Surgery
A hernia is a condition that often requires surgery to repair. Surgeons commonly use mesh patches to reinforce the repair from the inside, to help prevent a recurrent hernia. The type of patch that is used, depends on the type of hernia that is during surgery.
Identification
A hernia is caused by a muscle weakness in the wall of the abdomen. This weakness may eventually tear, causing a hernia to occur. This can cause a bulge in the abdominal wall, and can become worse with activities such as lifting heavy objects, coughing or sneezing.
Serious Complications
A hernia can be associated with serious complications if the tissues in the abdomen become trapped. This often leads to the death of this tissue and can become a life-threatening situation. Surgical repair of the hernia is recommended to avoid this scenario.
Surgical Repair
Surgery is necessary to repair the hernia and avoid further complications. This surgery is performed under general anesthesia. An incision is made over the area of the hernia and the tear is repaired with a combination of plastic mesh and sutures.
