Kinds Of Dentures

No one looks forward to reaching the point of wearing dentures. Individuals worry that others will know the moment they open their mouth to talk that they no longer have their natural teeth. False teeth are not a new concept. People have replaced bad teeth with substitutes since ancient times. Quality dentures are now affordable for almost everyone rather than being worn only by the wealthy.

History

Artificial teeth date back to 700 BC and in some civilizations even earlier. In ancient times only the wealthy could afford quality dentures with a natural appearance. History has seen dentures made out of Ivory, bones, gold, silver, mother of pearl and even wood. The early centuries also saw individuals placing real teeth in their mouths. It was not uncommon for someone who was in need of money to sell some of their teeth or for people to remove teeth from people who had died.

Types

There are several different types of dentures. Conventional plastic dentures are among the most commonly used for people looking for affordable options. These dentures will not be fitted until the gums have healed after natural teeth have been removed. For those people searching for dentures that will look as close to real teeth as possible, there are cosmetic dentures. Ceramic porcelain teeth are used to create the natural appearance characteristic of cosmetic dentures. Cosmetic dentures are a more expensive option. Dental implants are available for those people that can afford the high cost. Implants use a technology that can be attached to a person's jaw and in which the false teeth can be implanted. Dental implants have nearly all the functions of a person's natural teeth and can be designed to create a beautiful smile.

Misconceptions

It is a common misconception that everyone will know if a person is wearing dentures. Many dentures today use the latest dentistry innovations to create a more natural appearance and fit than ever. If an individual cares for their dentures well by cleaning them as directed by their dentist, they are not likely to stain and discolor to create an unnatural performance. Many people still believe they will not be able to speak as clearly or eat as well if they have dentures rather than their own teeth. In most cases this is not a concern because most dentures today are fully functioning as long as they are used and cared for as instructed.

Considerations

When preparing to wear dentures, it is to remember that these false teeth will initially seem foreign to your mouth. Your brain sometimes registers the dentures as being food. The body is unaware that dentures now serve as your teeth. You will start to salivate, as your brain send a signal to start the digestion process. Having too much saliva can be a problem until your brain adjusts to the fact that this is not a foreign object and there is no need to start digesting.

Warning

You must consult your dentist if you are having any problems with the fitting of your dentures. If you feel any pain, you should also call your dentist. Dentures that are not fitting well can cause your gums and mouth to be sore or become infected. In the most severe of cases, you could develop tumors as a result of dentures that are not aligned in your mouth properly. Even if you are not having problems with your dentures, you need to see your dentist periodically to ensure good oral health.
