When you neck hurts, the entire body moves less freely. Finding a comfortable position becomes impossible as you try to release the pressure the head creates as a result of gravity. There can be many reasons for cervical neck pain, and a person should always consult a doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
Swelling Reduction
For minor disc issues, anti-inflammatory medicines will help reduce swelling, relieving pressure and helping to keep the neck functional. Cold and hot packs can reduce swelling and increase circulation. Massage is also effective so long is it isn't too deep, creating more strain on the area. It is important to stretch lightly and keep the neck working toward its normal range of motion for proper healing.
Surgery
Extreme cases may result in a weakness of muscles in the area, a pinching of the nerve or loss of flexibility. Your doctor will need to use X-rays, MRIs and CT scans to determine the extent of damage and treatment. If muscles are extremely weakened or nerve problems are discovered, surgery followed by physical therapy and rest are prescribed. Surgery may include fusing the spine to rods.
Chiropractic
Whether an alignment issue is created by and accident, injury or prolonged muscle imbalance, most cervical neck pain is a result of a misalignment of the spine. Chiropractors specialize in realigning, the spine taking pressure off of various muscles and joints. Chiropractors use a series of massage, ultrasound and electrical stimulation methods to stretch, stimulate and strengthen muscles while "cracking" the neck and back to pop the vertebrae back into proper alignment.
