Techniques On Calm Down

Exercising, yoga or counting to 10 can also help you calm down.

Stress causes chemical and hormonal changes in the body that can make you feel tense or anxious. Although these changes prepare the body for the "fight or flight" response, you may find it difficult to return to a relaxed state. Persistent stress can lead to serious health problems. As such, it is important to incorporate and practice techniques that can help you calm down when faced with a stressful situation or event.

Meditation

When you are upset, stressed or angry, you may have several thoughts running through your head that can intensify or prolong these feelings. Meditating is a great way to calm down because it focuses and stills the mind. According to the Mayo Clinic, even a few minutes of meditation can create a sense of calm, relaxation and inner peace. Mediating provides clarity and it can be performed anywhere and at any time by breathing slowly and focusing on quieting the mind and clearing away all thoughts.

Deep Breathing

Focusing on your breathing with deep breaths not only diverts your attention away from stressful situations, but helps you to calm down because it can relax the body and slow the heart rate. In order to benefit from deep breathing, you must breathe from the diaphragm and not the chest. To ensure that you are using the diaphragm, place your hands on your stomach and as you inhale, it should expand out. Exhale by pulling the stomach tight toward the spine.

Walking

Walking is another way to calm down. It physically removes you from stressful events, allowing you to get fresh air, which can help clear the mind. Walking also relieves tension from the body through the release of endorphins -- hormones that create a sense of relaxation. Walking can also acts as a form of meditation. When using walking as a way to meditate, be mindful of each step, paying attention to the movement of the legs, ankles and feet.

Visualizations

Since the body and mind are connected, visualizations provide a good way to relax or calm down. Visualizations work because they can mentally prepare you for or take you away from a stressful event. In order to create a mental picture, find a quiet place and take a few deep breaths until you feel relaxed. Use your mind to create a mental image of a place that makes you feel at ease, such as a beach, park or library and imagine that you are there. You can also use visualizations to relive a peaceful and happy memory in order to calm down.

What Are The Treatments For Muscle Cramps & Restless Legs

Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a sleep disorder characterized by uncomfortable sensations in the legs, uncontrollable leg movement and muscle pain. There are a variety of treatment options available for RLS, some of which include prescription and over-the-counter medications and general lifestyle modifications.

Prevalence

While the exact numbers aren't known, restless leg syndrome is thought to occur at a rate of about 5.5 percent among the general population, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Causes

In many cases, RLS is caused by an underlying health condition. Identifying and treating the primary cause of RLS can greatly improve symptoms. According to Medline Plus, common causes of RLS include diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, kidney disease and Parkinson's disease.

Prescription Medications

Dopaminergic agents like the anti-Parkinson's drug ropinirole are often prescribed as a first line of treatment for restless legs. In more severe cases, drugs from the benzodiazepine and opiate families may be given for their muscle relaxing and painkilling properties. Anticonvulsants like gabapentin are sometimes effective in reducing the sensory disturbances associated with RLS.

Herbal and Nutritional Supplements

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, nutritional supplements like calcium and magnesium may help treat underlying deficiencies that can aggravate RLS. Herbal supplements with muscle-relaxing properties--such as valerian root or passionflower--may also help relieve muscle tension and general restlessness.

Lifestyle Modifications

Healthy lifestyle changes can play an important role in easing RLS and muscle cramps. Decreasing caffeine, tobacco and alcohol intake can help prevent symptoms, while use of hot baths and other relaxing activities can relieve symptoms once they've set in. Establishing a regular sleeping pattern and exercising frequently may also help.

Reasons For Testing The Ph Of Beverages

Soda

A correct balance of pH (potential hydrogen) in the body is crucial to good health. pH is the measure of acidity or alkalinity and many outside factors can influence whether a body is neutral, more acidic or more alkaline. Monitoring pH levels in beverages is important because imbalanced drinks can lead to tooth decay, an exposure to metallic chemicals and a weakening of the immune system.

Low pH can lead to tooth decay

Bad Teeth

Doctors and professionals have warned for decades of the adverse affects drinking sugary beverages has on human teeth. Drinks with lower pH levels are more corrosive on human teeth, eroding enamel and weakening the general structure. According to a 2007 article on LiveScience.com, water, which is seen as a safe beverage, has a pH level of 7.6 while juices have lower pH levels and colas have levels as low as 2.5, meaning they are very acidic, due to not only citric acids but also high levels of phosphoric acids. If you can't find pH levels on product labels you can pay less than $10 for litmus paper which will indicate the pH levels.

Low pH can Lead to Metallic Contamination

Aluminum cans

In addition to eroding your teeth, beverages with low pH levels can erode the insides of metallic containers and lead to aluminum and other forms of metallic poisoning. According to Marijan Seruga and Damir Hasenay of the Faculty of Food Technology, "Because soft drinks are relatively acidic media, there is a possibility that due to leaching (corrosion) [aluminum] from the can wall, some migration of [aluminum] into soft drinks occurs." And excess aluminum in the body can lead to, according to the NYU Langone Medical Center, anemia, dementia and muscle weakness.

Low pH can Weaken your Immune System

Immune System

In addition to the corrosive effects of acidic beverages, a low pH in energy drinks and sodas or any consumable liquid could disrupt the delicate pH balance in the human body. Normally the body functions with a pH level around 7, but if you do not check the pH levels of beverages you consistently consume, and the levels are very low, your body may begin to shift toward a more acidic system, and higher acid levels cause more stress on your body, weaken your immune system and open the door to disease and infection.

Deal With Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are blood-sucking tiny insects of the family Cimicidae that are without wings and bite humans. They can live in furniture, in cracks and crevices and in bed mattresses and box springs. Recently, bed bugs are making a resurgence, probably due to the banning of pesticides like DDT that were used to kill them. Because they are small, bed bugs are easily unknowingly transported from place to place via clothing and can survive for several months without food.

Instructions

Treatment

1. Spread diatomaceous earth around areas of bed bug infestation. Dust the floor around the bed or furniture legs. Sprinkle a small amount under the mattress as well.

2. Spray infested materials with an enzyme solution like Kleen Free. Spray directly on bedding, clothing, furniture, carpet or flooring.

3. Spray bedding and flooring with the natural oil-based spray called Rest Easy to repel bed bugs.

4. Hire a professional exterminator to fumigate the entire house with the chemical Vikane.

Rheumatoid Arthritis And Skeletal System Disorders

The Arthritis Foundation says rheumatoid arthritis (RA) affects 1.3 million people, causing pain and stiffness and possible damage to the bone and ligaments of the affected joints.

Definition

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease which typically affects the smaller joints of the body, like the hand or wrists. There is no known cause or cure, and the Arthritis Foundation says it may actually be several different diseases, which share a common set of symptoms.

Effects

In RA, the body's immune system attacks the synovial membranes of the joints, causing damage to the membranes as well as the ligaments, bone, and cartilage in the joint.

Cartilage and Ligament Damage

RA can cause damage to the ligaments and cartilage due to the constant swelling and destruction of the synovial membranes.

Bone Loss

Without healthy synovial membranes, ligaments and cartilage, damage to the bone structures is certain. The bones are no longer cushioned or protected, meaning bone-on-bone contact. Inflammation also contributes to the damage.

Deformed Joints

With damaged or destroyed bone and tissue, the joints gradually take on a gnarled, deformed appearance. This deformation limits movement, making everyday tasks like grasping a doorknob or buttoning a shirt difficult.

Options

There are several surgical options available to remedy the damage caused by RA, including fusions, synovectomies, and joint replacement. RA patients should discuss the options with a rheumatologist.

Identify Symptoms Of Learning Disabilities

Learning disabilities can be devastating to children and their families. The disability is often mistaken for laziness, and a child is mistakenly considered unwilling to pay attention in class. A learning disability is sometimes difficult to diagnose and treat. If the problem is recognized in the early stages, it can be treated more effectively. Identifying symptoms of learning disabilities will help any parent assist his child in doing better at school and gaining the basic knowledge needed for a successful life.

Instructions

1. Watch for motor skill problems. You may notice your child having difficulties putting numbers or letters in order. He may be having trouble organizing his room or toys. Poor coordination could be a problem, such as when crawling, walking or catching a ball.

2. Look for signs of developmental skills. Your child may have trouble speaking or reading. When you ask him a question, he pause for a while before giving you an answer. Reading, talking and coloring may not interest the child at all.

3. Watch your child’s homework or interaction while learning. He may seem slow to pick up new skills. Your child may show no interest in anything that involves learning. This can include reading, math, building blocks, or even playing with his imagination.

4. Check his emotional levels. Your child may seem angry, depressed or sad for absolutely no reason at all. He could be acting out in class, talking to other children while the teacher is talking or not paying attention. Strong mood swings also signal the possiblity of a learning disability.

5. Watch for elevated confusion. Your child could misplace books, homework or toys. He may not be able to memorize well for his grade level. Numbers and letters are written backwards. This will be a clear sign of a problem.

Remedies For Nausea In Cancer Patients

Going through cancer treatment is no easy task, especially chemotherapy. It can cause numerous side effects, one of which is nausea or vomiting. At a time when your body needs as many nutrients as it can get, it can be frustrating to feel nauseous all the time. Fortunately, there are several ways to stave off chemo-related nausea.

Start With Small Meals

Avoid eating right before a chemotherapy treatment. This can reduce feelings of nausea at the outset. When you do decide to eat, make your meals small and space them out over the course of the day. Eat several small meals rather than three big ones. Eat healthy foods, but those that you enjoy. Steer clear of very sweet, fatty or oily foods as they can upset your stomach.

Avoid Bad Odors

Being around things that smell bad can cause nausea and vomiting following a chemotherapy treatment. Strong odors in general may be enough to trigger nausea. Even the smell of foods you normally enjoy cooking can be a turn-off. To stave off nausea, try to avoid being in situations where you'll be exposed to foul smells. If you must cook, stick to bland, less odorous ingredients.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water can help to eliminate the urge to vomit. It's best not to gulp it down, however. Instead, drink cool juices, teas, water and ginger ale slowly. Sip it throughout the day to calm an upset stomach. At the very least, you'll prevent dehydration if you do vomit.

Use Ginger

Ginger is great for reducing nausea. You can chew fresh ginger root, eat ginger candy, drink ginger ale, eat gingersnaps or even use it in your normal cooking. It helps to quell nausea and can be added to just about anything for a soothing affect on your stomach.

Safe Medications During Pregnancy

While no medications are absolutely guaranteed to be safe during pregnancy, some medications are better choices than others. Many OB/GYNs and women's health care providers, as well as medical websites such as one linked below, have a list of over-the-counter medications that are considered reasonably safe for pregnant women. Women who are pregnant, or think they might be pregnant, should always check with their doctors before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications, as well as herbal or all-natural remedies.

Identification

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) categorizes over-the-counter and prescription medications as class A, B, C, D or X, depending on their proven safety during pregnancy. Only medications that have been proven safe in a sufficient number of human studies are rated Class A. Those that have been proven safe in animal studies, but not human studies, are Class B. Medications that have shown potential harm in animal studies are Class C. Medications listed as Class D are known to increase the risk of birth defects or complications, but may still be necessary for some women. Class X medications should not be used during pregnancy.

Time Frame

Since some medications can cause harm if a woman takes them before she finds out that she is pregnant, a woman who might become pregnant should avoid taking any medications without a doctor's approval. Early pregnancy is a time of important development when all of the baby's major organ systems are forming, making it especially vulnerable to medications. Many medications have a different FDA class in early pregnancy than they do in late pregnancy.

Types

Most doctors recommend that all pregnant women take prenatal vitamins, which are available over-the-counter or by prescription. Prenatal supplements that include Omega-3 fatty acids derived from fish oil should be mercury-free for safety. For allergies and rashes, Benadryl pills or creams are considered a safe choice. Even though Benadryl is FDA Class B, it has been used without evidence of harmful affects for many decades. For colds, doctors may recommend medications such as Sudafed and Robitussin, as well as throat sprays such as Chloraseptic, or natural remedies like gargling with salt water or taking a steamy shower. Most doctors also consider antacid tablets and fiber supplements safe for relieving pregnant women's digestive symptoms.

Size

Pregnant women who take over-the-counter or prescription medications need to be especially carefully to follow the dosing instructions. Many medications include how much medication patients should take at each dose, the maximum number of doses within 24 hours, and length of time patients can continue taking the medication. Pregnant women who find that they need to take more of the medication, or take it for longer than recommended, should always seek a doctor's approval first. Some doctors may only allow pregnant women to use medications, such as over-the-counter diarrhea remedies, for one day. If the problem persists, the doctor may want to see pregnant patients to make sure they are not getting dehydrated or suffering from a serious infection that could harm the baby.

Considerations

Pregnant women need to pay extra attention to medication labels to make sure that they know exactly what they sre taking. For example, versions of Benadryl designed to treat sinus headaches or colds may contain acetaminophen and phenylephrine as well as the basic antihistamine. Decongestant or long-lasting versions of cold medications can also include additional drugs that aren't on the list of safe medications. When in doubt, pregnant women should check with their doctor's office before taking the medications. Many OB/GYNs have a phone nurse who can answer such questions, without waiting for an appointment.

Do Plank Exercises

Plank exercises are one of the best moves to strengthen your core, which comprises not only your abdominal muscles, but also the muscles of the back, hips, and pelvic floor. Strengthening these muscles won't give you six pack abs, but will give you stability in your trunk and spine, helping to prevent many injuries and giving you better posture overall.

Instructions

1. Start by lying face down on a mat. Place your forearms on the mat with your shoulders aligned directly over your elbows. Clasp your hands in front of you.

2. Extend your legs behind you and rest on your toes, as if you are going to do a pushup. Your hips should not be lifted to the ceiling, nor should your back be arched. You should look to attain a straight line between your shoulders and toes.

3. Tighten your abdominal muscles to help you hold the position correctly, and hold it as long as you can. When you begin to feel your lower back start to sag from fatigue, take a break, then get back into the proper position and hold the move once again.

4. Breathe evenly throughout the move. It's an easy mistake to try and hold your breath during the exertion, but it'll actually be easier if you focus on breathing evenly. Doing so sends vital oxygen to your muscles and helps them stay strong longer.

5. Feel your abdominal muscles working and getting fatigued as you hold the position. Challenge yourself to hold the position a little longer with each workout, and work toward holding it for 60 to 90 seconds at a time.

6. Make the move more challenging as you gain strength by lifting one leg at a time behind you. Inhale as you lift the leg, and exhale as you lower.

What Is Nutramigen Made From

If you're a new mother, you've probably heard something about Nutramigen. Not that every infant will need this type of product, especially if she doesn't suffer from a sensitivity to milk- or soy-based formulas. But if you have a child with these sorts of allergies, you may have taken a serious look at Nutramigen.

Significance

Since Nutramigen comes in various forms (powder, concentrate and premixed), the actual makeup of the product will vary slightly. In powder form, you'll find the mixture made up of predominately (46 percent total) corn syrup solids, which are basically sugars produced through the dehydration of liquid corn syrup. The process of dehydration is initiated by introducing sulfur dioxide and other chemicals to the corn syrup. After corn syrup solids, the next ingredient is vegetable oil, coming in at about 25 percent and consisting of a mixture of palm, coconut, soy and sunflower oils. From there you'll find casein hydrolysate (essentially protein-reduced cow's milk) at 17 percent and modified corn starch at 7 percent. The rest of the ingredients come in at less than 2 percent of the composition and consist mostly of vitamins (A, D3, E, K1, B6 and B12).

Features

The concentrated form of Nutramigen has basically the same ingredients, just in different levels. Seventy-five percent of the concentrate will be made up of water. After water, you'll again have corn syrup solids, but this time coming in at only 10 percent. The amount of vegetable oil, casein hydrolysate and modified corn starch will all have been reduced to 7, 4 and 3 percent of the makeup, respectively. The rest of the product will be the same vitamins, minerals and other components as the powder formula, just in fewer amounts (only 1 percent or less).

Size

The premixed, or ready-to-use, variety will also have the same ingredients as the powder and the concentrate, but will vary in makeup depending on the size of the container. The 32- and 6-oz bottles will have 87 percent of the product made with water. All other ingredients will have been reduced with corn syrup solids at 5 percent, vegetable oil at 3 percent and both casein hydrolysate and modified corn starch at 2 percent. The rest of the ingredients will come in at less than 1 percent. For the 2-oz size, you'll find it consisting of 85 percent water, 6 percent corn syrup solids, 3 percent vegetable oil and 2 percent of both casein hydrolysate and modified corn starch with the rest of the ingredients again coming in at less than 1 percent each.

Effects

Typically, when an infant is placed on Nutramigen, they will experience a brief adjustment period, meaning they may not take to the formula right away. After a short time, they will begin to take it, though many times they will eat slightly less than your general formulas or breast milk, but still more than enough to be nourished.

Considerations

When deciding to put your infant on Nutramigen, or any formula for that matter, you may want to consider the nature of the product as well as consult your doctor and your pediatrician. They may have a more natural and/or organic substitute for your infant to consume on a daily basis.

Use Aromatherapy For Heartburn

Do you suffer from hearburn? Heartburn can range from mild pain to the feeling of fire in the stomach. And while there are many over-the-counter treatments as well as prescription drugs available, alternative therapies can also help--including Aromatherapy.

Instructions

1. Choose 100% pure essential oils--only these offer healthful benefits. The label will state "100% pure." You can find them at health food stores and online. For heartburn, the best choices are Black Pepper, Lemon and Mandarin. Most stores have tester bottles, so take a sniff and choose two you like.

2. Make a hand massage oil. First mix the essential oil with the almond oil, which is known as a "carrier" oil, to create the massage oil. Measure several teaspoons of almond oil into the glass bottle, then add three to six drops of essential oil per teaspoon of almond oil. Massage the oil into your hands and inhale the aroma for several minutes to help relieve heartburn symptoms.

3. Make a foot-bath or hand bath. Fill a large bowl two-thirds full with very warm water, and add three to four drops of the essential oil. The warm water helps the blood vessels to dilate, and the essential oils are absorbed through the skin, which can further help heartburn symptoms. Inhale the aromas as you soak your hands or feet to get more aromatherapy benefits.

4. Use a ring burner to diffuse essential oils into the air. Small ring burners, available at health food stores and online, are usually made of porcelain or aluminum and sit over the top of a light bulb. Add a few drops of the essential oil to the burner. The heat from the bulb will slowly vaporize the oil. Check periodically and refill.

5. Keep a bottle of the essential oil in your desk or briefcase for an at work or on-the-road quick fix. You can sprinkle one to two drops on a handkerchief and inhale the oil's aroma.

High Blood Pressure Signs And Symptoms

High blood pressure is often itself a symptom of another condition, resulting from poor diet, congenital heart defects, chronic drug use or simply hypertension building up over many years. Signs of high blood pressure can develop as early as childhood, but sometimes don't appear until later in life. The American Medical Association and other organizations have identified several potential signs of high blood pressure.

The Silent Killer

Hypertension often arises without any symptoms at all, which has led doctors to dub it "the silent killer." High blood pressure can be detected with a blood pressure screening as part of an annual physical. Many drugstores also have blood pressure monitoring machines where you can check your blood pressure for free.

Headaches

High blood pressure sometimes announces itself through severe headaches that have no other apparent cause.

Nausea

Though a common symptom for many conditions, nausea may be a signal of abnormally high blood pressure.

Blurry Vision

Blurred eyesight sometimes arises in cases of dangerously high blood pressure.

Breathlessness

Patients with high blood pressure may experience shortness of breath, and tire easily when conducting normal day-to-day activities.

Treat Eczema With Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil may have antiseptic properties that help some skin conditions.

Eczema is a form of atopic dermatitis caused by an allergic reaction of the skin. Eczema is common in infants and young children and though many cases of infantile eczema resolve with age, a large number of people continue to suffer from eczema as adults. An alternative treatment that may be helpful for symptoms of eczema is tea tree oil. More research is needed to establish the analgesic and antiseptic properties of this traditional remedy.

Instructions

1. Add a few drops of pure tea tree oil to a cotton ball and dab directly onto the eczema rash. Pure tea tree oil can be too harsh for some individuals. In the case of infants, children and those with sensitive skin, do not apply tea tree oil directly to skin. Instead, add several drops to a creamy hypoallergenic moisturizer and then apply liberally to eczema-affected areas of skin. Avoid using lotions or creams made with perfumes and dyes as this could worsen eczema symptoms.

2. Infuse bath water with tea tree oil. Using tea tree oil as a bath oil helps to soothe itchy skin and relieve eczema irritation. Add one to two tablespoons of tea tree oil to warm bath water and soak for several minutes. Moisturize liberally afterwards to seal in the soothing properties of the tea tree oil bath.

3. For maximum eczema relief, apply the tea tree oil (or oil infused moisturizer) to eczema patches two to three times per day. Soak in the bath treatment one to three times per week. Not only will tea tree oil treat the dry skin and intense itch associated with eczema, it will also keep the rash from becoming infected from scratching.

Bind Your Breasts

Breast binding is the process of flattening breasts to the chest in order to conceal them or simply to create a different silhouette. It may be an expression of gender identity or used for costuming purposes. While tight breast binding creates a flatter silhouette, it can cause shortness of breath, so always bind loosely enough that you can breathe. If you experience discomfort from breast binding, remove it and bind more loosely.

Instructions

ACE Bandage Method

1. Remove all clothes from the upper part of your body.

2. Push your breasts to either side of your body, toward your armpits.

3. Tuck one end of a wide ACE bandage under your arm.

4. Wrap the bandage around your torso, flattening your breasts to your body. Do not stretch the ace bandage to its fullest extension, as this causes it to tighten around you.

5. Secure the end of the bandage with one or two safety pins.

6. Put on your clothes.

Pantyhose Method

7. Cut the legs off of a pair of control-top pantyhose, leaving a tube of fabric.

8. Remove the clothes from your upper body.

9. Pull the tube cut from the pantyhose over your head and down around your torso. The elastic from the pantyhose keeps your breasts flat.

10. Put on your clothes.

Home Remedy For Infected Ant Bites

Ants can be frustrating little bugs, they can colonize around your home and even find ways in. One of the most frustrating things about ants is their bite. While mildly harmless to those not allergic, ant bites are no stranger to infection and knowing treat them can help get rid of these itchy ailments.

Wash the Area

The first step in treating an infected ant bite is keeping the bite clean. Wash it with antibacterial soap and warm water at least three times a day. Then apply hydrogen peroxide to further disinfect the area. Again do this at least three times a day, following a good wash.

Ointment

An important step in treating an infected bite is antibiotic ointment. This will help keep bacteria away, and fight any remaining bacteria, as your bite starts to heal. Use an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment or see your doctor for a prescription. If an over-the-counter ointment does not seem to be working, you may need a prescription.

Do Not Scratch

One integral rule to treating an infected bite is to avoid itching, picking or touching the infected area around the bite. This can cause more bacteria to come into contact with the bite and lead to further infection, as well as prolong the healing process. Take an antihistamine to help alleviate the itch and reduce redness. Also apply a gauze or bandage to the bite to help stop the temptation to scratch.

Baking Soda

For a safe, immediate way to temporarily relieve itchiness associated with an infected ant bite, you can try applying a baking soda paste, which will help relieve the sting. Mix 3 to 4 tsp. of baking soda with cold water, making it into a thick paste. Apply the paste to infected stings and let dry, then rinse with cool water. This should help relieve some of the pain of an infected bite while you wait for it to heal.

Warnings

If your bite does not improve, or worsens after a few days of home treatment, make a trip to your doctor as you may need further treatment to heal the bite.

If the bite worsens and you begin to feel symptoms of illness such as fever, headache, stiff neck or vomiting, seek medical help immediately.

Call your doctor if you receive a bite to the ear, as bites to the ear are more susceptible to infection because of cartilage.

Bites in infants and babies are always more dangerous, as they can have a more sensitive reaction, so make sure you monitor the bite closely and call your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.

What Are Hot Stones

What Are Hot Stones?

Hot stones can be made from several types of rocks. The rocks chosen have to be able to withstand heated temperatures, whether from fire or boiling water, and have several uses. Volcanic elements can be filled with organic and healing elements, like the basalt rock. Filled with iron, the basalt rocks are used as the modern hot stones of today. In addition to hot stones being used for healing techniques, hot stone massage is a popular technique used for relaxation.

History

Stones have been used for a variety or purposes since the beginning of man, probably first used for throwing. History shows evidence of many cultures around the world heating with rocks ever since fire was first used with control, approximately 300,000 to 400,000 years ago. Hot stones have enabled people to eat hot food and have helped keep others warm on a cold night.

Soft

The smoothness of the hot stones is naturally formed. Basalt rocks, which are used as hot stones for massage, are found within rivers where the surface of the stone is naturally rubbed by the river's water current.

Warmth Supplied

Because hot stones are able to retain heat for a substantial amount of time, depending on their size, using hot stones to warm your home may initially take longer than turning on a switch but hot stones can project heat to warm up a room at no cost. The types of rocks that can be used have been mentioned, but some suitable rocks could possibly be found on the ground near your home. Once the rocks are heated, they can actually sustain heat for a longer period of time compared to some wood fires.

Cooking With Hotstones

Cooking with hot stones is a healthy way to cook foods such as meat, fish and vegetables. Stones come in many shapes and sizes for hot stone cooking and the heat held within these stones can vary. On average, a large hot stone of 3 centimeters can cook for up to 40 minutes once heated thoroughly. The stones can be kept hot by lighting candles beneath the hot plate. The best type of rocks to use as hot cooking stones are basalt, granite and larger cobbles. Cooking methods include placing the food directly on the hot rocks, burying the hot rocks in the ground with the food, and placing hot rocks inside the carcass of an animal, like a pig, to cook meat from the inside out.

Hot Stone Massage

Performed by a qualified professional for safety and professional reasons, a hot stone massage can promote relaxation and wellness within an individual receiver. First, the hot stones are heated in boiling water, usually between 120 to 160 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately 30 to 45 minutes. This heating removes any germs from the surface of the rocks prior to the hot stones being placed in the correct positions on the massage recipient's body. The hot stones are then used to gently massage beneficial areas of the body to help aid ailments and alleviate stress.

Create Mint Essential Oil

Long celebrated for its versatility, mint, both in its herbal form and as an essential oil, has many applications in health, beauty and cooking. Many moms have soothed a troubled tummy with mint tea, while modern aromatherapists believe its scent can help alleviate nausea, headaches, fatigue and anxiety. Mint oil is commercially available but many find it a far more satisfying experience to distill their own. Surprisingly, making your own mint essential oil requires little time and effort and yet can yield innumerable benefits to the overall well-being of you and your family.

Instructions

Prepare the mint plants

1. Cut the aerial portions of your mint plant, which include all the leaves and the stem, down to an inch past the bottommost leaves.

2. Tie the mint into bundles and allow it to dry in a paper bag in a cool, dry room for 48 hours. The dried or cured mint plants are called "mint hay" and should still retain a little moisture.

3. Immediately prior to distilling your mint oil, tear the mint hay into smaller pieces. This will help the oils inside the plant release more easily.

Constructing your essential oil still

4. Drill a hole the same diameter as the copper tubing into the bottom of the coffee can.

5. Place the vegetable steamer inside of the pot, then place the coffee can upside down on top of the vegetable steamer.

6. Insert one end of the copper tubing into the hole in the can and seal the edges.

7. Fill the deep bowl with ice and place it near the cooking pot. Run the rest of the copper tubing several times through the bowl of ice and over the edge of the bowl.

8. Place one of the dark glass bottles directly underneath the end of the tube, where it can catch your freshly distilled mint oil.

The distillation process

9. Place your retort on your stovetop burner. Pour enough distilled water in the pot to reach just below the bottom of the vegetable steamer.

10. Place your cured mint hay into the vegetable steamer and then replace the coffee can on top of the hay.

11. Turn the burner to medium to medium-high heat so that the water comes to a slow boil. Allow the water to boil for about 20 to 30 minutes and then turn off the burner. Most of your oil will distill during the early part of the distillation process. However, you may let the still sit undisturbed for up to two hours to finish collecting the small amount of oil that may continue to accumulate.

12. Seal your receiver bottle and store your mint essential oil in a cool, dark space such as a medicine cabinet.

What to do with the leftovers

13. In addition to the essential oil, you now have two byproducts left over from the distillation process: the used plant material and the leftover water.

14. You may either discard the used mint hay or use it as fertilizer for outdoor plants.

15. The leftover water, called hydrosol, should be poured into the plastic spray bottle. Hydrosol, available at many natural beauty supply stores, can be used as a refreshing body or room spray, as an invigorating facial toner, or as a gentle, all-natural mouth rinse.

Recovery Exercises For Post Hysterectomy Operation

Exercise after a hysterectomy will help you recover faster and feel better. It is important for stress-reduction, mood elevation, and weight control. Walking and yoga are good examples of exercises to do post-op, as are exercises like pelvic tilts, crunches, and hip hitching to recover core strength. You may need to wait several weeks to begin exercising, so consult your physician.

Cardio

Get some gentle exercise such as walking, using an elliptical trainer, and swimming after a hysterectomy. You may need to take it slow at first, but work up to 30 minutes, five to seven days a week. Wait until your physician says you are ready and limit your activity until then.

Pelvic Tilts

Pelvic tilts are a gentle exercise you can do to strengthen your abdominal muscles. Lie on your back with your knees bent. Relax your arms at your sides or cross them on your stomach. Push your lower back into the floor by tilting your pelvis up. Squeeze your abs and hold your lower back flat against the floor for three to five seconds. Do 10 reps. You can also do this exercise in bed.

Hip Hitching

Lie on your back with your head on a pillow. It is fine to lie on a bed or futon. Bend your left knee and place your left foot flat on the floor. Extend your right leg straight in front of you. Squeeze your abs. Raise your right leg up in the air and pull it as far toward your chest as you can. Hold it for three to five seconds. Return it to the floor or bed. Bend your right knee and straight your left leg. Raise your left leg and hold. Alternate until you have done at least five per leg. Work up to 10 reps per leg.

Crunches

Lie on the floor or on a mat with a pillow under your head. Cross your arms on your chest. Squeeze your abs. Crunch up until your shoulders clear the floor. Lower back to the floor at a controlled speed. Keep your ab muscles tight even as you lower toward the floor. Keep your chin lifted away from your chest and look up to the ceiling. You can start with only five reps if you like and work up to 10.

Easy Ways To Get Energy Crystals In "Final Fantasy Viii"

Energy crystals in "Final Fantasy VIII" serve a variety of purposes. Using them on your Guardian Forces will teach them the SumMag+30% ability, which increases their summon damage. Energy crystals are also an ingredient in creating powerful weapons for your characters. To easily obtain energy crystals, you can either win them from enemy battles or create them by modifying cards.

Elnoyles

The powerful Elnoyles drop energy crystals at Level 30 and above. An easy way to find an Elnoyle is to take the Ragnarok to Esther during Disc 4. Once you've landed, guide your characters down from the air station until you reach a fork in the road. Go down again and you'll arrive at an area with a moving platform. Follow the flashing arrows until you come to a set of stairs. Down the steps, there's a man who will turn into an Elnoyle if you speak to him. Win energy crystals by defeating the Elnoyle, then run off-screen and return. The man will be there again, and you can repeat the process as many times as you like.

Behemoths and Ruby Dragons

Two other enemies that routinely drop energy crystals after battles at higher levels are the Ruby Dragon and Behemoth. Both enemies will present a challenging fight. Ruby Dragons appear as random encounters on The Island Closest to Hell. It's the westernmost island on the world map, accessible only with the Ragnarok. You can find Behemoths in Esthar and the surrounding plains, and also on the Lunatic Pandora.

Card Modification

Although it's a little more time-consuming, you can modify cards to get an energy crystal without going into battle for it. After the Guardian Force Quezacotl learns the Card Mod ability, you can turn your Triple Triad cards into useful items. Ten Elnoyle cards will modify into one energy crystal. Collect Elnoyle cards by defeating Elnoyles in battle, or win them from other card players throughout the game.

Helpful Abilities

To increase your chances of acquiring an energy crystal during battle with the Elnoyle, Behemoth and Ruby Dragon, use certain abilities. The Guardian Force Tonberry has the LV Up ability, which will enable you to raise the level of the enemy you're fighting. An enemy with a higher level will be more difficult to defeat, but will also have a higher chance of dropping rare items like energy crystals. Additionally, you can use the Guardian Force Bahamut's Rare Item ability, which will increase the chances of rare drops as well.

Sleep With A Hiatal Hernia

A hiatal hernia occurs when a part of the stomach pushes through the opening at your diaphragm (where your esophagus joins your stomach). This condition can be very painful and unpleasant and it can lead to chest pain, heartburn and belching. Having a hiatal hernia may make it difficult for you to get a proper amount of sleep. However, there are a few things that you can do to help you sleep better with a hiatal hernia.

Instructions

1. Elevate the head of your bed with a sturdy item. Try placing 6-inch blocks or bricks under the legs of your bed (at the head). This elevates your head and chest and makes it more comfortable for you to sleep with a hiatal hernia. Elevating the head of your bed also prevents stomach acid from traveling up into your esophagus while you sleep.

2. Use a wedged-shaped pillow in the bed. A wedged-shaped pillow is sturdy and it provides more support than sleeping on a stack of pillows. You can move your wedged-shaped pillow around in the bed and you may even choose to move the pillow to different locations in your home (like to your sofa).

3. Install an appropriate bed elevating system. If you already have a comfortable bed and mattress, you might consider installing a Sleepcliner bed elevating system or another similar system. This type of system elevates the box spring and mattress as one unit, instead of causing you to bend at your waist. You can operate the Sleepcliner with your current bed frame or it can stand alone by itself.

4. Purchase an adjustable bed. An adjustable bed makes it really easy to switch positions by simply pushing a button. You can frequently elevate your head and chest while lying in your adjustable bed. There are a variety of styles, colors and types of adjustable beds to choose from and you are sure to find a bed to suit your needs.

5. Choose a comfortable sleeping position. If you have a hiatal hernia, it is always best to sleep on your back or side. You should avoid sleeping on your stomach or in any type of awkward position.

Alternative Medicine For Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a mental health disorder that usually occurs in young adulthood. Many non-medicinal therapies have been examined for use in schizophrenia sufferers, including gentle, non-invasive therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapies and nutritional approches.

Vitamin C Reduces Oxidation

Antioxidant therapies have been shown to be beneficial in patients with schizohrenia. Antioxidants may help to prevent free radical damage that can occur in the brain from normal metablic functioning, to which schizophrenic patients are thought to be particularly susceptible. A small, short-term study on the value of vitamin C has shown that schizophrenics who took vitamin C along with treatment medication showed better markers of blood levels of vitamin C as well as decreased levels of markers for oxidation in the brain than those who did not.

Antioxidants Help Tics and Mood

Vitamin E, Alpha-lipoic acid, and even melatonin (which is a derivative of serotonin) have also been recommended as particularly strong antioxidants for schizophrenics with some of the grotesque outward tics that can be manifestations of the illness. Additionally, seventy five percent of schizophrenics who were also taking birth control pills, and had symptoms associated with mood, were shown to be helped by taking B-6 along with their regular medication.

Omega threes can protect brain

A comprehensive paper by the American Journal of Psychiatry contends that lack of omega-3 fatty acids in the diet can lead to mental illness. A review of the literature in the Medical College of Georgia reports that the use of omega-3 fatty acids in combination with supplementation with antioxidants may be useful in protecting the sensitive biochemical pathways of those suffering from schizophrenia, whose brains may be more susceptible to oxidation, dietary imbalance, and the ravages of stress than those not suffering from the illness. Fatty fish and walnuts, among other foods, are good providers of omega-3 fatty acids. Care should be taken in the choice of fatty fish sources, as fish may contain mercury deposits.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapies

A positive critique of a research paper called the Cochrane Review suggests that therapies which integrate personal coping methods with personal support systems are essential and beneficial to the schizophrenia sufferer. Music therapy, although long-term outcomes have not been discovered, is considered an active form of treatment that can engage the person in his own healing in a creative and active way.

Prevent Bronchitis

Although bronchitis isn't a life-threatening condition, the symptoms can persist for several days or weeks, and they can impact a person's life. The most common symptom of bronchitis is an ongoing cough. Sufferers may also deal with a sore throat, sinus problems, chest congestion, wheezing and a fever. Bronchitis typically develops after a respiratory infection. Fortunately, there are ways to protect yourself and prevent bronchitis.

Instructions

1. Wear a face mask. To limit your exposure to air pollutants such as cigarette smoke, household products and other chemicals, wear a face mask to protect your air passageway. Pollutants can irritate the bronchial tubes and cause inflammation.

2. Cover your mouth and nose with a scarf. If you're dealing with a cold or respiratory infection, cover your face with a scarf before going outdoors into cold weather. Cold air can enter the lungs and trigger bronchitis.

3. Take a vitamin supplement. Vitamins boost your immune system and lower your chances of developing a cold, flu or bronchitis. Take a multivitamin every day; and at the first sign of a cold, take echinacea and increase your vitamin C intake.

4. Get an annual flu shot. A flu shot significantly reduces your risk of developing the flu virus. In turn, this lowers your chances of developing bronchitis. Talk to your doctor about flu vaccinations.

5. Wash your hands often. Wash your hands with an anti-bacterial soap, or use a hand sanitizer to prevent an infection. Make a conscious effort to keep your hands away from your mouth and nose.

Medicines Used For Chronic Constipation

Medicines Used for Chronic Constipation

The body contains a built-in timing mechanism that tells the colon when to have regular contractions. These contractions are what move waste products through the system and out of the body. Constipation occurs when irregular conditions alter the body's natural contraction rhythm and slow or halt the movement of waste through the body. There are many causes for this and chronic constipation may lead to other complications. Medicines and preventive steps are the best treatment.

Identification

Constipation is a condition where bowel emptying occurs infrequently or where stools are hard and small, or are difficult and painful. Symptoms of constipation include pain in the abdomen associated with bowel movements, a feeling of incomplete emptying of the bowel, and a bloated feeling in the stomach region. Daily bowel movements are not an indication of good health nor are they essential. As long as the bowels move regularly and without discomfort the frequency is not important.

Medicines

Chronic constipation is treated in a number of ways. Bulking agents like bran and ispaghula husk are the most common type of laxatives with names like Fybrogel or Regulan. Stimulant laxatives like Senokot and Dulco-lax cause bowel muscles to contract. Osmotic laxatives like lactulose work by increasing the amount of water in stools by drawing it from the bowel lining. Lubricants like mineral oil and castor oil coat the bowel and stool with a waterproof film to help the stool retain moisture to improve evacuation. For severe cases, stronger prescription laxatives may be used over the more readily available over-the-counter variety.

Causes

Causes of constipation include poor general health, an inactive lifestyle, insufficient hydration, inadequate toilet facilities and a low fiber diet. Other potential causes are an under active thyroid, spinal injury, irritable bowel syndrome, colon or rectal cancer, kidney failure, and the use of narcotic pain killers, antacids or antidepressants.

Complications

Complications of constipation on the body include hemorrhoids caused by straining, which is very painful and may cause local bleeding. Abuse of laxatives over a long period of time can lead to a sluggish bowel and force a dependency. Hernias or bulging of the abdominal contents through a weak point in the abdominal wall can be painful and lead to surgery to correct the issue.

Prevention

Prior to the need for medications, preventive steps are possible to help ward off the condition. A well-balanced high-fiber diet that includes bran and fruits and vegetables is often the most helpful, but limiting white bread, cakes and refined sugar products also has benefits. Proper hydration of eight to 10 glasses of water is a good thing for total body health, with the addition of some hot beverages to stimulate the bowel. Prunes and plum juice is beneficial, and regular exercise and stress management will improve digestion and the processing of waste.

Cold Laser Work

A woman being treated in a hospital.

Cold lasers are a different type of laser than a standard hot laser, which is used for tasks like precision cutting. Cold lasers are often used to heal nerve endings and cell degeneration.

Wavelength

Cold lasers operate by firing light at a very specific wavelength that is much shorter than the wide wavelength of a standard laser. A cold laser will appear red in color and have a wavelength of 650 nanometers. Conversely, the wavelength of a laser used for cutting would be 1070 nanometers.

Intensity

Cold lasers also operate at a much lower intensity than standard lasers. The power level for cold lasers is between 5 milliwatts and 500 milliwatts. By contrast, the power level for a laser hot enough to cut something would be close to 400 watts.

The Sun

Cold lasers operate in a very similar fashion to the natural healing power of the sun. The light from the cold laser mimics the healing power of UV light generated by the sun, and speeds up the natural recovery process of the cell.

Healing

When used for healing, cold lasers are used for things like tattoo removal and corrective eye surgery. This is because they can help repair damaged cells and skin tissue.

Applications

Cold lasers are used in a variety of ways. The lasers in CD, DVD and Blu-Ray players are cold lasers. They can also be used to transmit computer data from one source to another.

Electrolysis & Metals

Electrolysis setup

Electrolysis can be used to remove layers of rust or old paint from metals. This method is useful when you are restoring old coins or jewelry or removing rust from frozen bolts. Electrolysis involves passing an electric current through an electrolyte; the result is a movement of charged ions from one electrode to the other. In this process, the rust (Fe2O3) is chemically converted to iron, releasing oxygen and hydrogen. Electrolysis works best with iron, but can work with any metal that can conduct electricity. It should be noted that some metals, like aluminum, will disintegrate faster than others. CAUTION: This project can be dangerous; take all precautions to ensure your safety.

Instructions

1. Add 1/3 cup detergent (Arm & Hammer washing soda) with 5 gallons of water in a plastic bucket or other non-conductive container (do not use metal) and mix thoroughly. The process releases gases, so it is important to work in a well-ventilated area.

2. Connect one electrode (rebar) to positive lead (anode) from a 12v battery charger (The red lead from the battery charger is the positive node.) Hold it into placem ensuring that it does not touch the side or bottom of the bucket.

3. Connect the negative lead (cathode) from the DC source to the material that needs to be cleaned.

4. Double-check all connections, making sure nothing is touching; the electrodes should not be touching each other, nor should they be touching the sides or the bottom of the bucket. Make sure you have enough electrolyte solution to cover the part being cleaned.

5. Turn on the power. Bubbles will immediately form on the surface; this is hydrogen (from the cathode) and oxygen (from the anode) being released.

6. Turn off the power once the electrolysis process is done. Wash the remaining residue off the part or object being cleaned; you can do this with a brush.

Treating Tennis Elbow

Ice

As with any injury to the muscle or tendon, apply an ice pack to relieve pain from tennis elbow. It doesn't have to be anything complicated; simply put some ice into a lockable plastic bag and then cover the bag with paper towels. You can either hold the ice pack against your elbow with the other hand or place the bag flat and lay your elbow on it.

Rest and Check Your Technique

Rest the elbow as long as you can. Tennis elbow is an injury based on repetitive motion. Tennis players and golfers often develop it as a result of flawed technique, so a pro may be able to help you change the motion causing the injury or check out your racket to make sure it's not strung too tightly. Tennis elbow is often caused by repetitive motions you perform at work, and ergonomic devices can address the problem.

Medication

Take an anti-inflammatory pain reliever like ibuprofen or aspirin. Just make sure that you are not taking any other medication that reacts adversely with these anti-inflammatory medications.

Orthotics

If other treatments are not successful in treating tennis elbow, a doctor may suggest wearing some kind of orthotic device like a wrist brace. An orthotic device works on the principle of reducing the pain by immobilizing the muscles and the tendons through a counterforce. Do so only under the supervision of a doctor because you could wind up doing more harm than good.

Cortisone Injection

Cortisone injections are the next step in treating a severe case of tennis elbow. Injections are made directly at the site of the pain to reduce inflammation of the muscles and tendons. This is intended to reduce the pain but must be accompanied by a commitment to stopping the specific motions that caused the condition.

Surgery

Surgery is the final answer to chronic tennis elbow, but it is recommended only if the pain persists for at least six months with no other treatment engendering a positive effect. The surgery typically removes the inflamed tendon and replaces it with healthy tendon. Although it sounds like a major surgery, in many cases it is done as an outpatient procedure. Recovery and rehabilitation time vary according to the patient, but in most cases a full recovery is to be expected.

How Does Fasting Affect Health

Liquid Weight Loss

One of the main reasons for fasting is weight loss. This can be good or bad, depending on what kind of fast it is and how long it goes on. One particular fast that is popular for weight loss is the juice fast. This is where the only means of nutrition that the body is getting is juices. They are usually made in a powerful blender fittingly called a "juicer." They consist of various fresh, organic fruits and vegetables and are drunk a few times a day for a period of 5 to 14 days. The idea is for the body to get the right nutrients for survival while not getting excess calories. The metabolism supposedly increases because the liquid form of calories is quickly assimilated.

Organized Fasts

Organized fasts have been known to cure a lot of illnesses. These are called "organized fasts" because they are done at a facility where there is 24-hour supervision. There are always some form of doctors, nurses and aides on staff who assist people. The idea is that if the body is left alone with as minimal movement as possible, it can actually heal itself. People come to these facilities and are given nothing but water to drink and they stay from a few days to a few weeks, depending on their condition. There is a website in Resources with information on one of these places.

Low-Hanging Fruit

Fruit fasts are a popular form of fasting that have been used for better digestion. The premise behind them is that the intestines get a break from digesting big portions of meat, cheese and other hard-to-digest foods. This type of fast mainly consists of fresh, organic fruits that are eaten all through the day for a period of one to two weeks. Another added benefit of this fast is that the body is getting high amounts of vitamins and minerals and also fiber.

Harmful if Not Swallowed

Fasting can have adverse and even fatal effects on the body. If it is a really extreme fast in which there is a complete restriction of food and liquids for a long period of time, it can lead to weakness and even death. Under normal circumstances, a person in this position will become very gaunt, disoriented and have an emaciated appearance. The organs will start shutting down and the brain will cease to function at full capacity.

Slow is the Way to Go

Regardless of what type of fast it is, the end result is always to reincorporate regular food into the diet. Since the stomach has not been fed large amounts of food, it actually ends up decreasing in size. With that being said, food needs to be slowly reintroduced into the diet in small portions. This should also be easily digestible foods like bananas, apples, grapes, oranges and vegetables. If large portions are eaten right after a fast, this is going to cause intestinal discomfort such as gas, bloating, cramps and diarrhea.

First Symptoms Of Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer is a malignant neoplasm found in the cervix or in the area of the cervix. Malignant refers to 'bad' or cancerous and neoplasm is an irregular mass of tissue. The term malignant is congruent with cancer.

Causes of Cervical Cancer

Human papillomavirus infection is the one known direct cause of cervical cancer. The human papillomavirus also referred to as HPV is an infection that attacks the membranes and walls of the vagina, anus, cervix and vulva in women. The attack of these membranes with the HPV infection has been directly tied to cervical cancers in women and cancers of the penis and anus in men. Over 20 million people are affected by the HPV in the United States alone.

Prevention/Solution

Some vaccinations for HPV can prevent cervical cancer caused by the virus. These vaccinations are called Cervarix and Gardasil and can prevent infection of the HPV types that cause cervical cancer.

Treatment

No cure exists for cervical cancer or HPV which is the leading cause of cervical cancer. There are treatment options. Treatment options focus on the symptoms of HPV. Cryotherapy is used to treat cervical cancer. Cryotherapy is the use of liquid nitrogen to freeze any abnormal cells in the cervix.

First Symptoms

Rarely are there early symptoms of cervical cancer. In fact early stages of cervical cancer are usually completely asymptomatic. Early stages of cervical cancer may present vaginal bleeding. An irregular pap smear may be the first symptom of cervical cancer. Also a first symptom of cervical cancer may be pain experienced during intercourse as well as vaginal discharge.

Additional Considerations

First symptoms of advanced cervical cancer can range from weight loss and loss of appetite to fatigue, leg and back pain, pelvic pain, urine or feces discharge from the vagina and heavy bleeding from the vagina. First symptoms of advanced cervical cancer are more likely to be noticed than first symptoms of early stage cervical cancer.

Mix Eucalyptus Oil To Kill Ants

Ants in your home or garden are hard to get rid of, and they can easily get out of control. Ant poisons are unsafe to use around food or vegetable plants, and a child or pet may be tempted to chew on an ant trap. While eucalyptus oil is not safe to for people or animals to ingest, it doesn't leave behind harmful chemicals that take a long time to break down, and it is relatively safe to use in diluted amounts.

Instructions

1. Use eucalyptus oil as an effective ant deterrent to keep ants from coming into your house. Wipe outdoor windowsills, door frames and other holes where the ants are coming in with plain eucalyptus oil, and the ants should stay away because the scent repels them.

2. Mix one cup of rubbing alcohol with one tablespoon of eucalyptus oil and put the mixture in a spray bottle. Spray a line of ants to kill them. Wipe the ants away, and then wipe along the trail with the oil and alcohol solution. Ants leave scent trails between their nests and food sources, so obliterating the trails will help get rid of the ants.

3. Mix one tablespoon of eucalyptus oil, one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid and two cups of water to make an aphid spray for your plants. Spraying the aphids won't kill all of them, but ants feed on their sweet secretions and protect young aphids as a food source. The ants will look for another food source if they are repelled by the scent.

4. Find the ant nest if you can. Boil a handful of eucalyptus leaves in a saucepan of water for several minutes, and then pour the boiling water into the nest. The boiling water should kill the queen, and the scent of the oil should keep other ants from returning to the nest.

What Does The Liver Function Test Reveal

Liver function tests, a group of blood tests, reveal to doctors if the liver is working like it should. The tests measure different enzymes and proteins processed in the liver. Abnormal readings indicate that people are experiencing conditions affecting the liver and other organs in the body.

Total Protein

The liver function test reveals how much protein in the blood. This number tells doctors if patients may be suffering from malfunctioning kidneys, liver disease, blood cancer, or malnutrition.

Albumin

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) states that liver function tests albumin levels, the fat manufactured in the liver. Albumin balances the amount of blood flowing through veins and arteries. Low albumin levels reveal liver damage caused by sepsis and inflammatory diseases.

GGT and ALP

The AIDS Treatment Data Network says that liver function tests reveal if these liver enzymes are elevated. Elevated GGT and ALP means that someone has scarred bile ducts, fatty livers, liver cirrhosis, or gallstones.

Bilirubin

The liver produces bilirubin, a yellow fluid, when red blood cells break down. Liver function tests reveal if this fluid has entered the bloodstream, indicating liver damage.

Blood Ammonia

The AAFP states that liver function tests measure the amount of ammonia is concentrated in the blood. Blood ammonia levels tests the mental status of patients who are comatose for no unknown reason.

Prothrombin

The AIDS Treatment Data Network says that prothrombin, the protein responsible for blood clotting, is produced in the liver. The liver function tests disclose whether or not people are at risk for excess bleeding due to Vitamin K deficiencies, blood-thinning medications or blood disorders.

Workplace Injuries On Computers

Computer-use related injuries contribute to lost productivity

A large factor in productivity loss is computer-related injury. Spending hours at a time using a computer can cause disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome or eye-strain, which are generalized under the term, Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI).

Identification

Hand and wrist pain are among the most common symptoms of RSI

Symptoms of RSI generally include pain and/or weakness in affected areas. Left untreated over extended periods of time, the pain and weakness will intensify, and eye-strain can result in deteriorating vision.

According to the Mail Online, a 2008 study found that 68 percent of United Kingdom workers suffered from some sort of RSI, including pain in the back, neck, arms, and hand.

Causes

A high-pressure office environment can contribute to RSI

RSI is the result of repeated manual motions and joint overuse from poor body position and posture; office workers are among the highest risk groups for injury.

Risk factors include furniture, tools, and equipments that don't conform to a particular body-type; workspace design that encourages poor posture; and tight deadlines that discourage employees from taking breaks.

Significance

RSI costs employers money

With such high rates of RSI among office-workers, productivity loss is inevitable. According to a 2007 study conducted by the Journal of Occupational Rehabilitation, 11 percent of arm/hand cases, 32 percent of the neck/shoulder cases, and 43 percent of the cases reporting both symptoms resulted in sick leave.

Prevention/Solution

Take a break

Most important is to take frequent breaks from sitting at a computer, which encourages blood flow and circulation to the muscles. When planning your day, mix up your tasks to avoid long stretches of uninterrupted typing.

Work station adjustment is also crucial; your forearms should be roughly parallel to the floor and level with your keyboard. This position may require chair or even desk height adjustment. When changing chair height also ensure that your feet can be positioned flat on the floor. Most desk heights are positioned 28 to 30 inches off the floor. While this is optimal for writing, it's counter to computer work. If possible, choose a desk with an adjustable keyboard and mouse tray.

The eye prefers objects farther away, so avoid sitting too close to the screen, and frequently look away from it. As well, avoid positioning your primary light source, such as a window, directly at your face or your screen.

Considerations

Encourage your employer to consider the benefits of proper ergonomics in the workplace. Request adjustable chairs and desks.

Or as an employer, educate your workers about the dangers of RSI. Promote breaks and offer wellness incentives for those employees taking a proactive approach to their workday.

Proper identification of the symptoms and prevention will result in increased productivity.

Donate Ova

You can donate ova for IVF treatment

Ova are the eggs made by a woman's ovaries to be fertilized by a man's sperm in the process of reproduction. Unfortunately for some women, the ovaries do not function properly leading to unhealthy eggs and therefore infertility. For these women, there is the option of seeking an egg donor, whereby a woman with healthy eggs anonymously donates her own to help an infertile woman conceive through In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF). The procedure is somewhat complicated and does involve minor surgery, therefore it is important to give the matter careful consideration before deciding to become a donor.

Instructions

1. Find out if you are eligible to donate your ova. Not all women can, and there is usually a strict criteria to ensure the best chance of success, as well as the safety and well being of both parties involved. Although regulations will vary among fertility clinics, generally the eligible age for a donor is between 21 and 35, says the New York Department of Health. This is to ensure that if you are a young donor, you can legally enter into a contract and if you are an older donor, you are still young enough to respond positively to the fertility drugs. Some clinics prefer to accept you as a donor if you have already given birth to a healthy baby because it increases the chance of success and also means you might be better prepared for any of the emotional effects of donating an egg to another woman.

2. Discuss your rights and responsibilities as an egg donor with the fertility clinic. They are required to tell you exactly what the procedure involves, how long it will take and any support or financial payment you will be offered. Before proceeding to the stage of screening, you will then have the opportunity to decide whether you would like to be a donor, in which case you must give your written consent.

3. Attend all the necessary health checks at the fertility clinic to ensure you are in adequate health to be a donor. This will include a physical and gynecological examination, including an ultrasound and blood and urine tests to check hormone levels and to screen for any sexually transmitted diseases. You will also be asked for details on your medical and family's medical history and will be given a psychological examination to check that you are of sound mind in order to go through with the procedure.

4. Begin the fertility treatment in the clinic which will involve hormone injections everyday over a period of 12 to 14 days, according to BBC Health. The hormone injected, called Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), stimulates the production of ova in the ovaries, therefore increasing the amount of eggs which can be used for donation. During this time you will continue to be tested to check that you are responding in the desired way to the treatment. The treatment is then concluded with a hormone injection to help the eggs mature 34 to 38 hours before they are due to be extracted, says NHS Choices.

5. Undergo a 40 minute surgical procedure to extract the mature eggs from your ovaries, says NHS Choices. This is a minor procedure whereby a needle is inserted through the vagina and into the ovaries to extract the eggs. You will be sedated during the process and may experience a small amount of vaginal bleeding and cramping afterwards, according to NHS Choices. This is the final part of your involvement in the egg donation, your ova may then be frozen for later use or used immediately by a couple for In-vitro fertilization (IVF).

Find The Perfect Bulb For Your Salt Lamp

Salt lamps have long been popular worldwide both for their aesthetic in the home and their suspected curative powers. As the trend spreads, many individuals are acquiring their first salt lamp and have a lot of questions. One important feature to consider when you get a salt lamp is what bulb will go with it. Making the right choice will maximize the pleasure you get out of your lamp.

Instructions

1. Think about the size of the room. For medicinal purposes, it is thought that every one pound of salt lamp is effective for 10 square feet of space. Therefore, if you're looking for a lamp to put in your 200-square-foot-bedroom, you'll need a 20 pound lamp and a bulb to fit.

2. Maximize the effectiveness of your salt lamp by choosing a lamp with enough wattage to warm the lamp to the exterior. The ionic properties of salt lamps are thought to be most effective at warm temperatures, so a higher wattage bulb will enable you to get the most out of your lamp.

3. Consider the ambiance of the room. If the lamp is an accent for romantic settings, a bulb that can be dimmed and produce warm light will be ideal. For a child's room, a brightly colored bulb may be fun. If you want the lamp to be a light source for reading, you'll need to get a bright, high wattage bulb.

4. Measure the space available in the lamp before making a purchase. The irregular shape of some salt lamps can sometimes mean that a standard bulb won't fit. All the other factors won't matter at all if you can't get the bulb into the lamp.

Lower Triglycerides & Cholesterol

High LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels are two factors that significantly increase heart disease risk. Fortunately, healthy blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides can be achieved and maintained through dietary and lifestyle changes, as well as prescription medications.

A simple blood test can be ordered through your health care provider to determine your cholesterol and triglyceride levels. If you have high cholesterol, high levels of triglycerides in your blood or additional risk factors for heart disease, follow the steps below to lower your risk and improve your overall health.

Instructions

1. Talk to your health care provider about prescription medications. Depending on your triglyceride and cholesterol levels, your doctor may determine that cholesterol-lowering medication is required in conjunction with healthy lifestyle changes.

2. Increase soluble fiber intake. Soluble fiber binds with cholesterol, thus reducing the amount that your body absorbs. Good sources of fiber include oatmeal and other healthy whole grains, as well as beans and high-fiber fruits, such as apples.

3. Supplement your diet with niacin. Niacin, also known as vitamin B3, can significantly lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides while increasing HDL (good) cholesterol. Niacin supplements are available at health food stores and most larger chain grocers.

4. Eat low-fat dairy products or nondairy alternatives. Milk, cheese and other dairy products are available in low-fat versions at most grocers. Rice milk, soy ice cream, soy milk and other nondairy alternatives are available at natural food stores and some large chain grocery stores.

5. Limit your consumption of hydrogenated fats, saturated fats and trans fats. Saturated fats, in particular, are a leading cause of high cholesterol and are also implicated in high triglyceride levels. Foods that are high in saturated fats include beef, pork, dairy and some plant oils.

6. Limit portion size. Overeating leads to your body converting excess calories into triglycerides that are then stored in fat cells. Eating healthy portions and staying within the amount of calories that your body needs each day will limit triglyceride production in the body.

7. Increase your daily physical activity. According to the American Heart Association, 30 minutes of exercise each day increases HDL (good) cholesterol and reduces your risk of heart disease.

8. Limit sugar consumption. Switch to diet and sugar-free beverages and avoid sweetened foods, such as cakes or cookies.

9. Cook with healthier, non-hydrogenated cooking oils. Olive oil and canola oil are two examples of cooking oils that contain good fats and can be incorporated into a heart-healthy diet.
