Hana, Maui History
Hana is one of the most isolated towns in Maui. Tourists know it from making the "Heavenly Drive to Hana," a 68-mile stretch of road that has over 59 bridges and 600 turns.
First Capital of Maui
Hana was Maui's first capital city. In the 14th century, Hana's Chief Piilani used Hana's remote location as a base of operations to conquer the rest of the island.
Ka'ahumanu
The Hana area was the home of Ka'ahumanu, the favorite wife of Kamehameha I, the ruler of the Big Island of Hawaii. With her encouragement, Kamehameha I united the islands of Hawaii under one rule. Ka'ahumanu continued to share power as prime minister for her son Kamehameha II, and eventually became Queen Regent of the Hawaiian Islands.
Sugarcane
Hana's first sugarcane plantation and mill were constructed in 1849 by whaler George Wilfong. When Wilfong couldn't find native Hawaiians to work it, he brought in Chinese laborers.
Road to Hana
In 1926 the road to Hana was completed, making it possible for one to drive overland from Hana to Kahului.
Romantic Getaway
In 1946, Paul Fagan established the Ka-'uiki Inn (now the Hotel Hana-Maui), thus establishing Hana's reputation as a romantic destination that is both quiet and hospitable.
