Handwriting Recognition Tools

Use hand recognition with your mouse.

Handwriting recognition is a convenient feature on new computers that allows users to create words and characters as they would on a piece of paper. Typing can become taxing on the wrists and elbows, and the switch to a more natural writing style can provide comfort and relief.

Software

As of 2010, most new computers come with handwriting recognition software, but older computers will require a software installation.nThis software allows you to use your own hand motions instead of a keyboard to produce words that will appear on your monitor and in your word processor, emails, Internet browser and other applications. Depending on how the age of your computer system, you may only be able to use handwriting recognition software in certain applications. This software is also language specific; you can purchase it to recognize several languages.

Mouse

Once you have installed your handwriting recognition software, you simply need a mouse to start forming characters. Click down on the mouse clicker and begin shaping the letters. Release, and the handwriting recognition software will stop drawing out characters. This method is not the most efficient way to recognize handwriting, as a mouse makes your hand motions significantly larger than you would make them if you were writing on a piece of paper.

Stylus and Tablet

A stylus and tablet are are electronic connections that mimic a pencil and a pad of paper. By holding the stylus in your hand and using it to write on the tablet, you can write freely as you would on a piece of paper, and these characters will show up accurately on your monitor. These tools typically connect through your USB port.
