Why Do We Get Bad Breath In The Morning

What is it?

Morning breath is caused by microorganisms called biofilm that breed bacteria while you're sleeping. The bacteria grow on the tongue, gums and teeth and produce unpleasant odors if the area is not cleaned daily. The bacteria break down proteins and create volatile sulphur compounds, thus causing morning breath.

Lack of Saliva

A dry throat and mouth are susceptible to bacteria. While sleeping, your mouth doesn't move as much as while you're awake and therefore doesn't produce as much saliva. The combination of lack of oxygen and little saliva production causes anaerobic bacteria to replicate and cause the foul odor.

Food Residue

Snacking before bed and not brushing your teeth leads to morning breath. The food particles rest on your gums, teeth and tongue at night, and cause bacteria to easily replicate. The anaerobic bacteria feed on the food particles and create waste products. The waste products are sulfur-based, and create morning breath.
