Heath Risks Of Being Bulimic

Binging and self-induced vomiting affects self-esteem.

Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder that can be deadly. The illness, which is more common in females than males, is characterized by frequent binge and purge episodes in order to avoid weight gain. Victims of bulimia can suffer from many health conditions that are hard to detect by just looking at the person. Shame and guilt make bulimics determined to hide the condition. Early treatment and detection are essential to avoid serious health issues.

Heart and Kidney Health

Due to frequent vomiting and the use of laxatives, victims of bulimia can suffer from severe dehydration. This affects the electrolyte balance of your body. Low levels of potassium, sodium and magnesium are common in bulimics and may bring on severe medical conditions. Extreme low potassium levels can trigger kidney failure. The heart muscle can weaken and you may have an irregular heartbeat and suffer from low blood pressure and a low pulse. Eventually heart failure can set in.

Dental Health

The dental health of bulimics suffers due to the frequent vomiting episodes. Acids in vomit cause irreversible erosion of the tooth enamel. Tooth sensitivity sets in and cavities, gum disease and mouth sores become frequent problems. If not stopped, extensive vomiting may result in the loss of teeth. When teeth are severely affected, a dentist may suspect bulimia. Placing crowns over the damaged teeth or using veneers to cover up the damage, may help restore the appearance of your mouth. The only way to control further dental damage is to stop the behavior.

Mental Health

People with bulimia may suffer from emotional and psychological problems which may stem from conflicts at home, a history of abuse or relationship issues. Low self-esteem is a common in bulimics. Bulimics are often perfectionists. They cannot accept failure and by incorporating the vicious cycle of binging and purging, they believe they are in control. Depression may set in and when dealing with anxiety and feelings of unworthiness and guilt, suicidal thoughts may emerge. Self-help groups and therapy may offer some relief.

Intestinal Health

The use of laxatives and diuretics paired with frequent purging affects your intestinal health. Your digestive system and metabolism is disturbed and frequent stomach pain, ulcers and bloating may set in. Throat issues appear and swallowing food may become painful. The vomiting can cause your esophagus to become irritated and sore and tearing may occur. During binges, excessive food is consumed in a very short amount of time. This may cause the stomach to rupture.
