Liquid Potassium Iodide Uses

Liquid potassium iodide, also known as BRC liquid iodine, is an extremely versatile compound that is used as a supplement and home remedy. There are dozens of different uses for this particular chemical compound, from dealing with pimples and upset stomachs to helping get rid of a yeast infection more quickly.

Please consult your doctor before using liquid potassium iodide either internally or externally.

Gas

Liquid potassium iodide is particularly useful in suppressing or stopping gassy reactions that come from eating legumes, more commonly known as beans or peas. When using liquid potassium iodide for this purpose, you should take six drops of the liquid with the meal. Don't take the liquid before the meal, because the potassium iodide will have already been broken down by your digestive system, and don't take it afterward, because by then the chemical reactions that cause bowel gas will have already gotten started.

Vaginal and Intestinal Yeast Overgrowth

Yeast is a natural part of the body, found on the skin, in the stomach, and in the vaginal cavity. However, this yeast can get out of control when the balance of bacteria in the body shifts. When this happens in the intestinal track (causing diarrhea and other symptoms) or in the vagina (causing a yeast infection), liquid potassium iodide is a possible solution. For intestinal yeast, you should take 15 drops of the iodide. For vaginal yeast infection, soak a tampon in the liquid potassium iodide and insert it in the vagina for five minutes every other day for a week.

Acne

Acne, a skin condition more commonly known as pimples, can be a great embarrassment to teenagers and adults alike when it occurs. However, if you apply liquid potassium iodide in the proper amount and in the correct way, it can help clear up this condition. Using an eye dropper, put 20 drops of liquid potassium iodide into six ounces of pure water. Apply it directly onto the acne once per day. You should keep this up for three weeks, even if it seems that the acne has disappeared.

Buy Organic Produce

Buying organic food is a good idea--for both your own health and the environment--but it's more important with some produce than with others. Strawberries, for instance, tend to soak up toxins from pesticides, while grapefruit is protected by its thick skin. Many grocery stores and farmers' markets have a broad selection of organic foods.

Instructions

1. Learn some of the produce items that are more likely to be contaminated. These are good to consider for organic purchase. Some notable items are: Apples, apricots, celery, cherries, green beans, peaches, peppers, spinach and strawberries.

2. Familiarize yourself with sturdier produce. These are more resilient or less susceptible to contamination. Asparagus and avocados are good from both racks. Blueberries, bananas, broccoli and eggplant are other foods that are safe bets either way.

3. Buy fresh, and don't read too much into the doomsday "contaminated" label. Most fruits and vegetables are not going to damage your health if their purchased fresh and consumed before they go bad. Still, organic produce is typically cleaner, albeit in small doses (step 1) or extremely small doses (step 2).

4. Research the environmental benefits of organic produce. Sometimes the way in which a fruit or vegetable is cultivated is safer for the environment, thus giving it organic status (this is particularly true of beef and poultry).

Description Of Bedbugs

Though the thought of bed bugs may make people cringe, the small insects exist worldwide. In the past 10 years, researchers report a resurgence in bed bug populations, even though they have not identified a reason for this increase, according to Dr. Barb Ogg, University of Nebraska-Lincoln extension educator, in the article "Managing Bed Bugs."

Adult Bed Bugs

Reddish-brown in color, the tiny adult bed bugs measure anywhere from 3/8 to 1/4 inches long with a flat, wingless body. Younger bed bugs have a light brown or yellowish color. However, bed bugs may appear red after they have consumed the blood of a host. After feeding, the bed bugs may look bloated, almost like a different bug, according to Ogg.

Eggs

Female bed bugs can lay up to two or more eggs a day, laying thousands of eggs in a lifetime, according to Michael F. Potter, University of Kentucky College of Agriculture extension entomologist, in the article, "Bed Bugs." Without magnifying them, humans may not see the tiny eggs. The eggs are whitish in color and have a stickiness, which accounts for why the eggs attach to various surfaces. Later the bed bug eggs develop a red eye spot.

Nymph Stage

When the eggs hatch, bed bugs at the nymph stage look like "straw-colored" dots about the size of a "pinhead." Then, the nymphs continue to shed or molt "five times before reaching maturity," according to Potter. Between each molting, the nymphs need a "blood meal." In optimum conditions with temperatures between 70 to 80 degrees, bed bugs can reach maturity in a month, but cooler temperatures as well as limited access to blood may extend this growth period.

Habitat

Bed bugs can live 6 to 12 months without food, Ogg writes, and the insects can survive in vacant apartment buildings or hotel rooms. They tend to live near wherever humans sleep, hiding in spaces and cracks in woodwork, beds, walls and other areas. At night, bed bugs come out of their hiding to feed on unsuspecting hosts. Unlike ants, bed bugs "do not have nests" but "congregate" wherever they hide, Potter writes. In fact, on closer inspection, bed bug areas may show staining, "dried excrement," molted skin, blood from squashed bugs and bed bugs.

Feeding

The bed bugs with their flattened bodies feed "solely on the blood of animals," Potter writes, and the bed bug typically found living with and around humans is the Cimex lectularius. Even though this particular bed bug prefers humans, The Cimex lectularius "will also bite other warm-blooded animals, including dogs, cats, birds and rodents," according to Potter. Bed bug bites on humans typically occur on the neck, face and upper body; however, humans can find bites around their ankles and legs.

Activities For Low Self Esteem

It's normal for our feelings about ourselves to fluctuate on occasion. But people with low self-esteem continually exaggerate the negative. Whatever they do, it isn't good enough. Everyone else is better. The person with low self-esteem will compare, find himself lacking, and focus on one poor experience as an overwhelming reason why he is a failure. This thinking can even be self-fulfilling, since the person may feel doomed before he begins and start to avoid even making an effort. To counter low self-esteem, it's vital to regain a balanced view.

Adjust Your Thinking

Make yourself aware of negative thoughts. People with low self-esteem are all-or-nothing thinkers. One mistake and they are complete losers. When these thoughts surface, stop yourself. One loss or weakness does not make the person. Focus on positives. Make a list the things you've done well, the work and hobbies you enjoy, people you like and who like you, goals you've achieved. Review this list before going to bed at night and when you're feeling down. People with low self-esteem often expect themselves to live up to very high standards. It's important to recall that no one is perfect. Not even the best ballplayer hits the ball out of the stadium every time. Finally, accept who you are. We all have strengths and weaknesses. Set goals that work for you. You can't do everything. Do what you can, and enjoy the smallest achievement.

Nurture Yourself

Reinforce your importance by treating yourself well. Do activities you enjoy on a regular basis, whether its going to a movie, having a massage, or playing tennis. Eat healthy meals, exercise, and get proper rest. Celebrate small accomplishments. Did you meet a deadline at work or help a neighbor? Treat yourself to a movie, go out for your favorite ice cream, or relax with a book you've been wanting to read. Surround yourself with people and things you enjoy and that make you feel good about yourself. Put up photos of friends and family or a special vacation. If you want to improve your mind or body, set small goals, then take them one step at a time. Do not expect to become a world-class pianist when you've just begun learning to read music; just enjoy the process.

Get Involved with Positive People

Stay active with friends who value you for yourself. Avoid negative people who lead you to feel bad. If someone criticizes you, reassure yourself that their opinion does not define you. Volunteer to help someone else. Become involved in a cause you consider worthwhile, whether it's the local library, Humane Society, children's aid group, or an elderly couple who need a ride to the grocery store.

If you feel that you could use more help than the steps above provide, see your doctor for a full physical to ensure that you don't have a health problem and are not depressed, both of which can lead to self-esteem issues. You may want to find a counselor or support group to help you along the first steps toward a more positive image.

What Are The Signs & Symptoms Of Recurrent Bladder Cancer

What Are the Signs & Symptoms of Recurrent Bladder Cancer?

The signs and symptoms of recurrent bladder cancer are no different from those that indicated bladder cancer initially. The stage and grade of the bladder cancer play a part in the likelihood of cancer recurrence. Even after a tumor in the bladder has been eliminated, either with surgery or with an endoscopic procedure, it is still possible that the remaining bladder lining can become malignant and form new tumors.

Blood in Urine

Hematuria, more commonly referred to as blood in the urine, is one sign and symptom indicative of recurrent bladder cancer. This symptom occurs in the majority of people with bladder cancer. The amount of blood in the urine varies; sometimes the amount is so minute it may go unnoticed by simply looking at the urine with the naked eye. Other times, there can be enough blood in the urine to change the color of the urine to a pale yellow-red or a darker red.

Change in Urination Habits

Recurrent bladder cancer can cause a change in bladder habits. A sense of urgency leading to frequent visits to the bathroom and not being able to urinate or urinating in small amounts each time is a common symptom of recurrent bladder cancer. Another sign is a burning sensation when urinating.

Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain is a symptom of recurrent bladder cancer that presents in the latter stages of cancer. Often the pressure of bladder tumors or tumors in the surrounding areas causes pressure and pain in the lower back. Bladder cancer that recurs and metastasizes is more likely to cause lower back pain than recurrent cancer that has not yet spread.

Traditional Chinese Herbs For Pregnancy

Various Chinese herbs have been used for pregnancy, fertility, and abortions for thousands of years. Many traditional herbalists make complicated mixtures for specific problems. These herbs have often not been studied in the United States for safety in pregnant women.

Function

Traditional Chinese herbs may help an infertile woman become pregnant, to treat ailments such as colds or the flu, to ease first trimester pregnancy symptoms, or to help a woman maintain a pregnancy if she has had many miscarriages. Chinese herbs may also be given to aid male fertility and to cause abortions of unwanted pregnancies.

Significance

According to Dr. Subhuti Dharmananda in "Chinese Herbs and Pregnancy: Where to Draw the Line?" many pregnancies have complications, whether herbs are used or are not. Herbs may either help or hurt pregnancies.

Benefits

Tang-kuei and Peony Formula, which contains the Tang kuei root, peony root, and sometimes ingredients such as German chamomile, has been extensively studied and is not believed to harm a developing fetus in any way. These traditional herbs are used in the treatment of morning sickness and infertility and to prevent miscarriage.

Alternatives

If you are pregnant, you may be able to use alternatives to herbal formulas such as ginger for morning sickness, acupressure for soreness, and salt water for colds and influenza. According to Dr. Dharmananda you should not consume large amounts of ginger until it is better studied to see its effects on the developing fetus.

Warning

Use herbs to the smallest degree possible during pregnancy and only if the benefits outweigh the risks. According to Dr. Subhuti Dharmananda in "Chinese Herbs and Fertility" herbs used to treat infertility should be stopped once pregnancy is suspected or confirmed.

Home Hemorrhoid Relief

http://hemorrhoidsblog.co.cc/2009/02/prolapsed-hemorrhoids-photos/

External and internal hemorrhoids are both painful, particularly if you are constipated. An external hemorrhoid is a clump of skin at the opening of your anal canal. It can be bright red or blue, if it's in the early stages. A hemorrhoid can gets as big as a golf ball. An internal hemorrhoid is, obviously, inside the anal canal. You can't see it but you can certainly feel it. External hemorrhoids can be excruciatingly painful, particularly when you sit down. Even walking and lying down can hurt. There are techniques you can use at home to treat your hemorrhoids.

Witch Hazel

Put some witch hazel on a cotton ball and dab at your hemorrhoids. This is considered one of the best home remedies, particularly if there is bleeding involved. Witch hazel causes blood vessels to shrink and contract. Put the bottle of witch hazel into a bucket of ice before you douse the cotton ball. The colder the witch hazel, the better. Witch hazel can be purchased at the drug store or at your supermarket.

Sitz Baths and Donuts

Sit in a warm tub of water or purchase a sitz bath, which is a contraption that sits atop your toilet. Fill it with warm water, which should soothe your hemorrhoids.

Sit on a donut, which looks like an inner tube. This device will take the pressure off of your hemorrhoids. Shove the external hemorrhoid(s) back in. Just give it a push with your finger.

Over-the-Counter Remedies

Apply over-the-counter hemorrhoid creams and ointment. You can also try dabbing your external hemorrhoids with some petroleum jelly or zinc oxide. If you have internal hemorrhoids, use a hemorrhoid suppository. Also, remember to use moist wipes instead of toilet paper when you wipe after a bowel movement, because the toilet paper can irritate your hemorrhoids.

Psyllium Seeds

Take psyllium seeds. Psyllium seeds are high in fiber, which an individual needs to prevent constipation and hard, painful stools. Mix the seeds (7.5 grams) in an 8-ounce glass of water and drink it for breakfast. The next week, add it to your lunch menu. By the third week, trying drinking this concoction three times daily. Drink a lot of water to facilitate soft stools. Psyllium can be found at retail and online health stores.

Home Remedies

Soak four figs overnight and then eat them in the morning to treat your hemorrhoids from the inside out.

Make a juice out of carrots, turnip leaves, watercress and spinach and drink it. This concoction will help eliminate constipation and make it easier on your rectum when you go to the bathroom.

Mix cumin seeds powder with water and make a thick paste. Put the paste on your hemorrhoids and leave it there for a while.

Drink chamomile tea, which is reportedly great for soothing inflamed hemorrhoids.

Horse chestnut is a herb that reportedly strengthens blood vessels and reduces the itching and burning sensation caused by hemorrhoids. Apply this herb directly onto the hemorrhoid, which will speed up the healing process. Horse chestnut can be purchased at retail or online health stores.

Ulcer Stomach Treatment

Stomach ulcers are painful sores that affect the stomach, the upper part of the small intestine and esophagus. It was once thought that ulcers were caused by stress, but discoveries have found the main cause for the sores is a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). Treatments for stomach ulcers eliminate the bacteria and control acid production, allowing the sore to heal.

Antibiotics

H. pylori is a bacterium that grows in the stomach. For some people, an H. pylori infection is completely asymptomatic. The National Institute of Health estimates that 20 percent of people under 40 years of age have the bacteria in their stomach. The stomach has a protective mucous that protects the tissue from the acidity of the digestive enzymes. H. pylori breaks down this membrane, allowing the acid to cause ulcerations in the stomach. Antibiotics are used to destroy the bacteria. Doctors may use a combination of antibiotics, but the main medications prescribed are amoxicillin (Amoxil), clarithromycin (Biaxin) and metronidazole (Flagyl). Typical antibiotic cycles are two weeks. The drugs are also taken in combination with acid production reducing agents.

Acid Blockers

Acid blockers treat ulcers by inhibiting the amount of acid production. They block acid from being produced in the body, increase the pH in the stomach and allows the ulcers to heal. The target for acid blockers is histamine. Histamine is known as an immune response to allergens. However, histamine is also responsible for the acid production in the stomach. By blocking histamine's ability to attach to target stomach cells, acid production is reduced. Acid blockers are available over-the-counter or in prescription form. Common names for acid blockers are ranitidine (Zantac) and famotidine (Pepcid).

Proton Pump Inhibitors

Proton pump inhibitors work directly on the cells in the stomach that produce acid. Proton pump inhibitors are similar to acid blockers in that they increase the stomach pH and give sores the ability to heal. They also inhibit H. pylori's growth. Long-term use of proton pump inhibitors cause hip fractures in some patients, so calcium supplements are recommended. These medications are found over-the-counter and in prescription form. Common names for proton pump inhibitors are meprazole (Prilosec), lansoprazole (Prevacid), rabeprazole (Aciphex) and esomeprazole (Nexium).

How Does Gingival Recession Occur

How Does Gingival Recession Occur?

Description

Gingival recession is most commonly known as receding gums. There are sometimes jokes or cartoons depicting receding gums as an older person's problem. However, receding gums can happen at any age and can be due to several different causes. Gingival recession is a gradual and cumulative process in which the damage may show in later years but actually begins years before that point. Gingival recession can occur to any tooth or section of the mouth, though the recession commonly occurs in the frontal part of the mouth.

Causes

Humans grow a band of tougher mouth tissue at the point where tissue meets tooth as each permanent tooth grows. The quality of that tough tissue is related to the quality of the underlying bone. The bone quality is an inherited factor. The tough tissue will grow in the same manner as the bone. If the underlying bone is fragile or incomplete, the tough tissue around that tooth will also be fragile or incomplete. The inferior quality of the tough tissue is the basic cause of gingival recession.

Non-Surgical Treatments

There is actually no cure for receding gums in the traditional sense of a cure. A more practical name should probably be loss of gum rather than recession. The tissue has been destroyed and will not ever grow back. Regenerative methods are being explored, and may someday provide a cure. There are non-surgical treatments to halt continued tissue loss. Stopping forceful brushing and using a softer brush bristle is a treatment if brushing is a causal factor. Deep scaling and/or root planing is a treatment if tartar buildup is a causal factor. Flossing, strong mouth rinse and regular professional cleaning is a treatment if plaque is a causal factor.

Surgical remedy

There are minor dental surgery procedures that can replace the lost tissue. The two most common are the flap procedure and the gingival free graft. The flap procedure uses adjoining tissue, if available, to repair the recession site. The gingival free graft uses a piece of tissue from the roof of the mouth to transplant to the recession site. These two methods have been in use for years and have an extremely high success rate.

How Pht Magnets Work

Basics

PHT Magnetics is the manufacturer and distributor of PHT magnet products. This company makes a variety of blankets and magnetic wraps for horses. These products use a combination of magnetic therapy and acupressure designed to improve the health of horses and to maximize their performance. Its products are promoted for treating sore muscles and respiratory issues for horses, as well as helping to prevent infection.

Magnetic Therapy

Part of the way that PHT magnets work is through magnetic therapy. Magnetic therapy uses the application of magnetic fields to promote health throughout the body. The idea is that magnetic fields are able to go through the skin and help keep individual cells healthy and improve the function of the nervous system. It is also thought that magnetic fields are able to promote blood flow, possibly by attracting hemoglobin. It is thought that by placing magnets at specific points in the body, blood flow can be increased, which can help in the healing of sore muscles and joints. By stimulating blood flow to sore muscles, PHT blankets and wraps might promote faster healing of injured muscles. Critics of magnetic therapy point to a lack of evidence that magnets can have any biological effect, as well as the absence of carefully designed and unbiased clinical trials.

Acupressure

Acupressure is a technique used in traditional Chinese medicine, and is related to acupuncture. It is done by placing magnets or other forms of pressure at specific points on the body. Acupressure and acupuncture hypothesize that there are certain points in the body that can have dramatic effects on organ function, including the muscles and the immune system. By stimulating these points, which are located on "median lines," acupressure stabilizes the energy of various parts of the body (by restoring the balance of yin and yang). Although critics of acupressure point to a lack of clinical evidence that it is medically effective, imaging of the nerve function suggests that these points can have an effect on the body. By stimulating these acupressure spots, PHT products could help prevent infection by activating the immune system.

Importance Of Blood Oxygen Saturation

The body works in complex ways. It needs oxygen to survive, and it gets that oxygen from the air we breathe. Blood pumps through our body delivering our oxygen. One of the most important parts of blood is blood oxygen saturation. Understanding the importance of this is important to understanding your health.

Blood

Blood pumps through our body and delivers oxygen to all the vital organs and tissue in the body.

Oxygen Saturation

Oxygen saturation is when the blood cell is carrying oxygen to its maximum load.

Importance

Blood oxygen saturation is important, as the body needs the oxygen saturation of the red blood cells to be around 95 to 100 percent. This means nearly every blood cell needs to be saturated with oxygen.

What if it's Low?

If oxygen saturation is low, the body won't get the oxygen it needs to survive. This can cause sickness and tissue death. It can also indicate lung disease.

Test

Tests can be done to decide if your oxygen saturation level is low. A clip can be placed on your finger which tests your blood saturation or a blood sample can be taken and tested.

How Is Toothpaste Made

How is Toothpaste Made?

Brief History of Toothpaste

We use toothpaste everyday, but never give much thought to the history of it, or what is involved in the production of toothpaste. While humans have cleaned their teeth for thousands of years with items from ground fish bones to pumice and sand, toothpaste as we know it was first developed in the mid-1800s. When toothpaste was first presented to the public, it was available in glass jars. In the late 1800s toothpaste was packaged in collapsible tubes. It wasn't until 1934 that the American Dental Association first put forth standards to be met in the production of toothpaste.

Modern Ingredients

Toothpastes contain several different necessary ingredients. The first is a binder, which helps hold the other liquid and solid ingredients together. This affects the appearance of the paste. Two examples of binders are sodium alginate and magnesium aluminum silicate, although there are several others.

An abrasive such as chalk, softened silica or baking soda is also in the toothpaste. Some pastes include more than one type of abrasive.

A foaming compound or "sudser" is the ingredient that makes the toothpaste foam during use. It is the sudser that helps clean particles off the teeth. The most common sudser is sodium lauryl sulfate. Two more common ingredients are humectants, which keep the toothpaste moist and give it a sweet taste, and flavoring, such as mint or cinnamon.

Fluoride is a final ingredient that almost every toothpaste has, with sodium fluoride being the most common. Water is also used in the final production process, as well as a preservative which protects the toothpaste from developing bacteria. Sodium benzoate is a preservative often used.

Putting It All Together

All of the ingredients that are going in the toothpaste are weighed. This helps make sure that the ratio of the ingredients are accurate. The ingredients are then put into a large vat to be mixed. The vat holds enough of the mixture to make 10,000 tubes of toothpaste in the 4 oz. size. While the ingredients are being mixed, the tubes are put into an assembly where they are vacuumed and blown with high air pressure. This process makes sure that the tubes are sanitary. The capped end is pointed down, and the wide end is open to be filled. The tubes pass by a device which optically checks them to make sure they are properly aligned, and rotates them if necessary. They pass through the filling machine where a pump descends down and fills the tube. Then they move on to be crimped and sealed shut. At this point they also get a stamp stating where and when they were produced.

To a Storefront

Once the tubes are sealed and stamped, they are placed into the small cardboard containers. Many toothpaste manufacturer's still do this final step by hand. Samples of the batch are also taken to quality control, where they are checked for their production quality. If the batch passes, they are boxed up and sent out to stores.

Create A Diet From The Glycemic Index

The glycemic index is mostly known among diabetics since it is a scale that weighs the value of sugar intake and circulation in the blood. Its values can be used to control blood sugar, and many people have used the values to create low-fat, low-carb diets that help them lose weight. Some foods greatly increase index values, while others keep it low and help maintain healthy living.

Instructions

Create a Diet Based on the Glycemic Index

1. Eat lots of fiber and grains in the morning. Whole wheat grain cereals and fiber are filling, and they help clean out the system. Grains and fiber are especially beneficial for the digestive tract.

2. Eat dairy products for calcium. Dairy products have a low glycemic load. Milk and cheese can be used on bread and for a tasty drink in the middle of the day.

3. Eat fruits for snacks. Some fruits have a high glycemic load like bananas, raisins and dates. Some fruits are healthy snacks that affect the glycemic very mildly, such as grapefruit, oranges, peaches, and pears.

4. Eat beans and nuts for low-carb snacking. Beans and nuts are very filling, and they are great for snacking. Peanuts, cashews, and lentils have a very low glycemic load.

5. Avoid pasta and white bread. Some of the highest glycemic load is in white pasta and bread. Avoid these food groups as much as possible.

Cure Dizziness

Many people experience dizziness at some point in their lives. Whether it's caused by spinning around too much or motion sickness from riding in a vehicle or the swaying of waves in the ocean, dizziness is a common impairment to one's stability and perception. For extreme cases of dizziness caused by conditions such as vertigo or disequilibrium, a doctor may recommend you avoid what triggers the symptoms and may prescribe medication.

Instructions

1. Change your diet to include more nutritional supplements. Avoid caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and high-calorie foods. Also, lower your intake of salt and try taking vitamin supplements, like magnesium citrate and vitamin B12.

2. Use herbal remedies like ginkgo biloba and ginger. Ginger helps with the treatment of nausea, and ginkgo biloba increases blood flow to the brain, which also prevents dizziness (see References).

3. Try homeopathic therapy to alleviate dizziness. Homeopathy is a variety of alternative medicines that reciprocate the ailments to dilute the cause. Aconite is helpful if you begin to feel light-headed when you sit up too quickly. Coccolus helps with ailments of motion sickness and gelsemium helps to combat dizziness symptoms associated with the common cold.

4. Try other forms of therapy, like acupressure, aromatherapy and osteopathy, if you are still experiencing problems with dizziness. These therapies will help if your dizziness derives from stress or tension in your muscles and nervous system.

5. See a doctor to determine the cause of the dizziness if you are still experiencing severe symptoms. Once the root cause is found, the doctor may prescribe selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

The Points System Diet, or just Points Diet, was made popular by Weight Watchers. It assigns point values to food and helps you monitor your daily intake for maximum weight loss. Because the points account for fat and fiber, as well as calories, the Points Diet is different than simply counting calories. Though the Points Diet is fairly easy to follow, it does take some extra research, as you must determine point values for everything you eat.

The Points Diet

Foods low in calories and fat, but also high in fiber, will have fewer points than higher-calorie food. Generally, when you follow the Points System Diet, you will track your points in a journal to make sure you don't go over your daily allotted points.

Everyone has a different amount of allotted points per day. Daily point allotments are calculated based on your weight, age, height, activity level, gender and whether or not you're a breastfeeding mom. A slightly overweight woman who has a low activity level might expect to have about 25 points a day. Weight Watchers recommends using your allotted points every day. When you don't eat all of your points, you might not get adequate nutrition, which could set you up for weight loss failure.

Those on the Points Diet are also encouraged to eat certain food from the basic food groups. These foods are still accounted for in your daily points, though. Eat five servings of fruits and vegetables, two to three servings of milk, two servings of oil, six glasses of water and two servings of lean protein. The program also emphasizes whole grains.

A benefit to the Points Diet is that, though the plan emphasizes healthy food choices, you can still eat what you want, as long as you're counting points. For instance, you could have a few sodas a day (three points per 12 ounces) or a large, calorie-laden meal and probably still lose weight--as long as you stay within your points. However, Weight Watchers recommends focusing on more healthy, filling foods to keep hunger at bay throughout the day.

In addition to your daily points, when you follow this diet, you also have weekly allowance points. You can use these points any way you like. For instance, you could use them all in one day for a special night out. Or, you could choose to spread them throughout your week.

You can also earn activity points by exercising. Activity points are based on how long you exercised and how much you exerted yourself. For instance, a 30-minute walk on the treadmill could earn you one or two extra points for the day, depending on your weight and how fast you were walking. You can use these points only on the day you earned them; activity points don't accumulate. Or you can choose not to use your activity points and lose weight a little faster.

Use Rubbing Alcohol Around The House

Use Rubbing Alcohol Around the House

Rubbing alcohol is 70 percent isopropyl alcohol and 30 percent water, and is safe for contact with the skin. It has a number of general medicinal and household uses. This list of ideas makes having a bottle of rubbing alcohol in the house a good idea.

Instructions

1. Clean slatted blinds with rubbing alcohol. Wrap a flat tool like a spatula or a drywall knife in a cloth and dip it in rubbing alcohol. Slide it along each slat.

2. Whisk hairspray from bathroom mirrors in no time. Soak a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol and rub over the mirror, then clean the mirror with window cleaner and paper towels.

3. Keep windows frost-free all winter with a solution of one quarter of water and a half-cup of rubbing alcohol. Wash the windows with the solution and polish with newspaper to prevent frost from building up.

4. Make a soft ice pack with three parts of water and one part rubbing alcohol in a self-sealing plastic bag. Freeze the solution to a soft slush that will conform to the injured body part, unlike a rigid ice pack.

5. Remove ticks from dogs. Use a cotton swab and dab rubbing alcohol on the tick before removing it. Grab the tick as close to the skin as possible and remove it. Dab alcohol on the wound to disinfect it. Use the same method when removing ticks from people, too.

6. Wipe down the phone with rubbing alcohol. Remove grime and disinfect at the same time.

7. Eradicate ink stains. Soak the spot in rubbing alcohol for several minutes, then launder.

Herbs That Stimulate Hair Growth

People who are slowly going bald often don't know where to turn for help. Instead of spending money on costly medical treatments that pose risks to your overall health, turn to nature to find herbs which can stimulate hair growth.

Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne Pepper stimulates hair growth by improving blood circulation in the scalp. Even if you can't tolerate eating cayenne pepper, you can still utilize a paste consisting of the juice of boiled cayenne pepper and olive oil, rubbed into the scalp, to stimulate hair growth.

Rosemary

Rosemary works to cleanse the hair from the root to the tip. Over time, the use of hair care products, sweat and dirt can clog the pores of the scalp which impedes hair growth and causes baldness. Add a little rosemary to the foods you eat, or look for shampoos and conditioners that contain rosemary

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera nourishes and moisturizes the skin of the scalp in the same way it moisturizes your face, arms, hands and legs. Look for hair care products, such as styling gel, mousse, shampoo and conditioner that contain aloe vera, or simply use aloe straight from the plant.

Stinging Nettle

Stinging nettle is the leading ingredient in the hair growth shampoo and conditioner Nioxin. Stinging nettle works to rebuild the hair from just below the scalp. Stinging nettle is slow, but effective, for hair growth.

Jojoba

Jojoba oil is excellent for cleansing the hair of buildup from dirt, sweat and hair root and follicle damage from the sun. Jojoba can be applied topically in the form of shampoos, conditioners and styling aids.

Saw Palmetto

For both men and women, the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which contains testosterone, can inhibit hair growth. Saw palmetto has been shown in some to to inhibit the production of DHT in the scalp. Saw palmetto can be taken as a supplement or applied directly to the scalp in the form of shampoos, conditioners and styling aids.

Transfer From The Exam Table To A Wheelchair

Raise the back half of the exam table to help the patient sit up and prepare for the transfer into his wheelchair.

An exam-table transfer should be a series of coordinated and cooperative movements between yourself and the patient. The task of transferring a patient from the exam table to his wheelchair can seem daunting, particularly if your size is disproportionate to his. Naturally, the degree of mobility will vary between patients and you should always take these differences into account before attempting to move someone. According to the Duke University Office of Safety -- Ergonomics division, you should follow several key steps, using strategic effort and proper technique to ensure the safety of yourself and your patient.

Instructions

1. Raise the back end of the exam table. This brings the patient to a sitting-up position.

2. Ask the patient to push himself to the edge of the exam table using his arms and torso for movement.

3. Position his wheelchair next to the exam table and angled slightly toward the patient.

4. Wrap your arms under his arms and around the lower back, creating a supportive frame for him to lean on as you ask him to stand.

5. Continue to support the patient with your arms around his lower back and ask him to turn his body toward the wheelchair; he should use your elbows for support if necessary. If able, the patient should step toward the wheelchair; if he is not able to do this, ask him to pivot his leg. This positions the patient in front of the wheelchair to enable a smoother entry.

6. Place your leg between his to block his knee, while still wrapping your arms around his back. Instruct him to slowly sit down in the wheelchair.

What Are The Different Types Of Hmos

HMO insurance comes in several different models.

An HMO, or health maintenance organization, is a type of health insurance that consists of a group of health care providers who offer their services to individuals and families who choose to participate in their group. All HMOs are not the same. Several types of HMOs exist, each with its own structure and regulations.

Staff Model

Health care providers in this model are direct employees of the HMO. They have offices in the HMO's buildings and receive a salary directly from the HMO and see only patients belonging to the HMO.

Group Model

In this model, it's the group rather than the individual providers that contracts with the HMO. The HMO pays the group, which in turn decides distribute the money among each of its members. Providers within a group model do not see patients outside the HMO.

Open-panel Model

Health care providers who wish to see both HMO and non-HMO patients and use their own offices can contract with an IPA, or independent practice association, which in turn contracts with the HMO. The IPA receives a fixed amount for each of its patients. Because of their ability to see non-HMO patients, you can continue to see providers in an IPA even if you started seeing them through an HMO and are no longer a member of the HMO.

Network Model

The commonly-used network model involves an HMO contracting with a combination of individual providers, groups and IPAs, often creating a wider range of providers for its members than the other models.

Signs & Symptoms Of Ms Pain In The Hands

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease that attacks the nervous system. It can sometimes affect cognitive functions, and it wreaks havoc on physical functions. One physical area often affected by MS is the hands. Watch for signs and symptoms of MS pain in the hands, and share them with your doctor.

How MS Affects the Hands

The myelin sheath that shields neurons in the brain and spine protects the nervous system. It allows for normal communication in the central nervous system (CNS), providing normal movements and normal pain experiences. When MS takes over, it causes the myelin to become inflamed, causing demyelination. When this occurs, normal communication in the CNS becomes disrupted.

Loss of Dexterity in the Hands

One major symptom of MS in the hands is a loss of dexterity. Fine-motor skills regress or disappear. The patient has difficulty picking things up and maintaining a hold on items. She has difficulty writing or buttoning clothing. She cannot control her eating utensils. It may be painful to do so. These symptoms occur after MS attacks cause a loss of muscle control or muscle weakness in the hands.

Numbness and Tingling in the Hands

Another symptom of MS is numbness or tingling in the hands. The tingling sensation is often described as pins and needles poking the hands, which can be quite painful. The numbness and tingling in the hands is commonly one of the first signs of MS.

Nerve Pain in the Hands

Nerve pain in the hands of an MS patient is often described as a shooting pain. It can be sporadic or constant and often feels almost unbearable. It occurs later in the MS progression, often after the part of the CNS leading to the hands has been attacked. It can also result from scarring left on the nervous system after an MS attack.

Involuntary Movements in the Hands

Some patients with MS will also experience involuntary movements in their hands, often described as ticks, spasms, tremors or twitches. The patient is unable to control the movement, which can be distracting. Muscle contractions can be painful.

You must be able to see yourself in your minds-eye living a happier, healthier, more prosperous, and more productive life without the habits that have been holding you back. Your mind is your most powerful computer. It obeys its programmed commands like the computer on your desk. Therefore you have to be careful and conscious of what you are programming yourself to do on a daily basis. Every habit you have begins in your mind. The easiest and most effective way to overcome the bondage of any habit is to constantly visualize in great detail and affirm in your mind the desired results of being free from that habit.

Instructions

Let Go of Bad Habits

1. Realize the power of your mind and know that just as you have programmed yourself for this habit, you can reprogram yourself for new behavior patterns. Your mind will respond to the images you put in it much like the computer on your desk. Begin now to visualize the desired results of living without these habits. In a quiet place, calm your mind and begin to build a picture in as much detail as you can of your new happiness and health and how you would look and feel letting go of your bad habits. Use this visualization as a reference every time you feel the old compulsiveness.

2. Assess the damage that this habit has caused you. What tolls has it taken on your health, your pocketbook, your relationships? Remember that every time you say yes to this habit you are one step further away from where you want to be. Keep your positive visualization in mind and contrast it to the negative effects of your habit. The idea is that when you compare your ideal positive visualization to the negative road this habit is taking you down, you will find an increased willingness to let go of bad habits. Remember that you deserve the best and that your bad habits are cheating you out of this. Consider deeply the consequences of your bad habits and the vibrant life you could lead without them and it will get easier to let go of bad habits.

3. Replace bad habits with good ones. Learn to reward yourself with healthy things only. Do not hang around people with the very habits you are trying to let go of. As much as possible, avoid people or situations that may deter you from your goal. Develop healthier friendships and hobbies. Reprogram your mind to accept only good things and let go of bad habits and people and situations that condone them. Changing yourself if a personal journey. Don't try to have others hop on your bandwagon. Lead by the example of a new and improved you!

4. Be gentle with yourself. Change takes time. If you experience set-backs in your resolution to let go of bad habits, don't be discouraged. Forgive yourself because you're human and you make mistakes. But persevere to your desired goal of letting go completely of your bad habits. Whatever you do, no matter how many times you fall back on those nasty habits, know that every moment is a new opportunity for change. Know that is is never too late for you to start a new life. No matter what, keep a strong positive visualization of the freedom and happiness you would enjoy letting go of your bad habits. Like a movie in your mind, keep playing the picture of how you wish your life was instead of feeling trapped by your habits.

5. Realize that your future is largely defined by your habits. With that in mind, choose only good habits and seek to trade-in every bad habit, one at a time, for a healthier conditioned response. Reprogram the computer on your shoulders with detailed visualizations of a new and improved you and learn to let go of bad habits. Realize that just as you have developed bad habits, you have the same power to develop good ones. Visualize your life twenty years from now without your habit. Consider your life twenty years from now with your habit. Train your mind to want the positive visualization of a better life so much that it is willing to let go of bad habits. With continual practice you will find it easier and easier to let go of your bad habits. Know that your new and improved life awaits you and learn to willingly let go of bad habits forever.

Ingredients

The ingredients in Trilex include lysine, chaparral, clematis, thorowax root, skullcap root, angelica root, gentian root, licorice root, goldenseal and rhubarb.

Although the main advertising bylines claim that Trilex fights the oral herpes virus that causes cold sores, a closer look at the information provided by the company reveals that the intended function of Trilex is to boost your immune system to prevent flare-ups of the herpes simplex virus.

Features

According to RxList, the lysine contained in Trilex may stop the herpes virus from growing, meaning that once an outbreak occurs, this vitamin-type substance may shorten the length of time you have the cold sore. Additionally, rhubarb also seems to have the potential to speed up the healing of cold sores, but none of the supplements in Trilex kill the herpes simplex virus.

Risks

The herb chaparral is known to pose a number of risks when taken orally, including liver and kidney damage, while clematis is also considered unsafe for oral consumption due to the risk for severe gastrointestinal irritation, warns RxList. What Are The Dangers Of Low Oxygen Saturation

Supplemental oxygen raises low oxygen saturation.

Oxygen saturation is a measure of the amount of oxygen in the blood with 100 percent being the maximum. Normal blood oxygen levels, measured by a pulse oximeter, range from 95 to 100 percent with below 90 considered low, according to the Mayo Clinic. Low oxygen saturation, or hypoxemia, is a dangerous condition that presents serious ramifications if not treated promptly.

Shortness of Breath

Shortness of breath is one indicator of low oxygen saturation. It represents a dangerous condition that needs to be treated. Shortness of breath can be caused by several factors including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, a group of lung diseases that block the flow of air. Emphysema and chronic asthmatic bronchitis are two examples of those lung diseases that prevent sufficient oxygen from reaching the blood stream. Continued low oxygen saturation leads to permanent damage to the body's ability to breathe. COPD causes many deaths worldwide, according to the Mayo Clinic, and is primarily the result of smoking.

Energy

Oxygen provides energy for the body and its cells. Low oxygen saturation robs the cells of their source of energy. Fatigue, lethargy and muscle weakness represent symptoms of lack of energy. The cells are starved for oxygen and cannot respond like cells with a full supply. If you suffer from extreme fatigue, consider low oxygen saturation as a possibility. Have your blood levels tested. A simple test with an oximeter will provide the results.

Mental

The brain relies upon oxygen to function. Brain cells die without oxygen. Low oxygen saturation causes mental problems like confusion and short term memory loss. If these conditions are accompanied by other signs of low oxygen saturation like tingling fingers and a chronic cough, seek medical attention promptly.

High Altitude Pulmonary Edema

This condition occurs when traveling to high altitudes above 8,000 feet. The thin air at high altitudes has less oxygen, and the body can quickly become oxygen deprived. The air is also dry and dehydration becomes a problem. Symptoms include headaches, fluid retention and coughing in addition to shortness of breath. This condition can affect anyone traveling to high altitudes and is fatal if not treated promptly.

Blood Alcohol Levels

About Blood Alcohol Levels

Blood alcohol levels are the most accurate way to find out how much alcohol is in the body. Its best known use is to determine the intoxication level of a driver, but it has other purposes. Blood alcohol levels register quickly, and various factors alter the results. If there's a car accident with injuries, usually the police demand a blood alcohol level test on all drivers.

Function

There are several reasons for blood alcohol tests. It can pinpoint a drunken driver and absolve someone suspected of drunken driving. Sometimes, medical conditions such as hypoglycemia or diabetes cause symptoms that imitate alcoholic confusion and unclear thinking. When a person is comatose, it helps eliminate the potential of an alcohol-induced coma. Police and program directors use it to find out whether people who are on programs for drug and alcohol abuse cheat. Occasionally, a child has a blood level alcohol test. This occurs when a child has alcohol poisoning from accidental ingestion or sipping too many adult drinks.

Results

The blood alcohol level is from a test that measures the amount of alcohol in the blood. Because alcohol absorbs rapidly into the bloodstream, it only takes minutes to register a drink. Alcohol tends to peak in blood alcohol tests about an hour after the drink, but food in the system slows the absorption. The results show whether there's ethanol, which is alcohol, in the blood. If there's none, the test is normal.

Identification

Each state has different rules for the definition of legal intoxication. Many use the reading of .08 BAC (blood alcohol concentration) as the point where official intoxication begins for legal purposes. This is the recommended level from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Size

The amount of alcohol in the blood varies by a person's size and other factors, even if you drink the same amount as a friend. For instance, a 120-lb. woman might have two drinks in an hour and register a .08, official intoxication in most states. Her girlfriend might drink the same amount but weigh 140 lbs. and still be under the legal limit.

Gender

Gender makes a difference in blood alcohol tests. The same 120-lb. woman who drank two alcoholic beverages and registered .08 would generally register .07 if she were a man. The difference comes from the amount of body fat. Women generally have more body fat than men, and alcohol doesn't go to the fat cells as easily and leaves more for the rest of the body. Hence, a woman weighing the same amount as a man would have less tissue that is non-fat and a higher concentration in that tissue.

Time Frame

The amount of drinks you have and your blood alcohol level also vary by the amount of time it takes for you to drink the beverages. If you had only three drinks for the evening but they were all at closing time, consider calling a cab. If, however, you spaced them over a 4-hour evening, the potential for a high blood alcohol level is limited.

Party Smart

Alcohol can be deadly in car accidents as well as from an overdose. The consensus is that .4 is the lethal blood alcohol level, but death may occur at even lower levels. The problem with alcohol poisoning is that there's no antidote, just treatment to keep a person alive while he displays symptoms. If you want to find out how high a few drinks takes your blood alcohol level, use the calculator in the Resources area.

Treatment For Burn Blisters

Any burn, regardless of substance, may cause blisters to form. This type of burn is classified as a second-degree burn, and requires more care and attention than a minor, or first-degree, burn. Second-degree burns must be treated carefully to prevent infection during the healing process, which may take up to two to three weeks, depending on the location and size of the burned area.

Blister Burns

A second-degree blister may form after exposure to sun, chemicals, hot oil, hot water or any other number of hot or caustic substances. Whenever possible, flush the burned area with cool, not cold, water to rinse away the substance that has caused the burn in the first place. Do not pop the blisters or wipe away moisture caused by fluid loss. If the burned area is small (less than the size of the palm of your hand) you may treat it at home with care, though anything larger or any burns to the face or genital area should be seen and treated by a physician.

Treatment for Closed-Burn Blisters

For a second-degree blister burn that is closed, protect the area by removing any objects such as clothing or jewelry from around the area. Expose the burned area to cool running water for about 10 to 15 minutes to help cool the temperature of the skin as well as to flush substances such as chemicals or fluids away from the skin. Avoid dunking or exposing the blistered skin to ice water, as this will serve to increase chances of skin infection. The same goes for popping or breaking open the blisters.

Don't apply oils such as butter or solid cooking shortening to the burned area, as this closes the pores and doesn't allow heat to escape, which is the goal. Lift or slightly raise the extremity to help reduce swelling.

For immediate first aid to someone who has second-degree or blister burns from a caustic or chemical substance, remove the clothing immediately and run the burned area of the skin under cool running water for between 15 and 30 minutes.

Treatment for Open-Burn Blisters

Open-burn blisters may be treated with antibiotic ointments such as Neosporin or aloe-based gels that will kill bacteria. Cover the burned area gently and loosely with gauze to protect against infection. Try not to peek or uncover the burned area for at least 24 hours in order to encourage the healing process. To remove the bandage, you may need to soak it first to prevent it from sticking to the wound. Check for any signs of infection, reapply antibiotic ointment or cream, and re-cover with clean bandaging.

Test For Lupus

Test for Lupus

Lupus is a complex autoimmune disease. It often makes the body's immune system attack its own cells, tissues and organs. Lupus has a wide variety of symptoms that often appear and disappear throughout a sufferer's life. You can test for lupus, although you will have to rule out a number of other conditions in the process to be sure. Read on to learn test for lupus.

Instructions

1. Take a urine sample. Your doctor should then look for large amounts of protein in your urine as well as other abnormalities. A urine analysis will show symptoms similar to kidney disease if you have lupus.

2. Get your lungs and chest scanned as well. Lupus will cause a variety of things to show up on the scan, including inflammation of the lining of the lung, heart lining inflammation and inflammation around your abdomen. If any of these issues show up, further testing will have to be done to rule out other conditions.

3. Have a blood test done. This test will look for low numbers of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. All three of these conditions could be caused by your immune system attacking your blood stream and could indicate lupus.

4. Check for the swelling of your joints. A doctor will do tests to see if the swelling is caused by an activity that you do or if it is a result of lupus, which can cause arthritis-like symptoms in many sufferers.

5. Talk to your doctor about other causes of your conditions. It could be that other activities and parts of your lifestyle are the cause of some of your symptoms. If your doctor cannot explain the cause of your symptoms, he will probably put on a treatment plan for lupus patients or send you to a specialist. Don't get discouraged, as this condition can be extremely difficult to narrow down.

Use Gemstone Therapy

Use Gemstone Therapy

Gemstone therapy is based on the theory that certain stones possess specific healing energies. Physical and emotional problems can block the body's energy center, resulting in illness of some kind. When a gemstone comes into contact with the body, its energy is released and transferred to the person. Use gemstone therapy to unblock negative energy or heal the body and gemstone meditation to heal the spirit.

Instructions

1. Try meditating with gemstones to help rev up the main energy centers of your body, also known as chakras. Specific colors placed on a specific chakra, or area of the body, will stimulate the energy of that area. The best time to meditate is morning and it's helpful to have soft music playing in the background to empty your mind. Lie down, place the stones in the pattern described below, take a couple of deep cleansing breaths and meditate for about 30 minutes.

2. Buy a rock crystal, believed to be the most therapeutic stone. It's thought to help rid one of resentments and to help with stomach aches. Carry it during the day and lay it on your bedside table at night. Keep it close and its effects will help strengthen your physical and emotional weaknesses.

3. Address a specific problem by wearing a necklace with a gemstone, or carrying a stone in your pocket specific to that issue. These are the two most effective ways to incorporate gemstones into your life in order to benefit from their therapeutic effects.

4. Take care of your gemstones. Most will need to be washed in water two or three times a week to remove accumulated negative energies. Other stones should not be rinsed because doing so will dull their finish and effectiveness. A good chart will advise you correctly.

5. Increase your knowledge about gemstone therapy by taking an online course or teleseminar. Some are free and others charge a fee. Use due diligence when making your selection.

Detoxifying Footbath

We use our feet constantly and they absorb a tremendous amount of stress. Taking care of them is essential and relieves stress on the entire body. In Eastern medicine the feet are believed to have points related to each organ. Treat the point on the foot for lungs, for example, and you help balance the lungs. Feet are more important than we realize. Take a detoxifying foot bath to relieve tension, stimulate circulation and promote overall health.

Make it a Routine

Buy a detoxifying foot bath and soak your feet daily. Use oils and herbs such as mint for stimulation, lavender for relaxation, and tea tree oil for cleanliness and to fight infection. If a detoxifying foot bath is not in your budget, save money by using a deep, wide bucket, fill it with warm water and add natural oils or herbs and sea salt. Try natural bath salts from your local health food store. Keep it simple. You don't have to spend a lot of money to relax. Foot therapy is more than 3,000 years old and a bucket, herbs, salt water and oil are sufficient.

Take Your Time

Take time to sit quietly while your feet soak. Turn your phone off and put on some quiet music. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Soak your feet for up to 30 minutes. Pat your feet dry and moisturize your feet after the foot bath with a natural vegetable oil, massage oil or natural lotion. Massage your feet gently and work out any tension. Don't forget to soak your feet in the ocean. The sea contains all the minerals you look for in a good foot bath.

For the Ultimate Experience

Go to your local spa or natural healing center for an ionic foot bath. In 2003 the Nobel Prize for Chemistry was awarded to Peter Agre and Roderick MacKinnon, "whose research became the foundations that inspired the development of ionic principles and detoxification through water channels." The ionic foot bath stimulates the feet's large pores to eliminate toxins promoting physical and mental energy, vitality and overall well-being. Drink plenty of water, relax and enjoy your treatment. The therapist will take care of everything.

Be Disciplined and Take Care

MacKinnon and Agre's research supports Reflexology's claim that our feet are a great source for healing. Train yourself to take care of your body from the inside out. Eat properly, drink plenty of water, exercise and sleep 8 to 10 hours every night. Our society tends to focus more on external beauty, neglecting the need for regular nurturing and care. Be disciplined and make your feet a priority.

Cost Of Accupuncture In Dogs

Acupuncture is the practice of inserting thin needles into certain pressure points on the body to initiate a change in one's health. The popularity of acupuncture for humans in America has gone to the dogs. The costs of acupuncture for dogs will vary greatly.

History

Acupuncture originated in China around 600 B.C. Animals received acupuncture more often than humans at this time, since they were subjects for testing what points would give certain results. The treatments were ultimately intended to benefit the emperor and were not offered for a price.

Treatments

The first treatment can cost more than subsequent treatments, since it will take additional time to diagnose the dog and select the correct points. On average, prices range from $60 to $200 for a single session. Some clinics may charge up to $500 for complex problems.

Treatment Frequency

One-time problems may require only one treatment. Chronic conditions often require several treatments to show results or provide benefits to the dog. Each treatment lasts about 20 or 30 minutes.

Common Conditions

Veterinary acupuncturists often treat older dogs for arthritis or joint and hip problems. These treatments are usually administered anywhere from three to 10 times, occurring less frequently as time passes. Signs & Symptoms Of Hodgkin'S Lymphoma

Hodgkin's Lymphoma - also known as Hodgkin's disease - can mirror some of the signs and symptoms of the flu at first (fever, night sweats, and fatigue), making a wrong initial diagnosis a possibility. However, there are other signs and symptoms of Hodgkin's that differentiate it from the flu altogether, especially later in the progression of the disease.

Hodgkin's Lymphoma defined

According to the Mayo Clinic, Hodgkin's Lymphoma is "a cancer of the lymphatic system." Our lymphatic system -- which includes lymph nodes, lymph channels, and our spleen, thymus, tonsils, adenoids, and bone marrow -- is a part of our body's immune system.

Hodgkin's Lymphoma derived its name in 1832 from a British physician named Thomas Hodgkin, who was the first to differentiate it from other lymphomas.

Initial signs and symptoms

Chills, fever, night sweats, and ongoing fatigue can be initial signs and symptoms of Hodgkin's Lymphoma. However, developing itching, losing your appetite, or dropping more than 10% of your body weight rapidly can also be symptoms.

Later symptoms

If you are expecting pain to accompany all the possible symptoms of Hodgkin's, you may not recognize this one: pain-free lymph node swelling in your armpits, neck, or groin areas. Some people notice what seems to be a knot in these areas, but since they are not painful, they rule out any concern. But since tumors eventually grow with Hodgkin's, it is important to have a doctor check out any suspicious knots that appear in these areas.

The difference between Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma

There is one key difference between Hodgkin's Lymphoma and non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma: the presence - or lack of a presence - of an abnormal cell named Reed-Sternberg cell.

Both Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's are types of lymphoma cancer, but the Reed-Sternberg cell is found only in Hodgkin's Lymphoma, which is important to know since treatment for each can vary.

Warning

In addition to the aforementioned symptoms, Hodgkin's can extend beyond the lymphatic system and into other parts of the body. Progression of this disease has the ability to adversely affect your body's ability to fight off infections too.

Prognosis

According to the Mayo Clinic website, approximately one third of all women - and half of all men - will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime. That's a staggering statistic. However, the good news is that there is a 95 percent success rate (for 5 years) for those properly treated for Stage I or Stage II of Hodgkin's disease.
