Free Chinese Home Remedies

Herbs and teas are part of Chinese at-home remedies.

Traditional Chinese medicine is based on the belief that imbalances in your qi (chi) upset the natural flow of energy and can result in disease or discomfort. By rebalancing the energy through herbal remedies, acupuncture and acupressure, healing foods, and qigong exercises, you will remain vital and healthy. Although it is a good idea to have a consultation with a traditional Chinese medicine doctor first to get an assessment, not all Chinese remedies require that you visit a TCM practitioner. Try certain remedies at home for specific ailments.

Nausea Relief

Ginger is a powerful root used in Chinese medicine to help with nausea and upset stomach. You can chew a piece of fresh or candied ginger or prepare a ginger drink. To prepare a simple drink found at Health Status.com, you need fresh ginger, brown sugar and water. Place two to three slices of ginger in a cup. Pour boiling water over the ginger. You can add brown sugar to sweeten the drink if you would like. Pregnant women may experience relief from morning sickness with ginger.

Cold Remedy

In Chinese medicine, the use of hot and cold foods can heal. For a cold that has no associated fever, eat and drink warm or hot foods especially with strong flavors. At the Vitamins to Health website, it is suggested to cook noodles and add ginger and fresh onion. Eat this meal and then rest afterward.

Improve Beauty

Using Chinese dates, sweet rice and longan fruit, make a treat to nourish your health and beauty from the inside out. This recipe is from the book "Ancient Healing for Modern Women" by Dr. Xiaolan Zhao, C.M.D. It requires 6 cups water, 1 cup black sweet rice (washed),1/2 cup longan fruit, 10 Chinese dates, 2 tablespoons raw sugar and 1/2-inch fresh ginger peeled and sliced thinly. In a large heavy saucepan, combine water, rice, longan fruit, dates and raw sugar. Bring ingredients to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat and simmer two hours, stirring occasionally. Garnish with ginger.

Extend Lifespan

Walking backward is a simple technique for improving longevity and health. Many Chinese and Japanese people do this exercise regularly. Walking backward emphasizes different muscle groups and promotes increased stamina. If you choose to walk backward, start out by taking 10 steps backward on a straight and smooth surface. Once you feel comfortable, begin slowly walking backward on an even surface like a paved path or track.

Lessen Menstrual Cramps

Use acupressure points to relieve the pain from menstrual cramps. There are several recommended acupoints to hold. One suggested at Alternative MD.com is called San Yin Jiao (Spleen 6). To find it, put your fingers on your ankle. Move up about three inches on the calf. Now place one or two fingers on this area. Apply enough pressure to feel a sensation, but not so much that your fingers feel uncomfortable. Hold for several minutes and then release the hold.

Constipation Relief

Drinking a honey tea is a Chinese method for eliminating constipation, according to Matthew Scott's irritable bowel syndrome website. Also, avoid certain foods like dairy products or spicy foods to ensure proper bowel functioning. Coffee and caffeine may also contribute to bowel issues.
