Eft Technique For Emotional Freedom

The Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT, can be used to cope with both mental and physical problems. It is a form of healing that depends on energy. Testimonies at Tapping.com and EmoFree.com by those who have used EFT state that using this technique has helped to reduce their time in therapy for a variety of situations. Because this is an energy healing technique, it has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration or other medical boards since there is no drug to test or evaluate.

What is EFT?

EFT is the process of using tapping to help with one's emotional issues. Tapping is sort of like acupuncture without the use of needles, combined with meditation and hypnosis. Tapping is not an involved therapy and it can be learned in a matter of minutes with the right instruction. Tapping is simply the process of using one's fingertips to tap and stimulate different points on the body. The specific emotional situation you are dealing with will determine the points for tapping. The points chosen for tapping are based on previous discoveries regarding the human body's connection with energy, emotions and health. It has been reported that tapping works in situations where nothing else has worked in the past.

Technique

EFT usually involves beginning with a specific chant while you rub the pressure point at the base of your shoulder and arm. Generally, you should begin by saying something like "Although I have this ailment, I accept myself in the Universe." Name the specific ailment. You should repeat this chant several times, while tapping or rubbing each of the specific pressure points associated with your particular ailment. Common pressure points include the top of the head, the forehead, the base of the neck, the collarbone and the cheeks. The specific locations and exact phrasing depend on your type of ailment, so you should consult with someone who understands the technique, or do specific study on your own to determine the appropriate method for the particular illness you are trying to cure.

When EFT Should Be Used

The Emotional Freedom Technique is useful in many situations. Tapping.com suggests that tapping has proven successful for people dealing with weight loss issues. The technique has also helped people to face the challenge of emotional stresses pertaining to other conditions such as ADHD, eating disorders, fears, phobias, allergies, asthma and other similar conditions. EFT is also beneficial for dealing with more stressful situations such as sexual abuse, child abuse, spousal abuse and all other types of abuse.

Tighten Loose Skin After Liposuction

When you have liposuction, excess fat is removed via a vacuum-like device. Liposuction solely removes fat; it does not tighten your skin. Whereas certain cosmetic surgeries such as tummy tucks remove excess skin, liposuction does not. Directly following liposuction, your skin will appear loose. There are, however, things you can do to tighten it. Be patient, as it does take time.

Instructions

1. Consider the area where you had liposuction performed. The skin on most body areas will tighten over time, however, certain areas are more prone to loose skin. If you had liposuction on your upper arms, stomach or neck, you are more likely to experience stubborn baggy skin after the procedure.

2. Have surgery. If you have loose skin on your stomach, neck or upper arms, you may need surgery to effectively tighten it. The removal of loose skin involves major surgery, so fully discuss the risks with your doctor before moving forward with plans for it.

3. Get cardiovascular exercise. Regular exercise increases circulation, allowing nutrients to more readily reach your skin. Aim for at least 20 minutes of brisk cardiovascular exercise daily to tighten your skin.

4. Lift weights. If you build and tone your muscles, your loose skin will be less noticeable. Lifting weights will also help to restore elasticity into the skin. Aim to lift weights two to three times weekly for best results. Choose weight-lifting exercises which target the specific body area where you'd like to tighten your skin. For example, squats and lunges work well to improve loose skin on the buttocks, hips and thighs. Bicep curls and tricep dips work well for loose skin on the upper arms.

5. Drink water. If you aren't properly hydrated, your skin is more likely to sag. Keep skin hydrated by drinking at least 64 ounces of water daily.

6. Use a skin-firming lotion. You can find such lotions in most cosmetic and beauty supply stores (see Resources). They often contain ingredients such as caffeine which help to tighten and lift skin. With regular application, you may notice your skin looking firmer. You must continue using such lotions to maintain their results.

7. Massage the skin daily. Massage encourages circulation, helping to restore skin's elasticity. Use firm pressure to massage the area daily for two to three minutes.

Safety Inspection Procedures

Risk Assessment

The purpose of safety inspections in the workplace is to identify and correct any situations that might cause accidents to employees or to the public. Conducting regular inspections is one of the most effective ways to recognize potential hazards in the workplace, making the process a critical component of any workplace safety program. Inspections should include close examination of equipment used, in addition to evaluating how well employees comply with workplace standards and procedures while performing their routine duties.

Inspection Team

Most inspection teams include a safety adviser, workplace supervisor and a union representative when applicable. These individuals are responsible for carrying out regular inspections of the physical premises and equipment as well as observing how work processes are being carried out. Using a checklist, the safety team looks for particular hazards assessing any deficiencies and/or unsafe conditions identified on the list. Problems are usually ranked in order of their significance. The risk management team records details of the inspection, describing each hazard before presenting an official report to the safety committee. In addition, the inspection team is accountable for making specific recommendations for correcting any situations identified on the report that may create a threat. In many cases, a safety team will also point out sound safety practices that the team identifies during the course of an inspection.

Safety Committee

A safety committee is responsible for determining how frequently the workplace environment will be inspected. A committee of employees across all levels of the organization's hierarchy helps to develop the safety checklists, which the inspection team uses to conduct inspections. Common hazards are identified on the checklists along with areas in the workplace known for a high incidence of accidents. In many cases, the safety committee is also responsible for developing control measures for assessing any risks identified in the workplace. Follow-up of the corrective actions taken is then tracked and progress determined.

Ranking Hazards

Most safety inspections have a procedure in place for classifying hazards. The inspection team may place high priority on reporting a hazard that requires immediate action to correct an unsafe condition or act, particularly one that could cause serious accidents. An example of a high-risk hazard is defective machinery or equipment, or an employee not using equipment correctly. Other hazards identified by the risk assessment team might not necessarily pose an immediate threat, but should be addressed as soon as possible. Although low hazard risks do not require urgent action, they should still be dealt with in a timely manner in order to prevent potential injury or harm to others.

What Is The Accuracy Of A Breathalyzer Test

A Breathalyzer is used to test for alcohol content in a person driving a car.

A Breathalyzer is a machine used to measure blood-alcohol levels in people suspected of driving an automobile under the influence of alcohol. Due to the strong penalties for a conviction and the importance attached to the results of the Breathalyzer test, the accuracy of the device's readings is an ongoing source of controversy.

History

Throughout the years, Breathalyzers have become crucial to enforcement of alcohol and driving laws.

Although often used generically, Breathalyzer is the brand name for a machine to measure blood-alcohol content. It was developed and manufactured by Smith and Wesson in the 1950s. Today there are other machines that perform the same function, such as Intoxilyzer, Intoximeter and Alcosensor, manufactured by different companies. These devices are essential tools in the enforcement of laws against driving after consuming alcohol. They must be accurate or they cannot serve their purpose.

Significance

The magic number: 0.08.

The legal system has come to rely upon the Breathalyzer in the enforcement of alcohol-related crimes involving automobiles. Law enforcement officers are still important, but the Breathalyzer and its accuracy are built into the law. If the Breathalyzer reading is 0.08 or more, the presumption is that the operator is impaired by alcohol. The federal government in 1998 created financial incentives for states to adopt the .08 standard. Until then, each state had its own standard and some were higher than 0.08.

Function

The Breathalyzer is a machine, and its accuracy depends upon two factors: proper function and human operation. The second factor is pretty straightforward. A Breathalyzer is only as accurate as the operator. After a person blows air into the Breathalyzer's mouthpiece, a chemical reaction takes place which measures the blood-alcohol content. The operator must ensure that the person properly blows into the Breathalyzer. The final step involves the operator turning the knob on the Breathalyzer to obtain the correct reading. This is crucial and human error can occur, especially in a case that is borderline 0.08. The first factor is more complex. The Breathalyzer must be properly maintained and tested periodically to ensure its accuracy. Like any machine, it must function properly in order to fulfill its intended use.

Considerations

A blood test is more accurate than a Breathalyzer.

A Breathalyzer is not as accurate as a blood test. According to Alcohol Test Info, the Breathalyzer can vary as much as 15 percent from the actual blood-alcohol concentration. There are many reasons for the variation, the main being that the Breathalyzer is measuring alcohol levels from breath as opposed to blood. The alcohol is in the blood, so testing the blood will be more accurate.

Misconceptions

The accuracy of a Breathalyzer is determined in a court of law.

The accuracy of a Breathalyzer relates to how the machine functions. The law is now that a 0.08 reading on a Breathalyzer is a presumption of driving under the influence. Therefore all that matters to sustain that presumption is that the Breathalyzer machine is properly functioning and that the operator made no mistakes during the testing. That does not mean that guilt is determined by the Breathalyzer. The presumption can be rebutted by evidence that the driver was not driving under the influence of alcohol. So while the Breathalyzer is important, it is not the final word.

What Is Kyanite Used For

What Is Kyanite Used for?

Kyanite gets its name from the Greek word kyanos, which means blue. Although blue is the most commonly found color and the most sought, kyanite can be found in green, colorless, white, gray and black. Kyanite is a beautiful mineral and is used as a gemstone, but it's most sought for its refractory properties.

Uses In Ceramics

Kyanite is strong and heat resistant. These two properties make it highly popular in the ceramics world. It's used in kiln construction in bricks and mortar. It's often mixed with porcelain for everyday items including sinks, dentures and dishware. It's used as grog (ceramic filler) because it's highly shrink resistant and great for filling cracks.

Uses In Metal Smelting

Kyanite can withstand temperatures over 1100 degrees C. Resisting such high temperatures makes kyanite ideal for a mold or container for molten metal. Kyanite is often used in monolithic refractories for smelting iron and steel.

Used With Abrasives

Though kyanite itself isn't used as an abrasive, its interlocking grain structure makes it ideal as a binding agent for abrasive substances. Kyanite might be used to hold a grinding wheel together, for example.

Gemstones

Kyanite is known as an anisotropic mineral, meaning it has a hardness lengthwise of between 4 and 5 on the Moh Scale and between 6 and 7 crosswise. This discrepancy makes it difficult to cut and thus rare as a gemstone. Perhaps because of its deep blue color and rarity, it's popular among collectors of exotic gemstones.

Spiritual Uses

Kyanite is one of the few minerals that never needs spiritual cleansing. It repels negative energy, making it perfect for promoting mental clarity. Kyanite opens your mind to learning, aids in creative expression and helps you gain inner peace.

Proven Mole Removal Method

Professional mole removal can be costly, especially since most health insurance companies consider mole removal a "cosmetic surgery" that is not necessary in most instances. Here is a proven mole removal method that is likely to get rid of the mole without a doctor's assistance.

What You Will Need

You will need a needle, along with a match or lighter to sterilize the needle. The main ingredient is apple cider vinegar (preferably organic), a small bottle will do, usually costing just a few dollars. Grab some cotton balls as well, and bandages are optional. The most expensive ingredient for this process is honey. If you don't have honey on hand, purchase the smallest bottle you can find, since you will only need a small amount.

The Procedure

First, sterilize the needle with a flame. Run the flame over the tip of the needle for 20 to 30 seconds, and let the needle cool. Use the needle to scrape across the top layer of the mole, just enough to break the skin open. Soak a cotton ball with the apple cider vinegar, and rub it over the mole for about one minute. Another option is to dampen a small piece of cotton with apple cider vinegar, place it over the mole, and hold it in place by covering it with a small bandage. You will not need to break the skin of the mole again, but repeat the apple cider vinegar application two to three times a day. After a few days you will see a scab begin to form over the mole. Continue the application for a few more days, until the scab begins to fall off on its own.

After the Mole has Been Removed

As the skin under the scab begins to heal, you should notice the mole is no longer there. After all of the excess skin from the scab has fallen off, dab a small drop of honey over the affected area. This will help the healing process and prevent scarring. Repeat the honey application until the skin has healed back to its normal condition, usually about five to seven days.

Cope With A Teen'S Death

Cope With a Teen's Death

Losing a friend or family member is devastating, and when coping with a teen's death you may experience a variety of emotions. There may be sadness, anger, depression and even guilt. The grieving process may last a few months or it may last a lifetime. Follow these steps to begin coping with a teen's death.

Instructions

1. Write down feelings and emotions in a journal. Express your concerns, worries and maybe even the guilt you are experiencing. Writing down these feelings will help in the healing process. If talking to someone is not an option, journaling can help if you wish to express an emotion or a concern.

2. Crying helps when coping with a teen's death. It releases emotions, allowing the body and the mind to heal. Withholding tears and feelings can ultimately cause an increase in sadness and depression, which may lead to an even longer healing process.

3. Talk to others about the teen's death, how you feel and any guilt you may be experiencing. It's not good to hold these emotions inside. You may choose to confide in a trusted friend, family member, therapist or even a member of your church community.

4. Accept the feelings and emotions. You do not have to like what is going on around you but acknowledging what happened and how you plan on dealing with it, is a step in the right direction. It may take days, months or even years to accept the death of a teen.

5. Avoid taking drugs or abusing alcohol as this will only magnify the depression and anger you may be feeling. Find other avenues of release such as exercising, calling a friend, writing in your journal and even looking at old photographs.

What Is Electro Osmotic Consolidation

Electro osmotic consolidation helps remove and regulate water in soil.

Soils such as clay are not very porous, and water has a difficult time moving through it. The scientific process of electro osmotic consolidation helps move water through the soil.

How It Works

Electrodes are placed in clay soil about 1 to 2 meters apart, and an electrical current is applied. The water molecules are attracted to the cathode of the electrode and will progress from one electrode to the other until the end of the electrode line.

Purpose

Soil with high concentrations of water is difficult to build on and any structures will not be adequately supported; they may even sink. By taking water out of the soil, it is better able to bear loads and weight.

Considerations

While the process of electro osmotic consolidation has been successful, it can be costly, depending on how long the water has to travel. It may require a significant number of electrodes and a high level of electric current.

What Is Dissection Microscope

Dissecting microscopes allow 3-dimensional specimens, such as small insects, to be observed under a low magnification. They also are used in forensic science to compare the striation marks on bullets to see if they are fired from the same gun.

History

The dissecting microscope was developed in the field of forensic science in the 1920s to assist with the analysis of fired bullets and cartridge cases.

Description

A dissecting microscope allows large objects or specimens to be observed and compared under low magnification, and it can be used as a tool in dissections.

Additional names

A dissecting microscope also can be called a stereo microscope or comparison microscope.

Considerations

In addition to the dissecting microscope, a light source called an illuminator is needed to direct light onto the specimen being studied.

Benefits

A dissecting microscope allows specimens that considered to too largefor a compound microscope to be studied.

Disadvantages

A dissecting microscope does not permit a specimen to be magnified as much as a compound microscope.

Prevent And Get Rid Of Cold Sores

Prevent and Get Rid of Cold Sores

Cold sores, also called fever blisters or herpes is a common affliction that comes on by sickness, high temperature and stress. Fever blisters can be quite the social inconvenience but the good news is that they are treatable and preventable. Here's how.

Instructions

1. When you first feel your symptoms coming on, (red, itchy, and tingling area on lips/mouth) go to your kitchen and grab some ice. Yes, ice! Many times if you catch your blisters early before they manifest on your mouth and lips, you can place an ice cube on the area and it will go away. The herpes virus (non-sexual mouth type) remains dormant in our bodies and it waits for a stressful situation to occur before it will show up. Many times, being overheated alone can cause a flair-up of herpes. The ice cube works to lower your temperature at the exact point of inflammation.

2. The next time you feel an outbreak coming on you can also head to your medicine cabinet and take an acetaminophen tablet or capsule. Tylenol will do the trick as it works to lower your body temperature. Again, many times when we have outbreaks our body temperatures become a little elevated which makes the virus easier to surface.

3. Go to your doctor and ask for a prescription medication like Zovirax or Acycolvir to treat your cold sores. This medication comes in pill and cream form. The cream can be applied directly to your lips (but has a very bad taste) or you can orally take the Acycolvir capsules that help get rid of your cold sores. Your doctor will help to find the right dose for your individual situation.

Kyphosis Symptoms

Kyphosis, more commonly known as hunchback, is a condition that causes exaggerated rounding up the upper spine. While some rounding of the back is a normal part of the aging process, rounding that exceeds 40 degrees is considered kyphosis. There are various types of kyphosis, each demonstrating slight differences in symptoms. In the most mild form, the spine may look relatively normal, while more aggressive forms cause the growth of a hump, severe problems with lung, nerve and organ function as well as severe pain.

Causes

Kyphosis most often occurs as the result of other developmental or degenerative problems. Various types of arthritis are the most common cause, such as osteoporosis and degenerative arthritis, which increase the risk of vertebral slipping and fracture that then cause abnormal rounding of the spine. Connective tissue problems, such as Marfan syndrome, can also lead to kyphosis, as the body's ability to maintain joints in their natural position decreases.

Spinal infection, such as tuberculosis, tumors that press on the spine, birth defects like spina bifida or conditions that lead to paralysis such as polio and cerebral palsy can also lead to kyphosis.

Scheuermann Kyphosis

Scheuermann kyphosis, or Scheurermann disease, generally begins in adolescents between 10 and 15 years of age, while bones are continuing to develop. This disease causes kyphosis as the vertebrae become deformed, taking on a wedge-like shape as opposed to a rectangular shape. This form of kyphosis is twice as likely to occur in boys than in girls.

Congenital Kyphosis

When the spinal column does not develop properly during fetal growth, kyphosis can be present at birth. In this form of kyphosis, vertebrae may fuse together and/or may not develop normally. Congenital kyphosis usually gets worse with age and can often lead to paraplegia, or lower body paralysis.

Hyper-Kyphosis

Hyper-kyphosis, or postural kyphosis is another type of kyphosis that develops during adolescence; however, this type is less common in boys than girls. Progression of hyper-kyphosis is generally slow, as it is caused when spinal ligaments stretch due to slouching from bad posture. Not all teens who slouch will develop kyphosis; in fact, most cases of hyper-kyphosis are reversible and do not cause permanent deformity.

Non-Surgical Treatment

Ultimately, kyphosis treatment depends on the cause and severity of curvature. Often strengthening exercises are enough to keep the body active and reduce progression. In some cases, back braces may be necessary to support the spine and prevent kyphosis from worsening.

Surgical Treatment

Surgery is generally recommended only for the worst forms of kyphosis, or in those where the curvature exceeds 75 degrees. Surgical procedures include anchoring hooks and/or screws into the vertebrae and attaching them to a rod which straightens the spine or even fusing vertebrae together to restrict a forward bend. In the most severe cases, a doctor may surgically release ligaments found along the front of the spine, which increases flexibility and range of spinal motion.

What Does A White Tongue Mean

According to doctors of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), your tongue can tell a lot about your health. Practitioners typically observe the shape, color, coating and any cracks or spots on the patient's tongue. You should not attempt to self-diagnose your health based on your tongue and should seek a professional's opinion. It should be noted that a normal tongue is a pinkish color and has a thin white coating that is uniform.

Thrush

Thrush, also known as Candida or yeast infection, is a common cause of a white tongue.

Qi/Blood Deficiency

A pale, white tongue can indicate that a person has a Qi or blood deficiency. In TCM, white is the color of metal and refers to the lungs and colon. This person is probably low on energy.

Leukoplakia

Leukoplakia can occur on the tongue as well as other areas of the mouth and are white patches that may appear "hairy." Leukoplakia may clear up on its own and, in rare cases, may lead to cancer. Leukoplakia is common in smokers.

Organ Health and Function

Each area of the tongue refers to a specific organ, and a white patch in an area may suggest dysfunction in that organ.

Stomach

White fur resembling cottage cheese refers to heat in the stomach.

Phlegm

A thick, white coating on the tongue signifies retention of phlegm and fluid within the body.

Change Antidepressants

It is estimated that nearly 30 million Americans will take some form of antidepressant during their lifetime. With such an abundance of antidepressant users and oftentimes only patients' reported symptoms to guide doctors' prescriptions, it is not uncommon for patients to switch antidepressants. Whether someone is experiencing undesirable side effects from his original medication or simply fails to respond to the antidepressant, there are a couple reliable methods to replace medications. With the help of a physician, making the switch from one antidepressant to another is fairly simple.

Instructions

Cross-tapering Medications

1. Visit your physician or mental health care provider to consult with her as to change antidepressants. She will be able to prescribe a new antidepressant based on your specific symptoms and medical history, and will also outline a plan for you to safely change medications.

2. Follow the instructions of your doctor to begin tapering the dose of your original antidepressant (usually a reduction of about 25% each day).

3. Continue tapering off the dosage of the original drug for the prescribed period of time, usually about one to two weeks.

4. Wait for three days after stopping intake of the first medication, then begin taking the prescribed dosage of the new antidepressant on the third day.

5. Continue to use the new medication in increased doses as prescribed by your physician, until you have reached an effective daily dosage. Take the new medication at the same time every day.

Immediately Switching Medications

6. Consult with your physician to ensure that you fully understand and follow the antidepressant substitution guidelines he prescribes.

7. Begin taking the newly prescribed medication in place of the old one when your doctor says you may do so. (For those taking fluoxetine, doctors generally advise waiting 3 to 4 days before starting a new antidepressant. Patients using other medications may be able to make the switch in just one day.)

8. Continue taking the prescribed dosage of the new medication at the same time each day.

Prevention Of Amyloidosis

Amyloidosis is a rare, and frequently misunderstood, disease. It's also a serious, potentially life-threatening one that can attack a number of organs, including the heart, liver, kidney and spleen. The disease occurs when amyloid proteins, abnormal proteins that are usually produced by cells in bone marrow, build up in organs. According to the Mayo Clinic, the causes of this disease are often unknown, and there is no cure. But there are both lifestyle changes and medical treatments that patients can rely on to prevent or limit the further production of amyloid protein.

The Basics

There are three types of amyloidosis. Primary, which can affect a patient's heart, liver, nerves, intestines, blood vessels and other areas, is the most common. Unfortunately, doctors do not know what causes this disease.

Secondary amyloidosis occurs in association with chronic infectious or inflammatory diseases, according to the Mayo Clinic. Patients suffering from tuberculosis or rheumatoid arthritis may develop this condition. This form of amyloidosis usually targets the liver, spleen, kidneys or lymph nodes.

Hereditary amyloidosis, the third form of the disease, is inherited, and often affects the heart, liver and kidneys.

Symptoms vary. The Mayo Clinic lists such warning signs as extreme fatigue, swollen ankles and legs, dramatic weight loss, diarrhea, irregular heartbeat and shortness of breath.

Because the disease targets so many organs, the complications from amyloidosis are many. For instance, if the disease targets the heart, patients may struggle to make it up a flight of stairs without needing a break. That's because amyloidosis reduces the amount of blood the heart takes in between pumps.

If the disease instead targets the kidneys, the result can ultimately be kidney failure. Amyloidosis may also cause patients to faint or suffer severe dizzy spells if they stand up too quickly.

Preventing Amyloid Production

Medical professionals don't have many tips to help people prevent amyloidosis. Doctors, though, usually recommend both medicinal and lifestyle treatments to slow or prevent many of the symptoms.

In some cases, the drug melphalan, a chemotherapy agent, has prevented or limited the future production of amyloid protein in patients. The drug dexamethasone, a corticosteroid, has also shown some results.

Peripheral blood stem cell transplantation is a riskier way to limit the further production of amyloid. Under this treatment, patients receive a high-dose transfusion of previously collected immature blood cells, according to the Mayo Clinic. These blood cells are used as replacements for diseased or damaged bone marrow. This procedure comes with serious risks, including the possibility of death.

Finally, doctors also recommend certain lifestyle changes to help prevent or control some of the symptoms of amyloidosis. Patients should not overexert themselves. And if they feel tired or short of breath, they should immediately take a rest. Patients should also eat healthy, balanced meals. Good nutrition will provide much-needed energy.

The Risk Factors

Doctors still don't know much about what causes amyloidosis. Unfortunately, the risk factors they do know about are ones that people can't do anything about.

For instance, a person's chances of suffering from this disease increase after age 40. People are also more likely to get amyloidosis if they suffer chronic infectious or inflammatory disease. Finally, patients who need to receive kidney dialysis are also at greater risk of acquiring the disease.

The Side Effects Of Niacin In The Treatment Of Elevated Cholesterol

Before the introduction of statins, doctors often prescribed niacin to their patients with elevated cholesterol counts. This practice is less common now, because like any other drug, niacin can trigger side effects, some of them serious.

Background

Niacin is vitamin B3, a water-soluble substance that helps regulate metabolism. According to Harvey Simon, M.D., niacin helps diminish overall cholesterol counts by lowering triglyceride levels, which statins do less effectively. Niacin also elevates the levels of HDL, sometimes called "good" cholesterol, in the blood.

Types

The website www.drugs.com describes two types of niacin products: fast and controlled release. Since niacin is a vitamin, it is available over the counter, though doctors also can order prescription-strength niacin from pharmacies.

Dosage

Dr. Simon notes that the recommended daily allowance for niacin is 18 mg, but the dosage needed to affect cholesterol counts is much higher than that. Doctors typically prescribe 500 mg per day to begin and may raise the dose to three times that if there's no discernible improvement.

Side Effects

At such high dosages, the prospect that the patient may suffer side effects becomes a possibility. Michael Richman, M.D., describes the most common side effects as flushing, peptic ulcer disease and gastritis, hyperglycemia, diabetes in patients who were borderline diabetic before taking the medication and liver toxicity.

In addition to these symptoms, Dr. Harvey reports instances of itching and headaches, gout, blurred vision, nausea, fatigue and erectile dysfunction.

Dr. Richman states that flushing is the most common side effect and "is also the most common reason patients stop using the medication." A patient prone to this side effect will begin flushing within 20 minutes of ingestion and may experience it for as long as an hour. This side effect is annoying and uncomfortable, but not potentially life-threatening.

Diabetes and liver toxicity are the most worrisome side effects. Dr. Richman says that diabetics can continue taking niacin under their doctor's care, but patients whose liver enzyme levels reach or exceed three times the norm should stop taking it.

Effectiveness

The jury is still out on whether massive doses of niacin are a better course of treatment than statins. Research into the subject does not conclusively prove that niacin lowers cholesterol levels effectively enough to make it the preferred medication for these conditions. Both Dr. Harvey and Dr. Richman prefer statins to niacin, though Dr. Harvey says that "I primarily use it in patients with high triglycerides with known coronary artery disease---in addition to a statin."

What Are The Treatments For Laser Hair Removal Burns

Laser hair removal burns are all too common occurrences. Instead of smooth and hair-free skin, sufferers find themselves with blisters and raw patches. Your technician should offer advice to help treat the burns, and offer to cover the cost. Visit a dermatologist to look at your burns to avoid infection, and other complications. Best treatments include using a gentle moisturizer, and protecting your skin from the elements.

History

Laser hair removal burns are painful, and can be a traumatic experience. According to Doc Shop, burns occur when the skin, instead of the hair follicle, absorbs the laser energy. Inexperienced or unqualified technicians are often the cause of burns.

Warning

Badly burned skinned, or skin that has not begun healing after a few days, should be treated by a dermatologist. Laser hair removal burns could become infected, or lead to scarring without proper treatment.

Cooling

Apply a cold compress to the burned area, but avoid placing ice directly onto the burn. Take a break if your skin starts to feel numb, and only treat a few times a day. Run a wash cloth under a cold tap, and gently sponge on your skin to help cool it down.

Moisturizer Types

Use a gentle moisturizer like Cetaphyl, or ask for a recommendation from your doctor. Avoid potentially drying antibacterial creams, unless you are instructed to use one by your practitioner. Some people prefer coco butter and aloe vera ointment to help sooth and moisturize their skin at the same time.

Considerations

Treat your burned skin with a gentle cleanser, and avoid shaving until the skin heals. You may start to notice hair shedding around the laser treated areas after several days. Refrain from plucking or pulling at the hairs, and allow them to slough off naturally. Use a tissue to wipe away stray hairs.

Prevention/Solution

Refrain from spending time in direct sunlight, and keep your skin covered with long-sleeves or a hat to protect your face. Darker skin is more susceptible to laser hair removal burns. African-American women are usually not very good candidates for laser hair removal. Use sunscreen and stay out of the sun before your first treatment. If you're fair skinned, you may notice a darkening of pigment around the treated area.

Licensing

Find out if your state requires licensing for hair removal technicians. Many states have no requirements or evaluation procedure. As a result, untrained personnel are often allowed to perform such services. Collect trusted recommendations from friends, and scour the Internet for reviews to find a skilled technician. Be wary of cheap prices and unrealistic promises.

Principles Of Magnetic Therapy

Principles of Magnetic Therapy

Magnetic therapy is an alternative treatment approach that use magnets as a source of directed energy. It is based on the physics of electromagentism, and applies these principles to the magnetic fields present in the human body. This form of treatment, though practiced in many fields, is not considered a standardized medical treatment.

Identification

The principles of magnetic therapy are rooted in biomagnetics. Biomagnetics is a branch of bioscience that specializes in the study of the magnetic fields contained inside the human body. This field examines how the body's magnetic fields interact with the biological systems that make up the body. The laws of physics as they pertain to magnetism are incorporated as a way to understand the fields contained inside the body. Magnetic fields have been found to have an effect on biological processes like ion movement, electrical signaling, lipid metabolism and hormonal activity.

Physical Characteristics

Magnetic fields have certain physical characteristics that determine how energy is directed. The strength of magnetic fields is determined by their intensity, or how their wavelengths are structured. Magnetic fields form into a space configuration that works to surround the source of the field, be it a magnet, or a conducting wire. The wavelength inside a field can travel at a static, or fixed rate as is the case with a permanent magnet; or it can travel at a varied rate as is the case with A/C, or alternating currents. The electrical currents used in magnetic therapy make use of variable wavelengths in order to accommodate the changing magnetic fields within the body.

Electromagnetic Interactions

The principles behind magnetic therapy utilize electromagnetic interactions to affect the magnetic fields within certain areas of the body. The chemical makeup of cellular processes rely on a certain electrolyte balance to properly function. The body uses electrolytes to assist with the electrical signaling mechanisms that take place between cells. Electromagnetic stimulation is used to stimulate ion activity inside living tissue. Free radical materials present in cellular tissue may also be altered by a change in the magnetic field, causing chemical processes to impair the effects of these materials.

Effects

The effects of magnetic therapy treatments are believed to correct malfunctions within the chemical and physiological processes in the body. By balancing magnetic fields within bodily systems, processes realign to their natural, normal functions. The effects include improved blood circulation which works to provide needed oxygen and nutrient materials throughout the body. Electromagnetic effects can increase cellular processes that stimulate the production of ATP, or cellular energy. This in turn fuels the entire system with added energy. Hormone production processes may also undergo a balancing effect as electromagnetic energy works to alter electrical signaling processes within the brain.

Treatment Uses

Magnetic therapy has found a number of uses in the treatment of bodily ailments. Pain management treatments make use of magnetic fields as a way to redirect the electrical signals that reach sensory nerve endings. Conditions in which the immune system is compromised are also influenced by the effects electromagnetic energies have on cellular defense systems, and the chemical reactions that take enhance these processes. As magnetic fields can have a direct influence on electrical signaling pathways, therapy techniques can improve electrical processes within the brain. Improved brain function can work to restore sleep patterns, regulate stress response and improve conditions involving central nervous system disorders.

Detox Tea Benefits

Detox teas are concoctions that individuals can use to get rid of toxins in their body. Detox teas use a mixture of different herbs in order to initiate the detoxification process. You can purchase a detox tea or prepare a recipe to make at home.

Brands

Popular brands of detoxification teas include Yogi Tea Detox, Celestial Seasonings Detox A.M. Tea and the All Natural Super Detox Tea. Ingredients commonly found in detox teas are milk thistle seed, dandelion, Echinacea, red clover, sarsaparilla, juniper berry and licorice root. To prepare the teas, you boil water and add the teabag to brew for five minutes. Most manufacturers recommend using the detox tea one to three times a day.

Claims

Detox tea makers claim that the body is full of chemical impurities and toxins that can lead to a variety of health problems. These toxins can cause stress related disorders as well as fatigue. When you drink a detoxification tea, it is supposed to cleanse the body of these impurities. The individual will feel more energetic and less stressed. Since the body will be cleansed with these excess impurities, a person likely will feel less bloated.

Toxins

Toxins that can be removed from the body by drinking detox teas include caffeine, alcohol, smoke and food additives. The tea removes these toxins from the liver and kidney to promote healthy function. You can consume detox tea daily for a 30-day period to get rid of these toxins.

Considerations

If you are looking for a tea to rid the body of impurities, make sure that the mixture is caffeine-free. Don't consume caffeinated detox teas since caffeine is one of the chemical impurities removed from the body.

Warning

Keep in mind that the benefits of detox tea producers have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration for validity. Also, if you have any side effects from detox tea stop consuming the product immediately and notify your doctor. Potential side effects are nausea, vomiting, headache, diarrhea and dizziness. Detox teas are not advised for pregnant and nursing women.

Use Cytotec For Inducing Labor

Cytotec is the trade name for Misoprostol, an FDA-approved drug that is used in the United States for preventing gastric ulcers that may be caused by anti-inflammatory medications. In other countries, however, it is also an approved drug for inducing labor.

At the start of your pregnancy, your doctor may provide you with a generalized estimate of the week when you will give birth---which is usually 40 weeks after the first day of your last period. From 37 to 43 weeks, it's considered safe to give birth as the baby will come out full-term. But there are women who, for some reason, still fail to have the baby after 40 weeks. Some doctors and midwives advise induced labor to their patients and this is where Cytotec comes into play.

Instructions

1. Ask your doctor about using Cytotec to induce labor. Cytotec has not yet been medically tested for its safety for inducing labor although it is commonly used for this purpose. Understand that the FDA has not approved the drug for this purpose so you might want to seek the advice of your doctor before going ahead with this route.

2. Find out more about your alternatives. Your doctor may suggest other ways of inducing labor. It is important that you understand the risks and benefits and ensure that the benefits of inducing labor with the drug outweigh the risks. Using any type of drug to induce labor is risky. Consider other means of labor inducement such as acupressure, getting a massage or eating spicy foods.

3. Follow the exact dosage. In the event that the doctor does decide to prescribe Cytotec, this is

probably right before a scheduled labor so you need to make sure that you take the exact recommended dosage.

4. Ensure that you are sufficiently supervised by a doctor when taking the drug. Taking Cytotec to induce labor merits the constant supervision of your doctor. This is because an overdose can case a variety of adverse effects including severe fetal distress, uterine rupture and even fetal and maternal death. Make sure that doctors and health care providers are on hand should you experience severe discomfort from taking the drug.

What Are Hematite Beads

What Are Hematite Beads?

Hematite beads are formed from hematite or "bloodstone." Most people wear hematite beads for decoration, and many claim the beads help relieve aches and pains. Hematite beads are heavy, smooth and cool to the touch.

Features

Hematite beads have a variant color of silver, black and gray, with a metallic to dull luster. Hematite beads are used for bracelets, necklaces and earrings.

Geography

Hematite beads are formed from the minerals of iron oxide and may contain small amounts of titanium. Most hematite is mined in South America, Europe and North America for its quality.

Function

Hematite beads may be purchased to create jewelry. Hematite beads are popular for their aesthetic and believed healing properties.

Benefits

Hematite beads are paramagnetic, and it is believed that hematite's magnetic properties reduce pain. Hematite beads are worn with the premise that positively charged ions in the blood are accelerated. As the charged ions pass through a magnetic field, the friction creates heat and increases blood flow.

Warning

Paramagnetic or magnetic jewelry should not be worn by those who have pacemakers, defibrillator pumps or insulin pumps. It is also not advised for women who are pregnant, without first seeking the advise of a physician.

Use Of Tulsi In Cosmetics

Use tulsi for beautiful skin.

Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), commonly known as Holy Basil, is an herb indigenous to South Asia. Tulsi's healing attributes have been documented for centuries, and it remains the core of Ayurveda (India's herbal medicine). Tulsi has long been one of the most common medicinal plants used in India, though the West is just waking up to its powers. Cosmetic companies have recognized its bactericidal attributes and now use it in a wide array of beauty products.

Skin

Steven Maimes talks about the uses and benefits of Holy Basil in an article about his ongoing research for Salam Research, an independent company in Rochester, N.H. Published in November 2004, Maimes says Tulsi "reduces eczema and psoriasis ... and helps skin diseases like leprosy and staph infection." With its antibacterial properties, Tulsi flushes out dangerous toxins and regenerates skin.

Anti-Aging

Tulsi contains ursolic acid, a compound that prevents wrinkles and helps retain the elasticity prevalent in young faces. No wonder Tulsi became an instant hit with the beauty industry and a prime ingredient in herbal cosmetics, including face packs, creams and many other products.

For fresh and youthful skin, mix Tulsi powder (available online) with water and apply to your face. Once dried, rinse your face thoroughly with water.

Beauty and Restoration

Tulsi enhances beauty; many Indian women make it a part of their daily beauty ritual.

Applying Tulsi powder removes spots from your face. For natural freshness, boil water with Tulsi leaves and lemon juice. Cover your head with towel and refresh your face with the emanating steam.

Tulsi cleanses and purifies the blood. Hecapedia recommends using Tulsi paste to treat acne. A homemade cure of Tulsi paste helps people with leucoderma.

Other Uses

Referred to as an "elixir of life," Tulsi has a long and varied history. Drinking tea or a decoction imbued with stress-resilient Tulsi calms the mind and body. Extensively used in Ayurveda, Tulsi juice heals respiratory illnesses such as bronchitis, excessive cough and fever. Tulsi can help lower cholesterol and protect heart and blood vessels. Gargle with Tulsi and warm water to relieve a sore throat. In Ayurveda, a paste of tulsi and black pepper treats ringworm.

Considerations

Organic India, a company working to promote and develop holistic healing and beauty products through agriculture, notes Tulsi's beneficial compounds, which work together to "promote general health."

It further mentions that using Tulsi every day is completely safe. If you're concerned, however, consult your doctor, particularlty if you are pregnant or a lactating mother.

Reduce Eyestrain

Some health experts estimate that 70 to 100 million Americans use computers. Of that number, about 30 percent complain of eyestrain, blurred vision or other eye-related discomfort. Progressive opthamalogists acknowledge that while corrective lenses are important, taking regular breaks, doing specific eye exercises, setting up an ergonomic work station and nutrition all can reduce eyestrain. If you have glaucoma, cataracts or macular degeneration, consult your opthamalogist first. At the turn of the century, William H. Bates, M.D. (1865 – 1930), an opthamologist, published The Bates Method For Better Eyesight Without Glasses. The palming technique he described has been used before and since his book was published. Earlier, Aldous Huxley, in the Art of Seeing, describes how he went from being legally blind to improving his eyesight from eye exercises. Here are some practical ways to reduce eyestrain, especially in an office environment.

Instructions

1. Maintain regular annual physical and eye exams as a preventative measure. If you have glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, yearly exams are important. If you are so myopic that you risk retinal detachment from severe eyestrain, ask your ophthalmologist what symptoms to look out for. One common one is to notice if it appears a black curtain is falling and your vision suddenly is cut off by it. If you contact your opthamologist or go to an emergency room quickly, the optic nerve can normally be reattached.

2. Establish an ergonomic workstation. Make sure your computer has a LCD (liquid crystal display) screen rather than the older CRT (cathode ray tube) that can create more glare and contribute to more eyestrain. Ideally, your feet are flat on the floor and your computer screen is about 15 to 20 degrees lower than your line of sight. Your screen should be about 20 inches away from your eyes.

3. Change your computer screen settings to reduce eyestrain. Set the refresh rate to at least 75 Hertz and the resolution to 0.28 mm or smaller. Try to work on a computer with a screen with a diagonal length of at least 19 inches. Light your workshop properly. Eyestrain can occur if you work in a dim space. Light the room so that it is about three times brighter than your screen is. Avoid shining a desk lamp directly on the screen as it will create too much glare.

4. Move your eyes. Blink more frequently as you work in front of your computer. Practice the game of “look near, look far” several times a day. Look away from the screen to a bookshelf or the far wall in your office, or better yet, stand to stretch as you gaze out through a window to the farthest point you can make out. Working your extrinsic eye muscles by moving your eyes near and far as breaks throughout the day will not keep them fixed.

5. Practice “color day” by selecting one bright color a day and taking special note of it as you see it throughout the day. For a home project, create a Brock string by stringing several small-to-larger-sized beads in bright colors along the length of a 10- to 12-foot length of string. Tether the rope inside your home or office where you can easily see it from sitting on your sofa or in your chair at work. Glance up at the Brock string several times a day, allowing your eyes to move from one brightly-colored string to the next. Do not strain the eyes.

6. Use palming to relax the eyes. Sitting comfortably in a chair, rub the palms together to create heat in your hands. Lightly cup your eyes with your palms, not touching the eyelids or eyes at all. Remain for several minutes. Rest for a few minutes more, eyes closed. Palming is discussed in both Dr. Bates’ and Huxley’s books.

7. Practice good nutrition by consulting a nutritionist or dietician for specific guidelines. She may advise taking vitamins A, C, E, selenium, and zinc as these are all antioxidants that protect all cells. Lutein, found in tomatoes, have been studied for their eye protective support. There are commercial vitamins designed for eye health. Consult a medical professional for advice.

Relieve Headaches Naturally

Presented treatments can help you stop headache pain before it starts. Almost everyone gets a headache at some point during their lifetime. Three main types of headache are tension headaches, migraines and cluster headaches. Understanding and treating headaches naturally can lead to better health habits.

Instructions

Relieve Headaches Naturally

1. Suffering a tension headache is more trouble than the problem that caused it in the first place. Tension headache symptoms start with a steady vise-like pain on both sides of the head and/or the neck. Many times the tension headache is caused by tightening the muscles which can lead to pain. If you contract muscles long enough and hard enough, it will cause pain.Tension headaches affects both men and women. Stress is the main trigger for tension headache. Natural remedies for the headache include biofeedback, relaxation techniques, such as yoga, meditation and massages. Other natural remedies identified are aerobic exercise, cognitive behavior therapy and acupuncture.

2. Experiencing a migraine on the other hand is a different pain. The pain is usually throbbing and localized to one side of the head. Other symptoms include nausea with or without vomiting and sensitivity to light and sounds. Some people experience auras. Auras can include brightly colored or blinking lights that move across the field of vision.Understanding the migraine headache is not easy. Migraine headaches primarily affects women and it is usually caused by stress and certain foods. Natural remedies for the migraine headache is biofeedback, relaxation, sleep and melatonin supplements. Avoidance of trigger foods, acupuncture, nutritional supplements and herbs have also been helpful in relieving headaches naturally.

3. Painful cluster headaches are rare, severe and primarily afflicts men. Pain tends to localize around one eye, which becomes red and watery. Normally, cluster headaches last less than one hour, but are reoccurring.Smoking and drinking alcohol can trigger a cluster headache usually in men. Natural remedies for the cluster headache are melatonin and nutritional supplements.

4. Participating in therapies can reduce headache pain and prevented it, whichever the headache type a person has. These natural therapies include eating a well balanced diet, getting enough sleep, engaging in regular and relaxing physical activity and not letting stress take over the mind and muscle. Vitamins, minerals and herbs represent a second tier of self treatment, while biofeedback and acupuncture provides further nonpharmacologic ways to relieve headaches naturally.

What To Expect After Bypass & Valve Replacement On Your Heart

Patients can expect recovery time of six to eight weeks after heart surgery.

After having a heart bypass and valve replacement surgery, patients will receive a list of instructions on care for the incision, physical limitations, pain management and medication. It is imperative that patients follow their physicians' instructions in order to have a safe and infection-free recovery.

After Surgery

After surgery, the patient is moved into intensive care. Once the physician feels the patient is stable and breathing on their own, they are taken out of intensive care and moved to a different part of the hospital. Patients are closely monitored and assessed through a series of tests. They are allowed to go home once they are physically able to move about on their own and their vitals are consistently stable.

Physical Activity

For the first six to eight weeks after going home, patients should not lift anything heavier than 10 pounds to avoid tearing the internal stitches. Light movement is encouraged, but climbing steps, raising your arms above your head or exercise is discouraged to avoid undue strain on the healing heart.

Incision Care

The incision site is located in the middle of the chest. It is important to always keep the incision clean and dry to avoid opening or infecting it. Use only soap and water to clean, and do not scrub the incision site because the stitches will pull out. Unless prescribed by the primary care physician, do not use salves or lotions on the incision.

Bathing

Showers should take no longer than 10 minutes, and the shower spray should not touch the incision site because the stitches may come out. Stay away from extreme water temperatures to avoid heart fluctuations, which can cause faintness.

Pain

Patients should expect some incision discomfort, especially during movement. As it heals, the incision will itch. The physician will give the patient some mild pain relievers, but contact the physician if the patient experiences any chest pain or pressure.

Medications

Do not take any medications unless the physician has approved them. Some patients will no longer need the medicines they were taking prior to the surgery, but be sure to ask the doctor before stopping them. Do not take any over-the-counter medications or nutritional supplements without a doctor's permission. Some supplements and over-the-counter drugs can interact with prescribed medications adversely.

Reduce Stretch Marks During Pregnancy

Many women experience stretch marks during their pregnancy. These will fade over time and turn into slightly translucent lines. Follow these steps to minimize them.

Instructions

1. Try using recommended lotions and creams. There are some over-the-counter stretch mark creams that help in reducing the appearance of stretch marks.

2. Make sure you eat healthy and maintain your weight. Women who tend to gain too much weight get long stretch marks on their bellies, thighs, and buttocks.

3. Get out and exercise! When you are pregnant it is a smart idea to go walking, try swimming or engage in other light exercise. These activities will help you maintain your weight and avoid massive stretch marks.

4. Use sunscreen during the day and age spot cream at night time to avoid additional skin damage.

5. Massage natural oils such as jojoba, vitamin E and wheat germ into scars that have already occurred. It can increase circulation of the blood, help heal the epidermis and reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

6. Drink many fluids and eat a variety of foods that are rich in vitamin E, vitamin C, silica and zinc.

7. Take vitamin supplements for a healthy immune system. Vitamin supplements are also beneficial for the skin and its elasticity.

Activities Of Daily Living Scale For Stroke Patients

The activities of daily living (ADL) scale for stroke patients is used to determine the degree of supervision the patient will require when returning home from the hospital. Several different tasks that the patient would routinely perform at home are rated based upon the degree of assistance the patient requires. The total score is then used to determine the degree of dependency the patient has. Home care assistance can then be determined accordingly.

Feeding

Determine how well the patient can feed himself with a rating from zero to ten. If the patient has a feeding tube or if you have to feed him, give a score of zero. If the patient can feed himself and manipulate his food well enough to butter bread and cut food, then give him a score of ten. Varying degrees of ability receive a score between zero and ten.

Hygiene

Test your stroke patient's ability to clean himself, get dressed and use the bathroom. Toilet transfers are rated from zero to ten, depending upon the patient's ability to get on and off the toilet or use the urinal. He will also be rated on the ability to manipulate his clothing and use toilet paper. In addition, the patient receives another score for bladder control on a scale of zero to ten, with a zero given if your patient has a catheter or requires diapers and a ten awarded if the patient can control his bladder both day and night. Likewise, the patient is rated on other activities of daily living, like his ability to wash himself, clean his teeth, shave and comb his hair. You will also score the patient on his ability to dress himself and apply all assistive devices he may need to wear.

Mobility

Test your patient on his ability to get around his home and transfer into his bed or wheelchair. If your patient can walk by himself and get in and out of his bed safely he should receive a score of 15. If your patient is in a wheelchair but can propel himself around and uses proper safety precautions with locking his chair he receives a score of 15 also. If the patient is unable to stand and transfer to his bed without your help, his score is zero.

Interpretation

Add up the scores from all of these tasks. Your stroke patient could score from 0 to 115 points total. Use the patient's final score to predict whether he will be able to return home. If you give the patient a score of less than 40, it is unlikely he will be able to go home, because he is very dependent on others for assistance. A score of 40 to 60 is a gray area that depends upon the individual patient. If the patient achieved this score because his condition is improving, he might be a candidate to go home with assistance. A score of 60 to 80 indicates your patient will need some degree of assistance or community services to manage at home. If your patient scores above 85, there is a very good chance he will be able to function independently in a community living arrangement. A score over 100 indicates your stroke patient is ready to go home and live without personal assistance in performing his activities of daily life.

Choose Shoes For Haglund'S Deformity

Haglund's deformity is a bony enlargement on the back of the heel that is also called "bump pump". It is often associated with a bursa (a fluid filled sac between a tendon and bone) which can become inflamed (bursitis). The Achilles tendon can also become inflamed when the bony enlargement rubs against shoes. It is most commonly seen in women who wear high heeled, slip-on shoes. The symptoms may include a visible bump on the back of the heel, pain, swelling and redness at the back of the heel.

Instructions

1. Take a look at the shoes that you currently own and see which ones are comfortable. This will give you an idea of the type of shoe that may be best for you.

2. Look for shoes with a padded collar at the heel of the shoe. This will prevent the top edge of the heel from irritating your heel.

3. Find a shoe with a lace or a strap. A lace or a strap also holds your foot in place so that it does not slip up and down in the shoe and irritate the back of your heel.

4. Avoid shoes with prominent stitching, straps or seams that run across the prominent heel area. This will only add pressure to a susceptible area and can cause corns, calluses or blisters.

5. Consider wearing backless shoes if you are unable to find shoes that do not irritate your foot. You should only keep these for occasions when you will not be on your feet too much as they provide limited support.

6. Visit a specialist shoe store. The specialist or sales staff may be able to adjust your shoe to prevent the heel being irritated. For example, a small in-shoe heel lift may be enough prevent the back of the shoe rubbing on you heel.

7. Take your new shoes to your podiatrist if you are unsure about the fit. They may be able to adjust them slightly by placing padding in the shoe or arrange for the shoes to be adjusted by a specialist. They may refer you to a shoemaker to have a pair of shoes made specifically to your measurements.

Why Do Your Ears Ring After A Concert

So you went to a loud rock concert, had a great time, only to come home after the concert to an obnoxious, persistent and grating ringing in your ears. Eventually the ringing went away (hopefully) and the next time you wore earplugs. But that doesn't answer the question of why exactly do your ears ring after concerts. Read on to learn more about this phenomenon.

Identification

Ringing in the ears is medically referred to as "tinnitus." Many people describe the ringing sounds in different ways. Some descriptions include clicking, ticking, tree frogs, buzzing, whining, locusts, beeping and humming. Some people also say it sounds like a "whoosh" sound. All of these sounds are vastly different, but can all fall under the category of tinnitus. If you hear any of these types of sounds ringing in your ears and it's causing you distress, it's very likely you have tinnitus.

Expert Insight

When your ears ring after a loud concert, that means damage has been done. The sound waves from the offending noise enter into your ears and overexcite the cochleas. The nerves that are connected to the cochlea and are responsible for carrying sound information to the brain. The dead nerves and damaged cochlea thus create an excitation from inside of the brain, which in turn makes the wayward nerve connections in the brain produce a ringing sound.

Considerations

Try this test to determine whether you should be wearing earplugs at a concert. If you are about 2 feet away from a person and you cannot communicate with them without having to shout or raise your voice, then the setting is definitely too loud and you need to be protecting your ears. However, to be on the safe side, it's a good idea to wear earplugs at any concert, whether it's rock music or not.

Potential

There are also a few ways to decrease the intensity and severity of tinnitus. These include limiting and lessening your salt intake, decreasing anxiety, controlling your blood pressure, exercising regularly, taking your mind off the tinnitus and avoiding loud sounds and noises in general.

Prevention/Solution

There are a couple of ways to avoid the ringing from occurring in the first place. The first way is to wear earplugs. Earplugs are cheap and can be purchased at any drugstore or music supply store. They are also very easy to insert in the ears and do not hurt at all. Another way to try to avoid the ringing is by standing away from the stage and not getting too close to the speakers.
