White Mushrooms Found In Mississippi

Morel mushroom can be found in the Northeast corner of Mississippi.

Mississippi's rich soil, thick forests and humid climate make it a mushroom hunter's paradise. Go on a mushroom hunt, sometimes called a foray, to search for white mushrooms called Morels. Mississippi mushroom farmers also cultivate a white mushroom called the Shiitake as an agricultural crop. Both types of white mushrooms are known for delicious flavors and health benefits.

Shiitake

One white species of mushroom found in Mississippi is the Shiitake mushroom. Shiitakes are edible mushrooms that have been grown in Japan for centuries. This humble mushroom is packed with health benefits and can lower you cholesterol. If you are interested in farming Shiitake mushrooms, you can partner with the Mississippi Natural Products Association to begin your mushroom farm.

Morels

Morels are a white mushroom with a unique, coral-like texture on the top. They are edible and can be found in certain parts of Mississippi. Morels do not generally grow as far south as Mississippi, but there are a few key places you can find them. If you are interested in finding these mushrooms, join a mushroom foray or hunting group.

Warning

Mushroom hunting is very popular and, while many varieties are edible, you should never eat a mushroom variety you are unsure about, as some can be extremely poisonous. The Mississippi Department of Agriculture recommends submitting any questionable mushrooms to the Plant Pathology Laboratory located at Mississippi State University.

Recipe Ideas

Once you identify a white mushroom species is edible, there are a number of delicious ways to incorporate the delicious healthful fungi into your diet. Add it to you Italian dishes such as angel hair pasta, or mix with fettuccine. They made an excellent addition to gravies or casseroles and can add delicious flavor to vegetables such as green beans.
