Information Flowers & Why We Need Them

Flowers are the reproductive mechanisms of angiosperms (flowering plants). Scientists estimate that angiosperms first appeared on the planet during the close of the Mesozoic Era. Flowers have evolved to become an important resource for a wide range of organisms.

Characteristics

Flowers grow in various sizes, colors and shapes. Some flowers are solitary and others grow in clusters. Many flowers emit a fragrant odor. These fragrances and colors attract pollinating insects.

Parts

The male parts of the flower are the filament and anther. The female parts are the style, ovary and stigma. Flowers also have colorful petals and leaf-like structures called sepals.

Reproduction

The basic function of a flower is to reproduce by generating seeds. Flowers reproduce by transferring pollen grains from the stamen to the ovules in a process called pollination.

Benefits

Flowers are an important food source for many organisms. Humans and animals eat their fruits, seeds and shoots. Such insects as bees and butterflies extract a flower's pollen and nectar.

Uses

Flowers are commonly used for decoration in vases and gardens. Their essential oils are used in perfumes and other fragrances. Flowers also are instrumental in the production of honey.
