Use Alternative Treatments For Alzheimer'S Disease

One of the most devastating diseases of the elderly is Alzheimer's disease. It not only effects the sufferer, but family members and friends. They can become full of frustration and sadness. It seems as though this disease is stealing the mental capacity of their loved one. Alzheimer's most often starts with loss of memory which can be misdiagnosed as dementia. As the disease progresses the elderly person loses the ability to remember events that just took place and recognition of family members and others. This occurs because much of the brain tissue is destroyed and the areas that hold memory are impaired. This disease progresses over a period of time, giving those around the Alzheimer's patient time to adjust to the situation.

Instructions

1. Add herbs to your supplemental schedule. Studies have shone ginkgo biloba to improve blood circulation throughout the body, but especially in the brain. This can help with memory issues in many Alzheimer's patients. Ginkgo biloba also has shown to have antioxidants, which are a benefit to people of all ages. Other herbs helpful for a declining memory are gotu kola, evening primrose oil and Siberian ginseng.

2. Take nutritional supplements. Through testing, Alzheimer's patients have been shown to be deficient in certain vitamins. The B vitamins, especially B12 and folate are often too low in these sufferers. Because B vitamins work best in tandem with each other in particular portions, it is best to take a B-complex supplement.

3. Stimulate the patient's brain with mental exercises. It has been found in recent studies that Alzheimer's patients can improve their memory as well as their problem solving abilities through social and mental activities. Crossword puzzles, reading, discussing current events, visiting museums and playing games with others are all good, challenging activities to be used in treatment. Other therapies found helpful for brain stimulation are art and dance therapies.

4. Ingest flower essences. Flower essences work with the mental, emotional and spiritual elements. Marshmallow flower essence is believed to support complete brain functions by bringing high frequencies to the brain. Saskatoon flower essence supports the entire brain with communication between both hemispheres. Three or 4 drops of the essence in a small amount of water is all that is needed. Drink this on a daily basis until the small bottle of essences has been completely used.

5. Exercise by walking or participating in any aerobic activity. Research shows an ongoing exercise regimen to be helpful for brain function, increased learning ability and lightening the mood. According to an Australian study, walking improved mental tests of elderly individuals. This is believed to be from increased blood flow throughout the body during the physical activity. The benefits showed to be as good as drugs given to Alzheimer's patients.

6. Apply pressure to your hands and feet. Reflexology is a therapeutic foot massage that uses specific pressure points that correspond with other body parts. Pressure applied to the center underside of the big toe (on either or both feet) stimulates the brain and memory. An ongoing reflexology therapy should send positive energy to the brain.
