Activated charcoal is an effective remedy for counteracting the effects of ingested poisons. It absorbs irritants in the stomach and intestines, which make it useful for other conditions, as well, such as diarrhea, indigestion and intestinal gas. Always contact a poison control center before treating a person who has been poisoned, or before trying to remedy a poisoning yourself. Each chemical or irritant is different.
Instructions
1. Only use this remedy if recommended by your poison control center, and only if the person who has ingested a poison is awake and able to swallow. If the charcoal is in a capsule form, the person may need to take 15 to 20 capsules for first aid, depending upon the toxicity of the ingested poison and the quantity taken. If the charcoal is in liquid form, follow the recommendations of the poison control center.
2. Activated charcoal in liquid form is a black drink. Have the person swallow the liquid as soon as possible after ingesting the poisoning. Because the type of poison, the size of the person and the time since ingestion all are factored into how much and how often to take the charcoal, it is recommended that treatment be given in accordance with the recommendations of a poison control center or local emergency room.
3. Even if using activated charcoal as an antidote for poisoning, it is a good idea to get the person to an emergency room as soon as possible for follow-up care. This is particularly important when dealing with child poisoning.

An X-ray technician is one of the most sought after jobs in the health care industry today. This professional provides insightful images to doctors and surgeons so they can make careful decisions regarding a patient's health. There are health concerns when dealing with radiation, which requires the technician to be well armed with both education and experience.
The Facts
There were over 196,000 people employed as radiologic technicians in 2006. Sixty percent are employed in hospitals while other technicians held jobs at clinics, physician's offices and at medical and diagnostic laboratories. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics this job sector is expected to grow faster than any other occupation during a ten year span (2006 to 2016) at about 15 percent. The average earning potential of an X-ray technician in 2006 was $48,170 with the highest earners making $68,920.
Function
An X-ray technician's primary responsibility is to make sure the x-rays images that are taken are exactly what the doctor or surgeon asked for. The images need to be clear and focused on the intended area. The technician is also responsible for making sure all necessary precautions are taken so the patient is exposed to as little radiation from the x-ray machine as possible. Certain imaging, such as MRI and CT scans, may require fluoroscopies, meaning the technician will prepare a solution for a patient to drink in order to see the soft tissue during the imaging.
Education
To be an x-ray technician having a high school diploma is mandatory. Some employers require a technician to possess a college education with a two-year associates degree program being the preferred choice. There are one year certificate programs for experienced technicians or those from a different medical field changing careers. A supervisor in this field is often required to have a bachelor's or master's degree. Another requirement may be licensure, as 40 states now mandate technicians to be certified to work.
Misconceptions
Although the image of one's inner body may be a great way to diagnose and improve your health, the machines that takes these informative pictures can also be harmful. According to a National Academy of Science panel, low doses from x-ray machines including full body CT scans can pose a cancer risk. They concluded that 1 out of 1,000 people will develop cancer from a single CT scan. This might be a scary scenario, but a professor of radiology suggests not avoiding getting x-rays because the benefits outweigh the risk. He cautions that one should minimize the frequency of getting exposed to radiation to specific medical problems.
Types
Technicians use several types of devices that involve radiation for imaging purposes. Besides the x-ray machine, technicians will also handle magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines. These machines produce cross sectional images to make a three dimensional image of an area of the body. CT, or computed technology, scans are images produced the same way as MRIs. However, the difference is CT scanners use ionizing radiation, so technicians must exercise the same precautionary measures they do with x-ray machines. MRI machines do not use ionizing radiation.
Russell-Silver syndrome often leads to slowed growth, body asymmetry and short height. Children with this condition are usually born with normal intelligence, although learning disabilities can occur later on.
Cause
In most cases, no cause can be determined. According to the National Institutes of Health, approximately 7 to 10 percent of patients have a defective maternal uniparental disomy gene. Most children have no family history of this disorder.
Symptoms
Russell-Silver symptoms include delayed bone age, different arm and leg lengths, low birth weight, kidney problems, stubby fingers and toes, triangle-shaped face, wide forehead, narrow chin, gastroesophageal reflux disease, café-au-lait colored spots and poor growth. Symptoms are more prominent in infants and young children.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis, which usually occurs in early childhood, can be based on physical appearance. Diagnostic testing of bone age, chromosomes, blood sugar, growth hormone and skeletal survey can also be done, although there is no definitive test for this condition.
Treatment
Growth hormone replacement or a proper diet recommended by a nutritionist or gastroenterologist can enhance growth. Learning disabilities can be handled through special education. Physical therapy might also be needed.
Complications
Psychological help or counseling might be needed for children who develop emotional problems or low self-esteem due to their physical appearance. Small jaws could lead to trouble with speaking or chewing.
Symptoms of menstruation such as fatigue, bloating and irritability are often referred to as premenstrual syndrome. Hormonal fluctuations are responsible for the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, and may also cause similar symptoms after menopause. While hormone replacement therapy can treat some of the symptoms of menopause, the use of estrogen can mimic some the symptoms of having a period.
Bloating
Bloating is a symptom that can occur as a part of premenstrual syndrome and may occur after menopause as a side effect of estrogen therapy.
Irritability
Low levels of estrogen after menopause may cause irritability, which is common during women's menstrual periods.
Weight Gain
After menopause, women may experience weight gain as a result of fluid retention, which may be similar to weight gain during menstruation.
Breast Tenderness
Women who use hormone replacement therapy after menopause may experience symptoms of breast tenderness that is similar to menstrual breast tenderness.
Headache
Headaches are a common menstrual symptom, and may also be experienced after menopause due to hormone fluctuations.
Decreased Libido
A lack of interest in sex often occurs during a woman's menstrual period, and is common after menopause due to low levels of estrogen.
Fatigue
Fatigue is a symptom of menstruation that may also occur during menopause as a result of hormonal and metabolic changes.

The dangers of sun exposure include sunburn, heat stroke or skin cancer, in the form of melanomas that form on the skin and become cancerous. The American Cancer Society recommends everyone wear sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Examine your skin regularly. Pay attention to any changes in size or appearance of moles or freckles. See your doctor immediately if you have dark spots from sun exposure that do not fade.
Significance
Sun exposure is more hazardous these days, as the Earth's ozone layer has thinned from the widespread use of CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) that "punch" holes in the ozone, allowing more burning ultraviolet rays (UVA) to enter. Sunscreens that provide protection from UVA and UVB are recommended.
Identification
Sunburn is considered sun poisoning when the skin reddens and may puff or even blister and later painfully peel off. See your doctor for any serious sunburns. Sunstroke can occur from overexposure to the sun and failure to drink water throughout the day. Go to an emergency room if you have a sudden fever, followed by chills, headache or vomiting. Skin cancer can occur from repeated exposure to the sun without adequate protection from UVA rays.
Features
Skin cancer affects 1 million people a year in the United States. While in many countries, it is not a sign of health to have tanned skin, in the United States, a summer tan is still a hallmark of youth and beauty. Skin cancer in the form of melanomas must be screened by a doctor. Untreated, skin cancer can spread to the internal organs and be fatal.
Warning
Sunning without wearing sunscreen or protective clothing can result in serious sunburns, heat stroke or skin cancer. People who are fair-skinned or have had at least one bad sunburn are at higher risk for skin cancer.
Prevention/Solution
Avoid being outside in the sun between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun is at its brightest. If you must be outdoors, wear sunscreen, a sunhat, sunglasses and appropriate clothing. Remain hydrated and do not use products such as baby oil to get a fast tan.
Misconceptions
It is a misconception to think that you need sunscreen only during the spring and summer. Sunscreen should be applied to the skin daily. UVA rays penetrate during cloudy days.

When choosing a doctor, good credentials are essential. But, a positive bedside manner is just as important. Imagine yourself at a doctor's office. As you tell the physician your symptoms, he is typing notes on the computer and it is obvious he is not fully listening to you. When he summarizes your symptoms, many details are left out and you are unsure of his recommended treatment. This is not only frustrating, it can be hazardous to your health.
When it comes to health care, choosing a doctor who is both competent and caring is vital. Here are a few steps on find doctor who is right for you.
Instructions
1. List all the qualities you look for in a doctor. Divide the qualities into categories of most important, some importance, and least important. Record this in your notebook so you have a tangible list in hand.
2. Write down the name of all your previous doctors and place their names next to the qualities you listed. Check to see what qualities they are missing.
3. Check Internet sites like PatientsRightToKnow.org. These sites allow you to check credentials and previous malpractice suits within your respective state. Also, find sites that provide you with doctor reviews.
4. Ask your friends and family for recommendations as well as the names of doctors they do not recommend. Take notes and add this to the list you already started.
5. Check the phone book and make a list of doctors' offices you plan to visit.
6. Visit a site and ask specific questions of the doctor such as "How long do you spend with each patient?," "Can I contact you via phone or e-mail," "How do you break bad news?" and "Do you dictate (make a report of the visit) while the patient is in the room?" This will reveal the doctor's accessibility and bedside manner.
7. Observe the doctor's body language. Check to see if he or she is looking at you while talking. That reveals the doctor is engaged in conversation. Check to see if he or she shakes your hand upon entrance. This reveals warmth and friendliness.
8. Go to a different doctors' office and repeat steps 6 to7. Remember to be patient; doctor shopping is not an easy task.
9. Take notes after visiting each site, listing what you liked and what you did not like. After visiting all the sites, weigh each doctors pros and cons and determine which doctor best represents what you are looking for. Congratulations, you have found the best doctor for you.

Perimenopause is the period, leading up to menopause, during which a woman experiences physical symptoms that indicate she is losing her fertility. Being familiar with perimenopausal symptoms can help you ease through this potentially difficult time.
Top Symptoms
The most common perimenopausal symptoms are irregularities in menstrual cycle and hot flashes (sudden sensations of heat, often accompanied by flushed skin).
Other Symptoms
Other common symptoms of perimenopause include mood changes, vaginal dryness, urinary tract infections, bone loss, changes in sexual desire and decreased fertility.
Hormone Changes
Perimenopausal symptoms occur when the body's levels of estrogen and progesterone (female hormones) fluctuate and eventually decrease, until you no longer ovulate, which means a complete loss of fertility.
Time Frame
According to the Mayo Clinic, perimenopause symptoms often occur in the forties, but can begin in the late thirties. These symptoms typically last two to eight years until menopause arrives.
Treatment
If you are experiencing severe perimenopausal symptoms, your doctor might suggest hormone therapy for relief. Options include estrogen therapy and combined estrogen-progesterone therapy, according to the North American Menopause Society.
Carpal tunnel syndrome can cause pain and numbness throughout the thumb, index and middle fingers. If caught early, exercises can relieve the pain from the median nerve and loosen the tunnel in which it lies. Here's stretch for carpal tunnel relief.
Instructions
1. Place the palm of the affected hand flat against a wall with all five fingers spread. Fully extend the arm and take several deep breaths. Slowly turn your head towards the opposite side and take another deep breath. Hold the stretch and return your head forward.
2. Put both hands together in front of your face, palms touching in a traditional prayer position. Slowly bring the hands straight down to the middle of the chest until you feel the stretch in your wrists.
3. Move your hands to the right while keeping both palms flush, and then move them to the left. Move your hands as far as far as you can without pain. Hold each stretch for a few seconds while breathing deeply.
4. Make two fists and place them on top of a flat surface with your thumbs pointing up. Flex the closed fist to the right then to the left while the forearm lies against the table. Lift your arms off the table and move your fists in small circles.
5. Open your fists. Place your fingertips on the edge of a table while keeping them close together. Slowly bring the wrists down towards the floor but keep the fingertips on the table edge. Repeat the same stretch but spread the fingers apart.

A mesomorph body type represents the "happy medium" of strength and leanness.
Cultures the world over equate obesity with a jovial personality and thinness with a nervous, jumpy disposition. Is that stereotyping warranted? How did body-based stereotypes arise? Dr. William Sheldon had the same questions. Sheldon dedicated his life to discovering how our bodies influence our behavior. One of the three body/personality types he described in his work is the lean, muscular mesomorph.
The Three Somatypes
William Sheldon (1898-1977) focused his keen powers of observation on birds and animals as a child. As an adult, he shifted those skills to study people---specifically, the intersection of their bodies and temperaments. A psychologist by trade, Sheldon taught and researched at a number of American universities over the course of his life. Sheldon is best known for his series of books on the human constitution, in which the "three somatypes" are described: endomorph, ectomorph and mesomorph.
Sheldon's Typology
The three somatotypes, as described by Sheldon in his book "The Atlas Of Men: A Guide For Somatotyping The Adult Male At All Ages," are based on the three tissue layers: endoderm, ectoderm and mesoderm. The book correlates a person's physique and their temperament. Where an endomorph is focused on the digestive system (and is therefore plump and jolly) and an ectoderm is focused on the nervous system (and is therefore skinny and apprehensive), a mesomorph is focused on the muscles and blood. To Sheldon, this presents a muscular, aggressive tendency.
Physical Qualities
According to Sheldon, the mesomorph is the middle ground between the rounded endomorph and the spindly ectomorph. He describes the mesomorph physicality as large-framed, with a large head, broad shoulders (for men) and a narrow waist. The classical mesomorph has well-developed forearms and strong thighs and pursues enough physical activity to have a low body-fat ratio. An iconic mesomorph is well-proportioned, gains muscle rapidly and loses fat efficiently. Female mesomorphs are hourglass-shaped.
Psychological Qualities
According to Sheldon's research, the body types correspond to psychological profiles. Mesomorph psychological traits match the strength of their bodies. Typically, mesomorphs are courageous adventure-seekers, socially assertive, competitive (to the point of being power-driven) and not averse to risk. They have a zest and natural ability for sports of all kinds. A less positive mesomorph trait is indifference to the needs and desires of others.
Mesomorph Fitness
Since mesomorphs are naturally able to build solid muscle mass, this somatype tends to respond well to physical training. Mesomorphs are lucky in that they require shorter workouts and recovery times than endomorphs and ectomorphs to achieve the same results. The ideal cardiovascular workout for a mesomorph involves short, high-intensity bursts (as opposed to long, low-intensity fat-burning sessions).

The International Osteporosis Foundation of America reports that 75 million people in the United States, Europe, and Japan suffer from osteoporosis, a condition that occurs when your bones become porous and susceptible to fractures. If you are a woman, your risk of developing osteoporosis increases after menopause. In fact, one in every three women over age 50 will suffer from a fracture caused by osteoporosis during her lifetime. There are a number of drugs available to help reduce the effects of osteoporosis in menopausal women, including ibandronic acid, also called ibandronate or boniva. Despite its effectiveness, boniva is not for everyone as it presents several risks for side effects and complications in some patients.
Common Side Effects
Approximately 5.3 to 7.8 percent of Boniva users report indigestion, an increase in blood pressure levels and abdominal pain, making these the most common side effects of the drug. Nausea, diarrhea, and joint pain are also common, occurring in at least 3.5 percent of users. More than 3 percent of women who take ibandronic acid experience back pain, headache, and inflammation of the throat.
Other Side Effects
Ibandronic acid also has the potential to cause a number of other troublesome or annoying, but not dangerous, side effects. For instance, some women reported the additional gastrointestinal symptoms of constipation, while others experienced dizziness, rash, and flu-like symptoms. Some women experience musculoskeletal side effects from the drug, such as muscle pain and cramping and pain in the extremities. Boniva also increases the incidence of some infections, such as bronchitis and urinary tract infections.
Drug Interactions
There are some medications which produce unwanted side effects when used in conjunction with ibandronic acid. Calcium supplements are commonly taken by postmenopausal women to help prevent osteoporosis; however, you should discontinue use of such supplements while taking Boniva as calcium often decreases the effectiveness of the drug. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Tylenol and aspirin should be used only in moderation while taking ibandronic acid to avoid an increase in gastrointestinal side effects.
Risks
In addition to minor side effects and the risk of interactions, ibandronic acid has the potential to cause serious medical complications. Amongst these is the danger of serious gastrointestinal side effects, including difficulty swallowing, stomach ulcers, and inflammation of the esophagus. In rare instances, ibandronic acid causes osteoarthritis in some joints, leading to joint damage and pain. Over time, Boniva may also contribute to osteonecrosis in the jaw, a serious condition that leads to the death and collapse of the jaw bone.
Considerations
Doctors typically do not prescribe Boniva to people undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatments or taking corticosteroids, as there is a greater risk for the development of osteonecrosis in such patients. Doctors also limit the use of ibandronic acid in patients who have impaired kidney function because, without proper urination, levels of Boniva can build up in the body and become toxic. To decrease the risk of developing serious gastrointestinal conditions, you should swallow Boniva tablets whole without chewing or sucking.

Allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, is an allergic reaction to specific substances that are inhaled and create inflammation inside your nose. Some of the worst offenders are pollens, pet dander, molds and dust mites. Symptoms such as sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, itchy throat or nose and/or coughing are generally prevalent when you are suffering from allergic rhinitis. Unfortunately, there is no cure for allergic rhinitis. But many preventative measures, as well as medications can help alleviate symptoms.
Outdoor Prevention
Limiting your exposure to outdoor triggers can be an effective way to reduce a reaction. Before planning a day outside, check online pollen and mold forecasts. If counts are high, try to schedule activities inside and limit your time outdoors. You may also want to plan traveling to areas where the allergy season is low, when it is at the worst in your area. In severe cases, you may want to consider wearing a mask that can help filter out allergens.
Indoor Prevention
To get rid of symptoms of allergic rhinitis indoors, be sure to vacuum with a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter. This powerful filter has the ability to remove many micro sized allergens in the home, including pet dander and pollens. HEPA filters are also available for air purifiers and air conditioners. During high allergy season, keep the windows closed and the air conditioner on to avoid letting in any outdoor triggers. If you have a pet, keep him out of your bedroom and try to limit him to one room in the house.
Fast Acting Medications
Many over-the-counter and prescription medications can help reduce the symptoms of allergic rhinitis. Antihistamines and decongestants are the most popular form of fast-acting relief medications. Antihistamines combat histamine, which is a chemical that is released in the body during an allergic reaction and creates inflammation. Decongestants are known for their power to reduce the excess congestion caused by increased inflammation. Both medications are effective and can be administered orally, with eye drops or with nasal spray. Whichever medication you take, be sure to take it at the first sign of any symptom, as it can take up to 30 minutes before any relief is felt.
Preventative Medication
When your allergic rhinitis symptoms are chronic, your doctor may prescribe preventative medications that can help keep your symptoms under control. Corticosteroids are one of the best anti inflammatory medications available. For allergies, they may be prescribed in the form of eye drops or nasal sprays such as Patanol or Nasonex. Another effective type of preventative medication is a leukotriene blocker, such as Singulair. Leukotrienes are molecules capable of signaling other cells to create inflammation. Leukotriene blockers stop this process. When used daily, these preventative medications can effectively reduce inflammation over time.
Immunotherapy
One of the best ways to cure allergic rhinitis is with immunotherapy. If you suffer from year-round allergies to pollens, pet dander and dust mites, then you may be a good candidate for this type of therapy. A series of shots containing your specific triggers is administered by your allergist. The doses start out small, and over time are increased while your body builds immunity. This desensitization process can be effective in completely eliminating your allergies; unfortunately, it is a huge time commitment. Weekly visits to your allergist can take years before any relief or change may be felt.
Many of Virginia's workers are employed in the service industry. There are a large number of jobs available in other industries such as manufacturing, government services, and retail trade. However, the majority of the rest of available jobs are in the medical field. One of the most common positions in Virginia's medical arena is the certified nurse aide (CNA). Here you will learn the basics of becoming a CNA in the state of Virginia.
Instructions
1. Search for locations where you can gain the training you seek. There are many places in Virginia a perspective CNA can study to become certified under the state law. Education in Virginia includes community colleges, universities and private schools. There are fifteen four-year public schools which are accredited universities, colleges and institutions offering a variety of degree programs. There are also twenty-four accredited public community colleges offering associate degrees and certificates.

Osteoarthritis can affect the hands and other joints.
The wearing away of cartilage between the bones and the joints can lead to a painful condition known as osteoarthritis. This degenerative health condition can eventually cause the cartilage to wear away completely, leaving nothing as a cushion between your bones and joints. Osteoarthritis often afflicts older people and women, but it can also develop as a result of being sedentary or obese. Certain natural remedies and lifestyle changes can help you treat osteoarthritis by reducing or alleviating its symptoms.
Symptoms of Osteoarthritis
Stiffness or pain in your joints when you first wake up in the morning or after sitting for a prolonged period of time can be among the first symptoms of osteoarthritis. Eventually, your joints can become inflamed, feel hot to the touch and lead to a reduced range of movement. If you favor sore joints, your muscles can become weakened in the process. Those who suffer osteoarthritis in the fingers can also end up with bony knobs at the joints, known as Heberden's nodes.
Complications of Osteoarthritis
As your condition degenerates, it can affect your quality of life, especially if it's not being properly treated. Daily tasks may become difficult to complete, and you may eventually have to reduce your workload or stop working altogether. If certain joints deteriorate to the point of having little or no cartilage left, such as in the hip or knee, your physician may recommend replacement surgery.
Lifestyle Changes to Treat Osteoarthritis
Many lifestyle factors contribute toward or exacerbate osteoarthritis symptoms. Achieving a healthy weight through weight loss and physical activity can greatly reduce your pain and discomfort. Swimming, walking and biking are a few forms of exercise that you can engage in to help strengthen the muscles that support your joints. In addition to stabilizing your joints, exercise also helps you retain range of movement. Even though it's important to exercise, it's equally important not to overdo it. Rest painful joints for 12 to 24 hours to reduce inflammation and pain.
Natural Remedies for Symptom Relief
Taking 500 to 1,500 mg of glucosamine and chondroiton daily can help preserve joint health and reduce joint pain. You can also use hot compresses to treat joint stiffness and cold compresses to relieve painful muscle spasms. Another way to reduce joint pain while preserving range of movement is to take yoga or tai chi classes with a knowledgeable instructor. Both of these types of exercise also help to relieve stress caused by the effects of osteoarthritis symptoms. Spices such as turmeric, ginger and capsaicin -- a natural component found in hot chili peppers -- can also be taken orally or topically to relieve joint inflammation and pain.

There are many sales and medical personnel who advocate the use of spinal decompression methods to help alleviate back pain and spine problems. According to an L.A. Times article (January 11, 2010), advocates of spinal decompression say it helps to slow the effects gravity has on the body while exercising, working or even just sitting.
Decompression Definition
Spinal decompression helps the spine maintain the space between each vertebra reducing the compression on the discs. Decompression methods include chiropractic manipulation, massage, traction or inversion therapy.
Stretching
One of the key benefits of spinal decompression is stretching the spine. The spine needs a high level of flexibility in order to properly support your head and body movements.
Pain Management
Those who experience back pain may find relief from using decompression therapy. This is considered a conservative treatment option that may prevent the need for surgery in some patients with back conditions.
Expert Insight
Randy A. Shelerud of the Mayo Clinic claims that many people have positive results from decompression, but this may be a placebo. More investigations need to be done to determine the true benefits of decompression therapy.
Risks
Decompression therapy involving inversion poses risks to those with high blood pressure. Those with serious back conditions should consult their doctor prior to allowing manipulations on their back, which may worsen their condition.

Colloidal silver, or CS, is purported to be a powerful antibiotic, anti-viral and anti-parasite. However, the FDA has officially stated that there is no scientific evidence supporting these claims and that its use can have serious side effects. Manufacturers are not allowed to make any medicinal health claims for CS. Most people who want to use CS buy it from a manufacturer, but it's simple to make at home.

If you're suffering pain in your rib cage as a result of trauma, you may have damage to the ribs. Common rib related injuries include strained ribs, fractured ribs and bruised ribs. Since it's a painful condition, you'll want to diagnose bruised ribs.
Instructions
1. Consider your injury. You won't have bruised ribs if no trauma affected the area. However, if you experienced a blow to the rib cage, you may have bruised ribs.
2. Notice the way your rib area feels. If you bruised your ribs, you'll feel tenderness around the rib cage. Certain movements will feel very painful, like laughing, coughing and deep breathing.
3. Look at the appearance of the skin around your ribs. When you have bruised your ribs, you're likely to have some bruising outwardly as well.
4. Make an appointment with your doctor. If you suspect you may have bruised ribs, then you should let your doctor know your symptoms. He'll want you to come in for an examination of the rib area.
5. Undergo any testing. To rule out broken or fractured ribs, your doctor will order a chest x-ray. If the x-ray shows the bones in tact, then he'll likely diagnose you with bruised ribs and recommend the appropriate treatment.

According to Singulair.com, depression is a possible side effect of Singulair for children. Other behavioral and mood disturbances that have been reported, according to Singulair.com, are anxiety, hallucinations, irritability and suicidal behavior.
Considerations
According to a March 2008 article from USAToday.com, George Philip, the director of Singulair product development, claims that reports of suicide ideation are anecdotal. The Food and Drug Administration has not concluded that Singulair causes suicidal thoughts.
Warning
Drugs.com warns that Singulair, and all drugs, should be kept out of the reach of children. Singulair.com recommends that parents who feel that their child is experiencing side effects of Singulair consult their physician.

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease characterized by inflammation in the digestive tract. If living with ulcerative colitis, daily symptoms may include abdominal cramping and diarrhea. Oftentimes, symptoms can become severe and interfere with your life. But fortunately, there are ways to treat ulcerative colitis and resume your normal routine.
Anti-Inflammatory Medications
Ulcerative colitis doesn't respond to over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications; and these medications may intensify symptoms. To treat the condition and control symptoms, you'll need a prescription medication such as a corticosteroid. These medications suppress the immune system and stop inflammation.
Anti-Diarrheal Medications
Diarrhea is a common symptom of ulcerative colitis, in which anti-diarrheal medications such as Imodium can effectively stop loose bowel movements. In some instances, constipation can occur. If you're dealing with constipation, taking fiber supplements or a gentle laxative can stimulate intestinal contractions and promote a bowel movement.
Limit Dairy Products
Dairy products such as milk, yogurt and cheese can aggravate symptoms. Monitor your symptoms and food intake. And if symptoms worsen after eating dairy products, limit your intake or completely remove these foods from your diet. Typical symptoms include gas, abdominal pain, abdominal bloating, constipation and diarrhea. If unable to eat or drink dairy products, talk to your doctor about a calcium or vitamin D supplement.
Choose Your Beverages Wisely
Certain drinks can worsen symptoms of ulcerative colitis. Alcohol, caffeine and carbonated beverages increase gas and abdominal bloating, and they may trigger loose bowels. If you're dealing with constipation, increasing your water intake can naturally ease discomfort and produce regular bowel movements.
Reduce Stress
Dealing with anxiety or a stressful situation can intensify the symptoms of ulcerative colitis. Learn stress management techniques such as breathing exercises. Also, being active and starting an exercise routine can decrease stress and anxiety and lessen symptoms of ulcerative colitis. Other techniques include a massage to relax tense muscles, reading, resting and walking.
All children act up from time to time. Their behavior can become disruptive as an expression of grief, anger or anxiety. In those instances, the behavioral problems may go away once the underlying cause is dealt with. However, in some cases the acting out can be a sign of a condition known as oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Here are some ways to determine if a child’s behavioral problems are due to ODD.
Instructions
Identify Oppositional Defiant Disorder
1. Observe if your child's behavioral problems are continuous and last for at least six months and if the child is disruptive at home and at school. Often these children have a hard time forming and maintaining positive relationships with their peers.
2. Observe if your child is manifesting certain behaviors associated with ODD, including negativity, defiance, disobedience and hostility directed at authority figures.
3. See if your child is consistently exhibiting symptoms of ODD, including frequent temper tantrums, arguing with adults, refusing to follow the rules, blaming others, vindictiveness, aggressiveness towards peers and poor grades.
An herbal cleansing cocktail is used by many people to rid the body of built up toxins, restore good health and ensure healthy functioning of the bowel and colon. It is made from natural herbs that can have a cleansing effect on the body and begin the process of eliminating built up fecal matter and toxic materials that are the result of a poor diet and unhealthy habits.
Herbal Colon Cleansing
The herbal cleansing cocktail should begin with effectively eliminating the built up waste in the colon. The colon is the part of the body that is the very last step on the digestion and processing of foods and nutrients in the body. Healthcare providers are beginning to recognize the effects of built up toxins in the colon and how they are responsible for many of the disorders of the human body. The colon should be the first step in a body cleanse. When a cleansing product is used without cleansing the colon first, the toxins that are impacted in the colon will be recycled right back into the body. Start off with a colon cleanse and then move on to products that cleanse the liver, lymph system or blood only when it is completed.
There are a number of tea products that can be used to clean the colon with herbs. These are ready to use right out of the package and will begin the process of eliminating toxins and parasites that are impacted in the colon.
Using an Herbal Cleansing Cocktail
There are also products available on the market that combine the benefits of several herbs in one product to get the best results. Herbs, such as aloe leaf, cayenne pepper, ginger, cascara sagrada and senna, are often used to cleanse the body and restore the body's ability to cleanse on its own. Pay attention to how your body reacts to these herbal remedies and with time, you will be able to determine the right amounts of herbs to use for your body.
Visiting an Herbalist
An herbalist will be able to help determine the correct herbal cleansing cocktail that is right for you. Some herbs can be dangerous when they are used in large quantities in an incorrect way. While the products that you find in the stores sold as herbal cleansing cocktails are perfectly safe, an herbalist can point you in the right direction for making these cocktails on your own.
High Fiber Diet
Along with an herbal cleansing cocktail, it is important to follow a high fiber diet and eat more raw fruits and vegetables to keep the colon and digestive system healthy. Eating a diet that is high in fiber will ensure that the colon remains clean and healthy for far longer after the cleansing treatment than it would if you returned to your pre-cleansing diet.

Excessive menstrual bleeding can be caused by a number of conditions. The exact herbs that help will depend on the overall diagnosis. Chinese medicine treats the chi, the natural life force that is present in every living thing. The chi can both cause physical ailments and be symptomatic of the ailment. The chi can also be unbalanced. In some cases, the balance between yin and yang is upset. In other cases, chi can become too cool, cold, warm or hot. Herbs are often used to treat these and many other conditions. Because each case is unique, it is always best to consult a traditional Chinese medical practitioner before trying herbs.
Angelica Root
Chinese angelica root has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for over 5,000 years. Angelica root is a general tonic herb that often has positive effects on the reproductive system. This herb balances hormones and can help to relieve premenstrual (PMS) symptoms.
Raspberry Tea
Raspberry tea contains astringents that tend to shrink tissues in the body. It is often prescribed for excessive menstrual bleeding and cramps.
Cayenne Pepper
Cayenne pepper is a circulatory system tonic that helps the elasticity and health of veins, arteries and capillaries. By helping to keep blood-vessel walls pliable, cayenne pepper can help reduce excessive menstrual bleeding. It can also help to reduce menstrual cramps.
Radix Notoginseng
Radix notoginseng is sometimes called chi ginseng. It has been used for hundreds of years to treat excessive bleeding. It is specifically indicated as a cure for excessive menstrual bleeding and menorrhagia.
Juga Forrestii Diels
Although juga forrestii deils is often used to treat traumatic swelling and injuries, it is often very useful for helping to treat heavy menstrual flows. It can also be effective in relieving menstrual cramps and pain.
Rhizoma Dioscoreae Nipponicae
Rhizoma dioscoreae nipponicae is often prescribed to stop internal bleeding, to improve circulation and to treat general gynecological disorders. Of all the herbs in Chinese medicine, this is the most frequently prescribed herb for gynecological disorders.
Rhizome Dioscoreae
Rhizone dioscorea is a type of wheat that contains high quantities of B vitamins. It also contains vitamin A and can be very effective in treating menstrual cramps. It is also sometimes prescribed to treat excessive menstrual bleeding.
Rotator cuff problems are a serious issue that can become very complicated to treat if not noticed properly. The rotator cuff in the shoulder can actually tear if symptoms are ignored. You should know recognize the symptoms of rotator cuff problems in order to minimize localized damage.
Instructions
1. Find out what activities are causing your pain. If you feel pain in your shoulder when you use your arm, see a doctor. You may only notice pain and irritation when trying to reach above your head to get something off a high shelf.
2. Notice if one shoulder feels weaker than the other. Rotator cuff problems can decrease the strength available to support your arm. You'll notice if you have trouble lifting things with a specific arm or if you feel pain while lifting things.
3. See if you are experiencing pain while lying in bed. Some people with damaged rotator cuffs recognize sleeping problems while lying on the side with the injured shoulder. If you wake up with pain in your shoulder, it is a good indicator of rotator cuff problems.
4. Remember if you've ever had any problems with tendonitis in your shoulder. Sometimes a flare-up of tendonitis can swell the tendons so much that the rotator cuff doesn't have the room it needs to flex around.
5. See your doctor right away if your experience constant pain in your shoulder, especially after any kind of accident. Constant pain is a good warning sign that your rotator cuff may be tearing and the cuff cannot heal itself once torn.

If you want to make sure you are eating healthy you must get the appropriate servings of the four major food groups in to your body. One of those groups is the meat group. Meat is the best food for building up your body and for repairing it when needed. Each human being is suggested to take in 2 or more servings of meat per day. Here are some great ways to the daily recommended allowance of meat.
Instructions
1. Identify what is a meat. Since we now know we need two or more servings of meat per day we need to find out what foods are in the meat group. You can probably figure out that chicken, turkey, pork, venison, and meats that come from cows are included in this category. What you may not realize is that eggs, fish, and beans also belong in the meat category.
2. The importance of changing up what you eat from day to day. Meats in general are high in fat. You don't want to solely rely on animal meats for your servings each day. Consider switching up your meats with eggs, fish, and beans. Eggs have a lot of cholesterol which we all know clogs the blood. Fish is lower in fat than meat, but doesn't build up your blood as well as animal meats. Beans are the same as fish in that they are not good at building up your blood. You see each of these foods has a strength and a weakness. That is why it is important not to eat the same meat day in and day out. Your body really requires a variety in order to stay it's healthiest.
3. Create a weekly menu. This is when you want to get out your local supermarket flyers, paper, and a pen. Take a look at your meat circular to see what is on sale for the week. If ground beef is on sale, plan one night of meatloaf. If you can get two bags of beans for $1.00, plan one night for a bean burrito. If you can get a turkey, you can use the leftovers from dinner to make a turkey sandwich for lunch the next day. Make sure you have 2 meats on your list for each day and when you see what you need you can go right to the store and make your weekly purchase.
4. Make sure each day has two meats. If you have egg salad for lunch and a piece of BBQ chicken for dinner you have successfully eaten your daily allowance of meats for the day. Remember that sometimes we get our serving of meats at breakfast time. Often we have eggs and bacon or eggs and spam. That would equal our two servings right there and we should then think about having pasta for dinner (grains group). If you are planning on having salmon for dinner, when you eat your eggs for breakfast don't eat any bacon or sausage. Instead have a hash brown and a piece of fruit.
5. Be creative. There are tons of ways you can mix and match foods. The important thing is to start paying attention to how much food is going in to your body and is it balanced enough. Making the lists I spoke of earlier will help a lot. Once you decide on the meats you want for the week you can research recipes from your favorite cook book. That will help to make sure you never get bored of the foods you are eating, which will in turn keep you on the track to success.

A defibrillator can reinstate a normal heartbeat to save your life.
Defibrillators are any electronic device used to restart the heart in the event of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). In traditional hospital settings, defibrillators use paddles to deliver an electric shock to the heart muscle to reinstate normal beating. However, for patients who are at risk for recurrent SCA, there are substitutes for a hospital defibrillator that can help save lives outside of the hospital setting.
Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD)
These devices are implanted inside the body and are connected to leads that are on or in the heart muscle. The leads deliver electric shocks to pace or restart the heart's normal beating pattern. Leads are connected to a pulse generator that is installed in the chest or abdomen that detects rhythm irregularities. Today's pulse generators are small enough that many of them can be installed through blood vessels, but larger ones require open-heart surgery.
Wearable Cardioverter Defibrillator (WCD)
The wearable device is another solution for those at risk of recurrent SCA, and it does not require any invasive surgery. This device is a vest that is worn underneath the clothing. It has an electrode belt that has cardiac monitoring electrodes and therapy electrodes that deliver the necessary shocks. Users must wear a connected monitor that has a battery pack and an alarm device on their belt.
Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
These devices are the most similar to those in a traditional hospital setting and are most commonly found in commercial settings, such as on aircraft, in case of emergencies. However, there are also at-home versions that individuals can purchase. These devices need to be operated by another individual because like the traditional paddle model, they must place electrodes on the body to deliver a shock. This device is not recommended for those who are at risk for recurrent SCA.

For some people, dieting and exercise never work. They remain obese even after years of trying to lose weight. But obesity is associated with a host of ills, including high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. It can also be a source of low self-esteem and depression. So for people who feel they'll never be able to get to a normal weight on their own, surgical weight loss, known as a bariatric procedure, can be an attractive option.
The Basics
Bariatric procedures involve altering your stomach so that calorie intake is limited. Several different procedures are available, each with different risks, benefits and requirements. Generally, a doctor may feel you're a good candidate for an operation if you meet any of these criteria:
-You're at least 100 pounds overweight or your body-mass index is 40 or higher.
-Your body-mass index is 35 or higher and you have a coexisting, obesity-related medical condition.
-You've made serious attempts at losing weight but have failed. By serious, doctors mean, for example, techniques such as behavior modification, a diet prescribed by a physician, behavior modification and groups such as Weight Watchers.
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass involves bypassing the majority of the stomach, along with the initial two feet or so of the small intestine. After surgery your stomach will feel full much more rapidly, owing to its reduced size. Additionally, calorie absorption is reduced because the food is in contact with the small intestine for a shorter period.
There are a couple of variations available for this surgery. It can be done laparoscopically, with as many as a half-dozen small incisions rather than one large incision. Long, thin tubes are used to guide tools into place through the incisions. The idea is to create less scarring, less pain and a quicker recovery.
A procedure called distal gastric bypass is sometimes performed on patients more than 200 pounds overweight. Essentially, a larger portion of the small intestine is bypassed. This procedure increases the risk of nutritional complications.
Biliopancreatic Diversion
In biliopancreatic diversion, a surgeon reduces capacity of the stomach by a modest amount and performs a more extreme bypass than in the Roux-en-Y procedure. This operation is for the heaviest people, and is increasingly popular. Like distal gastric bypass, biliopancreatic diversion can cause the patient to have trouble getting adequate nutrition.
Adjustable Gastric Band
A surgeon can install an adjustable gastric band to limit a patient's caloric intake. It's an inflatable band that forms a circle around the stomach and can be adjusted as the patient's needs change. Since it does not involve changing the small intestine, it doesn't carry a high risk of nutritional deficiencies. However, weight loss is less than in the other procedures, so it's often recommended for patients whose obesity is not as severe. It is the bariatric procedure with the least surgical risk.
Gastroplasty
Gastroplasty is also known as stomach-stapling surgery. With staples and a band, a surgeon fashions a small pouch from the upper portion of the stomach, with an approximately 1 cm hole at its bottom. This restricts the passage of food into the lower part of the stomach and the intestines. This procedure is losing popularity as surgeons and patients choose procedures involving a gastric bypass component, leading to more effecting and lasting weight loss, or an adjustable gastric band, leading to fewer complications.
Both nightmares and night terrors can be terrifying. Both may disturb sleeping patterns and cause insomnia in children and adults. Since nightmares and night terrors have a lot of similarities, it might be difficult to determine which you are experiencing; however, there are differences between the two. No matter what they are defined as, if they are intense or disturbing sleeping patterns you should seek the advice of a physician or psychologist.
Duration
Night terrors do not last very long, anywhere between five to 25 minutes. There is no specific time range that a nightmare lasts. Nightmares could technically go on as long as the REM sleep cycle lasts.
Sleep Stages
Nightmares occur at the same time dreams do. Nightmares are technically the same thing as dreaming. They can only occur in the REM sleep stage, or rapid eye movement stage. Rapid eye movement happens when people are in their deepest stage of sleep, and occurs approximately 90 minutes after they fall asleep. Night terrors occur before the REM sleep stage, usually around the fourth sleep stage, which is the stage transitioning from the deepest sleep of a non-REM stage to the REM stage. This stage of transitioning usually occurs within the first hour of sleep but can occur as late as three hours into sleeping.
Symptoms
Night terrors usually cause sudden awakening. During a night terror the sufferer may experience screaming, thrashing, sweating, confusion and rapid heart rate. Conversely, during a nightmare there is not much movement besides slight whimpering and tearing up. Upon waking, a person who experienced a night terror will usually not remember what happened but will feel fear and confusion. If the person does remember the night terror, it will only be a memory of brief or startling images. Nightmares are usually remembered in the morning upon natural waking. The memories of the nightmare are usually vivid and may be remembered as a movie-length story.
Sufferers
Anyone can experience nightmares and almost everyone does. Night terrors, on the other hand, are generally experienced more often by children, males, those suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and by those who also experience sleep walking and sleep talking. Children who get night terrors usually stop having them after puberty and adults who have them usually are suffering from stress.
Causes
There is not much known about what causes either nightmares or night terrors. Nightmares can be caused by a variety of things as simple as what movies were watched or what was read before sleep. Possible causes of night terrors include PTSD, stress, being unable to make a smooth transition to REM, an overactive central nervous system during sleep, medication and possibly genetics.

Articles of Incorporation create a corporate business entity.
Businesses have different structures for different reasons. In many cases, a business is structured a certain way so that owners can take advantage of certain benefits such as tax shelters or personal liability protection. Professional corporations and limited liability companies are popular business structures. Depending on the size of the business, the type of business and the tax implications of the business, one business structure may be more appropriate than another. Many factors must be considered before structuring a business a certain way.
Limited Liability Company
A limited liability company, also known as an LLC, is a business ownership structure that has similar characteristics of a corporation as well as a partnership. Limited liability company owners are called its members. The members of a limited liability company must be on file with the secretary of state in which the LLC was formed. An LLC's owners are not personally liable for the debts and actions of their company.
Forming an LLC is straightforward and requires a trip to the secretary of state's office. You can also form an LLC on-line in some cases. The "Articles of Organization" are what describe the LLC as a separate entity from its owners. There are single-member limited liability companies as well as LLCs that have several members.
Professional Corporation
A professional corporation is a business structure for business owners that have a professional designation such as a doctor, chiropractor, dentist or lawyer. Similar to a limited liability company, individual states regulate what type of professional is free to form professional corporations within their state. Corporations are owned by their shareholders. A professional corporate structure protects shareholders from the libelous actions of others, however, it does not protect the professional from the liability that may result from malpractice or other negligent behavior. Corporations must formulate corporate by-laws that determine how the business will operate.
Advantages
The advantages of both a professional corporation and a limited liability company is that they both provide a level of protection against liability for their shareholders and members. Because the businesses are structured as separate legal entities, the business owners are not held liable for the debts and actions of the business. Corporations have the opportunity to sell stock in order to raise additional capital. Limited liability companies offer more flexibility and ease of management than a corporation. LLCs are not required to have by-laws and are not subject to the state and federal regulations that corporations are.
Disadvantages
Forming a corporation can be expensive and time consuming. Unfortunately for professionals, in order to operate their business in some states, they are required to form professional corporations. Corporations are often subject to higher taxes overall than limited liability companies. Limited liability companies have the benefit of choosing the entity through which they will file their taxes.
Considerations
The type of ownership structure a business-person chooses to operate under has long-term affects on the livelihood of the business. Considering which business structure is most appropriate depends on a variety of factors and should be thoroughly discussed with an attorney who specializes in forming businesses as well as tax professionals that can offer the most solid advice for your situation.

Epilepsy is a central nervous system disorder in which electrical signals in the brain become overactive. As a result, people with epilepsy experience seizures or convulsions, and some people lose consciousness. Epilepsy typically develops in early childhood. However, the condition can surface at any age. There isn't a way to prevent epilepsy. However, sufferers can control their symptoms and reduce their chances of having a seizure.
Instructions
1. Get enough rest. Sleep deprivation and being overly tired can trigger epilepsy. To control symptoms and prevent a seizure, sleep at least 6 to 8 hours a night. Listen to your body, and schedule a few minutes of downtime each day.
2. Eat a special diet. A low-carb and high-fat/protein diet has been proven to reduce seizures in people with epilepsy. A low-carb diet involves eating less than 30 grams of carbohydrates a day. Carbohydrates include pasta, bread, beans and certain fruits.
3. Exercise regularly. Eating a high-fat diet isn't healthy, and it can increase your chances of developing certain cancers and heart disease. Thus, regular exercise is essential to maintaining your health. In addition, exercise can reduce the frequency of seizures. Doctors encourage people with epilepsy to workout for a minimum of 90 minutes every week.
4. Learn manage stress. Worry and stressful situations can trigger epilepsy seizures. While there isn't a way to completely eliminate stress from your life, you can learn stress management tips. These include eating healthy, taking a nap, taking a warm bath, spending time with friends, finding a hobby and getting a massage.
5. Take your medication. Doctors often prescribe anti-seizure medications to persons with epilepsy. To prevent a seizure, it's important to take your medication as directed by your physician. Talk with your doctor before stopping your medication or switching to herbal remedies.

According to the Mayo Clinic, 23,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year, and over 15,000 die from this type of cancer annually. Unfortunately, over three-fourths of the women who develop the disease won't be diagnosed until the cancer reaches the abdomen. There are a variety of treatments available, but most patients will undergo combinations of treatments.
Laparoscopy
A laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that doctors may perform to obtain a sample of the ovarian tumors for biopsy in addition to a diagnosis from a CT scan of the abdomen. Some doctors will use a laparoscopy to determine whether the cancer cells have spread or returned over the course of or after treatment.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is the administration of powerful radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors, and is usually the first step of treatment once the presence of cancer has been confirmed. Most chemotherapy consists of six sessions scheduled every three to four weeks.
Hysterectomy
A hysterectomy--removal of the ovaries, uterus and fallopian tubes--is one of the steps in treating ovarian cancer. Nearby lymph nodes and the omentum, a fold of fatty issue, are usually also removed because these are some of the first sites cancer travels to. Hysterectomies usually are not done until after the first round of chemotherapy so that most of the cancer cells have been eradicated before tissue removal.
Radiotherapy
Radiotherapy, or radiation therapy, administers a beam of high energy X-rays to destroy cancer cells. This is usually administered in conjunction with chemotherapy and not typically prescribed to patients unless they have Stage 3 or 4 cancer.
Clinical Trial Drugs
Some patients are eligible to participate in clinical drug trials, where they are administered either a cancer-fighting drug or a placebo drug in order for researchers to study the effectiveness of the trial drug.
Blood cancer is a form of cancer occurring in the cells of the blood as well as the bone marrow. One of the most common forms of blood cancer is leukemia, which is characterized by uncontrolled and abnormal proliferation of blood cells. Leukemia can occur at any age, and if left unnoticed and untreated for a long time, it can lead to death. Other common forms of blood cancer include multiple myeloma and lymphoma. Multiple myeloma is a form of blood cancer that generally originates in the plasma cells in the bone marrow, while lymphoma is originates in the lymphocytes, which are a major constituent of the immune system.
Causes of Leukemia
According to the staff of the Mayo Clinic, factors such as genetic recombinations, exposure to radiation and chemicals such as benzene, and microorganisms such as viruses (human T-lymphotropic virus) among others play a major role in the development of leukemia. These agents generally result in mutations or changes in DNA, causing abnormal functioning of blood cells.
Easy Bruising
Two of the most common symptoms associated with blood cancer are easy bruising and uncontrolled bleeding. In blood cancer, normal blood cells are replaced by abnormal, immature white blood cells. As a result, blood platelets are displaced. Blood platelets play a significant role in the blood clotting process, so the reduction in their number results in easy bruising and uncontrollable bleeding.
Anemia and Tiredness
Anemia also is one of the most common symptoms associated with blood cancer. Red blood cells supply oxygen to the body through the blood. Leukemia lowers the numbers of these cells, which leads to anemia. Because of this condition, patients often complain of tiredness and weakness even while sitting idle.
Frequent Infections
White blood cells help to fight infections. In leukemia, functional white blood cells are reduced in number, so patients often experience frequent and repeated infections caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi.
Other Common Symptoms
Various other common symptoms of leukemia as well as multiple myeloma and lymphoma include loss of appetite, uncontrolled weight loss, excessive sweating that is worse at night, high fever and bone and joint pain.

Mountain climbers should be careful not to reach elevations that could be hazardous to their health.
High altitudes have thinner air and a lower atmospheric pressure compared to sea level. High altitudes can affect the human body in a variety of ways -- especially if you normally live around sea level. According to the National Institutes of Health, approximately 20 percent of people will develop mild symptoms in elevations between 6,300 and 9,700 feet. Almost everyone will experience some health ailment above 14,000 feet. Effects of high altitudes include mountain sickness, cerebral hypoxia, pulmonary edema and decreased cardiac output.
Mountain Sickness
Mountain sickness encompasses a variety of symptoms caused from reduced air pressure and lower levels of oxygen. Symptoms include difficulty sleeping, dizziness, fatigue, headache, rapid pulse and nausea, to name a few. Mountain sickness is generally mild and can be relieved by descending to lower altitudes. Severe mountain sickness is less common and may cause a blueish discoloration of the skin, chronic cough, decreased consciousness and chest tightness or congestion.
Cerebral Hypoxia
Cerebral hypoxia occurs when the brain does not receive enough oxygen to function properly. Cerebral hypoxia is a serious condition because brain cells are sensitive to a lack of oxygen. According to the National Institutes of Health, some brain cells start to die in less than five minutes after being denied an adequate supply of oxygen. Left untreated, cerebral hypoxia can rapidly cause severe brain damage or death. Symptoms of early stage cerebral hypoxia include inattentiveness, poor judgment and uncoordinated movement.
High Altitude Pulmonary Edema
High altitude pulmonary edema occurs when tiny sac in the lungs, known as alveoli, fill up with fluids instead of oxygen. Pulmonary edema is commonly a result of heart conditions, but can occur in higher elevations because of increased pressure on the arteries and capillaries --- causing them to leak. According to MayoClinic.com, high altitude pulmonary edema tends to occur at elevations above 8,000 feet. Symptoms of pulmonary edema include extreme shortness of breath, wheezing, excessive sweating, chest pain and an irregular, rapid heartbeat.
Decreased Cardiac Output
Exposure to thin air at higher elevation decreases cardiac output because your body is not able to absorb as much oxygen. This makes it hard for people to physically push themselves as hard as they could at sea level. However, according to Sportsci.org, the human body compensates for thinner air by producing more oxygen-absorbing red blood cells after a few weeks of living at high elevations.
