Estrogen helps to stimulate mood-altering chemicals in the brain that helps women feel better. 500 milligrams of fish oil taken three times a day, may decrease the amount of hot flashes, and help more women stay upbeat during perimenopause.


3. Use birth control to stabilize hormones. Oral contraceptives disrupt the fluctuation of hormone levels that fight the most dreaded symptoms of perimenopause: joint aches, missed periods, hot flashes and night sweats. Oral contraceptives trigger the ovaries (via the brain) to produce regular periods and alleviate a few perimenopause symptoms.


4. Cool hot flashes by sleeping in air-condition or a fan at night. A fluctuation of hormones may cause as much as an 8 to 10 degree change in temperature due to perimenopause. According to a study by Columbia University, women with a minimum of 10 hot flashes a day, saw their hot flash numbers drop to within 3 to 4 sweating spells when they slept in a room that was 66 degrees or lower.
