We all want our hair to look shiny and healthy. Indian people in particular seem to have beautiful hair. Ancient Indian holy men developed what's known as Ayurvedic medicine some 5,000 years ago. The philosophy behind Ayurvedic medicine is to prevent problems rather than wait and try to cure them.
Thinning Hair
If your hair is thinning or slow to grow, you can boil sage leaves in coconut oil and then, removing the leaves, apply the now blackened oil to your hair and scalp. Leave in your hair for at least 30 minutes before shampooing. Another remedy for hair loss is to pound fenugreek seeds into a powder and then mix with coconut milk and a pinch of black pepper. Apply the mixture to your scalp three times per week about an hour before you wash your hair.
Shampooing and Treating Head Lice
For Indian hair care, shampooing is actually secondary to conditioning. Mild shampoos containing the same herbal ingredients as the conditioners are recommended. One of the most popular shampoos contains amla, which comes from Indian gooseberry. Amla is a powerful antioxidant used to retard aging; it can also be taken in supplement form. Remember that anything that is good for your skin is also good for your hair.
For head lice, try massaging neem oil into the hair and scalp before going to bed. In the morning, rinse your hair with neem tea. Neem is a type of evergreen tree and is a natural pesticide and antifungal herb.
Moisturize and Brush
If you want to moisturize your hair and scalp you can try the centuries-old remedy also used by Native Americans: Apply pure jojoba oil to your hair and massage it into your scalp as well. Leave this on for at least 15 minutes before rinsing out. After shampooing you can also rinse your hair in juniper tea for shine and to prevent gray hair, in the practice of Hopi Indians. One of the most prescribed methods to keep hair soft and shiny is to brush hair vigorously with a stiff brush. Then use a soft brush to smooth and stimulate growth.
