Recipes For Essential Oil Blends For Arthritis

Arthritis affects many people with debilitating pain from conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout. If the arthritis condition is localized in one part of the body, essential oil massage, compresses and localized hand and foot baths can be used for treatment. If the arthritis involves several joints or larger areas of the body, opt for an aromatic bath to relieve symptoms.

Massage

Massage is an effective and relaxing treatment when it comes to treating arthritis. Combine several essential oils together to create a synergistic blend for safe pain relief. Many of the essential oils used in arthritis rubs have anti-inflammatory properties as well as acting as analgesics.

For a localized application of massage oil, try mixing together about 14 drops of lavender essential oil with 10 drops of rosemary essential oil and 8 drops of peppermint essential oil. Mix these in with some type of carrier or base oil such as sweet almond oil or even regular vegetable oil. Use about 2 tablespoons of carrier oil. Add these oils to a sealable dark glass bottle and shake well to mix together. You can massage about one teaspoon of this oil into the affected area two to three times a day for relief.

Compresses

Additional relief for localized arthritis pain can be achieved through the use of a cold compress. The cool temperature of the compress helps to relieve inflammation and has analgesic properties when used with specific essential oils. The essential oils on the compress penetrate the skin to provide pain relief.

To relieve the pain and swelling of arthritis, you can put one cup of cool water in a bowl. Add 3 drops each of chamomile and hyssop essential oils. Two drops of cypress essential oil can also be added. Stir the essential oils into the water. Use a piece of flannel or a washcloth and saturate completely with the cool water. Wring out and place over the affected area until the cloth is no longer cool. Replace with a fresh cloth. Try to leave the compress on for at least 15 to 20 minutes for full benefit. Elevate the affected joint to encourage circulatory drainage. You can do this process 2 to 3 times a day for relief.

Aromatic Baths

Aromatic baths can be used to treat a small area of the body such as the hands or feet, or for your entire body, depending on your condition. Warm water temperature in the bath encourages relaxation of the muscles and will increase circulation. Add Epsom salts to any bath to aid the body in detoxification and relief of muscular tension. For an aromatic essential oil bath, you can combine about 4 drops of juniper essential oil and 2 drops each of lavender, cypress and rosemary essential oils. Mix well into a warm bath and soak for at least 20 to 30 minutes.

In addition to using essential oils for arthritis pain, try some gentle, non-weight-bearing exercise, such as swimming or yoga. This will help to keep joints flexible.

Consult your physician if you continue to experience arthritis pain; you may need more conventional treatment.
