Whether giving or receiving a massage, the best bet for a relaxing massage that doesn't leave the skin greasy or irritated is all-natural, cold-pressed oil. The perfect solution may even be in the kitchen cabinet.
Types of Oils
Olive oil has been used for centuries to smooth the skin.
All-natural, cold-pressed oils, such as olive oil, grapeseed oil and other light oils, will help hands glide easily over the skin but won't be too slippery to prevent a deep massage. Other natural oils like jojoba, almond and shea butter provide a light, pleasant scent for the massage, while still serving as effective massage oils.
Oils to Avoid
Mineral oil is a petroleum by-product and very irritating for the skin.
Avoid mineral oil, as it is petroleum-based and can irritate the skin by clogging the pores. Mineral oil can also trap heat under the skin, causing discomfort. Other oils to avoid include synthetic massage oils with heavy perfumes, which can irritate the skin and the nose. A massage should be relaxing, not overpowering.
Cleanup
A clean towel is all that is needed to clean up after a natural oil massage.
If a massage is thorough enough, the natural oils should penetrate the skin and leave it soft and supple. Any excess oil can be blotted or wiped off with a clean towel.
