Keep A Mind Active

Experts stress the importance of doing what it takes to remain mentally fit. Physical fitness is no longer the only factor to consider when it comes to healthy aging. A growing body of research suggests that the brain must be put to work continuously in order to keep the mind sharp.

Instructions

1. Exercise for at least 20 – 30 minutes each day. Physical activity keeps blood flowing to the brain and helps to create new brain cells. Outdoor activities appear to be more beneficial physically than indoor exercise. Studies show that older individuals who walk regularly seem to experience less cognitive decline.

2. Keep up your social ties. Social interaction becomes especially critical, as we grow older. Stay involved with family and friends, as well as in your church and other community activities. The contact doesn’t always have to be face-to-face either. Talking to someone on the telephone every day or emailing can help you to maintain a network of support.

3. Drink less alcohol and quit smoking. Consuming too much alcohol can slow down the development of new brain cells. As to the dangers of smoking, recent studies now suggest that even people exposed to secondhand smoke over the long-term are more likely to develop dementia when they get older.

4. Challenge your mind. Try your hand at new experiences or take on a new hobby. Enroll in some classes simply for the sake of learning new knowledge. Playing a musical instrument is another good choice. Studies show that keeping your mind busy stimulates the brain.

5. Eat a healthy diet. Include nutritious foods that are low in fat and cholesterol in your daily menu. Foods that contain antioxidants (e.g. orange and dark green leafy vegetables and fruits) help to keep the brain healthy.

6. Vary your route to work or regular shopping trips. Over time, traveling the same roads tends to become so automatic, you may no longer think about it. Occasionally taking a different way to reach your destination forces you to be more aware.
