Frequently considered the yoga of alignment, Iyengar is a slow-paced, precise form of hatha yoga based on the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar. Poses are modified with props, making practice accessible to all ages and body types.
Props
A blanket or mat is frequently used.
Props include cushions, blankets, mats, wall ropes, chairs, blocks, straps and mats. These were introduced to assist those who are new to yoga or whose age or physical condition requires modifications of the poses.
Goals
Standing poses help develop a beginner's balance.
Beginning practitioners are taught the fundamental postures and pose modifications utilizing props. The beginner's objective is to understand basic alignment and structure of the poses, in the process of gaining greater awareness, strength and flexibility. More advanced practitioners seek to learn more about connecting their breath with the poses, and focusing inward.
