Determine The Proper Placement Of Exit Signs In Buildings







If you have a building that is used for business or is open to the public, you must have lighted exit signs to display. The proper placement of these exit signs is very important as well as where you place the signs. If you need to know determine the proper placement of exit signs in buildings, you can follow these steps to help you place the signs in the right places. Building codes have strict regulations concerning exit signs that you must follow.


Instructions


1. Look for each door that leads to the outdoors that you have in the building. If you have stairs with no doors, you will want to include these areas in your plans as well.


2. Attach an exit sign above each exit door. The exit sign must be secured to the wall just on top of the door frame.


3. Attach exit signs to any wall that is close to a set of stairs that leads outside. These signs must be as close to the stairs as possible and the same height as the door frame.


4. Secure exit signs by doors and stairs inside the building that eventually lead outdoors. This includes all floors higher than ground level. Each floor must display exit signs to lead people to an outside door eventually.


5. Place exit signs in basements that lead to the first floor and an outside door. The signs must be at the bottom of the stairs. The height of the sign should be as close to the height of a door frame as possible. There should also be an exit sign at the top of the stairs by the basement door.
