Insomnia may affects a person's mental capacity and judgment. Insomnia can result in symptoms similar to being drunk. In fact, research has shown that lack of sleep affects on a person's driving ability in ways similar to drinking alcohol and results in numerous automobile accidents.


Insomnia also causes loss of memory and affects a person's ability to concentrate. In severe cases, insomnia can lead to hallucinations and psychotic behaviors.








Insomnia Weakens the Immune System


In addition to mental and psychological effects, insomnia also affects the physiology of a person. Insomnia cause a person's immune system to weaken and makes him or her more susceptible to illness. A person with insomnia also experiences nausea, headaches, lost of appetite and blurry vision.


Insomnia can Lead to Substance Abuse


Most people with insomnia try over-the-counter medications for sleep rather than look for formal insomnia treatment from their doctors. The main issue with over-the-counter sleep medications is that their effects are temporary. Furthermore, insomnia can become addictive or tolerant to sleep medications. That is, they may need higher doses of the drugs in order to get the same result. In some cases, patients may try to use alcohol as a sleep aid. Stopping medications or alcohol will cause insomnia to relapse and also withdrawal.
