Sleep With A Ruptured Disc

A ruptured disc, also called a herniated or slipped disc, is a painful condition caused by the bones of the spine bulging out and putting pressure on spinal nerves. The condition is often caused by improperly lifting heavy objects. The pain from a ruptured disc can make it very difficult to sleep, but there are some things you can do to alleviate the pain and discomfort of lying down.

Instructions

1. Sleep on a firm mattress. A firm mattress will help support your spine and take pressure off the ruptured disc. If your mattress isn't firm enough, familydoctor.org recommends putting a thin board of plywood underneath it.

2. Sleep on your side, with your knees bent. Sleeping with your knees bent takes pressure off your spine, helping to speed healing of a ruptured disc, according to Dr. Ron Daulton Jr. This is actually the best way to sleep, anyway, because it helps you maintain proper body posture.

3. Use pillows. Familydoctor.org recommends putting a pillow under your head to support your neck and one between your knees if you are sleeping on your side. If you must sleep on your back, slip one under your lower back for support and also place one under your knees.

4. Don't sleep on your stomach. This position arches your back's natural curves and is likely to irritate your ruptured disc.
