What Clothes Do You Wear On A Cruise

What Clothes Do You Wear on a Cruise?

Many people consider a cruise ship to be one of the more exciting vacation options. Being able to sail to several different ports in the luxury of a cruise ship is an experience not to be missed. With so much to do on and off the ship, packing and dress can be confusing. However, with some foresight and creative packing, cruise ship dress is very easy to navigate

Know the Weather

Cruise ships now go around the world in all four seasons. There is a definite difference in temperature from the Caribbean in August to Alaska in December. Make sure you know what you are sailing into and pack accordingly. Not having the correct clothing for the weather will definitely put a dent in your fun vacation.

On-Board

Cruise ships offer a myriad of activities and there are several different things you'll need to have to dress accordingly. Most of the time during the day, you can get away with very casual wear. Shorts or jeans, Hawaiian shirts, polos, or T-shirts with sandals or tennis shoes are all acceptable for casual on-board clothing. Wear what you normally do when you want to relax.

Off the Ship

Cruise ships usually stop in three or four ports of call and this is an opportunity to get off the ship and do some exploring. Remember to bring a pair of walking shoes and comfortable clothes. Often, the ship will offer shore excursions in the ports consisting of everything from a jungle zip-line tour to a hike on a glacier. Most of the time, you'll have the opportunity to plan your excursions ahead of getting on the boat. This will help you know if you need to bring your hiking boots for a trek up a Jamaican river. Do your homework and make sure you are prepared for adventures.

Dinner Clothes

Cruise ships generally serve dinner for all of their guests in one of the ship's dining rooms. For these meals, the dress code is usually business casual. Women should wear a casual dress or slacks and a blouse. For men, a nice polo shirt and slacks is perfectly acceptable. Once or twice during your cruise, there will be a formal night. These dinners are usually black-tie optional. Men are required to wear a suit (many cruise ships offer tuxedo rental) and women should have an elegant dress.

Considerations

Remember, all of these clothes will take up room in your suit case. Try to double up on your outfits for the daytime on-board the ship as much as you can. Presumably, you'll be doing a lot of relaxing and not a lot of moving around; this will keep you clothes cleaner. Doubling up will not only make the clothes last longer, but will save on luggage space. Plan your clothing options to get the most out of a limited wardrobe.
