Significance

Women age 40 to 60 are most likely to develop hemangiomas of the spine.

Infants

If a hemagioma develops on an infant's lower back or spine, it can result in spinal deformities in the child, states Cincinnati Children's Hospital.

Pain

Problems with hemangiomas of the spine can occur when the lesion presses against the spinal cord. Hemangiomas can also cause bone pain.

Treatment

A hemangioma that is causing health problems can be treated with embolization, in which the blood vessels that feed the lesion are blocked. The hemangioma can then be surgically removed.
