Symptoms Of Childhood Thyroid Disease

The thyroid is a gland that makes hormones that help regulate the cells. Most diseases of the thyroid that affect adults can also affect children. Disorders of the thyroid can render the gland either over- or under-active. Each disorder has its own set of specific symptoms.

Congenital Hypothyroidism

Congenital hypothyroidism affects one in every 4,000 babies. Infants with congenital hypothyroidism often display decreased activity, lack of appetite, little weight gain, jaundice and a hoarse cry.

Congenital Goiter

The most common cause of goiter (enlargement of the thyroid) in children is Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Besides a noticeably swollen throat, there are rarely any other symptoms.

Graves' Disease

Graves' disease, also known as hyperthyroidism, can also occur in children. Symptoms include anxiety, sleep disturbances, fatigue, tremor, vision problems and irregular heartbeat.

Growth

If not properly treated, hypothyroidism will result in growth defects in children and infants.

Testing

Testing for thyroid issues in children is done either via a blood test or using an X-ray to check for enlargement.
