Acupressure Points For Headaches

Headaches can be difficult to treat. They can come on fast and with no warning. While medication may be effective, it may take some time to work, so you may have to cope with the pain, while you wait for the medication to take effect. However, there are some acupressure points you can try. There are some you can do on yourself, and there are others that someone else needs to apply.

Identification

Acupressure is a technique where pressure with the fingers, hands, elbows, knees or feet is applied to the body to stimulate and unblock the flow of chi energy and promote health. Stimulating these pressure points can relieve muscular tension and improve circulation to help relieve your headache symptoms.

Technique

To apply acupressure for a headache using these points, follow these basic principals. Use two fingers and press until you feel it hurt at a tolerable level. It should be slightly uncomfortable but not really painful. Close your eyes and take beep breaths. Relax your body while applying the pressure for between 1 to 2 minutes.

Pressure Point GB 20

This point is good for pain in the temporal region and sides of the head. Find the depression in the back of the head at the base of your skull. Then run your fingers from the middle of the back of your neck, to just past the first large muscle you feel. Your fingers should slide into a depression. Press in and slightly up until you feel a tender spot, and make small circular motions with the fingers.

Pressure Point CO 4

This is an acupressure point for any kind of head pain. This point is located in the webbing of the hand between the thumb and first finger. It can be done in either hand, or both if someone applies the pressure for you. To do it yourself, place your thumb on the top of your hand and your first finger on the palm side. Press around until you feel a tender spot. Use small circular motions. Then switch hands.

Pressure Point LV 3

This point is located on the top of the foot between the big toe and first toe. Slide your fingers around until you find a depression between the bones and a tender spot. Once again, hold and apply a small circular motion.

Considerations

If you are pregnant or have any kind of chronic medical condition, check with your doctor first because some of these points are contraindicated for some conditions.
