Citronella can be applied topically or burned to repel insects.
Citronella oil is an inexpensive, safe insect repellent. The Environmental Protection Agency classifies citronella oil as a biopesticide with a "non-toxic mode of action,' which means it has no intentionally toxic ingredients to kill fleas and other bloodsuckers. Instead, the smell of citronella drives the insects away. This makes it safer to use than chemical insecticides such as DEET. Pure citronella oil can be a skin irritant, so it must be diluted before use.
Instructions
1. Measure 1 tbsp. of the carrier oil (baby or grape seed) oil into the bottle.
2. Add 1/4 tsp. of citronella oil to the bottle.
3. Cap bottle; shake thoroughly to mix.
4. Dab a few drops on your arm to test the mixture. Wear for at least 30 minutes, including at least five minutes in direct sun. If irritation results, wash off with soap and water and dilute the mixture with more baby oil. Repeat as necessary.
5. Apply to arms and legs as you would a lotion. Reapply every hour to keep insects away.
