Transition From Effexor Xr To Pristiq

Transition From Effexor XR to Pristiq

When treating depression and anxiety symptoms, it is often a long process of testing anti-depression prescriptions until the right formula is found. According to Psych Central, the medication Effexor XR is similar to Pristiq, but can be taken in lower doses to achieve the same affect, which could reduce the number of side effects patients who take Effexor XR experience. But if your insurance company will not pay for Effexor XR but will pay for Pristiq, transitioning off of Effexor XR to take Pristiq could take up to two weeks.

Instructions

1. Taper off your Effexor XR dosage with the help of your doctor. For example, if you are taking Effexor XR 300 milligram capsules, lower the dosage to the next lowest dose for two to three days.

2. Lower your Effexor XR dosage until you have reached the lowest dosage of 37.5 milligrams. Take the lower dosage for two to three days.

3. Stop taking Effexor XR on the fourth day after beginning the lowest dosage.

4. Begin taking 50 milligrams of Pristiq on the fourth day and gradually work your way up to the doctor recommended daily dosage. You may have to work your way up from 50 to 100 milligram capsules over a period of two weeks.

5. Record any emotional and physical side effects you experience after transitioning to Pristiq. If the side effects do not show improvement after two weeks on the drug, consult with your doctor.
