Best Remedies For Gout

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis that occurs mostly in men over 40. Gout pain is caused when needle-like crystals form in the connective tissue and/or in the fluid that cushions joints. The crystals are formed from uric acid. The following remedies for gout include home treatments, prescription medications, fish oils and vitamins.

Fish oils

Fish oil supplements can help fight gout flareups. These supplements contain omega-3 fatty acids, also know as EPA and DHA. The anti-inflammatory properties of fish oils also can help reduce pain in the joints inflicted with gout. Omega-6 fatty acids can be taken with the omega-3 supplements to reduce gout pain, but they must be taken correctly. Omega-6 supplements produce gamma linolenic acid (GLA), but too much GLA will cancel out the omega-3. It is a delicate balance combining the omega-3 and omega-6.

Gout medications

There are two types of gout medication: the kind that relieve pain and the kind that treat the gout. The pain relievers are NSAIDs (indomethacin),
colchicine and corticosteroids. NSAIDs are available over the counter, but the best to relieve gout pain is indomethacin which available only as a prescription. Colchicine is available in a tablet, but historically doesn't work as well as indomethacin. Corticosteroids, available in a tablet, is usually used if indomethacin or colchicine don't offer relief or if more than one joint is affected. Gout treatment drugs include allopurinol, febuxostat, pegloticase and uricoosuric drugs (probenecid, sulfinpyrazone and benzbromarone). However, the major drawback of gout treatment medications is their side effects. These drugs can cause allergic reactions, cancel out other medications and cause other problems.

Vitamins

The best vitamins for reducing uric acid levels, a major source of gout pain, are vitamin C and potassium citrate. While these vitamins are available as supplements, it's best to eat a diet rich in these vitamins to fight gout most effectively. These include most fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, mineral water, lentils, soy and tofu.

Home remedies

These gout remedies can usually be found in items you may have around the house. Dissolve a heaping teaspoon of baking soda in 6 ounces of water four times a day. Eating a half-pound of cherries or the equivalent in cherry juice can reduce flareups. Two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, mixed with water and honey for taste, can reduce gout attacks. Celery stalks, between four and eight, also can cure or alleviate gout.
