Post Breast Augmentation Exercises

Whenever you have any type of surgical procedure, there are usually post-operative instructions the doctor gives you. This is no different with breast implant surgery. After breast augmentation the doctor will prescribe particular exercises that are important for your implant care. These exercises help the breast implants adjust to their new space and prevent you from having difficulties that may require a second surgery.

Medial Implant Exercises

The medial implant exercise is meant to help you develop cleavage with your new breasts. This is an exercise that is meant strictly for patients who had submuscular implants. If patients who had subgladular implants do this exercise, they run the risk of creating what is known as a "uni-boob."

First, cross your arms over each other and cup the bottom of each breast with your hand. Gently push each breast simultaneously toward each other and toward the center of your chest. Hold this position for two seconds, completing a set of five repetitions. This is an exercise that should be done twice a day to encourage your implants to reach the medial wall so that you achieve a nice cleavage.

Upward Breast Implant Exercise

This exercise is meant to help the implants to be able to move naturally in your chest. There is a peri-implant capsule space that is wider than the actual implant, and you want the implant to move freely in this space so that it appears natural and moves how a regular breast would move. Gravity naturally pulls the breast downward and opens the lower space capsule, so you will need to help it move into the upward space.

Place your hand at the bottom of the implant. Hold your hand in a karate chop form and place it up against the bottom of the implant. Your small finger should be level with your chest wall. Gently roll your hand downward, or press gently on the bottom of the implant so that your implant moves upward. You should see the top portion of your breast getting full. This means the implant is moving toward the top of the capsule, which is what you want. This exercise helps to create more space in the upper portion of the capsule and give it space to move upward. This exercise should also be completed twice a day, doing five repetitions each time, and holding the position for two seconds each time.

Scar Capsule Contraction Prevention Exercises

It is important to keep the breast implants moving in their pocket each day. This helps prevent capsule contraction, which is when scar tissue develops around the implant and prevents the implant from moving freely in its capsule. Compression exercises help with the mobility of the implant. You can lie on the floor for these exercises or on an exercise ball. While leaning back, move the implant around in its socket with your fingers. This movement should be done for a total of 30 minutes each day. You should also squeeze the implant inside the capsule, then rock it back and forth.
