Muscovite is a mineral, also known as mica, found in metamorphic and igneous rock formations. It separates into thin, clear sheets that look like glass but are easily bent and snap back to shape instead of breaking. Muscovite is used in high temperature ovens and as a heat and electrical insulator because it is fireproof and withstands extreme temperatures. It was named for an area near Moscow (Muscovy) where it was mined and used to produce windows. The crystal is clear, white silver, pink, brown, green, violet, yellow and rose red. It is found in Russia, Austria, Switzerland, Brazil, the Czech Republic and the USA.
