Natural Cures For Toothaches

Toothache pain can be so intense that it completely disrupts a person's life. When visiting a dentist isn't a possibility, there are natural options which will bring relief from pain and misery caused by having a cavity.

Cause of Toothaches

A cavity develops and subsequently a toothache is experienced when tooth decay progresses into the pulp of the tooth which contains the nerve ending. Most cavities are caused by poor oral hygiene and poor nutrition. In addition, some people may naturally have unusually acidic saliva or higher levels of bacteria in the mouth. In order for tooth decay to occur, three factors must be present: the presence of bacteria, the availability of sugars and the vulnerability of the tooth enamel.

Herbal Cures

Applied with a cotton swab directly to the source of the pain, oils of clove and oregano are both helpful in providing immediate relief. If the clove oil tastes too strong, it can be diluted with olive oil to make it more palatable.

Rinsing the mouth with cooled sage tea throughout the day will help ease inflammation.

For nighttime relief, place a few drops of goldenseal extract onto a cotton ball. Press it against the gum of the affected tooth and leave it in place until morning. Following this procedure for three consecutive nights will destroy bacteria and ease inflammation.

Painkilling Foods and Spices

Chewing a raw onion for about 3 minutes will kill bacteria in the mouth and help relieve a toothache. Placing a clove of garlic upon the aching tooth will also help bring relief.

Combine a pinch of pepper with ¼ teaspoon of salt and mix together with a tiny amount of water. Apply this to the aching tooth. Applying a mixture of mustard oil and turmeric powder will also work.

Can't stand the taste? Try placing a few drops of vanilla extract on the painful tooth instead. Drinking peppermint tea helps ease inflamed tissues.

Rinsing the mouth with warm salt water and applying an ice pack to the cheek will also help ease the pain until a visit to the dentist is possible.

Additional Recommendations

Do not smoke and avoid all refined sugars. Also avoid soft drinks as they contain phosphates which erode tooth enamel. Eating plenty of raw fruits and vegetables will help keep saliva from becoming too acidic and causing more pain.

Preventing Tooth Decay

The only way to remove cavity-causing plaque is to brush the teeth after eating and floss between teeth daily. Brushing two to three times daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush is sufficient. Be sure to replace the toothbrush once a month. Using a plaque-reducing mouth rinse in addition to brushing and flossing is also helpful.
