A tornado is one of the most destructive weather phenomena, and is often accompanied by other dangerous weather such as hail. Knowing where to find shelter is crucial to surviving these deadly storms.
House
If you have a basement, go as soon as you hear tornado sirens or suspect a tornado is approaching. If you have no basement, get to the lowest floor and into a small central room such as a closet.
Apartment
Get to the lowest floor and into a hallway with no windows or small central room, such as a supply closet.
Mobile Home
You are safer out in the open than in a mobile home during a tornado. Get to a storm shelter or sturdy building if one is available; otherwise, get outside
School
Follow tornado drill procedures. Get into interior hallway and crouch with your arms protecting your head.
Office Building or Hospital
Get to lowest floor possible and into an interior, windowless area. Stay away from windows and do not use elevators as you could be trapped if the power goes out.
Vehicle
Get out of the vehicle and seek shelter on low ground away from cars. Do not get under bridges, as they provide little shelter against flying objects.
