Become A Registered Yoga Instructor

Yoga Student

There are many types of yoga, hence many certifications that may be obtained in order to teach these different styles. No matter what kind of yoga you are interested in becoming certified to teach, there are many hours of training, practice and usually a certification course involved. Teaching yoga is a rewarding occupation and can be done in addition to another career. If you have a passion for living well and pursing the art of well-being, then helping others to pursue yoga is something you can do as a registered yoga instructor.

Instructions

1. Choose the type of yoga you are most passionate about teaching. Bikram, Iyengar, Forrest etc. This is most likely the type that you have pursued and enjoy doing in your daily life. Once you know this, you can research what programs exist for becoming certified to teach that style of yoga. Aura Wellness Center, for example offers a 240-hour self-study training course that will certify you to teach level I Vinyasa Yoga once you pass the exam.

2. Practice daily and learn from other certified instructors. Most training programs expect you to attend classes and practice on your own prior to teacher training, and in many cases, you must have been practicing for years. To become a certified instructor of Iyengar Yoga for example, you must have been a student for at least three years.

3. Attend training required by your specific certification program. It may take several years before you can actually teach classes of your own. In Inyengar Yoga, a student can take their level I test after a year of training, and then their level II after a second year of training, and it is only then that they can teach. If interested in becoming a certified Bikram Yoga instructor, you can attend a teacher training like the 63-day session offered by Bikram’s Yoga College of India.

4. Practice quality. Yoga is not only about a certain amount of hours on the mat but the quality with which one conducts their own practice and their communication skills with other students. Some instructors in training find it helpful to record the classes they lead so that they can improve.

5. Take your exams. Some types of yoga require a theory paper in addition to a demonstration of asanas and pranayama, as well as a demonstration of teaching. Some styles of yoga may have as many as a dozen different levels of certification. It is truly a lifelong study.
