commonly sold online and in health food stores. It is used to moisturize the skin and for massage.

Because it is derived from almonds, sweet almond oil is rich in vitamins E, A, B-1, B-2 and B-6. It can be stored at room temperature without spoiling.

Use Sweet Almond Oil for Massage

Combine half a cup of sweet almond oil with a few drops of essential oils that are designed to induce relaxation: lavender, rose, sandalwood or eucalyptus. Essential oils are extracted from plants, flowers and herbs.

After taking a hot shower or bath, pour about a tablespoon of sweet almond oil in your hands and smooth over your feet and work up towards the legs, chest and the back to the neck.

Ideally, you have another person to apply the oil in broad strokes as massage therapy. On your own, use long strokes to activate the lymphatic system, which helps carry toxins into the bloodstream to be excreted through the internal organs.

Ayurveda massage treatment

Ayurveda is a 3,000-year-old science that integrates medicine and holistic practices for overall health. According to Ayurveda, everyone can benefit from daily massage. If you don't have time for a daily treatment, try it once a week.

In the morning, before bathing, heat about 3 tablespoons of oil in a small pan. Allow it to cool before gradually slathering it onto the feet, legs, chest, back, arms and neck and even the scalp. This may take 10 minutes to do thoroughly. Allow the oil and heat to penetrate. Rinse off in a soapy shower. Some of the oil will remain on the skin to help keep the skin moisturized.

Fragrances That Decrease Appetite

Peppermint fragrances help decrease appetite and control cravings for sweets.

When it comes to losing weight, most people try to find the right diet and exercise program to burn calories. Some doctors and alternative medicine practitioners also tout the power of aromatherapy to help individuals with their weight loss goals. They believe that certain fragrances and scents decrease an individual's appetite, preventing him from overeating and triggering a loss in weight. Most weight loss aromatherapy programs rely on a standard group of fragrances that have proven to be effective in controlling appetite.

Peppermint

Peppermint is probably the best known scent to decrease appetite. It promotes a feeling of fullness, which lessens the chance that individuals will overeat, and also helps cut back on cravings for sweets. Sniffing peppermint oil 10 to 15 minutes before eating should help curb your appetite during a meal. You can also add a few drops of the oil to your water so you continue to smell it throughout the meal, increasing the chance that you eat fewer calories.

Grapefruit

Grapefruit has long been associated with weight loss, and there is a fad diet based on eating a piece of the fruit before every meal to promote more efficient fat-burning. While those claims are dubious, grapefruit is commonly used in weight control aromatherapy because its crisp, bright fragrance helps lessen cravings for sweets. Pink grapefruit essential oil is particularly helpful in lessening appetite. Grapefruit essential oil may be rubbed between your hands, so when you cup them together you can slowly inhale the scent. It is also easy to adjust the intensity of the aroma by moving your hands closer or further away from your face. For best results, sniff grapefruit oil at least five minutes before eating. It is also helps to drink a glass of water after inhaling the oil because the water increases the feeling of fullness.

Lemon

Many aromatherapists believe that the scent of lemon speeds up the metabolism and provides fuel to fat-burning cells in the body. It is also believed to affect the appetite. According to Therapeutic Reiki, a website that focuses on alternative medicine, a study was conducted on the effect of lemon aroma on the brain and evidence was gathered that it stimulates the hippocampus, the part of the brain that controls rational, left brain thought. This helps prevent emotional eating and binges by allowing individuals to realize when their appetite has been satisfied.

Fennel and Patchouli

Many aromatherapists utilize fennel and patchouli essential oils to help curb the appetite. According to the West Coast Institute of Aromatherapy, the use of fennel as a appetite suppressant may be traced back to ancient Greece. Patchouli has been used in aromatherapy for years to treat various conditions, such as anxiety or rage issues, and a noted side effect has been its ability to decrease appetite. Used in conjunction, fennel and patchouli may provide more effective appetite control benefits. Some aromatherapists recommend inhaling the scents at multiple times throughout the day instead of only before meals because it will help the effect last longer.

Still Become A Nurse With A Dui Misdemeanor

Becoming a nurse is filled with lots of work, classes and an array of techniques to be mastered. Adding a DUI Misdemeanor charge to that and the situation becomes even more difficult. While it is still possible to become a registered nurse despite a previous DUI charge, the key is to be honest an open about your history. You will be asked about any previous charges and will need to explain them.

Identification

To be accredited as a Registered Nurse, you must have a degree as an Associate Degree Nurse (ADN) or a Bachelor of Science Nurse (BSN). Gaining an ADN includes a program of two years while a BSN requires four. Both are accepted for employment, however, with a BSN you will generally be paid more. There are nursing programs featured at many colleges across the country.

Significance

A DUI charge falls under the category of a misdemeanor. This charge happens when an individual is pulled over while driving with a blood alcohol level that is over the legal limit. The person will be arrested, booked and fingerprinted at the local police station, and then given a trail before a judge. Offenders will generally be penalized with a fine and their license revoked for a period, depending upon the circumstances and the state they are convicted.

Effects

Each state's penalties for misdemeanors vary, and the ramifications for the charge will differ from state to state. Regardless of the where it happened, a DUI cannot be expunged from one's record. Individuals will want to get in touch with the state's board of nursing to find out the rules that are set out regarding this offense and applying to a nursing program.

Prevention

A DUI misdemeanor charge will not prevent an individual from being able to apply for a nursing program, however, they will need to make the charge known on the application and be upfront about it. There will be a section on the application regarding any criminal activity and any applying individual will have to put down the DUI and the year that it occurred. It will be possible to explain the current state of the charge, show any legal documentation of payment records or services completed to show the offender followed the proper legal procedures.

Considerations

Of course, any future employer will also ask about any previous criminal activity and once the degree has been earned, the offender will again need to provide that information when asked for it.

Diagnosis Of Testicular Cancer

Diagnosis of Testicular Cancer

Testicular cancer occurs inside the testicles, which are located inside the scrotal sac underneath the penis. It usually occurs in only one testicle. Testicular cancer is rare, but when it does occur, it's highly curable with the proper treatment.

Symptoms of Testicular Cancer

The symptoms of testicular cancer may include a lump in one of the testicles, pain or discomfort in a testicle or the scrotum, an ache in the stomach or groin, a heavy feeling or fluid in the scrotum, enlarged breasts, or feeling tired or unwell for no reason.

Surgery as a Treatment for Testicular Cancer

The main treatment for testicular cancer is generally surgery to remove the testicle. An incision is made in the groin to remove the entire testicle. Sometimes the surgery involves removal of lymph nodes in the groin. This may be done at the same time as the removal of the testicle, or later. An implanted, saline-filled testicle can be inserted if the patient chooses. The surgeon should take every precaution to avoid cutting any nerves in the area, as this could result in difficulty when ejaculating. Testicular surgery will not affect or prevent erections in the future.

After the surgery, CT scans are scheduled every few months to ensure the cancer hasn't returned. Blood tests are done to check for cancer. It's important that patients follow through with these checkups.

Radiation Therapy

Another treatment option for testicular cancer is radiation therapy, in which high-powered energy beams such as X-rays are used to kill cancer cells. Side effects of radiation therapy include fatigue, redness of the skin and possibly irritation in the areas around the abdomen and groin. It's possible to become infertile for a while, but as the treated area heals fertility can return.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy kills cancer cells through the use of drugs. Chemotherapy might be recommended after surgery, and before or after lymph node removal. Side effects depend on the drugs that are used and may include nausea, infertility, risk of infection, hair loss and fatigue.

If Testicular Cancer Returns

When all else fails, and if the cancer returns after treatment, the patient may be advised to undergo experimental treatments in a clinical trial such as a stem cell transplant. Drugs are administered that causes the stem cells in the patient’s bone marrow to flow into the blood. Once these cells are filtered from the blood, they are frozen for later use. The patient is then given chemotherapy to kill cancer cells and also bone marrow cells. The stored stem cells are then thawed and put back into the body to replenish the bone marrow.

Music Relaxation Techniques

While some of the more conservative individuals out there immediately associate music with rebellion, anarchy and drugs, and though some acts are, there is plenty of other music out there to be enjoyed. Some of it is quite relaxing to listen to when you are spending some free time daydreaming, thinking or meditating.

Relaxation Techniques

Music is a great relaxation technique on its own, but it is even better when paired with another relaxing activity. You'll find that your cares and stresses are gone in no time when pairing up any of the following activities with a good, relaxing soundtrack.

Just breathe. Breathing slowly in through your nose and exhaling through your mouth is a great way to calm the heart and the mind at the same time--even more so when listening to some relaxing music.

Sit or lay in a comfortable position. You don't want to be moving and wriggling around trying to get comfortable when trying to relax. Instead, make sure that you have made a comfortable spot beforehand.

Take a bath. Bathing is one of the most relaxing activities, especially when bubbles or a whirlpool tub is involved. Turn on some of your favorite relaxation music, lie back and enjoy soaking in the water.

Meditate. For those who regularly meditate, there is nothing better than relaxing music. It really can help clear the mind, ease the stress of the day and help you to relax.

Drive. For some, driving is a relaxing activity. Combine this with listening to music, and some are literally in danger of falling asleep at the wheel.

Types Of Music

Music varies from culture to culture and what exactly constitutes relaxing music varies just the same. There are some styles however, like the types of music mentioned below, that are typically agreed upon as relaxing despite one's own culture.

New age is quickly catching on as a favorite amongst those who enjoy meditation. The term new age encompasses a broad variety of musical styles. Used for stress management, relaxation, meditation and Yoga, there are plenty of applications for new age music. Enya, Tulku, Terry Oldfield and Wendy Carlos can all be classified in the new age category.

Though Celtic music is actually made up of several different and distinct genres of music within Western Europe, there are many groups who are classified as Celtic. More importantly there are many who find their music a favorite for relaxation. Manus McGuire, Old Blind Dogs, Liz Carroll and Wolfstone are some of the artists who perform Celtic music.

World music is used as a generic term to classify any music that is "non-Western." It can be anything from an African tribal drum beat to an Australian didgeridoo--anything that sets the mood for relaxation and has an original sound. Some examples of world music include Manu Chao, Rim Banna and King Sunny Ade and the African Beats.

Cure A Burning Sensation In The Stomach

A burning sensation in the stomach can indicate different digestive problems. Common problems associated with stomach burning are indigestion, acid reflux, gas and ulcers. Prescription medications help prevent and cure burning sensations in the stomach, but if the pain hits at night or over the weekend, you need to know what home remedies can help, until you see a doctor.

Instructions

1. Try and figure out why you're having the burning sensation. Think about the foods you ate during the day, the liquids you drank or whether you've missed a few meals, which can also cause burning in the stomach.

2. Take a strong over-the-counter medicine for acid reflux. Formerly, the medication Prilosec was available only by prescription. Now, Prilosec is available at any drug store or retail outlet that sells medication. This medication helps reduce the acid in your stomach, hopefully reducing the burning sensation.

3. Help cure a burning sensation caused from an ulcer by taking an antacid pill and resting. People used to drink milk for an ulcer, but recent research shows that milk increases the amount of gastric acids released. If you want to try milk to cure the burning sensation, drink it in small quantities for the best results.

4. Burp repeatedly, if the burning sensation stems from a build up of gas in your stomach. You can tell if the burning is from gas build up, if burping relieves the pain. For further relief, massage your stomach between the belly button and breastbone to help release the gas.

5. Nibble on bland foods, such as rice or crackers, if the burning sensation is because you haven't eaten a full meal for longer than 6 hours. Your stomach is working overtime to digest food that isn't there, which can cause the burning feeling. Bland foods help neutralize digestive acids.

6. Make a cup of hot thyme tea and drink it on an empty stomach. Fill a cup with boiling water and add about 1 tbsp. of dried thyme. Cover the cup and let it steep for 10 minutes. Strain out the thyme and drink the tea.

Mid Face Lift Surgery

The mid-face area helps to communicate emotions.

Traditional full face lifts do little to add a tighter, younger look to the center of the face, between the eyes and mouth, according to CosmeticSurgery.com. This region, known as the mid-face, requires its own separate procedure to correct drooping fat, skin and muscles. This relatively quick and affordable procedure appeals to people who just want to look a few years younger with resorting to a full face lift.

Purpose

A mid-face lift concentrates on tightening the area in the center of the face between the eyes and the corners of the mouth. This area contributes most of the face's range of emotional expression, and drooping mouth corners can make a person appear inappropriately sad, tired or angry, while drooping cheekbone skin adds puffiness around the eyes. Improving the skin and muscle tone in this area makes the patient look younger, healthier and happier. Some institutions such as the Mayo Clinic also refer to the procedure as a "cheek lift."

Candidates

People who would like to appear more youthful but cannot afford a full face lift may opt for a mid-face lift instead. The surgeon can complete the procedure in about an hour, appealing to time-pressed individuals who want a convenient outpatient procedure. Prospective patients who have deep folds or lines in the area between the nose and mouth, or who suffer from sagging jowls or wrinkles, can pull the skin away from the corners of the mouth slightly to see what a mid-face lift would look like.

Procedures

Surgeons shift the underlying muscle and fat as well as the facial skin to re-anchor the mid-face for a more youthful appearance. This procedure requires cutting more deeply than for an ordinary full face lift, starting either around the mouth or up near the eyelashes. The surgeon relocates the cheek and nose muscles and the fat in the cheeks, then reattaches the muscles in their new position and sews the incisions closed. In some cases, the surgeon may use a tiny camera called an endoscope to view and work underneath the skin through a tiny incision.

Recovery

Because a mid-face lift involves a smaller area than a full face lift, patients usually recover more quickly and with less pain, though bruising and swelling may take one to two weeks to subside and itching may accompany the healing process. The surgeon will usually advise the patient to avoid strenuous activity for several weeks after the procedure.

Considerations

While a mid-face lift procedure costs considerably less than a full face lift, patients may still have to pay several thousand dollars out of their own pockets, because health insurance does not cover the operation or anesthesia costs. Patients can expect five to 10 years of improved appearance, depending on factors such as health, age, the extent of the surgery, sun exposure and individual recovery powers. People considering this surgery should acquaint themselves with the procedure's benefits and limitations to develop a realistic picture of the final outcome.

Most Common Brain Tumor Symptoms

Brain tumors can cause symptoms that range from mild to severe and can become progressively worse over time. Knowing the signs and symptoms of a possible brain tumor is important information in deciding to seek medical attention and treatment. As with all medical conditions, only a physician can diagnose the presence of a brain tumor and prescribe a course of treatment that can improve your life dramatically.

Mild symptoms

Mild symptoms are those symptoms that most people overlook or attribute to other causes. They include headaches, weakness and lethargy, vomiting, inability to remain alert or concentrate, and a general feeling of illness. According to the National Institutes of Health, other odd-seeming symptoms may include uncontrollable hiccups, obesity and the absence of menstruation.

Severe symptoms

Some severe symptoms can include seizures, loss of hearing and/or sight, numbness or decreased sensitivity, and loss of balance or "clumsiness." If you or someone close to you is experiencing these symptoms, especially if they appear in combination with some of the milder or severe symptoms, then you should consult an oncologist, neurosurgeon or other specialist physician.

End-stage symptoms

End-stage symptoms usually occur when there has been extensive brain damage due to a tumor that has spread or propagated, thus taking over room inside your skull that would normally be devoted to the brain. They include rigid body spasms, also called "decerebrate posture," which is characterized by rigid legs, arms, hands and feet, and a head and neck that are pulled backward. The opposite posture is also possible, with the body curved in toward the abdomen, and is called "decorticate posture." In this case, the arms, fists, legs and head are uncontrollably curved inward.

Symptoms in infants

In some cases, infants may be born with or develop a brain tumor. Typically, because the bone plates on the top of an infant's head are not yet fused, the head may be larger in circumference or may have "bulging fontanelles" or a bulging soft spot on the top. Some tumors may grow quickly, thus causing brain damage resulting in some of the end-stage tumor symptoms described above.

Prevention/Solution

A physician may use a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine or a Computed Tomography (CT) scan to detect a brain tumor. Individual treatment varies, but may include medications such as steroids to reduce swelling, medications for headaches, and anticonvulsants. In some cases, targeted radiation treatment, chemotherapy or surgery may be used to remove large or cancerous tumors.

The Invention Of The Asthma Inhaler

Since its invention, the asthma inhaler has improved the lives of millions of asthma sufferers. The pressurized metered dose inhaler (pMDI) by 3M has been around since 1956 and according to 3M remains the most commonly prescribed device worldwide for inhaled asthma medication.

Beginnings of the Asthma Inhaler

3M says the initial concept for the inhaler came from a 13-year-old. When the daughter of Riker Laboratories' president asked why her asthma medicine couldn't be sprayed like her hairspray, the idea for the metered dose inhaler was born.

Function

The pMDI delivers asthma medication in precise doses. The medication enters the patients' lungs via inhalation.

Developments

A faster-acting metered dose inhaler was introduced in 1957, allowing for quicker relief from asthma by relaxing the muscles and opening airways. Called a bronchodilator, this MDI works with short bursts of aerosolized medication that the asthma sufferer inhales through the device.

Widespread Use

Since its inception, the bronchodilator MDI has sold by the hundreds of millions each year in at least 15 countries. Professional athletes with asthma sometimes use the device before and after a sport to avoid attacks. They are best used for short-term relief.

Evolution

The latest developments to the asthma inhaler include a switch from the CFC compound to halo carbons to deliver the aerosolized medication. This has made for potentially more potent medicine in an environmentally friendlier package.

Few things are better than a full body massage after a day of work or to release accumulated stress and tension. Massage can be performed in the home by family members or received by a massage therapist. Several massage methods are available. A full body massage can be beneficial to reduce muscle tension, ease aches and pains, relieve stress and improve circulation. On top of that, massage just feels great, and it's great for you.

Back of the Legs

The removal of clothing is best suited for full body massage to allow the strokes to flow smoothly, to access tight areas of the body and because of the use of oils or lotions.

Beginning with the legs, use long flowing strokes from the ankles to the knees several times. Use a firm, gliding motion.

Returning to the ankle, place your hands so fingers access the inner part of the lower leg. Moving your hands in opposite directions, knead the muscle of the calf, working your way up to the highest point on the back of the thigh.

Stroke lightly back down to the ankle and use long, firm, gliding strokes up the leg to the thigh once more.

Repeat massage techniques on recipient's other leg. Buttock kneading may be incorporated at any point within the legs portion of the massage if acceptable to the recipient.

The Back

Apply more oil or lotion to your hands and use the same long strokes from the top of the shoulders to the lower back. Repeat several times with a firm stroke down the back and a lighter one on the return to the shoulders.

Standing to one side of the receiver, use your forearm to stroke more deeply from the lower back up around the inside of the shoulder blade. This is a firm technique that accesses broader muscle tissue without the pain that fingertip pressure can sometimes elicit. Repeat the forearm stroke a few times. Move to the other side of the back and repeat.

Move to the shoulders again and using supported thumbs, press and slide them down either side of the spine several times. Keep contact with the receiver's body and glide your palms over the sides of the back on the return to the shoulders.

Head, Neck, Shoulders and Arms

Have the receiver turn over onto their back. Without applying more lubricant, use your fingertips to make circular motions on the scalp. Cover the entire scalp including the back of the head. Using fingertips, stroke gently across the forehead and use circular fingertip motions around the eyes, cheeks and mouth.

Apply oil to your hands and use short strokes up and down the neck on both sides. Squeeze the back neck muscles gently. Continue with more stroking down the neck and across the shoulders. Squeeze and apply thumb pressure to the tops of shoulders to release any tension there.

Continue long strokes down the receiver's arm and back up to the shoulder once more. Take time to lightly pull and rotate the fingers and use thumb circles in the palms of the recipient's hands.

Abdomen, Front of Legs and Feet

Through the sheet, apply large circular motions to the receiver's abdomen with the palms of your hands. Begin gently by simply placing your hands on their abdomen. Add light circular motions starting from the lower right side, up to the ribcage, then down the left side and across.

Uncover one leg. Beginning from the ankle; use long gliding strokes up over the shins, around the kneecap and up to the upper thigh. Repeat several times. Follow up with kneading the strong upper thigh muscles.

Repeat massage on recipient's other leg.

Finish the full body massage with your receiver's feet. Using supported thumbs or knuckles, make circular motions over the entire sole of the foot. Be firm with pressure or the receiver may find it ticklish instead of soothing. Gently pull and slightly twist toes to relieve tension there. Cover the feet with a sheet and lightly place your hands on the tops of them to impart a further feeling of relaxation and safety, while indicating an end to the massage.

Have Summer Fun And Be Safe

When summer is finally here--the blue skies and hot days make us all want to enjoy our time out in the sun vacationing on some exotic island, perhaps hiking in the woods, or simply just sunbathing in our local parks or backyard. Planning a day trip or long summer vacation with the family is very important, especially if you are going to travel long distances or to a foreign country.

Here I will give some tips on planning and packing essential items for a safe and healthy summer outing or vacation.

Instructions

1. Bring sun protection if you are going on vacation or just for a day at the local beach. Protection from the sun's harmful UV rays will help prevent sunburn, aging skin and decrease the risk of skin cancers later in life. Use sunscreen protection with SPF above 15 to 20, as well as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to protect against UV rays. Some great products that are found at most local pharmacies include: Banana Blok (available for adults and children), Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Sun Block, SPF 55 and Solbar Zinc Cream, SPF 38. Don't forget to protect your lips from the UV rays as well. Blistex Clear Advance Lip Balm, SPF 30 is one product that works very well.

2. Pack some anti-motion sickness medication to prevent dizziness, nausea and vomiting for car rides, cruise ships, boat trips or even amusement parks. Dimenhydrinate, also known as brand names Dramamine and Gravol are available as over-the-counter drugs for nausea and motion sickness. Be very careful not to use these if you are driving, as they can cause drowsiness.

3. Be prepared for any lurking dangers on a summer camping trip or hike. Insect and snake bite prevention is important to consider when planning the trip or vacation. There are many brands of insect repellents that contain the ingredient DEET to keep insects from biting. Use carefully and as directed on the product label, with a lower concentration for young children or if you are pregnant. Permethrin Spray is a reliable non-staining insecticide for clothing and bedding.

4. Take along medications or over-the-counter topical creams for insect bites, rashes, poison oak or ivy. Some effective products that are available in pharmacies are: hydrocortisone cream, Aveno bath and other products and calamine lotion. Hydrocortisone relieves itching and inflammation from the offending trigger; an Aveno bath will help to soothe dry or irritated skin and calamine lotion will help to cool and give relief from the discomfort caused by poison oak or ivy exposure.

5. Pack some antihistamine in your bag to relieve allergy symptoms from pollen, dust, animal dander, smog and polluted air that can be triggered by the summer heat. Be careful what brand you choose since some antihistamines can cause drowsiness. Chlorpheniramine, brand name Chlor-Trimeton, diphenhydramine, brand name Benadryl, loratadine (Claritin) and cetirizine (Zyrtec) are readily available at most drugstores.

Natural Cures For Insomnia

Whether short-term or chronic, insomnia can be a truly aggravating experience. Many people dislike using sleeping pills as a cure, either because they don't like the side effects or because they are taking other medications that do not react well with the pills. Though you should always speak with your doctor about any medical problem, the Mayo Clinic recommends a number of alternate techniques to cure insomnia without resorting to medication.

Set Schedule

One of the best habitual cures for insomnia is simply to go to bed and get up at the same time every day, even on weekends.

Bedroom Equals Sleep

Avoid using your bedroom for any activity other than sleep and lovemaking. The association will increase your drowsiness on a psychosomatic level.

Relax

If you find yourself tossing and turning for more than fifteen minutes, get out of bed and do something relaxing. Reading a book or watching TV will take your mind off of the effort of sleeping.

Avoid Caffeine and Nicotine

Caffeinated beverages will keep you awake, as will nicotine. Don't take them within six hours of your intended bed time.

Don't Nap

Napping can throw off your internal clock and make it harder to get to sleep at night. Power through any afternoon drowsiness and maintain a set sleep schedule.

Symptoms Of A Popliteal Artery Aneurysm

A popliteal artery aneurysm (PAA), the most common of peripheral aneurysms, is a dilation of the artery that runs behind the knee. Since patients with PAA are at risk of limb amputation if left untreated, it is important to know the symptoms of this condition and the treatments that are available.

Occurrence

Popliteal artery aneurysms are most often found in patients in their 60s and 70s. In more than 50% of cases, these aneurysms occur bilaterally. Twenty percent to 40% percent of the cases correspond with an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Causes

The cause for popiteal artery aneurysms remains unknown. Recent research suggests that genetic defects and inflammation may increase PAA risk.

Symptoms

Two-thirds of patients present with symptoms, which include: ischemia (poor circulation) in the legs; compression of nerves, veins and connective tissue in the legs; deep vein thrombosis; and edema.

Tests

An examination by a physician can diagnose a PAA, which is confirmed by an ultrasound. An ultrasound will also determine the size of the aneurysm and whether a clot is present.

Treatment

Surgery is often required for treatment. An incision is made in the leg, the aneurysm removed, and a vein is used to reconnect the artery. In some cases, stents are required to reconnect the artery.

Complications

If untreated, PAAs may have complications. If a clot is present, the lower leg can lose blood flow, leading to ischemia and gangrene. Thrombosis is seen in 55% of cases, and embolisms are seen in 7% to 25% of patients. Treatment is critical, as leg amputation may be necessary in the cases of severe ischemia, thrombosis and embolism.

Cleanse A Person'S Aura

Cleanse a Person's Aura

If you have been practicing meditation and working with your chakras for a while, you know how well a clean, balanced and harmonious aura can affect your life. Sometimes we know someone who is having a hard time coping; we can sense spiritual negativity and misalignment in their auric field. If these people do not practice meditation and cleansing on themselves, or if they are simply in too deep and too spiritually weak to help themselves, you can offer to cleanse their aura for them.

Instructions

Cleanse a Person's Aura

1. Prepare the room where the cleansing will take place with a physical cleansing. Fume the room with sage to create a positive vibration. If you like, set the mood with incense, candles, music, flowers, or anything that you or your friend will find relaxing and uplifting.

2. Make sure your own energies are balanced and in harmony before attempting to do a spiritual cleansing on someone else. An hour or so before your friend arrives, take some time to meditate. Check your chakras in meditation and ensure that they are functioning well. Before ending your meditation, open your chakras to increase your sensitivity.

3. In an open space, set up a comfortable area for your friend to sit or lie. The benefits of sitting on a chair is that you don't have to ask her to turn over; you can work both sides at once. The benefits of her lying down is that she may be able to get more relaxed during the cleansing. Ask your friend if she has a preference. Just make sure that the space you are working in is roomy enough for you to be able to walk around your friend and approach her comfortably at every angle.

4. When your friend arrives, have him sit or lie down. Begin by breathing together. Ask your friend to close his eyes and to rhythmically inhale and exhale. Tell your friend he can keep his eyes closed during the cleansing if he likes and ask him not to speak during the cleansing. If your friend is new to this, inform him of what is about to take place so he can relax and not worry about what will happen.

5. Hold your hands about six inches away from your friend and open yourself to sensing his energy. Starting at the top of his head, and working your way all around his body, down to his feet. If he is lying down, ask him to turn over when you've finished with his front.

6. As you are working your way over his body, pay close attention to the feelings that come to you. Notice any areas that tingle, feel hallow or thicker than others, or feel particularly warm or cold. Anything unusual. These are the areas you will want to focus on later.

7. After your initial "examination" of your friend's aura, run your hands over him again, this time "ruffling" his energy. Move your hands the way you would ruffle someone's hair, but without touching your friend's body.

8. Go from head to toe again, this time wiping downward. Visualize wiping the negativity off of your friend. As you do this, shake and wipe your hands off occasionally like you would as if they were wet and you have no towel. This will help get the residual negativity off of yourself so that it doesn't cling to you.

9. Go back over the problem areas you detected. If a place feels cold, project heat from your hands. If a place feels warm, project coolness. If a place feels rough, smooth it out. If it feels thick, scoop some energy away. If it feels thin or hallow, smooth in some energy like you would fill a hole of sand. Allow your instincts to take over.

10. "Wipe" your friend down once again, smoothing out his aura. Continue to shake off your own hands whenever you feel necessary.

11. Talk to your friend about the experience when you are finished. Ask your friend how she feels, and if she felt anything at any point during the cleansing. Tell her about the problem areas. Ask her if she's had any noticeable physical symptoms in those areas, such as soreness, aches, pains, stiffness, injuries or illnesses. You might want to suggest that your friend have a doctor pay close attention to those areas during her next check-up.

12. When your friend leaves, you might want to cleanse your own aura again, or smudge yourself with sage to rid yourself of any last vestiges of the negativity you removed from your friend to keep your own aura in balance.

Alcohol Detox Tips

Alcohol detox is the process in which your body frees itself from the toxins associated with alcohol addiction. The period in which the body purges alcohol is called acute detox, and during this time, your body must break its physical dependence on alcohol. Mental dependence on alcohol is broken during acute detox and the subsequent period of rehabilitation.

Can You Detox at Home?

It is possible to detox from alcohol at home with the appropriate support. Alcohol detox involves both physical symptoms and an almost uncontrollable mental urge for alcohol. Therefore, in order to detox at home, you must be under the care of a person who can cope with and manage the symptoms of detox, someone who can prevent you from injuring yourself, and someone who can ensure that you do not obtain access to alcohol during the detox period. Following the period of acute detox, you generally must attend meetings and/or find another type of support to overcome mental addiction.

In-patient rehab is generally more expensive and requires an average of six weeks of living in residence at a detox center. However, you will be monitored 24 hours a day during the acute detox period, and therapy options and support meetings will be available on site.

What to Expect

Within 12- to 24-hours after your last drink, you will begin experiencing symptoms of withdrawal. The initial symptoms are simply irritability, craving alcohol, anorexia (the inability to eat), nausea, and insomnia. After approximately 24 hours, you may begin to have auditory, visual or tactile hallucinations. The auditory and tactile hallucinations usually stop after 48- to 72-hours, but the visual hallucinations may persist and peak about 5 days after you start detox. You may also begin to experience seizures, tremors, convulsions, hypertension, delirium and fever anywhere from 48- to 72-hours after detox. For patients with severe alcoholism, symptoms usually peak after 5 days. In general, acute detox usually takes anywhere from 3- to 7-days depending on the extent of your addiction..

Drugs to Help

Certain drugs can help make the detox process less painful by reducing symptoms. These drugs include benzadiazeine, beta blockers, carbamazepine, haloperiodl, phenytonin, and clonidine.

Medicaid Gift Giving Rules

Medicaid is a public health care program in the United States that provides health insurance coverage to qualifying persons and families. Medicaid is awarded based on income levels and available resources, and is potentially available to people of all ages. Assets---including real property, stocks, and investments---and income from interest, trust funds and other sources are all considered when you apply for the program. Many people try to give away their assets to family members to "hide" resources so they may qualify.

Eligibility and Liquid Assets

Medicaid reviews your income and resources when determining your eligibility. "Resources" encompass any other source that could provide you with additional income, specifically, liquid assets. A liquid asset is any item you can sell with little or no loss in value---meaning, you receive the value of the item, or close to it, in cash. Real estate, mutual funds, the value of your life insurance policy, and the balance of any checking or savings accounts are all liquid assets. Even if you meet the income guidelines for Medicaid, your available resources can prevent you from being accepted. As of October 2009, you can have no more than $2,000 a month in income and resources as an individual, and no more than $3,000 as a couple.

Gifts

Any income or liquid asset that you give to your family can be considered a gift under Medicaid guidelines. For example, giving your summer home to your children would be considered a gift, because the home could be sold for at or above value, and the money you receive would then count as income. Cash gifts, savings bonds and similar items are also considered gifts. This does not mean you cannot give your family members presents; items like MP3 players, books and clothing will not count against you for eligibility purposes. Not only are these items difficult to liquidate, they are considered personal belongings, not assets. Jewelry is the exception, as it is commonly used to hide assets because it is easily bought and sold.

Gifts and Eligibility

Nursing home residents have been trying to circumvent eligibility issues by passing off their assets to family members. This is potentially fraudulent if they can cover their nursing home costs by liquidating their assets. After the resident has used all of his available resources to cover the nursing home costs, he is then eligible for Medicaid and his costs would be covered by the program.

Gift Rules

Medicaid requires that any nursing home resident who seeks coverage through the program must not give any of her assets to family members for the purposes of hiding her true resources. Any resident who wishes to transfer property must receive full value in return. This means that if you wish to give your home to your children before moving into a nursing home, your children must pay you the fair market value in return. You cannot simply give your home to them, nor can you accept less than market value.

To counteract giving gifts for the purpose of hiding assets, the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 increased the stringency of gift-giving rules under Medicaid. The DRA specifically focuses on the transference of real estate and other assets owned by nursing home residents. Under the law, any Medicaid recipient who will be entering a nursing home and is seeking to have Medicaid cover the entire cost is subject to having all property and asset transfers reviewed. There is a five-year "look-back period," meaning any transfers that occurred up to five years before the recipient applied for nursing home coverage will be counted. Any property or asset transference by the nursing home resident in which the resident did not receive full value in return is considered fraudulent for the purposes of qualifying for Medicaid.

Penalties

Part of the penalty includes being declared ineligible for Medicaid for a potentially significant period. This is determined by calculating the value of the property or assets that were given away, and dividing it by the average cost of private nursing home expenses to see how many months would have been covered. Essentially, Medicaid calculates how long you would have been able to pay for nursing home costs privately using the income you would have received from selling the asset, and this is the length of the penalty period. When the penalty period is over, you will be able to apply for Medicaid coverage, and if you made no additional property transfers during that time, you will be accepted and your nursing home costs covered. Also, you could be declared ineligible for nursing home coverage for an indefinite period. In addition, you and any other person involved could receive fines of up to $10,000 for each transferred asset, additional fines, and up to five years of prison time for violating Medicaid's gift-giving rules.

What Is A Home Remedy For Addiction To Cigarettes

Smoking is a very addictive health hazard, leading to numerous health problems including cancer and emphysema. When you decide that you are finally ready to quit smoking, you are faced with a daunting task. There are pills, patches and gum on the market--some have been shown to be very effective, although they are expensive and require physician supervision. However, there are ways to stop smoking without having to have a prescription from your doctor or spend a lot of money.

Honey

Honey has been used in several ways to help stop cigarette cravings. You can drink it in tea, add it to toast or get it in a supplement available at your health food store. Another remedy to cut down on cravings is to mix 2 teaspoons of honey with a freshly grated radish and drink the juice it produces.

Licorice

Licorice is another remedy used to help you stop smoking. Chewing sticks of black licorice not only can stop your urges for cigarettes by giving you something to hold and keeping your hands busy, but there also is an enzyme in licorice that when released can cut down severely on your cravings. Licorice can be cut down to cigarette length and placed into a cigarette box so when the urge strikes, you can take out a licorice stick and chew on that. If you don't like the taste of licorice, you can purchase licorice supplements from your local health store.

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus can be found in any local grocery store spice aisle or as a supplement at your local health food store. Boiling eucalyptus leaves in water and drinking the water four times a day has been shown to help stop cravings for cigarettes. Taking eucalyptus supplements along with ingesting honey has been shown to not only stop the cravings but also reduce the urge to eat prompted by nicotine withdrawal. Eucalyptus also can be purchased in oil form. Evidence suggests that placing drops of the oil on the inside of each wrist and behind each ear can limit the amount of cravings you experience as well.

Tips

Using a combination of these techniques along with getting plenty of sleep and exercise can cut your cravings down a great deal and allow you to end your addiction to cigarettes and start a healthier life. Before stopping smoking and beginning any kind of new activity, consult your health care professional.

The Alzheimer'S Medication Patch

Exelon is a drug used to treat mild to moderate symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. It is available in several forms, including a skin patch. Use of the drug in this form is associated with a lower chance of experiencing unwanted side effects, as opposed to taking Exelon by mouth.

History

In July 2007, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the use of the medication patch, Exelon, to treat Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Exelon delivers the drug, rivastigmine, through the skin. Rivastigmine was formerly only prescribed in pill form and in a liquid taken by mouth. Although Exelon was available to be taken by mouth, it caused unwanted side effects. Some patients also had a hard time swallowing the pill. In 2006, researchers proposed that a medicated skin patch for the drug be developed to avoid these unwanted side effects and complications.

Effects

Some of the side effects associated with the Alzheimer's skin patch, Exelon, include abdominal pain, anxiety, aggression, confusion, constipation, depression, diarrhea, fatigue, headache, gas, insomnia, night sweats, loss of appetite, vomiting and weight loss. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for a full list of Exelon side effects. Taking Exelon in the patch form is less likely to cause nausea than taking it in pill form.

Warning

Exelon was not designed for women in their child-bearing years. It is unknown how the drug affects women that are pregnant or breastfeeding. Exelon hasn't been studied in children either. It is important to consult a doctor or pharmacist if the Alzheimer's skin patch will be used in combination with other drugs. Using Exelon at the same time as other medications can change the way the drug works in the body by increasing or decreasing the drug's effects. Exelon can make breathing problems worse. Similar drugs have been associated with a greater chance of developing stomach problems.

Function

Exelon, the Alzheimer's skin patch, is used to tread mild and moderate Alzheimer's. It can be placed on the arm, back or chest and should be changed every 24 hours. Alzheimer's disease symptoms include memory loss and changes in mood and behavior. Symptoms start with loss of memory, but eventually lead to impaired thinking and incapacitation followed by death. The Alzheimer's skin patch works by increasing the levels of the chemical messenger acetylcholine in the bloodstream. Exelon doesn't cure Alzheimer's disease, but it decreases its progress.

Time Frame

The drug in the Alzheimer's skin patch is delivered over a period of one full day. It is important to note that it can be as long as 12 weeks before the full effects take place so patience is required with the use of this form of Exelon.

Coffee Slang Words

Coffee Slang Words

The next time someone asks for a cup of tar or brain juice, hand them a cup of coffee, as the terms are just a small sip of the many slang words used to describe one of the best-selling beverages across the world. Coffee slang seemingly comes in as many varieties as the coffee itself, and many of the terms belie coffee's station and importance in life.

Significance

The huge number of slang terms for coffee clearly illustrate its huge importance in daily life. The coffee industry has gone through ups and downs but it will likely never go dry. The use of slang often comes about when something has been widely recognized and people are intimate with the product. Slang is also much more fun than a term coined for standard use. After all, it's much more amusing and endearing to ask for a cup of joe or mother's little helper than it is to order a boring old coffee.

Function

Some folks don't drink coffee for the taste but for its side effects. Many drink coffee to kick off or jump start their day or to simply wake up. Terms that reflect the power of coffee include picker-upper, plasma, caffeine, day starter and lifeblood, according to CocoaJava.com. The site also cites wakey juice, caffeine fix, cup of jolt, morning thunder, one's daily infusion, daily energy and the pun-like daily grind.

Effects

Coffee can be like fuel for the brain or body, hence a wide range of slang that likens coffee to gasoline. While some may be making a sarcastic allusion to coffee's taste, others are honest in revering coffee as brain juice. Other terms of this nature include high octane, jet fuel, rocket fuel, leaded, unleaded, high test, liquid energy and cupped or liquid lightning.

Geography

Regional slang terms for coffee are another category. Those in the Wild West used to call coffee Arbuckle's, named after a popular brand at the time, according to the Web site LegendsOfAmerica.com. The term's current use implies a cup of cowboy coffee, thick, black, hot and strong. Another site, INeedCoffe.com, said the term Arbuckle's was not a brand of coffee but rather the method cowboys used for brewing it to get it thick, black, hot and strong. Another term based on region is java, which is derived from the island of Java in Indonesia where premium coffee is grown. Other regional terms for coffee include Americano, the Swiss Kaffee and Manila's Kape, according to CocoaJava.com

Misconceptions

Just because some of the coffee slang may sound like coffee is wholly unpleasant, doesn't mean it's a horrific beverage. The phrases may have been coined after a horrible experience with coffee or, more likely, as a term of endearment, not unlike calling a child a little brat or "boogerbutt." These terms include many variations of mud, morning mud, muddy water and murk. Others include battery acid and tar.

Potential

As the types of coffee change, become more elaborate and are festooned with whipped cream and cinnamon sticks, an ordinary cup of joe becomes increasingly harder to find. With the proliferation of gourmet coffee shops whipping up lattes and mochachinos, the slang evolves to match the product. Newer slang in the vernacular has come to include misto, which is synonymous with an American cafe au lait or, in Paris, un creme, according to CocoaJava.com. Popular brand names and notable figures are also often used as coffee slang, such as a cup of Juan Valdez's best.

Prevent Sand Flea Bites

Prevent Sand Flea Bites

Most people think of a trip to the beach and imagine nothing more than sand, sun and good times. Few people imagine red, itchy welts on the backs of their legs. Anyone who has dealt with sand flea bites knows that they're not much fun at the beach. Take these precautions at your next beach excursion to prevent sand flea bites.

Instructions

1. Try to avoid the beach after it has rained. These moist, cooler conditions seem to put the fleas at their friskiest state. Give the area a chance to dry and warm up a little before venturing out.

2. Wait until mid-morning to early afternoon to go the beach, as the cooler early morning hours are a favorite time of these little mites.

3. Give your body a good coating of insect repellent before heading out. Check the label to make sure that the repellent works on fleas and not just mosquitoes.

4. Put something between yourself and the sand before sitting down, be it a beach towel or lawn chair. The reason sand flea bites are commonly located on the backs of the thighs is because this is the most exposed and accessible area when sitting directly on the sand.

5. Wear longer shorts if there will be direct contact with the sand. Board shorts work fairly well. Be mindful of the calves and ankles, however, as they are fair game as well.

6. Reapply the insect repellent if the beach party continues after sunset. Biting insects tend to get a second wind when the evening sets in.

Stop Rapid Hair Loss

If your hair is falling out in clumps, there has to be a reason. Perhaps you have an illness. Hair is the telltale sign of your overall health. If something is going on internally, and it is not good, your hair will be affected. Get ready to go to battle with your shedding hair.

Instructions

1. Make an appointment with your doctor, express your concerns, and undergo blood tests to see if there is an underlying issue, which may be causing your rapid hair loss. You may have a thyroid condition, lupus or an auto-immune disease, including alopecia, which causes a person to lose all of his hair. If your hair suddenly starts falling out, it could be an indication that you are suffering from an as yet undetected underlying illness.

2. Determine if you are getting the proper vitamins and minerals in your diet. If you are anemic (ironic deficient) this can cause your hair to fall out. If you do not have the right amount of Vitamin B (B5 B6 B12 Biotin) in your system, this too can promote hair loss. Tests can be done to determine if you are anemic and deficient in other areas. An individual needs copper, zinc and magnesium in his diet to maintain healthy, non-shedding hair. Fish oil supplements can provide essential fatty acids that are crucial for healthy hair. A protein rich diet is needed because hair needs protein to thrive. Vitamins C, E and A are also important for healthy hair.

3. Consider what medications you are taking. Your hair loss may be caused by your medicine. Those that can result in hair loss include contraceptives, anti-depressants, anti-seizure medication, gout medicine, acne medicine and chemotherapy drugs.

4. Alter your hair style. If you are pulling your hair back into a tight bun or pony tail you are causing stress on your hair, which may result in it falling out. If you are over-bleaching, over-perming or over-processing, this is going to take its toll on your hair. Extensions can be stressful on hair.

5. Consider what is going on in your life. Are you dealing with stress? Are you remotely getting enough sleep and is it sound sleep? Are you post-partum or menopausal? Did you recently have surgery or suffer from some trauma? If any of these are the reason for your hair loss, the loss shouldn't be permanent but you need to address these issues and seek medical help or assistance from an alternative medicine practitioner so that you can stop the hair loss in its tracks.

The slump test is an effective orthopedic test that chiropractors use to look for entrapment of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and many chiropractors will argue that it's also the most susceptible to entrapment.

Step 1

The first part of the slump test is to position the individual upright in a chair with the body leaning slightly forward. It is important not to flex the body forward. Only a slight lean of the upper trunk is necessary.

Step 2

The second step involves either the individual or the practitioner extending first the unaffected leg (putting the leg straight out), followed by the affected leg. A patient with acute sciatica will usually show a reaction of pain when steps 1 and 2 are combined together.

Step 3

If steps 1 and 2 did not produce any pain, additional stressing of the sciatic nerve may be needed. Step 3 involves the practitioner dorsi-flexing the individual's foot. While the leg is extended, the practitioner should pull the foot inward and up. As in step 2, this should be done first with the uninvolved leg.

Step 4

Step 4 involves grabbing the ankle of the now dorsi-flexed foot and pulling the thigh internally, or toward the doctor, who should be standing on the side of the opposite leg. This will put further stress on the sciatic nerve and may reproduce pain associated with a sciatic nerve entrapment.

Step 5

The final step of the slump test (only to be done if the first four were negative) is to have the patient flex his neck to his chest. This motion puts an opposite stress on the spinal cord and pulls the sciatic nerve into a more taut position.

Misconceptions

The slump test is a good identifier of a sciatic nerve lesion. However, it should be noted that this test needs to be preformed by a qualified health care professional. There are other diagnostic tests that have to be run in order to confirm the diagnosis suggested by the slump test.

Beyond these properties though, many people believe that quartz crystals also have spiritual and magical properties. These properties make quartz crystals good for meditation, healing and a variety of other endeavors.

The Universal Stone

Quartz is often referred to as the universal stone, or the universal crystal. Indeed, when many people hear the word crystal they usually envision quartz crystals. The reason for the name is that quartz is used as a power stone, or a type of magical battery. It can also be used as an energy amplifier, should a person choose to do so.

Quartz crystals are said to bring balance and clarity to a person's environment. This is why quartz is often used in decorating places that should remain calm. Quartz can also be an aid to meditation if a person focuses their energies through it.

Countering

Quartz is a power stone for positive energy. Some believe that as a physically strong stone, quartz can be used to counter black magic and harmful spells. For this reason quartz is often worked into charms and necklaces to keep a person metaphysically safe. It is also believed that quartz crystals can keep a person filled with positive energy by being worn.

Spirits

Quartz is said to assist in amplifying psychic abilities and in communicating with spirits and with other worlds. It does this by taking a person's energy and helping them focus it, much like a form of spiritual laser by bringing the full force to bear.

Wisdom and Knowledge

Quartz crystals are also supposed to help a person with gaining wisdom and with acquiring knowledge. As a stone associated with wisdom, quartz crystals are said to bring wisdom into the mind of a person who works with them. Quartz is also supposed to help a person concentrate and remember new skills or information if they focus through the quartz while learning.
