Sinus headache pressure is caused by inflammation and congestion of the nasal passages. Pressure builds up around the head and eyes from mucus that is trapped within the inflamed passages. The head and face become tender to the touch and pain often worsens with sudden movement of the head. There are treatments that you can do to help relieve sinus headache pressure.
Antibiotics
Sinus headaches often occur from a condition called sinusitis. Sinusitis is caused by a bacterial infection that causes inflammation of the nasal passages as well as green-yellowish mucus. When the nasal passages become inflamed, pressure can build up causing a sinus headache. The only way to treat the infection is by taking antibiotics. Consult your physician so he can check for a sinus infection. Once you begin taking an antibiotic, the infection should start to clear up and inflammation of the sinuses should also shrink, taking the pressure off the head and eyes. Normally, an antibiotic is taken for 10 to 14 days.
Prescription Nasal Sprays
Prescription nasal sprays such as Nasonex and Flonase are often prescribed for treating sinus inflammation due to allergies. Allergents are particles such as dust and pollen that affect people when they breath them in. Dust and pollen become trapped inside the nasal passages causing them to swell. The inflammation traps mucus in the sinus passages, putting pressure on the head, eyes, and nose. Your physician can prescribe nasal sprays to help with allergies and inflammation. Spray one to two sprays into your nostrils every four to six hours. The prescription nasal spray will shrink and open the nasal passages allowing mucus to flow through. This will alleviate the pressure.
Cold Compresses
A cold compress is a great way to help ease sinus headache and pressure. Pharmacies carry gel filled facial masks. The mask should cover the eyes, part of the forehead, and cheek area. When frozen, the mask helps to relieve sinus pressure. Keep it on the face for at least 10 minutes, and wear it 3 to 4 times a day. Freezing a damp wash cloth will work just as well if you do not want to buy a facial mask.
Medications
Medications like Advil or Motrin can be used to relieve sinus headache and pressure. Advil and Motrin are anti-inflammatory drugs that relieve inflammation. Take one to two tablets every 6- to 12-hours. Advil will shrink the nasal passages as well as relieve pain.
