How Do You Prevent Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a central nervous system disorder in which electrical signals in the brain become overactive. As a result, people with epilepsy experience seizures or convulsions, and some people lose consciousness. Epilepsy typically develops in early childhood. However, the condition can surface at any age. There isn't a way to prevent epilepsy. However, sufferers can control their symptoms and reduce their chances of having a seizure.


Instructions


1. Get enough rest. Sleep deprivation and being overly tired can trigger epilepsy. To control symptoms and prevent a seizure, sleep at least 6 to 8 hours a night. Listen to your body, and schedule a few minutes of downtime each day.


2. Eat a special diet. A low-carb and high-fat/protein diet has been proven to reduce seizures in people with epilepsy. A low-carb diet involves eating less than 30 grams of carbohydrates a day. Carbohydrates include pasta, bread, beans and certain fruits.








3. Exercise regularly. Eating a high-fat diet isn't healthy, and it can increase your chances of developing certain cancers and heart disease. Thus, regular exercise is essential to maintaining your health. In addition, exercise can reduce the frequency of seizures. Doctors encourage people with epilepsy to workout for a minimum of 90 minutes every week.


4. Learn manage stress. Worry and stressful situations can trigger epilepsy seizures. While there isn't a way to completely eliminate stress from your life, you can learn stress management tips. These include eating healthy, taking a nap, taking a warm bath, spending time with friends, finding a hobby and getting a massage.


5. Take your medication. Doctors often prescribe anti-seizure medications to persons with epilepsy. To prevent a seizure, it's important to take your medication as directed by your physician. Talk with your doctor before stopping your medication or switching to herbal remedies.
