Home Treatments For Heartburn

Heartburn is a painful condition in which stomach acid and food particles back up into the esophagus, causing pain and burning in the chest and throat. It is important to stop heartburn when it occurs because over time, the acid from your stomach can really wear down the lining of your esophagus, causing more serious problems. Both prescription and over-the-counter medications are available to treat and prevent heartburn, but many home remedies can be just as effective.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is good for more than just household cleaning; it can relieve heartburn, too. Mix about 1 tsp. of baking soda in 8 oz. of water and drink the whole glass. The baking soda helps to neutralize stomach acid, stopping heartburn pain. Because baking soda is high in salt content, you should not use this remedy too often and you should not use it at all if you are pregnant.

Pickle Juice

It may sound crazy, but the vinegar content of pickle juice may be just what you need to stop heartburn. You don't need to drink much, just a few sips will do it.

Barley Grass

Drinks like barley grass, wheat grass and chlorella can neutralize acidity and reduce heartburn problems. This remedy works especially well if taken every day on a more preventative basis.

Fennel Seeds

Fennel seed is an herb that calms stomach spasms and aids in digestion, which makes it a good remedy for heartburn. Chewing about half a teaspoon of fennel seeds after meals should do the trick.

Apple Cider Vinegar

The pH balancing properties of apple cider vinegar make it one of the most popular, and one of the most effective, heartburn remedies out there. Drinking vinegar may not sound so appealing, and it really isn't. The good news is that you won't need much to get a fast result. Add 1 tsp. of vinegar to about half a cup of water and drink up.
