Adverse Effects Of Synthroid

Synthroid is a medication for the treatment of hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is a disorder in which the thyroid gland does not produce sufficient amounts of thyroxine, which is a thyroid hormone. Bodies that do not have enough thyroxine slow down. Synthroid is a treatment that has been around since 1955. This medication supplements the body with thyroxine that the body cannot supply for itself naturally. As with any medication, there are possible side effects associated with taking Synthroid.

Common Side Effects

There are several common side effects associated with Synthroid usage that are generally no cause for alarm. These usually minor and common side effects include sleeplessness, stomach cramps, digestive issues, partial and temporary loss of some hair, nervousness, mood alterations, flushing, fatigue, muscle weakness and vomiting.

More Severe Side Effects

There are certain side effects that you could experience as a result of taking Synthroid that are possibly more dangerous. If you experience swelling of the mouth, face, tongue or lips, appetite changes, changes in menstrual period, excessive sweating, chest pain, seizures, shortness of breath, weight changes, rapid heartbeat, headache, fever, hyperactivity, having a hard time handling changing weather conditions, irregular heartbeat, chest pounding or tremors, you should seek immediate medical attention (after discontinuing use of Synthroid).

Allergic Reactions

Synthroid comes with the possibility of causing allergic reactions. If you experience allergic reactions, including swelling of the lips, face, mouth or throat, itching, hives or a persistent and unexplained rash, then you should stop using Synthroid and immediately see a doctor.

Warning

Excessive Synthroid dosages, or increasing your dosage of Synthroid too rapidly, could potentially lead to overstimulation of the thyroid gland. You might notice symptoms such as irritability, emotional instability, palpitations, sleeplessness, tremors, chest pain, digestive issues, fever, hair loss, flushing, fatigue, heat intolerance and many others. If this occurs, you should consult a doctor immediately.

Considerations

There are certain individuals to which Synthroid should not be prescribed as it could lead to a bevy of dangerous and undesirable side effects. People who have recently suffered heart attacks or individuals who are hypersensitive to the thyroid hormone should not use this medication.
