Use Ear Drops

Many people balk when prescribed ear drops. They recall past mishaps. The ear drop medicine rolled down the cheek instead of the ear canal. The cold drops caused pain when they entered the ear. Too many drops were released in use. However, by following a few simple steps these problems can be avoided.

Instructions

1. Ready the ear drops. Roll the bottle back and forth between the palms to warm the contents. Shake the bottle to mix the ingredients. Unscrew the top. If the dropper is a separate unit, squeeze the bulb to pull the medicine into the dropper.

2. Get in position. Lean the head to one side with the afflicted ear facing upward. With one hand, carefully pull the ear lobe away from the neck to extend the ear canal.

3. Hit the target. With the free hand, hold the tip of the bottle or dropper directly over the opening of the ear without touching the ear. Gently squeeze the bottle or dropper bulb to release the drops. Let go of the earlobe.

4. Remain in position for several minutes. Lightly rub the side of the face in front of the ear. This helps the medicine travel down the ear canal.

5. Clean up. Sit upright. Wipe away any seepage from the ear with a tissue. Secure the top on the bottle. Clean hands to remove any residual medication.
