What Causes High Cholesterol & High Triglycerides

High cholesterol and triglycerides usually go hand in hand. The actual name for this disorder, in medical terms, is lipid disorder. Lipids are fats that freely flow through the bloodstream; they are made up of triglycerides and cholesterol.

Significance

Elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels can be detrimental to the body; if left untreated, they can lead to heart disease and even atherosclerosis.

Genetics

Susceptibility to high cholesterol and triglycerides can be inherited from your parents.

Trans Fats in Processed Foods

Trans-fatty acids are found in processed foods that use hydrogenated oils, such as potato chips and cookies. Eating high amounts of this fat can raise cholesterol and triglycerides.

Lifestyle Changes

Excessive use of alcohol can raise your cholesterol levels; being sedentary and overweight can also contribute. Exercise can significantly reduce cholesterol levels over time.

Disease

There are certain diseases that can elevate cholesterol and triglyceride levels, including diabetes, kidney disease and hyperthyroidism.
