Tin Can Ideas & Crafts

Tin can crafts are great activities for kids.

Making tin crafts is a great way to recycle used soup cans and canned vegetable containers. These crafts are ideal for elementary art school projects or for creative projects at home. Tin can ideas and crafts allow creativity and imagination to run free. They make unique gifts, and each one can be individualized to the artist's taste.

Treat Cups

Treat cups are a creative alternative to a bowl filled with treats and candies. Kids will enjoy making a bat or cat treat cup. Paint the outside of a can any color; for bats, black is recommended, and any natural color can be used for cats. Paint the face on the side of the can and glue on wiggly eyes. Cut out shapes from a paper plate and glue them to the sides of the can. Use triangle-like shapes for cat ears and a more free-form wing shape for bats. Paint them desired color. Once the paint is dry, fill with treats.

Bank

Kids can make a handy bank to toss coins and save money. Find a plastic top that fits the size of the can, such as a yogurt container top, and cut a tiny slit in the top big enough for coins to pass through. Use glitter, pompoms, permanent markers and colored construction paper to decorate the outside of the can as desired.

Pencil Cups

Make a rabbit pencil holder with a tin can and construction paper. Measure and cut a sheet of white construction paper to wrap around the can, and glue or tape it around. Cut rabbit eats out of the same paper; position and glue them inside the can on top. Use pink construction paper for the inside of the ears, nose and mouth, or draw them on with pink marker. Glue on wiggle eyes and a pom-pom in back for a tail. Use a marker to draw on whiskers.

Candle Holder

Fill a can with water, and freeze until water turns into ice. Draw a simple pattern on a piece of paper and secure it to the outside of the can with a rubber band. Carefully, using a hammer and nail, poke out holes along the sketch, spaced approximately 1/2 millimeter apart. When the ice melts, dry the can, then spray paint it any desired color. Two coats may be needed. Use a nail to clean paint out of holes. Place a tea candle inside and watch it illuminate through the design.
