Depakote is a prescription drug often used to treat bipolar and epileptic patients and to prevent migraines. Some users of this medication experience unpleasant side effects, including weight gain, abdominal pain, and insomnia, and may decide they no longer want to take the drug. Yet as with the majority of anti-seizure medications, Depakote use must be reduced slowly, and always under a doctor's supervision. If you are considering weaning yourself off of Depakote, follow the steps below to do so safely and effectively.
Instructions
1. See a health care provider who can advise you as to how you can best wean yourself off of Depakote using a specific, timed plan.
2. Take the newly prescribed dosages of Depakote daily as per your doctor's instructions, which will depend on your original dosage and the length of time you have taken the drug. You may need to continue taking Depakote for up to three months or more as you gradually taper off your usage.
3. Take any additional anti-seizure medication prescribed by your doctor during this time in order to lessen the risk of seizures, one of the most common and serious effects of Depakote withdrawal.
4. Tell your doctor if you experience any troublesome symptoms after you stop taking Depakote, as this could be a sign that your replacement medication dosage is not sufficient.
