Flowers That Repel Bees

Only the adult orchard oriole bird can open Erythrina flowers for nectar.

Bees flock mainly to blue and yellow flowers for nectar and to pollinate, since bees can only see the colors of yellow, blue and ultraviolet. More than 4,000 bee species live in the U.S., according to the U.S. Forest Service. Certain flowers repel bees by specifically attracting other means of pollination or by producing odors bees do not like. Planting bee-repelling flowers helps if you have bee allergies but want to make certain other pollinators hang around, such as butterflies and hummingbirds.

Penstemon (Penstemon barbatus)

Certain species of penstemon flowers, native to eastern Asia and North America, evolved to attract hummingbirds to their nectar instead of bees by mimicking the shape of the hummingbird's bill. The bright red penstemon flower lures hummingbirds with its long, narrow shape, and the hummingbirds feed and pollinate each flower. Some penstemon flowers grow small yellow or blue flowers, which are easily accessible by bees.

Erythrina fusca (Erythrina fusca Loureiro)

The Erythrina fusca tree, growing mostly in South America, Africa and Asia, and the orchard oriole have evolved to work together to pollinate the tree. For example, only the adult orchard oriole birds can open the flowers of the E. fusca to receive the nectar and pollen. Other birds can only get nectar by feeding after the orioles have fed or by stealing nectar after piercing the flower. Adult male orchard orioles have a black and burnt orange color, matching a hidden part of the E. fusca flower. In turn, the E. fusca plants flower only when in the presence of the most orchard orioles. The largest bees cannot access the nectar of the E. fusca.

Feverfew (Matricaria parthenoides)

Feverfew produces white flowers that look like daisies, making it a decorative plant for flower arrangements as well as a medicinal one when dried. Dried feverfew soothes migraines and repels moths. The name "feverfew" originates from the Latin name "fetrifugia," which means "driver-out of fevers." Feverfew has a strong, pungent odor that repels bees. Avoid growing feverfew among flowers that need pollination.

Soil Classification Types

Soil can be classified in many different ways.

There are many different individual soil types, so classifying them makes it easier to use them and to understand their differences for a specific outcome. It also allows for comparisons to be made between the soils of different regions because of a recognition of their common properties. Soil classification initially began with agricultural purposes in mind and since then has been used in ecological studies.

Natural vs. Technical

According to David Rossiter, in "Principles of Soil Classification," there are various ways of classifying soils, and a major way is to distinguish between natural and technical approaches. Natural soil classification categorizes soils by their inherent properties, behavior, and chemical composition. Technical soil classifications group soils by their properties or functions that relate directly to a proposed use and are more widely employed in industry and agriculture.

Ecologic Region

Natural soil classification groups soils by the region they are found in and the surrounding ecosystems. The ecological properties of the soil are considered using ecology regional classification, including factors such as water quality, geomorphology, and biodiversity. As part of an ecosystem, soils are a function of the climate, topography, weathering, vegetation, and ecological history of a region, according to Michigan Tech.

Genetic Soil Classification

By using genetic soil classification methods, soils are grouped by what Rossiter (see reference 1) refers to as "presumed genesis," which takes into consideration that each soil has a personal history and ecology. It also takes into account the development of the soil profile, which depends on the interpretation of the landscape and soil genesis by the researcher.

Fertility Capability

One of the technical soil classifications most used is the fertility capability of the soil. This has an important application for agriculture as it can both assess the land under current cultivation and help scout new areas suitable for cultivation. Fertility capability readings are based on the attributes of the topsoil (measured quantitatively) and the soil taxonomy. Fertility capability soil classifications are especially important in areas where land is scarce and maximum output is required from cultivated land, such as on islands or arid regions.

Land Use Capability

Land use capability is a soil classification type widely used by governments and planning agencies for land zoning purposes. According to The Natural Resources Conservation Service (see reference 3), the land use capability method lends itself very well to this kind of application because it uses eight classes of land, each with a different use capability. Thus, an area already mapped out under the land use capability classification method will provide a good indication of zone areas of land.

What Does Chemotherapy Do For Patients With Scleroderma

Scleroderma is an autoimmune disorder classified as a rheumatologic disorder because it affects the body's connective tissues. The name comes from the Greek word skleros, meaning hard, and derma, meaning skin. The condition is marked by hard skin due to the build-up of scar-like tissue. Researchers have not found what causes scleroderma, but some are using chemotherapy to treat it.

Symptoms

Scleroderma's most consistent symptom is thickening or hardening of the skin. Patients may also experience swelling of the hands and feet, calcification spots on the skin, rigid joints, ulcers on the fingers or toes, and pain in the joints. Some patients also experience gastrointestinal symptoms, including heartburn, difficulty swallowing, constipation and weight loss. They may also have shortness of breath, persistent cough, fatigue and hair loss.

Forms

There are two types of scleroderma, localized and systemic. Localized affects only the skin and usually only in a few small places. Systemic scleroderma affects not only the skin but also internal systems including the digestive system, respiratory functions and kidneys. Systemic scleroderma can be life-threatening, causing organ damage.

Similarities: Scleroderma and Cancer

Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks itself. It exhibits a pro-inflammatory response and anti-DNA antibodies. Similarly, cancer cells grow by exploiting a pro-inflammatory situation, and the accumulation of these cells induces the production of anti-DNA antibodies. Although a direct link between autoimmune diseases and cancer has not been formed, the similarities encourage further research.

Effects of Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is often the treatment of choice for cancer patients. The drugs used in chemotherapy are administered in high doses to kill the abnormal, or cancerous, cells. Chemotherapy has proven successful in shrinking or eliminating tumors of cancer cells. However, chemotherapy cannot choose the cells it kills. Therefore many healthy immune system cells are also killed, causing serious side effects for patients. This non-selectiveness, however, can be advantageous to patients who also have autoimmune diseases.

Doctors have documented cases, including the case of a women treated with chemotherapy for her Hodgkin's Lymphoma, where the scleroderma went into remission following the treatment. These cases have prompted further studies on the effects of chemotherapy on scleroderma.

Clinical Study

More than 300,000 people in the United States suffer from scleroderma. In 2006, the University of Texas Medical School in Houston began conducting a clinical study to determine the long-term effects of chemotherapy in treating scleroderma. Preliminary findings are promising and the study is ongoing.

Chiropractor Vs Physical Theray

Chiropractors and physical therapists are two disciplines used to treat back, nerve and muscle problems. Chiropractors are doctors, and physical therapists hold advanced degrees.

Chiropractor

According to the website Pain Channel, chiropractors stress an overall health plan without surgeries or medicines. These doctors focus on diet, rest, routine exercise and spinal adjustments. They utilize physical therapy, massage and water therapy in treating patients.

Education - Chiropractor

Chiropractors complete two to four years of undergraduate study, and four years of chiropractic study. While in chiropractic school, the first two years are classroom and lab study, while the last two years are clinical training on the back, muscle and nerves.

Physical Therapist

The Bureau of Labor Statistics describes physical therapists as those who work with patients who have injuries and diseases by providing therapies that restore function, relieve pain and improve mobility. They promote overall health and fitness and treat patients with exercise, cold and hot compresses, electrical stimulation and traction.

Education - Physical Therapist

Physical therapists complete a four-year undergraduate physical therapy program, and a two-year masters program. After this is completed, a three-year doctoral program is available.

Collaboration

Chiropractors and physical therapists hold many of the same ideas and principles. Chiropractors consult physical therapists for their patients, and some of them have therapists in their private practices.

Herbal Remedies To Stop Snoring

Snoring can be caused by many different factors, but there are various herbal remedies that can help with the condition. Herbs have long been used to aid with various ailments, and snoring is no exception. One advantage of using herbs for snoring is that they can be much cheaper than over-the-counter or prescription drugs. Before using any herbs, be sure to evaluate any other medications you may be taking as some herbs may alter their effectiveness.

Which Herbs Can Help Stop Snoring

If you are congested from allergies or a cold, you may want to first try using a vaporizer or humidifier in the room when you go to sleep. Adding eucalyptus or peppermint drops into the vaporizer or humidifier will further aid in opening up your airways while you sleep to help alleviate snoring. Another trick is to keep a bottle of marjoram oil open in the room. You should not apply this directly to your skin, but instead keep the jar open by your bedside overnight. For best results, leave the jar open for at least one hour prior to you heading under the covers.

Honey and ginger are also a good combination together to help you stop snoring. Drinking a ginger-based tea with honey just before bed will help coat your throat, and also help act as a decongestant.

Herbal Anti-Snoring Pills and Nasal Sprays

Herbal anti-snoring pills are composed of natural enzymes and herbs that are aimed at reducing nasal congestion. There are various herbal pills on the market today, many of which contain a combination of Echinacea, Fenugreek and other herbs, as well as a blend of enzymes to help open up your airways. By opening up your airways, you help eliminate snoring--which is primarily emanated from your nasal cavity. Typically, taking one pill half hour before bed time will help alleviate snoring during the night, but to further aid the process, using a nasal strip across the bridge of your nose will help keep the nasal cavity clear and open.

Nasal sprays often contain similar ingredients to snoring pills, and are aimed at keeping your nasal cavity clear throughout the night. In addition to nasal sprays, some sprays can be applied directly under the tongue. Applying them under the tongue will help your body absorb the herbs faster and will have the same effectiveness as applying directly to the nose.

When to Seek Other Treatment

Herbs are a great way to alleviate many common ailments, however if you suffer from sleep apnea (when you stop breathing in your sleep, along with severe snoring) you should seek immediate care with a physician. While some of these herbs may work for some people, everyone is different and everyone responds differently to various herbs. If you find that none of these treatments are working, you may want to consult an herbalist to discuss various herbal options or a physician.

What Does A Sauna Do

A sauna is a steamy hot room where time is spent, followed by going into cold water. Its use is considered hygienic as well as beneficial for good health.

History

Hippocrates encouraged sweating as way to healing. And the ancient medical tradition of Ayurveda also promoted sweating as being beneficial to health. Other cultures also incorporated the sweat "house" for healing, community and spirituality.

Function

Being in a sauna with moist or dry heat results in an increase in the body temperature. The initial heat is dry heat, and then water is poured over heated rocks, resulting in a steam bath.

Benefits

The skin is the largest organ of the body, and the heat of the sauna results in sweating, which helps to purify the body. Saunas can be used to remove heavy metals from the body. The heat from a sauna helps improve circulation.

Warning

Heat may be too much for certain individuals such as the elderly, pregnant women, anyone with heart disease, or anyone who has been using alcohol or drugs.

Don't stay in longer than advised. You can faint from overheating. Also, use by children should be supervised. Re-hydration by drinking water is necessary since the sauna results in water loss. Be cautious if you have any medical condition, and consult with your physician if you are going to use a sauna.

Considerations

Certain kinds of saunas (such as the wood-burning Finnish sauna) generate negative ions.

Harvest Peppermint Oil

Harvest peppermint leaves when the plant begins to form buds.

Peppermint oil has a number of uses. When rubbed on your forehead and temples, it alleviates the symptoms of tension. When rubbed on the chest, it acts as a decongestant. When applied to poison oak rashes, it cools and soothes the skin. Peppermint oil is easy to make from peppermint leaves. Although peppermint oil is fairly safe to use, consult your physician or holistic health practitioner before using it to treat any illnesses or ailments.

Instructions

1. Harvest the peppermint leaves when the peppermint plant's flower buds begin to form. Do not remove more than 1/4 of an individual plant's leaves.

2. Chop the peppermint leaves into small pieces. The smaller you make the pieces, the more oil you will be able to extract.

3. Add the peppermint leaves to the jar. Pack them in up to the brim if you have enough leaves.

4. Heat the oil (you will need enough to just cover the peppermint leaves) to 160 degrees F.

5. Pour the oil over the peppermint leaves. Stir them gently to release any trapped air.

6. Screw the lid onto the jar. Store the jar in a dark, cool place for a minimum of one month.

7. Strain the peppermint leaves out of the oil. Store the peppermint oil in a cool, dark place when you're not using it.

What Does A Coated Tongue Mean

A healthy tongue should be medium pink, with no coating.

As a general rule of thumb, your tongue is supposed to be medium pink in color, with light to medium pink taste buds. If you have a coating on your tongue and you have good oral hygiene practices, you may have a health condition causing this.

Who Gets It?

People with a condition called 'geographic tongue' are more prone to developing problems with the tongue. Geographic tongue has lots grooves and cracks in it, so it makes for a great place for bacteria to live.

The Most Common Cause

The most common form of coated tongue according to Badbreathology.com is white tongue. White coating on the tongue is generally from poor oral hygiene, but can also be caused by colds and allergies.

Patchy White Coating

Patchy white coating on the tongue is caused by thrush. This is a form of an oral yeast infection. It is caused by medication side effects, diabetes and asthma. Patchy white coating can also be caused by leukoplakia.

Striped Coating

If you have white stripes on your tongue you may have a condition called Lichen Planus. This causes your tongue to be itchy or even itching elsewhere on the body.

When to See a Specialist

Anytime you develop a white-coated tongue that does not seem to go away with everyday good oral hygiene practices, you need to see your physician or dental practitioner.

What Plastics Are Recyclable

In order to determine if a plastic is recyclable or not, it is important to understand what the different numbers mean on the bottom of plastic products. Some are recyclable, some are not. In addition, some plastics can leach toxic chemicals. In addition to the following, a number 7 refers to "everything else." A number 7"is polycarbonate (PC) and has been known to leach bisphenol A.

Number 1

A number 1 on the bottom of a plastic product means it is polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE). It is recyclable through curbside programs and recycling facilities. A number "1" can be found on soft drink bottles, juice bottles and water bottles. It does not leach.

Number 2

A number 2 refers to high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and it is easily recyclable by curbside programs and recycling facilities. It does not leach, and it is found on the bottom of shampoo bottles and milk jugs.

Number 3

A number 3 is vinyl or polyvinyl chloride (PVC). This plastic is the least favorable and is not recyclable by any means. It can leach toxic chemicals and release harmful gases into the air. Examples are shower curtains, spray bottles, detergent bottles, children's toys and some cling wraps.

Number 4

A number 4 refers to low-density polyethylene (LDPE). This is found in shopping bags, baby bottles, some cling wraps and reusable food containers. This plastic has not been found to leach and is recyclable at most recycling facilities, but not often in curbside programs. Plastic shopping bags can be returned to grocery stores for recycling.

Number 5

A number 5 stands for polypropylene (PP). Some baby bottles, yogurt containers and reusable food containers fall into this category. It does not leach and is recyclable in recycling facilities and often in curbside programs.

Number 6

A number 6 means polystyrene (PS). This plastic is found in egg containers, plastic cutlery and food takeout containers. It can leach toxic styrene and has been banned in certain cities. Some recycling facilities will accept this plastic, but most curbside programs will not.

Clear Psoriasis Of The Scalp

Scalp psoriasis is a common skin condition affecting the scalp

Scalp psoriasis is a common skin condition of the scalp, which affects at least 50 percent of all individuals who suffer from psoriasis, according to the National Psoriasis Foundation. It results when the skin cells in the scalp grow too rapidly, forming red lesions that are covered with scales. Although the scalp is one of the trickiest places to treat psoriasis of the scalp, there are number of treatments for it.

Instructions

1. Purchase specially medicated shampoos from the pharmacy. The New Zealand Dermatological Society suggests either a coal tar shampoo or an antifungal shampoo such as ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione or ciclopirox. You may need to use the shampoos on a regular basis for a number of weeks before you see a benefit. Although they are safe for daily use, these shampoos may cause irritation if applied more than twice a week.

2. Treat scalp psoriasis with calcipotriene ointment, suggests the National Psoriasis Foundation. Calcipotriene ointment is a synthetic form of vitamin D3 that is formulated to slow down skin cell growth, remove scale and flatten lesions. Drugs.com suggests applying this cream topically twice a day, in the morning and evening. You may continue treatment for six to eight weeks or as directed by your doctor.

3. Clear up scalp psoriasis using corticosteroids if the psoriasis of the scalp is localized. A research study by Wake Forest University School of Medicine published in the Dermatology Online Journal in 2000 recommends applying a topical corticosteroid such as clobetasol. The research showed that following the application of topical clobetasol solution, there was between 80 percent and 100 percent improvement in two weeks for 80 percent of those undergoing treatment.

Massage Your Girlfriend

A massage can be an excellent way to ease your girlfriend when she is stressed and help relieve her tension. It can also be a sensual, romantic moment for you and your girlfriend. There are several steps you can take to make this experience one your girlfriend (and potentially you) a very enjoyable one. Here is massage your girlfriend.

Instructions

1. Set the right mood for the massage. Turn the lights down low and light some scented candles. Massaging your girlfriend doesn't have to be a completely clichéd event, though. You could allow her to watch her favorite TV show or a “chic flick” while you're giving her a massage.

2. Grab your girlfriend's favorite lotions and/or oils for her massage. This will do more than simply make her feel good. Using oils and lotions can make the massage easier for you, can better help to relieve your girlfriend's tension and hydrate her skin.

3. Begin by slowly rubbing the lotion and oils into your girlfriend's back. How gently or rough you do this will be based upon your girlfriend's wishes. Massage near her shoulders to relieve any knots she may have in the area. Use your thumbs primarily to rub her lower back. When massaging that portion of the back, place your thumbs together near her spine and rub away from the spine. Pretend that your thumbs are windshield wipers on a truck. That's how you should massage that portion of your girlfriend's back.

4. Use both of your hands to rub your girlfriend's arm. Do this gently as the muscles in the arm can be sensitive. Place one hand on the front of the arm and your other hand on the back of her arm and gently squeeze for a basic massage. When you get to her hand, place your four fingers on the back of her hand and your thumb on her palm. Gently rub her palm with your thumb in a circular motion. Then, take all five of your fingers and encircle one of her fingers. Beginning at the bottom of the finger, you should gently stroke up to the tip of the finger. Do this for all four fingers and her thumb. Once you've finished with one side, move to the other arm and repeat.

5. Begin massaging one of your girlfriend's feet. Treat the toes in the same manner that you did the fingers. Remember that you may have to be more gentle with your girlfriend's feet if she is ticklish. Don't forget to put extra lotion on her feet. The feet are often the most dry body part for anybody.

6. Massage your way up your girlfriend's leg up to her thigh. You should rub her legs in the same manner as you did her arms. Since you're rubbing her legs, however, you should squeeze a little harder. The muscles in the legs, after all, are stronger than the arms. Simply squeeze both the front and back of the legs. Rub lotion on her legs if you wish, if she asks or if you feel her skin needs to be moisturized.

Acupressure Tutorial

Acupressure points are the same as traditional Chinese acupuncture points.

Acupressure is a way of stimulating traditional Chinese acupuncture points without the use of needles. Instead of placing a needle in the acupuncture point to modify the flow of chi, pressure is placed on the same location, with more gentle results in the modification of chi flow.

Basics

Acupressure is the stimulation of pressure points, which are in the same places as acupuncture points, by pressure and massage. Acupressure points lie on meridians along which chi energy moves. Blockages along these meridians can result in a number of health problems, including problems with organ function and emotional well-being. Blocked chi meridians can also be the cause of chronic pain and fatigue. By clearing these blockages, either through acupuncture or acupressure, traditional Chinese medicine can treat a variety of maladies.

Techniques

There are two ways to manipulate pressure points. The first, pressing, is probably the best known. Pressure strengthens the chi at a particular point, while reduction weakens the chi.

Pressing on the point reinforces a weakness at that point. Often, a short press, of less than 30 seconds, can determine if the correct point is being manipulated. However, for maximum effect, pressure of at least 30 seconds is required. Often, pressure on a point for up to two minutes is recommended.

The second acupressure technique reduces, or weakens a pressure point. To reduce a point, rotate a finger over the point in a counterclockwise direction for between 30 seconds and two minutes.

Tools

There are a number of tools available for acupressure. The most simple is a finger or knuckle. However, fingers can often be too thick to accurately reach the pressure point and fingers sometimes get tired. Although there are a number of good commercially produced tools available, the eraser on the end of a standard yellow pencil works very well. Any tool that is 3 to 4 mm thick works well.

Risks & Warnings

Acupressure should not be used to treat serious injuries and should not be used to replace emergency care. Don't receive acupressure treatments within 20 minutes of performing heavy exercise, taking a bath, or eating a large meal. Don't use an acupressure point that is covered by a mole, wart or other skin lesion. Only accept acupressure treatment from a licensed practitioner if you are pregnant.

Massage & Breathing Treatments

A person is never too young to benefit from massage.

Stress is a normal part of everyday life. Even so, it can result in problems, such as muscle tension and aggravation of respiratory illnesses like asthma. Although there are medications, such as anti-anxiety drugs and inhalers that can ease these symptoms, it's far better to get rid of the stress than to mask the problem. Massage and breathing techniques are ways to do this.

What Is Massage?

Massage is an ancient art that involves the gentle pressing and rubbing of muscles of the body. Although dozens of massage types and techniques are in use, the basic premises of all massages are to relieve stress, get rid of muscle tension and pain, and to make a person more aware of themselves and their body.

Breathing Techniques

Breathing techniques can supplement any type of massage. They may involve having the client concentrate on the movement of the chest and abdomen as air enters and leaves the body, focusing on breathing and exhaling within a certain time frame or with a certain pattern, or visualizing and meditating how the breath is delivering oxygen to each cell of the body.

Massage and Breathing

Breathing techniques are used with massage therapy to deepen the relaxation of the client. Often when a person is tense, breathing techniques can help a person to consciously relax the muscles of the body. Conversely, as the therapist works on the client's muscles and they relax, the client is able to take more efficient, deeper breaths because the rib cage and abdominal muscles are not restricted with tension. There thus is a strong connection between massage therapy and breathing.

Medical Effects

Combining breathing techniques and massage can allow for deeper inhalations, thus ensuring that there is a higher intake of oxygen for body cells. The increase in oxygen can leave a person feeling less fatigued because oxygen is necessary for cells to have enough energy to do work. The improved circulation experienced from the muscle work in massage heightens this effect.

Some people may find that massage and breathing techniques relax the muscles of the respiratory system and surrounding tissues. This can be helpful for those suffering from conditions, such as asthma or upper body muscle spasms, that make deep inhalation difficult.

In general, breathing techniques and massage, because they are relaxing, can lower blood pressure, affect hormonal levels, provide better sleep and aid proper alignment of the body by providing means for muscles to disengage.

Considerations

Although massage therapy and breathing techniques have proven medical benefits, they also need to be approached with caution. Some people may find that being touched by a virtual stranger isn't helpful and actually makes them uncomfortable, in which case the benefits are negated because the person cannot relax fully. You need to find a technique and therapist with whom you are comfortable. Also, massage and breathing never should be seen as a complete substitute for other medical treatments, especially in the case of serious medical conditions.

Food Sources Of Probiotics

Probiotics are beneficial live microorganisms that reside in your digestive tract. They help maintain a healthy digestive system by decreasing the growth of harmful bacteria. Probiotics are often called "good bacteria" because of their health benefits.

Many Americans take probiotics to aid digestion or to treat conditions such as diarrhea, lactose intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease and yeast infections.

Many health food stores carry probiotics as dietary supplements, but they are also available in certain foods.

Types of Probiotics

When buying probiotic-rich foods, check product labels. There are two main groups of probiotics: Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. Each group has different species, and each species has different strains.

Some common probiotics include Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidus and Saccharomyces boulardii yeast.

Yogurt and Kefir

Some popular yogurt brands contain probiotics. For example, Dannon's Activia contains Bifidobacterium animalis, a probiotic that speeds digestion. When shopping for yogurt, look for products that feature the words "live" or "active" on the package. This means that the product contains living and active bacteria, which will promote digestive health.

The probiotics in yogurt include Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Streptococcus thermophilus and bifidobacteria.

Kefir is a creamy dairy drink similar to yogurt. It contains probiotics not usually found in yogurt, such as Lactobacillus caucasus.

Cheese

Select cheese products also contain probiotics, including Kraft's LiveActive natural cheese snacks (which contain the probiotic Bifidobacterium lactis) and Iavarone Bros. Specially Selected Amish Yogurt Cheese (prepared with the probiotic live cultures Lactobacillus acidophilus and bifid bacterium). Other good sources of probiotics include blue cheese and other aged cheeses.

Probiotic-rich cheeses often feature words such as "live culture," "active culture" or "probiotics" on the packaging.

Other Dairy Products

Other probiotic-rich dairy products include acidophilus milk and buttermilk. Like yogurt, kefir and cheese, acidophilus milk and buttermilk are produced by fermentation---a process in which lactic acid bacteria break down lactose (milk sugar) into lactic acid. Acidophilus milk is cultured with the probiotic Lactobacillus acidophilus, while buttermilk is often cultured with the probiotic Streptococcus lactis.

Nondairy Fermented Foods

Certain nondairy fermented foods are also rich in probiotics, including sauerkraut (fermented cabbage), kimchi (Korean spicy cabbage), tempeh (a fermented soybean product) and soy sauce.

The probiotics found in nondairy fermented foods include Lactobacillus planatarum, Lactobacillus brevis and Lactobacillus acidophilus.

When buying fermented food products, make sure the labels include words such as "live" or "active cultures." Many commercial brands of nondairy fermented foods, such as sauerkraut, do not contain probiotics.

Make Honey Bee Pheromones

Honeybees communicate with pheromones.

Honeybees communicate in several quite sophisticated ways. One of these is with pheromones --- scents that bees secrete to inform others where to go. If you want to catch a swarm of honeybees, pheromones in the swarm trap greatly increase your chance of success. Bees interpret the pheromones as a recommendation of the place by other bees. Beekeeping suppliers sell vials of honeybee pheromones but you can make an approximation yourself with essential oils. The key is citral which is found in lemongrass, lemon and lime essential oil. By itself or combined with geronial, which is found in rose, lemon and geranium oils, citral has a powerful effect on bees.

Instructions

1. Fill a vial or other small glass or plastic container with cotton wool.

2. Combine 10 drops of lemongrass essential oil with 5 drops of geranium and one drop of lemon or lime in a bowl and stir.

3. Drip the mixture into the vial. You can use a bit of cotton wool to soak up the last traces. Seal the vial if you do not plan to use it immediately.

4. Place the vial in the back of a swarm trap, removing the seal if necessary.

Make A Smudge Stick

Make a Smudge Stick

Smudging is a way to purify and clear negative energy and is often used to invoke positive energy in a particular environment, but can also be used to clear negative energy from one's body. A smudge stick can be made from pine, juniper, tobacco and a variety of other herbs and plants. The most common materials are cedar and sage.

Instructions

1. Gather small branches of cedar and sage, always asking the plant for permission, before cutting. It is a Native American custom to leave a small gift in place of what you take, for example a small portion of tobacco or a piece of your hair.

2. Choose the twine you will use to wrap the smudge stick. Use a natural material like cotton or hemp, and when possible select a red colored twine. Red is the most common color used in Native American ceremonies for its spiritual power.

3. Lie out your cuttings and form an easy to wrap bundle. Because cedar tends to shed and burn a bit faster than sage, it is best to bundle the cedar in the middle with the sage outside.

4. Tie a loop on one end of the twine and pass the other end through the loop to make a slipknot. Pick up the herb pile and place the slipknot loop around the bottom of the stems, pulling tight.

5. Wrap the twine around the smudge stick until you have reached the top. Be sure to keep a moderate tension. If the twine is too tight the smudge stick will not burn well, however if it is too loose your smudge stick will fall apart. When you have reached the top, reverse the direction, wrap again to the bottom, and tie a knot.

What Are The Causes Of Frequent Yeast Infections

Frequent yeast infections can mean more than irritation and inconvenience. Frequent yeast infections may be caused by serious conditions.

What Is a Yeast Infection?

Vaginal yeast infections in women are caused by an overgrowth of the yeast fungus known as Candida albicans. While yeast is always present in the vagina, an overgrowth of this yeast results in an infection.

Yeast infections can be caused by many factors, including taking medications such as antibiotics or oral contraceptives, hormonal changes, wearing tight clothing, or even eating lots of sugar.

The symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection include irritation, itching and burning of the vaginal area, vaginal discharge and pain during intercourse or when urinating.

Most women will experience a yeast infection at some point during their lives. However, frequent yeast infections can signal other conditions or problems that need treatment.

Causes

Frequent yeast infections can be caused by introducing chemicals or objects into the vagina that encourage the growth of fungus. This includes frequent douching, daily use of products such as feminine deodorant sprays and bath products that are in extended contact with the vagina (bubble baths, bath salts), and extended use of pads and tampons. To avoid frequent yeast infections caused by these factors, avoid the use of douches, sprays and bubble baths, and when using pads and tampons, change them frequently.

While avoiding the factors that cause vaginal yeast infections will often prevent them for most women, frequent yeast infections that cannot be prevented are often the result of medical conditions.

Medical Conditions

Medical conditions that suppress the immune system can cause frequent yeast infections. Among these conditions are:

Pregnancy;

Diabetes mellitus;

HIV/AIDS

Cancers being treated with immuno-suppressive drugs.

If you have frequent vaginal yeast infections, talk to your doctor about any other medical conditions that you may have that could be the cause.

Recurrent Vulvovaginal Candidiasis (RVVC)

If you are experiencing frequent yeast infections, see your doctor or health care professional. Your frequent yeast infections may be recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis. Although RVVC is most often a problem for women with diseases that suppress the immune system, RVVC can also occur in otherwise healthy women.

RVVC is often treated with an antifungal medication that is used for a duration of up to six months.

Response

Many women who experience symptoms associated with yeast infections treat themselves using over-the-counter medications. However, if you are experiencing the symptoms of yeast infections frequently, you may be exacerbating the problem by using these products, or you may not have a yeast infection, but rather another, potentially dangerous vaginal infection.

See your doctor or health care provider if you are frequently experiencing the symptoms of yeast infections in order to rule out other conditions.

What Chemicals Are In Sunscreen

Sunscreens are widely recommended when in the sun to protect against cancer and other skin damages. However, there is now evidence that suggests that the chemicals in sunscreen may do more damage to your body than the sun itself. There is also evidence suggesting these chemicals get stored in your body and may have long-term effects such as increasing cancer rates. There is also suggestion that these chemicals are entering the water systems, including the ocean, and causing a bleaching effect to coral reefs, thus causing them to die.

Cinnamates

Cinnamates found in sunscreen include: octyl methoxycinnamate, cinoxate, octocrylene and ethylhexyl p-methoxycinnamate. This group of chemicals absorbs ultraviolet rays.

Salicylates

Octyl salicylate, ethylhexyl salicylate and homosalate are all salicylates found in sunscreen. The FDA uses homosalate to measure the Sun Protection Factor (SPF).

Padimate O

Padimate O is an organic compound that absorbs ultraviolet rays. This chemical was initially widely used but due to consumer's allergic reactions and its ability to stain clothing, it has become less popular.

Octocrylene

Octocrylene is able to be used in gel form in sunscreens to absorb ultraviolet rays. This chemical must be combined with others to be effective.

Ensulizole

This chemical found in sunscreens does not block all ultraviolet rays and is water soluble.

Avobenzone

This chemical is absorbed through the skin easily and its effectiveness lasts about an hour.

What Is A Dental Crown

A dental crown is a specialized cap that is placed over a tooth. It is crafted to resemble a real tooth, and when it is in place, it covers the original tooth completely. Crowns are often used to strengthen weak or damaged teeth. If a tooth has a very large filling, a dental crown can give it the extra support it needs. Crowns can also be used to hide discolored teeth.

Function

Dental crowns are an alternative to dental fillings. They tend to be more effective for a number of reasons. One is that fillings are made on the spot; this means that the dentist has very less over the appearance of your tooth when the work is finished. Dental crowns are made at a specialty lab, with the help of accurate measurements of the tooth. This means that they fit the tooth perfectly and are much stronger, too.

Benefits

Strength is the biggest benefit of dental crowns. Fillings should generally not be greater than a third of the width of a given tooth. When the filling's size grows larger, the strength of the tooth is reduced. These teeth tend to run a greater risk of cracking and breaking. Using dental crowns in these cases not only means stronger teeth--the crowns themselves tend to be more durable than fillings.

Types

Dental crowns come in three different kinds. They are made out of either metal, porcelain, or a combination of metal and porcelain. Metal crowns, especially gold ones, have a number of advantages. They are very strong, rarely break, and they have a rate of wear that is similar to ordinary tooth enamel. Porcelain crowns are a stronger aesthetic choice but chip and break easily; in fact, they are not recommended for use on the molars. Crowns made of metal and porcelain have the good looks of porcelain and the strength of metal. However, the porcelain portion of such a crown can chip and wear down quickly.

Considerations

The biggest disadvantage with dental crowns is that you must be careful about how you bite and chew. Especially in the case of porcelain crowns, a hard bite can crack or break the crown. Apart from that, the underlying tooth does have to undergo certain invasive procedures to prepare it for a dental crown. Another factor to consider is cost--compared to getting an ordinary filling, crown work can be quite expensive.

Prevention/Solution

Dental crowns usually heighten the tooth's sensitivity to hot and cold substances. While this is normal, you should talk to your dentist if your tooth seems excessively sensitive. This could indicate an infection, which can be treated with antibiotics. The gums around the tooth may be sore for the first few days after placement. It's a good idea to rinse the mouth with warm salt water to help the damaged gum tissue heal quicker.

Convince Someone To Stop Smoking

Smoking is a nasty addiction that not only worsens the health of the smoker and also hurts those aroung them. Convincing someone to stop smoking despite the obvious risks, is tricky and is commonly difficult. Knowing some ways to go about convincing someone to stop smoking will help give you direction and will better the chances they will actually quit.

Instructions

1. Show them what their lungs look like. Many people either don't believe or can't visualize the harm and damage smoking does to their lungs. Showing them a picture will help them physically see what smoking does. Pictures of smokers lungs compared to healthy lungs can be found on the Internet and in some health books.

2. Make them aware of the health risks. Although it is hard to miss all the warnings on the packages and commercials on television, still make the smoker aware of the health risks involved with smoking. You may find that the smoker doesn't fully know the health risks they are taking. A heightened level of awareness also allows the smoker to be better equipped to resist urges, if they so choose to quit smoking.

3. Demonstrate to them who their smoking will impact (directly and indirectly). Anyone who is around a smoker may be forced to inhale second-hand smoke and this puts their health in jeopardy. If the smoker is a parent, tactfully express to them that their smoking could take away precious time with their children and loved ones.

4. Add up the savings. Observer how much they spend on cigarettes in a week and give them the figures for a year. Smoking is not only an unhealthy habit, it is also an expensive one. Money is a great motivating factor for most people and it may be just the boost they need.

5. Remain persistent. At times it may seem like you are not getting through but being consistently persistent is the key when trying to break an addiction. Refrain from backing down from your position or becoming an enabler. Giving up on the person will only let them know it was not that important for them to quit from the beggining.

6. Have an intervention. This may seem extreme but there is strength in numbers. Hiring a professional facilitator or counselor may be wise as this will make them take the event seriously. Be ready with lots of encouraging comments and to surround the person with support after they have been confronted.

Make A Meditation Pillow

When you are meditating, the whole point of the exercise is to clear your mind and feel relaxed. Meditating can call for you to sit for very long periods of time, in one position and place. It's imperative to have a good pillow that's made for this type of therapy for you to use. How can you meditate if you aren't comfortable? Of course, you can purchase your own, but making one isn't that hard to do. Read on for some tips in making your own meditation pillow.

Instructions

1. Figure out what size of meditation pillow you're going to need. You'll need to consider where you will be doing your meditation. If it's on the grass, you won't need such a thick pillow. If you do most of your meditating on a hard floor, then a thicker and more comfortable pillow is advised. Write down what measurements you believe will make a big enough pillow for you and add approximately 1.5 inches on all sides to allow for the seams.

2. Gather your supplies. You should be able to find buckwheat hulls for the inside of the pillow at a store that sells craft, meditation supply or yoga products. You can also order them online if you can't find them locally. You should be able to find your fabric at the craft store or local fabric store. Be sure to choose a fabric that's easily maintained and cleaned.

3. Cut out the two panels for your pillow covering per your measurements. Place the two panels with the right sides together and pin together. Sew a seam around three of the sides. On the last side sew only half the seam closed so you'll have room to fill it with the buckwheat hulls.

4. Turn the pillowcase right side out. You should end up with a square that's sewed together, with one seam left partially open. Fill the pillow with the amount of buckwheat hulls you desire to sit on. This is a personal preference, since the pillow is being made for your meditation use and comfort alone.

5. Fold the open seam toward the inside, once the pillow is filled, and pin together. Using your sewing machine, stitch the last portion of the seam together, closing it. You now have your own meditation pillow, handcrafted by you.

What To Do When You Have A Reaction To Collagen Injections

Collagen fillers are used to replace the natural protein lost as a result of the body's normal aging process. The treatments are not permanent, but can significantly improve the appearance of facial wrinkles, lines and creases. While results are immediate, it’s important to know that allergic reactions are reported to occur in every 2 out of 100 patients who receive the injections. Before opting for collagen treatments, you should carefully consider the risks so that you know what to do should an adverse reaction occur.

Instructions

1. Be aware beforehand that outcomes can be unpredictable. Prevention is the key. Taking the necessary steps before receiving collagen treatments can save you from suffering unpleasant adverse reactions. Consult a qualified plastic surgeon or dermatologist for advice. Be sure the physician has adequate knowledge about proper dosage, as well as selecting the appropriate injection sites.

2. Inform the treating physician about medical problems such as high blood pressure, any allergies, or a tendency to scar easily when he or she inquires about your medical history. Make sure an allergy skin test is performed to determine if you are eligible for collagen treatment. While most reactions occur within the first three days, your doctor should observe the injection site closely for four weeks. If itching, redness and/or swelling at the site occur, a second skin test may be required.

3. Discuss all the potential risks and side effects with your physician. Although complications typically are minimal, as with any medical procedure, an allergic reaction, infection, or scarring is possible. You should not receive treatments if you have an allergic reaction to the skin test. While most reactions are usually temporary, in some cases, flare ups have continued for more than two years.

4. Prepare yourself for feeling some minimal discomfort (e.g. minor stinging and burning) where the needle is injected. While the area often appears red during the first 24 hours after treatment, redness may remain for a week. Any swelling and/or bruising that occur usually diminish within 48 hours. More than slight bruising at the area should be reported to your doctor.

5. Avoid strenuous exercise for the the first 24 hours following treatment, as exercise can cause extreme redness in the face. While minimal post-op care generally is required, you should not drink alcohol or take aspirin for at least one day after treatment. If you do, you may increase the chance of bleeding and/or bruising at the site. Although most people are able to resume normal activities that same day, proper post-op care reduces the risk of side effects.

6. Apply ice or cool, wet cloths to the injection sites for up to 24 hours to reduce swelling and bruising. Elevate your head using pillows when you sleep at night to help reduce swelling. Even though in most cases you can expect some swelling for at least three days, swelling can last for up to two weeks. Take acetaminophen for mild discomfort and pain.

7. Report any severe pain, flu-like symptoms, or other abnormalities to your doctor immediately. Any redness or swelling that persists after a few days should be reported as well. Do not try to treat a severe reaction on your own. Seek medical help immediately. Symptoms that worsen within 1 to 3 days following treatment could be a sign of infection. Your doctor may have to prescribe antibiotic medication. It is important to note that while the risk for a serious reaction always exists, infection, abscesses, lumpiness and scars are rare.

8. Stay out of direct sunlight for several days following the procedure to prevent excess redness and irritation. If you choose to wear makeup soon after treatment, be sure the cosmetics offer sunblock protection.

9. Try not to expect too much too soon. You may not see results immediately. Remember that like with other medical procedures, your body needs time to heal.

Start A Senior Home Health Care Business

As the number of elderly people increases, so does the need for senior health care. Many times, senior-related infirmities keep the patients homebound and they find themselves in need of home health care. They may also prefer to receive their health care services at home, as they are more comfortable in familiar surroundings than in a hospital setting. This article will help you learn the steps necessary to start a senior home health care business.

Instructions

1. Consider whether you will start your own business or become part of a franchise. If you are starting your own business, consult with experts such as your local small business center or SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) for guidance on small business start-ups.

2. Research the license requirements in your city and state. Health regulations may include providing documentation about your workers' eligibility and certifications.

3. For a home health service, you will need to hire nurses and nurses' aides. Ask potential candidates about their experiences with the senior population, most of whom require care unique to their age and infirmities.

4. Determine the type and amount of insurance you will need for your business. At the very least you will need liability insurance, for performing health-related services in other people's homes. Your city or state may also require a minimum amount of liability insurance.

5. Set up a billing system for your patients and for insurance companies. Decide which insurance companies you will accept. You will have to work with Medicare, for the senior population. Secure the software necessary to do the billing and to communicate electronically with Medicare and supplemental insurance companies.

6. Promote your senior home health care business to doctors who specialize in geriatric care as well as to hospitals. Create simple brochures that explain your services and the certifications and licenses you and your staff carry.

The Meaning Of Green Tourmaline

Green tourmalines are prized for beauty and rejuvenating qualities.

Green tourmalines are valued for their beauty as gemstones, for their unusual ability to become electrically charged, and for what some believe are mystical powers to heal the body and the mind.

History

According to an ancient Egyptian legend, tourmalines passed over a rainbow on their ascent from the center of the Earth and took on all the beautiful colors of the spectrum. Indeed, the name tourmaline derives from the Singhalese word "turamali," which roughly translates to "stone of mixed colors." Green tourmaline is the classic color, and it is the most valuable for jewelry. Professional gemologists refer to green tourmaline as "verdelite."

Properties

Tourmalines have a special property called piezoelectricity, meaning they can acquire an electric charge when struck by an object or subjected to high pressure. Some people believe that by moving energy and thought to higher frequencies, green tourmalines restore strength of mind and spirit. According to Jewelry Gems About, "Of all the precious gemstones, green tourmalines are said to have the most powerful rejuvenating properties."

Additional Benefits

Some people believe that tourmalines possess the additional metaphysical properties of protection and purification. They believe green tourmalines are receptive stones that strengthen the life force and compassion while promoting creativity, positive thinking and self-confidence.

Spiritual Benefits Of Tulsi

Spiritual Benefits of Tulsi

Tulsi is recognized not only as a spiritual adornment of Hindu worshipers and yoga practitioners, but as one of the most revered medicinal and spiritual herbs of the ancient East. Every part of the "holy basil" from root to leaf is used to make healing essential oils, tea, incense, jewelry and spiritual adornments. You can cook with the plant or nibble on the leaves. Simply seeing or touching the plant brings divine energy into the bodies and lives of those in its presence.

Offering

Tulsi leaves are not only traditional aspects of ritualistic Hindi worship, they are mandatory. Worship of Lord Vishnu, Lord Krushna and Pandurang require the presence of tulsi, especially the leaves which are given to the deities in exchange for pardons of karma and purification of mind, body and environment. In the sacred Hindu text, the Padmapuran, it is said that, "offering flowers made of gold, stones and pearls do not have even one sixteenth of the importance of Tulsi." The sacred offering of naivedya, a food offering to the gods, the tusli leaf is used as a medium to deliver the energy of the physical food into divine energy.

Healing

Tusli has been recognized as a powerful healing tool for centuries. It cleanses the body of toxins and disease-causing bacteria and parasites, even credited with spontaneous healing. The antibacterial, antiseptic and antiviral properties boost immune functions, and high levels of vitamins, iron, chlorophyll and phytonutrients give tulsi its reputation as an overall health and longevity tonic.

Mental Clarity

According to the Chopra Center, tulsi has similar neurological effects to antidepressants and works as a powerful daily stress buster. Wearing, drinking or breathing tulsi is thought to improve mental stamina and prevent negative emotions.

Mythology

In the Hindu religion, the tulsi plant is seen as a great protector and the incarnation of the goddess, Tulsi. The Hindu religious text, Padma Purana, says,"Wherever the aroma of the Tulasi is carried by the wind, it purifies the atmosphere and frees men and animals from baser tendencies." According to the Vedic Cultural Society, several studies have given scientific validity to such claims, showing that tusli actually releases ozone, 03 rather than normal oxygen, O2.

Prayer

The woody stalks of the plant are made into rosaries and meditation malas. Adorning the body with necklaces and bracelets of tulsi is said to protect the wearer. Sending prayers through the beads anoints the prayer with sacred energy and sanctifies its divine delivery.

Ayrveda

The ancient Ayurvedic healing modality acknowledges tulsi as a pacifier of the body's subtle energies, calming Kapha as well as Vata and Pitta. Ayurvedic medicine takes advantage of the many restorative and disease-fighting properties to treat a range of illness from coughs to cancer.

Stanozolol

Stanozolol is among the anabolic steroids currently banned under illegal drug scheduling in the United States. The drug is sold under the brand name Winstrol, and it is available with a doctor's prescription for certain conditions. Setting it apart from other common anabolics, Stanozolol does not come attached to an ester, making it one of the fastest working steroids.

Function

Stanozolol was not created for use as an anabolic steroid. Its original purpose was for treating animals and humans for other conditions. These conditions include anemia and weakened red blood cell production. It has also seen some success in treating those with muscle wasting conditions, such as AIDS.

Banned Substance

Because it increases muscle mass and has been classified as an anabolic steroid, stanozolol is banned from almost every athletic organization in the country. This includes the Olympics, the NFL and other athletic organizations that do drug testing.

Stacking

Stanozolol is often used as part of a "stack" of anabolic steroids in the bodybuilding community. This is because--by itself--stanozolol is not nearly as powerful a muscle builder as other anabolics, such as testosterone or trenbolene. However, it is used to bring out vascularity (protruding veins) and it does not convert to estrogen in the body.

Cutting

Though the jury is out scientifically on whether stanozolol has any fat burning properties, it is often used for this reason by athletes and bodybuilders. It is difficult to drop weight while maintaining muscle mass, and all steroids tend to help preserve this muscle when the athlete puts themselves in calorie deprivation.

Dosing

Stanozolol comes in either pill or injectable liquid form (though many athletes choose to drink the injectable form, since it is not attached to an ester). The pills usually come in 5 mg doses, while the injectables are 50 mg per milliliter. The most common dosing for bodybuilders or others using the drug as an anabolic steroid is 50 mg per day.

Post Partum Depression Symptoms

According to the Mayo Clinic, 10 percent of new mothers suffer from postpartum depression (PPD). PPD differs from the baby blues, in that the baby blues typically end within a few weeks, and PPD is intensified and can linger for several months.

Difficulty Sleeping

While new mothers are often kept awake by the new baby, if they have trouble resting while their baby is sleeping, it may be a warning sign of PPD.

Fears of Hurting the Baby

Mothers with PPD sometimes worry that they may hurt their new baby, because they do not believe they can care for him sufficiently. They may worry that they may drop her while feeding her, or they may be afraid that they'll kill her in a depressive episode.

Intense Emotions

While most mothers may be emotional or teary after the new birth, if they start experiencing frequent panic attacks or extreme crying spells, they should call their doctor.

Difficulty Bonding with Baby

Because of all the intense emotions and fear, mothers with PPD may not develop a relationship with their child. They may feel more guilt because of this, just making the cycle of depression worse.

Withdrawal from Family

Mothers may isolate themselves from their families and friends because they are feeling depressed and because they feel their families will judge them for not being overly loving with the baby right away.

Recommended Treatment For A Sprained Ankle

Nearly everyone knows the pain of an ankle sprain. The moment it occurs, a shooting pain leads to grimacing, frustration and sometimes cursing. Ankle sprains are common injuries, and the body ordinarily bounces back from them without permanent damage or prolonged pain. If you suffer an ankle sprain, though, you want quick recovery, and that is certainly possible. You can speed the healing process by following a few recommended treatments.

Diagnosis

Ankle sprains range from mild to severe, and treatment varies. Your doctor can help you determine the severity of a sprain, but self-evaluation might be all that you require for diagnosis. Consider the severity of the injury based upon the degree of swelling and the intensity of the pain. If you experience sharp pain when your ankle is not bearing weight, you might have a more serious injury.

Painkiller

While pain medicine does not heal an ankle sprain, it does provide some relief while you recover by dulling or numbing the pain. In most cases, you only need to take over-the-counter medications containing ibuprofen, naproxen or acetaminophen. If you have a severe sprain, your doctor might prescribe a mild painkiller.

RICE

The acronym stands for rest, ice, compression and elevation, and that is just what you need to heal most ankle sprains. Stay off your feet as much as possible to give your ankle time to heal and treat it with ice. You can tape ice packs or zip-seal bags of ice to your leg. Be sure you are applying the ice directly to the area with the most swelling. You also can soak your foot in a bucket of ice water.

Compression requires you to wrap your foot. Use bandages or athletic tape to wrap your ankle. If such products are not available, a tight-fitting sock provides some compression. Elevate your foot as much as possible. Position yourself on a sofa or bed and use blankets or pillows to prop up your foot. If you must sit in a chair, you can place your foot on a footstool, ottoman or the seat of another chair.

Physical Therapy

The muscles surrounding your ankle ligaments are often tender and loose after an ankle injury. To retrain your muscles, perform low-impact exercises that emphasize flexibility, balance, strength and range of motion. Standing on one leg is one potential exercise. If you intend to perform high-impact exercises, you might consider using an ankle brace or a wrap to help support the ankle and protect it from re-injury.

Uses For Rose Quartz

The pink crystal known as rose quartz has a reputation as the love stone.

In The Encyclopedia of Crystals, crystal expert Judy Hall describes rose quartz as a "stone of unconditional love and infinite peace . . . the finest emotional healer." She also notes that it can assist in healing a variety of illnesses including Alzheimer's, kidney problems, lung problems, Parkinson's disease and vertigo as well as skin conditions including blistering and wrinkles. You can access the healing benefits rose quartz offers by using it in a variety of ways.

Wand

Many crystal healers recommend using a specially shaped crystal called a wand. Its elongated shape, narrower at one end and wider at the other, makes it easy to hold and to point in a way which directs and focuses the healing vibrations. A rose quartz wand helps relieve emotional pain and stress. By doing this, the wand can heal on both an emotional and physical level, easing a broken heart and extracting the energetic imbalance which helped create an opening for physical ailments. Move the wand slowly over the portion of the body which houses the pain. You can use a crystal wand on yourself, or to help someone else heal. Some massage therapists use wands as aids in easing a client suffering from extreme tension or emotional distress.

Pendulum

A pendulum suspends a crystal or other object at the end of a short chain. The user asks questions and the direction in which the pendulum swings helps reveal the answer, coming from the user's higher wisdom or spirit guides. A rose quartz pendulum will create a focused energy of love and can be used to help seek guidance on questions about relationships and love, to help locate lost pets or to read the energy of pets and children.

Sleep Stone

One way to absorb the healing energy of a crystal is to sleep with a small stone under your pillow or on your night stand. Judy Hall suggests, "Place a chunk of rose quartz by your bed to attract love into your life." The healing vibrations of crystals may also enable you to fall asleep more easily.

Jewelry

Another way to hold the stone's powerful healing energy close to you over the course of several hours is to wear jewelry containing rose quartz. You can buy rings, bracelets, earrings and necklaces which use this stone. You will find many heart-shaped pendants fashioned from this love stone crystal. Wearing rose quartz, particularly next to your heart, will help you recover from grief and other forms of deep emotional pain.

What Is Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a massage therapy that originated in Japan. It is based on the premise that energy channels called meridians run through the body. By using shiatsu (finger pressure), energy in the meridians is affected in a positive way. Shiatsu can be used to relieve stress and promote relaxation. It should not be administered to people with acute illnesses, high blood pressure, different kinds of chronic fatigue syndromes, heart conditions and cancer. Pregnant women should also contact their health provider about the risks before receiving this treatment.

Purpose

Although categorized as massage, shiatsu is a form of acupressure used to help the body heal itself naturally.

What It Does

Daisy Cole, author of the book "Shiatsu," claims that applying shiatsu can relax and energize a subject, reduce stress and increase mental clarity.

Hara Assessment

The area between the ribcage and the hips is called the hara. This is the area the shiatsu practitioner palpates to assess the patient's condition of health.

Yin and Yang Energy Assessment

The shiatsu practitioner will determine which shiatsu techniques to use on a patient by assessing her yin and yang energy.

Elemental Assessment

When a shiatsu practitioner administers shiatsu, he will determine which of the water, earth, fire, metal, wood elements stand out to treat the corresponding meridian.

Technique

The shiatsu practitioner will use his palms, thumbs, fingertips and elbows when performing shiatsu, along with various body stretches and manipulations.

Ankle Fracture Symptoms

Ankle fractures may be misdiagnosed as simple sprains due to the similarity between symptoms. However, the type, duration and intensity of symptoms help correctly diagnose a broken ankle.

Discoloration and Pain

Pain will occur at the site of the fracture and travel up and down the leg. The pain will increase with activity and decrease with rest. The ankle may turn a dark shade of blue-green or be off-color in general.

Significant Swelling

An ankle fracture will have significant, bulbous swelling. The swelling will be localized or may travel up the length of the leg and will persist for three or more days.

Inability to Walk or Bear Weight

A fracture will make it very difficult to walk due to pain. The patient may even have problems bearing weight.

Deformity

The ankle may be deformed or look out of place. A deformed ankle is the sign of a severe fracture, and the patient needs to see a doctor as soon as possible.

Treatment

The doctor will diagnose the ankle by applying pressure or moving the ankle a certain way. He will use an X-ray, bone scan or CT scan to be sure that the ankle is fractured. Depending on the severity of the fracture, the doctor may immobilize the ankle or perform surgery to heal the foot.

Iridologists

Iridologists are purported to have the ability to identify potential physiological problems of their clients by analyzing the pupil, iris and whites of the eyes. Through close examination of the eyes and a comparison with a standard chart, the iridologist attempts to determine illness in various parts of the body such as the internal organs or glands. Iridology is a diagnostic approach used by some in the field of alternative medicine in the United States and is extensively practiced in Europe.

Function

The iridologist closely examines the natural shape of the pupil; patches and marks within the iris; and patterns called lacunae, collarettes, radials and other details within the actual color of the eye. Iridologists employ a detailed diagram of both the left and right eye that indicates which portion of the iris corresponds with which individual organ or tissue within the body. In addition to physiology, the eye is thought to give insights into the personality and behavior of the subject. Iridology is used only for diagnosis and provides no treatment.

History

Using the iris to detect illness and disease has roots that go back more than a thousand years to the ancient Chaldeans and has more modern uses in Chinese and Japanese medicine. Modern iridology began in the 18th century and came into practice in the U.S. around the turn of the 20th century. Iridology is not recognized as a legitimate medical approach by the current American medical establishment, but it is popular among many who use alternative approaches to medicine.

Features

Iridology is thought to provide early diagnosis of specific illnesses that could not be detected any other way. Clinicians employ this noninvasive practice particularly due to its ability to provide insight into the body without drawing blood, taking biopsies or conducting exploratory surgery. Many view iridology as a useful tool employed as part of an exam. The clues provided by the iris can be examined in more detail with sophisticated diagnostic equipment.

Types

There are two fundamentally different schools of iridology that grew out of a single philosophy. During World War II American iridologists were unable to gain access to the research done by German iridologists, causing the two approaches to grow apart. Consequently the focus and approach of the American and European forms of iridology are different. This is also a function of the political and philosophical approaches to medicine that differ dramatically between the U.S. and Europe.

Considerations

Iridology is a very narrow field of study and does not qualify a practitioner to treat, diagnose or offer cures of any type. The laws regarding medical advice are very strict, and unless an iridologist has obtained a proper license he is allowed only to provide educational information. Those seeking the advice of an iridologist should be aware of the education, background and reputation of the provider and make a decision only after studying these and relevant medical criteria.
